Any indication about release date?
Hero support? That's actually the bad thing about hero. We will have to check if HTC decides to upgrade to the new android, while with Magic it will keep being supported..
Why would they update the Magic but not the Hero?

Noob.
Please research before posting.
A vanilla Google os gets updates ota through their provider, while HTC has to make a hero build seperate

cuz HTC made their version of Android using SenseUI so its not directly supported by Google. HTC will have to cook us up and update, test sense and release
I wouldn't worry too much about Eclair just yet because:
a) The Eclair development SDK hasn't been released yet.
b) We don't even have Donut!
Of course, if Eclair does ship before year end, there is always a chance that HTC might decide so skip Donut entirely, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Regards,
Dave
motorola are to start shippng phones running 2.0 from the beginning of november so htc may decide to skip donut.

i reallyyy doubt that motorola will be shipping soon
id put an estimate at the years end
Could you not install 1.6 or 2.0 without HTC sense though? Whether it came from HTC or from Google.
Sorry if I'm being a "noob" but we don't all spent all our time playing with our phones and reading up on them. Some of us just like making old fashioned phone calls.

I suppose it can be done. But i rather have 1.5 with sense than 1.6 / 2.0 without it. Ill wait for HTC since im just fine with what i have now

1 thing to know btw.......
what exactly sense is? is it only the fancy thing with curve menu system and 7 home screens? or is it something integrated part of the android OS without which the OS cant even run?
i want to know this because for last 2 days i have been running without the sense home screen and it feels good with that simple and plain homescreen.
The Sens is the user interface that you c on your hero. i don't like the sens uit it slows down the phone. all the htc software for android are really really bad. i prefer the android plane OS.
HTC don't want to release the hero kernel, if they release it we will be able to install android OS without all the UI from htc.
you say you're running hero without sense home screen. you maybe don't see the home screen but it is still using your ram and running services on the background.
i'm looking forward to android 2.0 it looks great. and if you look @ www.droidoes.com you will see that verizon is gonna release their android 2.0 in november. but i still don't see any sdk for it what is weird :s.
the only thing we can do is to wait and see what happens next month

My guess is that the November date is just a date for a press conference or announcement of the phone, with the actual release date comes a month or two later. Besides the Android 2.0, it is nice to see that the hardware specification of smartphones is finally moving forward, i.e. manufacturers finally move to faster CPU, more memory, and bigger screen with higher resolution, rather than keep recycling the Qualcomm 528Mhz CPU and HVGA screen that powered to many devices over the last few years.
Is the locale language in menus, keyboards and dictionaries, a part of sence. Or would that be possible to have in a more native android version (like magic).

Personally, I'm dying for 1.6 because I feel handicapped & shackled by the soft keyboard, and urgently need the Gesture support from 1.6 to do Graffiti-like handwriting recognition. If Gestures were implemented as a shared lib that could be installed to 1.5 in addition to being an inherent part of 1.6 I wouldn't mind as much, but as it stands with 1.5, text input is just painfully frustrating, and has really put me off from exploring things I'd otherwise be spending lots of time playing with. I shudder to even think about trying to launch a Perl or Python app from the shell one painfully-fighting-with-prediction-and-losing-badly letter at a time. Prediction and autocorrection might be tolerable for t3xt msg3z, but falls flat on its face and dies a horrible death when you're trying to type something in camelCase with inline.punctuation.

The original T-Mobile US G1 firmware (Android 1.0) had a voice dialler! Are you sure you're not thinking of the text-to-speech engine that's in 1.6?

Swedish android site swedroid.se published a little snippet from a members communication with HTC about 1.6 for HERO.
Dear HTC customer,
The Hero will not be receiving the Android 1.6 upgrade, it will however get the 2.0 one. Do note however that we do not have a confirmed release date for this upgrade, all I can recommend at the moment is that you keep yourself updated by visiting our website regularly as the latest information will be available to view from there.
Best regards,

If we get 2.0 not to far from now I really won't miss 1.6 either really. Kernel sources + 2.0 in a not so distant future is acceptable if 1.6 is not released. Thoughts?
Really????
I was looking forward to the release of 1.6 for my Hero!
Ah well, roll on Android 2.0, Hopefully this will be very soon.
I wont miss 1.6, i'd rather get 2.0 and skip donut all together.
2.0 gets free google nav software
Hmm - i prefer small incremental updates.
2.0 will be atleast 2(?) months off?
maybe, i think by christmas...wouldn't that be nice
1.6 was a nice to have, but 2.0 looks like it's going to improve quite a few. Lets hope they get it out soon, looks like the Moto Droid is already running 2.0 - released Nov 6th.

