I've strongly been considering buying an EVO but a few things concern me:
With the hero it was rather hard to root/get a custom rom going, I really want a stock or rooted version of Froyo on EVO to take advantage of free hotspotting and other features. It seems that there is a push to get a froyo rom going but I have no idea.
The nexus one seems to have a ton of support but less features. I'd rather not get a nexus one but it gets stock everything and the mod support seems to be a bit better.
Any ideas on what to do? Should I be patient and wait for the support for the EVO to come in? Is there a big push to get stock/root/modded version of froyo going on the EVO? What to do xda?
Wait for the Evo. As soon as it's released to the public, there will be a HUGE push for getting it rooted and customized. This is HTC's best phone to date, so there's no way the entire XDA community is just going to ignore it.
thats what I'm thinking. As soon as I watched the I/O conference though I fell in love with Froyo. I wanna avoid the 30 dollar hotspot premium as much as possible and when I saw it was gonna be in Froyo without having to go through a carrier I was ecstatic. I sure hope there's a push for it.
They're already working on rooting the EVO. It is supposed to get an official Froyo update in July, but it will most likely be rooted by then.

I see, well the only problem with the official froyo update is that sprint will most likely take out the built in hotspot capability in place of their own.
Since the source was released I thought we would see a lot more development in aosp 2.1 roms. A lot of the devs are working on 2.2 but they are still missing a lot of features. Id kill for a fully functional 2.1 aosp rom with out sense.
Anyone else feel this way?
I wouldn't mind seeing it ported either. I used the darch port for the hero, before I retired it for the Evo. Loved it.

I would love this too. Froyo is great, but I'd rather have something fully functional in AOSP. (No, if it doesn't have a working camera, it's not fully functional. Close, but no)
At least 2.1 would be good until Froyo could be perfected. I was happy with 2.1 on the hero.
I'm on the same boat as you guys, until Group is 100% I'd like to see this happen.

I think that this is what the CyanogenMod is supposed to do when it is released.
im fairly new to roms, rooting, and changing/upgrading UI's and I'd love to have the new desire hd's sense UI on my stock evo 4g but I can't find a download for it..can somebody please help me find a download that doesn't involve rooting my evo?
I haven't looked into this super heavily but last I heard the Desire Sense source code was still being poked and prodded, I don't think there's anything available yet for the evo!
:'( I still got my fingers crossed for a port

You will not find what you're looking for. If such a download existed (I don't know, I haven't looked), you would need to root to apply it. The only way you'll get the new Sense without rooting is if/when HTC and Sprint release an approved update that contains it. I think it's likely they will, as this is still a flagship phone. Maybe as a part of a Gingerbread update. But I'm sure it's still a few months away.
Until then, if it were to be ported to the Evo by the folks here, you'd need to root.
There's plenty of Desire HD/Z roms floating around. I've used them all, but I don't think any had working 4G, or cameras working.
We're going to have to wait a while.
Can't help but feel as if the samsung fascinate dev scene is dead until the release of froyo. Especially since all the core work is already completed with compiled kernels, recovery, base roms and voodoo. The only thing worth changing anymore are themes and I haven't even been doing that. Correct me if im wrong but I came from a droid 1 and even at 2.1 the dev scene was way bigger.

What exactly are you looking for? You can rearrange roms only so many times... I switched roms (d1) quite a fews times and realized there were never any significant improvements...
What this dev community has given us is decent (well maybe some more themes lol) until froyo comes about..
It would be nice to have more roms and such but you get what you get.
I noticed that too. When I had my D1, there were ROMS out the ass! Then I switched to this and have been very let down. If you want a boring theme, you're in luck! Otherwise, not so much.
I think part of the reason more people didn't jump on roms was because Samsung announced it would deliver FroYo within a month after release so creating huge numbers of 2.1 roms wasn't worthwhile at the time.
It's more or less a waiting game for 2.2 now. I think the devs are just waiting for it to drop before doing more serious work on the roms (at least a couple of people I know are).
I imagine it won't be too much farther out, within a month or so...
We saw the international version get froyo, and the Epic got theirs over the weekend, Vibrant was expected on Dec 1 but due to some circumstances it got pushed back a week or so by T-Mobile.
Stop complaining, devs are always busy and frankly do everything for us for free, these things take alot of time and effort. Frankly I'm amazed we have so much, the fascinate isn't the flagship that the D1 was for verizon despite how sexy its hardware is. And to be honest its hard, to imagine my phone getting much better than it is now with dj05 the latest voodoo 5 build and some awesome themer goodness.

