So I'm new here - and generally new to phone hacking. Done some similar stuff, just not ont phones.
A few simple questions:
Is downloading a copy of WM from upload site X legal? (not that I care, just purely wondering what the companies think)
If I reinstall the firmware, then late an unrelated hardware problem pops up, is my warranty still void? Can I back up my ROM for later restoring?
Do I lose everything when installing a new ROM? (text messages, contacts, etc.)
What is the most up-to-date rim package for the 910c? There are lots of the same version, but I dont know where to start.
I was also goign to ask for a good offline GPS software -- but I'll search the forum first.
Any cool stuff I should know?
Taylor
it is grey area...probably not legal in licensing terms.
you can reinstall software through reflashing the original rom by micro-sd or dnw. I don't think they can find out you flash another rom without going through some crazy method. so i think if you need warranty repair just reflash the original rom.
you do lose everything so backup your stuff
as for versions, there are 6.1, 6.5 roms. Most up to date does not mean most stable, read people comment to determine which one is better. the 2xxxx is the build number of wm 6.x os, usually higher number mean more recent but it also depends on the branch (the 2nd digit from the left tell you that)

the sda-music, (or maybe sda only? how may i find out what device it is? its labeled "T-Mobile SDA" but seems to be the sda.music...) which is my girlfriends phone, produces many freaking errors lately.
so i decided, to not only hardreset the device, in fact i wanted to reflash the device with WM5 or 6 so there would be some nice software and feature additions.
But i read two posts, at least, that mentioned the authors device being bricked during flash-process...
now i wanted to know if the tornado is really that vulnerable.
and what is better flashing wm5 or wm6, is wm5 more stable and final than wm6?
i think the device is shipped with WM2003(se?).
is there any possibility to back up the existing rom and extrom (if there is one), to have the original rom anywhere backuped? (to reflash it, if anything isn't nice with wm5/6)
greetings
hoping for some answers.

So my new (to me) Prophet arrived today. Damn near mint condition. Quickly unlocked it, and popped in my sim.
G4 too. Pleasant surprise.
Next stage of course is to get the most useful ROM onto it so I can happily bimble about knowing that even at total power loss, I'll still have cool stuff on there when I plug it back in.
I'm glad to see there's a good selection of shipped ROMs available, but there's no info on the differences between them.
I'm not *****ing about this. There's a lot of phones to cover, and only so much time people can spare.
So I'm thinking, those who've installed one obviously know what's on it. Just list the ROM, and spew out the details on what it contains. Then later on someone can come through the thread, copy the info, edit it up and dump it on the wiki.
So, what's the spec of the original ROMs? The modded ones? Extensions?
Mine's currently a standard Orange ROM, as far as I'm aware. WM5, (5.1.195 (Build 14847.2.0.0)). All default aside from undoing the simlock.
ROM version: 2.10.1.22 WWE
ROM date: 2/16/06
Radio version: 02.07.20
Protocol version: 413.1.03
ExtROM version: 2.10.1.107
Operator version: 13.10.1.107
I freely admit I don't know much in-depth here yet, but I'm eager to help fill in gaps in the knowledge base if I can. If this sort of direct sugestion is out of line, just let me know.
I think the information required on each would need to be:
OS and other version info
Bundled software
Any special features
Any tweaks (for non-standard ROMs, I should think)
Does that sound about right?
~ Sci
Good question, but I think the flashaholics on here are too busy doing wm6 roms.
I guess you are asking, is it worth trashing the shipped orange rom for the jesterz aku2.2 rom. Probably, but check out on the htc site to see if your m600 is still in warranty as you may void that if you flash with jesterz (don't think there is a way back to orange rom with a G4 - from what I've read).
Anyone else want to chip in?
don't look back
The variations of rom available seem far better then the overweight Orange version. can't seem to rid my M600 of the Orange start up screen when first booting, but thats the only time I see it....
btw....excellent idea to list available roms, but maybe a little to transient to remain relevant for very long.... additional pics would be good too...
Well, I don't really care about the warrenty. I didn't buy it new, and I've probably already invalidated anything by unlocking it.
As for the "jesterz aku2.2" ROM, I wasn't asking about it specificly. Why's it such a good one to go with?
I don't even know what benefits there might be in upgrading to a WM version 6 ROM.
But anyway, there's four basic categories it seems..