Thx for this update. I was in contact with HTC via email recently (about 2 weeks) and at this time they told me they don't know yet if an updated ROM based on 1.6 will be released (and when).
Today I wrote them again regarding 2.0 (before I saw this thread), so I'll keep you up to date here as soon they get back to me ...
...then I waiting Android 2.0
Is good.
This is also confirmed on the HTC Twitter feed.. http://twitter.com/htc
is this going to be for gsm again and no cdma?!
Using the Rogers' (crippled) version of magic running 1.5
its got google maps 3.1.x.
i remember when i was running one of the rooted roms on 1.6 i could upgrade upto the latest google maps 3.4 via the market.
however, for 1.5, google maps doesn't even show up in market. im afraid that the highest version for the app for 1.5 is indeed 3.1.x with no sight of an upgrade in the near future.
can anyone confirm/deny this?
thanks.
confirmed

Hopefully that will be available for HTC Magics bought in Norway too ..
is there a reason that you don't want to upgrade? At the very minimum, upgrade to 1.6 and Tmobile will continue to support the phone. I see no reason to stay at 1.5. Help me understand the rationale here.

Yes, eventually.
Based on my assumption that your phone has the Sense UI update from Rogers, that means you have the perfected SPL.
So until HTC releases the Android 2.1 + Sense UI update you're probably out of luck (unless someone finds an exploit in the perfected SPL and then you probably could load up a custom Android 1.6 or greater ROM).
I know it sucks being stuck at 1.5 but patience will pay off. The Dream won't even get an update past 1.5, the MT3G and G1 are still in limbo as they aren't sure if they will even get a 2.X update, let alone with Sense UI.
We are very fortunate** as Rogers HTC Magic owners, as we are the only HTC Magic in the world to have official confirmation of a 2.1 + Sense UI update. (Thanks to the hard work and dedication of people like at the iwantmyonepointsix blog)
**NOTE: When I say fortunate, not for the perfected SPL but for the fact that a fully functional Android 2.1 + Sense UI update will be released that was designed for our phones so will have pretty much perfect functionality.
dose any one think there will be a port of 2.2 standard build to the Hero as this would be a good thing as it has flash & jit built in.
Sent from my aHero using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I don't think so..
I don't believe that HTC will invest money and time to develop it..
I doubt HTC would invest in a port anyway.. But I sure see some chance of the Legend being updated and this rom being portable by some rom genius to the Hero, why not?
Assuming there are any Hero's existing at the time an actual update to 2.2 will be available for the Legend
Ofcourse. This doesn't need to be done by HTC.
We've seen many ports for the Hero. We had 1.6 and then 2.1 ported to the Hero, before the Legend roms were even leaked. Just recently the MyTouch Slide (HTC Espresso) has been ported to the Hero, so I don't see why we won't see 2.2 (Froyo) on the Hero.
It's not only down to porting it from the Legend, we could see a port from a new device, not yet released.
There's no point waiting for HTC to officially release 2.1 or 2.2. The custom roms on here are a better option and to be honest, I don't think I'll even update to the official 2.1 release when it eventually comes out, because Sense on the MyTouch Slide port is far better. Obviously I will if they update to this new version of Sense, but I doubt they'll do that.
But yes, I'm confident we will see Froyo on the Hero, not officially from HTC however.
wtf is this!2.2?They sureley havent finished 2.1 yet!

I think minor updates like 2.2 should be easily possible after the HTC Hero gets the OTA Update possibility during the 2.1 update.
I don't think that HTC needs to put in much ressources for minor updates.
At least this is what i expect, because if EVERY minor update is handled like the 2.1 one with long delays, then many people will think twice before getting an HTC device. But only time will tell...
from what i read it would have to be custom 2.2 as it will have jit built in and the sense ui is not compatable yet. also woulnt 2.1 drivers be easyer to port to 2.2 than 1.5 to 2.1.
Sent from my aHero using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I don't think the hero will be able to keep up enough to run 2.2.
Since it has flash 10.1 and the hero isn't powerful enough to run it. Maybe a cleaned out version.
i dont mind about flash as i wouldnt use it for videos as android has a youtube app for most the videos i watch would be ok for other flash stuff but i know what you mean about speed but the hero as standard came with htc flash and thhat worked ok

Well, in my humble opinion, with some overcloacking, and jit, i think we could think about running 2.2, so in my opinion yes, there is a possibility, the problem is to get a 2.2 kernel source...
I'd love getting 2.2 on my Hero, with all the auto-updating and individual stock program updates automatically being pushed to your device.
There will be no 2.2 for Heros ... and Google (not HTC) is the reason for this. For Froyo they will upgrade the kernel from 2.6.29 (used for Android 1.6,2.0,2.1) to 2.6.3x and no one at HTC will take the effort to update the drivers for the Hero. There will be minor bug fixes for the 2.1 Hero release, but no major upgrade in future.
Google sucks, HTC sucks and if they keep it this way, Android fragmentation will suck even more.