Sounds about right our device came out last to, I'm going samsung gives us an early christmas present, come here car dock audio out =D
what exactly is it you guys are looking for?
there are new kernels every day and the roms that are out are fine...theres really only so many ways you can reconfigure a touchwiz based rom anyway until there is an aosp breakthrough
I'm just happy to have what we currently have now.
Rockin' DJ05, Minimal Icognito, with Voodoo5
If Samsung released decent source code, there may be more ROMs than what is available now, but they didn't so everything had to be just stripped down versions of what shipped with the phone. The devs have been trying to get an AOSP rom going, but I don't know the status of that.
I think there would be some AOSP roms out there. Feels like all the roms out there are based of JTs and the others are just themed. Love the kernal development from everyone. I'm actually rocking a stock rom with StupidFast because I prefer the stock feel. I wouldn't mind a nice stock rom with the some memory management improvements, removed bloat and bing removed.

I've been wondering for a while, what would it mean to have an aosp breakthrough? That is, what is holding things up, and once this is resolved will future versions of aosp be easier to build? Feel free to be very technical and precise if that's what it takes to explain, and thanks! I love your theme.
I've owned my G2 since it's been out, and I have to say that I'm starting to get bored with it. I have it rooted and I've flashed just about every ROM that's been released for it. Sadly, all the recent ROM development is for ICS, and most of those are in alpha/beta stages. I need something new, fresh and is close to 100% bug-free as possible. I've played with most of the Sense based ROMs, MIUI, and CM7 creations, but my primary DD has been CM7.1 Stable.
Just thought I'd share my thoughts here, see if I'm not alone in this, and what others have done to get out of this rut.

My contract won't expire for about a year, and I'll more than likely be leaving TMO as their service is horrible in my new place. That's an issue that really isn't tolerable at all, but my boredom comes from the decline in ROM development for this kick ass phone. Sure, it's an older phone, but it's still a great phone that other phones can't compete with. Also, I tried ICS and I honestly wasn't all that impressed with it. I still enjoyed running Froyo and love Gingerbread, and wish I had the skills/talent to develop updated/enhanced flavors of Sense/AOSP/MIUI based ROMs. There's many to choose out there, but as I said so many of them are in alpha/beta stages with the prevalent "camera not working" bug.
The purpose of this thread was more so to see what ROMs people were using as their DDs, but based on your question I'd be interested to hear what G2 owners have upgraded their phones to as well. I love my G2 and will be sad to part ways with it when that day comes.

Google was my friend, and the S is coming out for TMO and X for AT&T.
I'm getting equally bored. My contract isn't up till next jan but I'm thinking of trading in for an asus padfone. This will also replace my asus transformer. I enjoy the keyboard on the DZ but I just feel there is a drop in gingerbread development and ICS is in need of proper drivers. Maybe things will change when the DHD get official update.

Unconfirmed rumors indicate the X may be coming to T-Mobile (in addition to the S), and also coming to Sprint as the "EVO One" of "EVO HD".

The fact that the HTC One S has no micro sd card slot is a def deal breaker for me. I've been using miui as my daily driver. I would love to see a smooth ics miui rom released

Regardless of speed, miuiv4 doesn't have the same feel for me as gingerbread based. It just lacks the user friendly experience.

I've been using gb miui for nearly the time I've had this phone (about 6 months). I've played with the HTC one x and galaxy note and without custom roms I don't think they are any smoother in general interface than what I have (overclock to 1.5 helps). However you are right, I've also tried nearly every rom out there and after a few hours or days running an ics rom I always come back to miui because it's bug free and fast.
Development has slowed lately, probably because they've run out of things to improve, but there are a few ics development teams improving their roms on a weekly basis so in a couple of months I'd hope for a near perfect ics version.
Saying that I'll be getting a galaxy note in a few days because I still want something new and different.

I am also extremely interested in finding out which the roms the community is using as their daily rom. Like OP I have flashed most of the roms and now am just looking for the most stable rom.
ILWT all the way!
I first flashed it in February and have come back to it every time I've flashed another ROM. That's more that can be said of any other ROM I've had.
Supersmooth performance, stable and everything works.
In regards to the phone itself; this is the first phone I've ever had where I'm actually reluctant to get another because I don't want to let it go. I bought my DZ about 14 months ago. I'm not bound to any contract so that is not why I keep it around. I'm guessing it must be true love

I've tried them all, literally, and I keep coming back to CM 7.1.0 Stable with it OC'd at 1200 MHz. I don't believe I've ever experienced an issue, except for the fact that TMO coverage in my area sucks ass.

Rocking ILWT. It's one of the best CM7 ROM's around, and my personal favourite. I also find myself coming back to it. =]
I just flashed ILWT and I'm impressed with it, although it's not very different than CM7. I do like the Aroma installer, very nice touch.
G lite all the way baby

I am using Andromadus Audacity b2 as daily driver and it is very smooth after i understood that I should use 4ext superwipe not 3ext...