I THINK that's correct, because the original ROM list doesn't specify wether the ROMs are WM5 or 6.
The contributed ones though do seem to have good listings for the included software and tweaks though. Just need an easy way to break them down. Maybe into categories? Communications, tools, media, etc, etc..
I got my Vodafone1605 with wm5 installed. Do I lose my warranty(I bought it from Vodafone) if I apply official HTC WM6 upgrade for Hermes?
in a word, no.
Few things you should do first tho.
First off, if you want to use your phone with other network sim cards try unlocking it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
Dont CID unlock though, cos that will remove your warranty. Basicly follow the install procedure, but when it asks what you want to do just tick network unlock.
Then you should install Hard SPL v7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
Its a very very simple install that will not screw your warranty, but will allow you to install any rom, be it official or a cooked one and will make it much less likely to brick your phone.
You will probably get bored off the official rom really quickly, so its worth looking at a cooked rom, they offer better features, run faster, take up less room and look a lot better.
Heres two I would recommend.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=349338
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359458
and keep an eye on this, looks gooood
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363782
One thing you should remember, there is always a risk of ****ing up your phone when upgrading the rom, radio or anything. Hard SPL removes 99.99% of that risk, but there is still always a chance. But there is guides here of what do if anything happens.

Any other questions have a search on the forum, if you cant find anything ask, someone should help.
Hi,
There are no official software up dates for the V1605 available from Vodafone. If you do decide to change the software to something that isn't supported by Vodafone you will in fact invalidate the warranty.
We have explained this in more detail here.

Funny how my device was replaced under warranty after id flashed it a dozen times, I just installed the original rom again and now one said a thing.
does the hard spl backup the original rom?
no, hardspl allows you install different roms. If you want to revert to the original rom you can. Its on this site.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades
Its one of the two english vodafone ones....
I found a CD in the phone package and there are windows mobile 5 geniune stickers and eula and stuff like that, can the original rom be there?
Not likely.
so where can I get the original ROM? It's czech vodafone rom
Czech rom doesnt seem to be on this site, it will be around somewhere tho.
I just managed to get the original rom. So, if I flash now, are you absolutely sure that after the "flash the original rom back" thing they won't recognize anything at the repair service?
PLS, quick reply, I'm deciding whether to get a cashback for the SDHC or to keep it

And if I copy THE WHOLE content of the memory card to my HDD, flash some wm6 rom, will it be recognized if I just put those old files back? It won't be like the original, will it?

The contents of your memory card will still be threr after you flash a newer ROM to the device, the memory card isnt changed at all.
I would recommend you take some time to read through the WIKI PAGES on the hermes before continuing with any upgrades.
Hello
I noticed a very annoying bug at my phone: sometimes when I end a call the phone function stalls (the icon on the upper bar shows conversation in progress)
The only way to use the phone function again is to soft reset it. Lately I get the same problem but without the icon that shows conversation in progress. During this time all the incoming calls are not prompted. Basically on the caller side my phone "rings" but my phone doesn't even notice the incoming call. This prevents me from receiving very important calls that affect my business.
I cannot upgrade my ROM (1.14.479.3 ) since there is no official version for my region.
Any of you have this problem ? Shall I bring it to service ?
Please tell me your thoughts
SR
seems like a software issue, which region is your phone in? have you tried updating your software through HTC website?
For Romania there is no official version released. I cant upgrade ROM/Radio without losing my warranty.
i had the same problem after installed a hot fix from HTC, even hard reset and reinstall the ICR program the phone just lockup when I made a call. I can talk in that call but the whole phone just won't response to any keys or touch screen. After 2 days playing around with countless hard reset I decided to flash the same ROM from computer and the problem seems gone now.

Sure you can You are currently using a WWE ROM right? You can use USPL or HSPL to flash a newer official WWE ROM. In the event you need to return the phone just flash the original ROM (and SPL) back to your phone and they will never know. The original ROM you are running now is available on the Wiki, and here is a direct link. If you need help flashing ROM's you can read the guide in my signature and post questions in that thread
On a side note- I have had that issue before as well. It does seem like a bug in some software on the ROM as flashing different ROM's seems to make it go away (or reappear )
My phone's screen stopped responding few weeks ago and I brought it to service. They changed its front side with a brand new one (I am not sure if the screen only because I even get better audio quality during calls). I am telling you this just to underline that when I took it back from service the ROM was flashed again (same version though) because the menus used to be in English and now they are in Romanian. So if I am not mistaking my hard resets + services ROM flashing (into the same version though ) didn't fix this issue.
@Digital Outcast:
I am aware that I am able to use a newer ROM. I read the wiki and I know how to do it but if for some reason what I mentioned above (screen completely stopped responding and it was changed) happens while the new ROM is on the phone I will lose my warranty.
Since I opened this issue I changed the sim with a newer one. The old one was 7 years old...
Thank you for your feedback and for letting me know I am not the only phone owner having this annoying bug.
As stated by Tnyynt on another thread
Official updates go by as original ROM, they install without HardSPL if there is an update for your version of the device, so if you have an Official ROM which you have flashed, there's no need to worry for warranty.