How does using the latest kernel (with bug fixes, and many new features) make it google's fault. It's HTC who won't be bothered to update drivers etc (to be fair on them, the hero is an old handset for them and there's no point for them to do it)
Whatever bugs are in the kernel, Google already fixed/patched them for the Android 2.6.29 kernel. The kernel adaption they are doing are minor (power management, OpenBinder, etc.). So there is no real reason to upgrade that often. They kept the kernel stable for 3 version and now they are breaking compatibility again - why?
Look at MontaVista, Windriver and many others that do embedded Linux and guess how often they update kernels? However I agree with you that Heros will possibly not be able to run Froyo properly anyhow, so why bother with them? Overall it is a frustrating experience - but don't get me wrong here, despite this update odysee I am more than happy with my Android powered device and my next one will be Android again. Maybe not from HTC, and maybe I will not be awaiting any updates that eagerly again but let's see what comes next.
The chances of getting 2.2 are practically none. As has been stated, 2.2 will be using an upgraded kernel from 2.1. The only reason we have 2.1 ROM's at the moment is because there was a hacked leaked kernel from HTC (which is why it is buggy and has poor battery life), so unless HTC actually commit to an official release for the hero, even the geniuses here at XDA wouldn't be able to get 2.2 running on our Hero's.
I'm looking at this in a logical way. I could be wrong, but...
Android operating system takes up x amount of space in the architecture to work. We know the x10 in standard form needs a task killer to speed it up and free up memory.
Surely, if 2.1 or 2.2 are to be more feature rich and the sony apps to be better, surely they will take up more space in the operating system. There fore taking z amount of space.
Won't this crash the x10? This is my thoughts for the delaying tactics of SE.
Discuss?
I think they have the same problem as the devs here, can't crack their own bootloader.
You are probably right, I'm just trying to add a little hearted humour in
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
I don't need a task killer to speed it up and free up memory.. So I don't believe that would be an issue, and there are plenty other phones out there running 2.1 with less memory.

I always assumed RAM and flash memory were different? Maybe I'm just mistaken because I assume it's like on a computer?

Flash mem is the harddrive. The 384/256 is ram.
And you could say the bootloader is (kinda) the BIOS.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
But if 1.6 fits in with the architecture of the x10, 2.1 could be bigger and not function correctly due to not enough memory say... thats my concern.
Personally time scape could go for me if 2.1 was to work
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
The core architechure of 1.6 and 2.1 are very very similar. There won't be any noticeable size difference betwen the two operating systems. Ram and CPU usage is actually supposed to be much more effecient in 2.1, so it shouldn't have trouble on that front (plus we've seen phones with similar specs running 2.1/2.2 already).
As far as cracking their own bootloader, they shouldn't need to. The bootloader and their own ROMs are designed to function with each other. If they know their own code, they shouldn't have any problems updating the kernel. The reason our XDA devs are having so much trouble is because there is a huge difference between updating or using your own bootloader that you coded, and reverse engineering the entire thing to work with a different OS.
IMO Sony just isn't putting enough people on the project. I wouldn't be surprised if it's one lonely programmer in their basement working on the 2.1 update at the rate it's going.
I look at it from how ive dealt with faulty equipment. They cant get it to work, so they hold it back rather than screw up x10 and upset mobile carriers. Seen a lot of be rate fixes in the past to get round faults created by design engineers on stupid budgets or trying to save a few quid.

Even that one person could be working part-time for it to take this long. I read the SE developers also worked on Sony's NEX cameras. NEX camera's are getting update next month. So, their developers must be working on NEX camera software, X10 update, X10mini updates, maybe even X8, Vivaz, Windows Phone 7, and the next generation Android (read PSPPhone) phones, and their very own feature phones.
I think (read hope that SE changed his mind and right now they are cooking FroYo for us in absolutte secrecy and keeps us living in disillusion we´re gonna get Eclair soon.. You never know what can happen on Christmas
I think it's more of an 'Oh **** we've been rooted' and 'Oh ****! XDA devs are breaking our bootloader', so they are waiting and watching to see what other holes are used to close them over.
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
Android is a OS like any other, the update to 2.1 will replace 1.6 not installed beside it, from what we know the X10 has 1GB intrenal storage for Android (OS) and installed applications, memory (RAM) is not in this 1GB but there is word that the 2.1update will unlock some more RAM that 1.6 could not alocate.
tell me if i have anything wrong but updateing to 2.1 will be like having Vista on you pc and formating the harddrive and installing win7
It goes like this:
1.6 = Windows XP
2.0 = Windows XP Service Pack 2
2.1 = Windows Vista
2.2 = Windows 7
Except that the X10 is far more powerful that XP (in this example) can support.