Basically, any of the official rom updates for your device available on HTC or wiki can be flashed to your phone without HSPL or USPL and will not void warranty.
I tried with this one but when I insert my serial it says its not available for my region.
http://www.htc.com/www/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=179&act=sd&cat=2
Still I managed to download it using some serial I found on the web. But when I started the flashing process it says its not meant for my phone and aborted
Is your phone branded? Did you get it new? I ask because it doesn't look like it was a WWE device...
I bought it brand new from an online store. I didn't buy it from a provider like Vodafone or Orange.
One of my colleagues bought it from Vodafone few days ago and he has exactly the same ROM version as I have. None of us is able to download the previously mentioned ROM version from HTC website using the imei.
RUU_BlackStone_HTC_WWE_EastEurope_1.14.479.3_Radio _52.49a.25.26_1.09.25.14_Ship is the ROM you currently have on your phone. There are no "official" updates for your particular CID.
Your real only current choice if you want to flash a newer HTC ROM would be to use USPL or HSPL and flash another official WWE ROM. You could always flash back the original if you needed to return the phone for warranty purposes. Sorry bud.
Thanks for summing it up for me.
PS: changing the sim with a newer one did not help, in case somone wants to do this.
HI,
I keep reading questions about ROM and flashing the phone, can someone explain what ROM is and flashing the phone please? I have tried search on this forum and get no answers. I have googled ROM and it tells me that it is a permanent storage chip, but if that's the case how come there are upgrades and why do people talk about erasing them?
Also, I've read that in the UK only ROM upgrades supplied by the service provider are allowed without invalidating warranty. If that's the case does this mean that you can't fiddle/tweak the phone without losing the warranty, or is there still plenty of tweaking you can do?
Finally, with UK phones can you still use apps and cabs from sites like this or would that invalidate warranty as well?
Cheers

Technically a ROM chip is just that- a Read Only Memory chip that holds fixed information.
In Windows Mobile (and general phone) terms, the ROM has come to mean the software (or firmware) that is loaded into the ROM chip. So, for the HD2, if you look in Device Information you will see a ROM version. For release this was 1.43, but HTC have since released V1.48 and there are some engineering samples of V1.61 around as well.
Flashing the phone means the process of installing a new ROM image into the ROM chip. Official versions are executed using a ROM Update Utility (RUU) while the phone is connected to the PC, but 'cooked' versions are more often executed from the memory card.
In general, you can only update the ROM with one designed for that phone unless you make some changes to the BIOS, which involves installing a sub-program called Hard SPL. Once that is installed, you can then update the phone with any compatible ROM. Currently there is no Hard SPL available for the HD2, but the specialists are working on it
In the meantime there is a workaround to allow the loading of official ROM images from other locales or operators, but again this needs some specific changes being made to the memory card from which it is loaded.
The warranty situation is far from clear. Technically you should only update a device with a ROM image supplied by the operator, or by HTC if it was bought SIM free; however, the HD2 has been supplied pretty much the same as SIM free models by Vodafone and O2. Vodafone contradict themselves in their advice- one paragraph says you can install an 'official' update, but another paragraph says you can't.
Installing cooked ROMs (when they become available) would definitely invalidate any warranty.

Think of the ROM as the operating system of the phone. Both the software itself and the memory chips it is stored on are called ROM, but when you see people discussing ROMs here they will generally mean the software. So the software ROM (ie operating system) is stored on the phones ROM (ie Read Only Memory). It's called read only, but it's not - it can be erased and a new software ROM flashed to it.

If you bought your phone from a service provider, they will have locked the ability to upgrade the ROM, to ensure that you can only install official upgrades issued by them. This is why many people are waiting for Hard SPL to be completed, as it removes this lock. However, you can tweak your phone and and install as much software as you want without affecting your warranty.

You can install all the apps and cabs you like without affecting your warranty. A simple hard reset will always return the phone to its 'fresh out of the box' state.
Installing HardSPL and custom roms will invalidate your warranty, but tweaks and cab files won't.
edit - Neil, you beat me to it
My previous phone, an O2 Xda Orbit 2 had a custom ROM and was twice repaired under warranty without problem or question from O2, although both these were hardware related problems.

I guess you were lucky - many people have had their warranty voided by HTC and/or a telco for having custom firmware installed.
Many thanks for the advice, very helpful
