Android 2.0 Eclair - Hero, G2 Touch General

Any indication about release date?
Hero support? That's actually the bad thing about hero. We will have to check if HTC decides to upgrade to the new android, while with Magic it will keep being supported..

Why would they update the Magic but not the Hero?

A vanilla Google os gets updates ota through their provider, while HTC has to make a hero build seperate

cuz HTC made their version of Android using SenseUI so its not directly supported by Google. HTC will have to cook us up and update, test sense and release

I wouldn't worry too much about Eclair just yet because:
a) The Eclair development SDK hasn't been released yet.
b) We don't even have Donut!
Of course, if Eclair does ship before year end, there is always a chance that HTC might decide so skip Donut entirely, but I wouldn't bet on it.
Regards,
Dave

motorola are to start shippng phones running 2.0 from the beginning of november so htc may decide to skip donut.

i reallyyy doubt that motorola will be shipping soon

Could you not install 1.6 or 2.0 without HTC sense though? Whether it came from HTC or from Google.
Sorry if I'm being a "noob" but we don't all spent all our time playing with our phones and reading up on them. Some of us just like making old fashioned phone calls.

1 thing to know btw.......
what exactly sense is? is it only the fancy thing with curve menu system and 7 home screens? or is it something integrated part of the android OS without which the OS cant even run?
i want to know this because for last 2 days i have been running without the sense home screen and it feels good with that simple and plain homescreen.

The Sens is the user interface that you c on your hero. i don't like the sens uit it slows down the phone. all the htc software for android are really really bad. i prefer the android plane OS.
HTC don't want to release the hero kernel, if they release it we will be able to install android OS without all the UI from htc.
you say you're running hero without sense home screen. you maybe don't see the home screen but it is still using your ram and running services on the background.
i'm looking forward to android 2.0 it looks great. and if you look @ www.droidoes.com you will see that verizon is gonna release their android 2.0 in november. but i still don't see any sdk for it what is weird :s.
the only thing we can do is to wait and see what happens next month

My guess is that the November date is just a date for a press conference or announcement of the phone, with the actual release date comes a month or two later. Besides the Android 2.0, it is nice to see that the hardware specification of smartphones is finally moving forward, i.e. manufacturers finally move to faster CPU, more memory, and bigger screen with higher resolution, rather than keep recycling the Qualcomm 528Mhz CPU and HVGA screen that powered to many devices over the last few years.

Is the locale language in menus, keyboards and dictionaries, a part of sence. Or would that be possible to have in a more native android version (like magic).

> I suppose it can be done. But i rather have 1.5 with sense than 1.6 / 2.0 without it.

Personally, I'm dying for 1.6 because I feel handicapped & shackled by the soft keyboard, and urgently need the Gesture support from 1.6 to do Graffiti-like handwriting recognition. If Gestures were implemented as a shared lib that could be installed to 1.5 in addition to being an inherent part of 1.6 I wouldn't mind as much, but as it stands with 1.5, text input is just painfully frustrating, and has really put me off from exploring things I'd otherwise be spending lots of time playing with. I shudder to even think about trying to launch a Perl or Python app from the shell one painfully-fighting-with-prediction-and-losing-badly letter at a time. Prediction and autocorrection might be tolerable for t3xt msg3z, but falls flat on its face and dies a horrible death when you're trying to type something in camelCase with inline.punctuation.

HTC Hero interface

any chance to get it working on rhodium??
see the video...
http://www.macitynet.it/macity/aA38603/htc_hero_arriva_il_terzo_android_con_nuova_interfaccia.shtml
Nice interface, but I think it's a very long way off any hope of being ported for the Rhodium, and thats if anyone sees it as a great advantage. It would be a massive project.
Seems to be largely based on TF3D, just remoulded, and probably re-engineered. Looks a lot smoother, but then again it's only a video and they can make it look as smooth as they like! Certainly has all the trademarks of a HTC interface though....like a cross between TF3D and PointUI.
When is this device out anyway? It would be typical of HTC to announce a new one, only weeks after we've all forked out for our Rhodiums!
here's hoping HTC bundle something similar with their 6.5 update for the rhodium!
We shouldn't need to port it.
In a press release HTC have stated that the Sense UI will be rolled out across all HTC handsets, regardless of OS.

i hope so...but knowing htc i think the new interface will be available for new devices (devices released after the HTC Hero...)...i hope im wrong...
I don't think so, they have promised upgrades to 6.5 for diamond 2 and touch pro 2 owners (as part of the sales blurb) and i imagine this is their big push at doing something different, creating a consistent user interface throughout their range regardless of OS.
I think they really want to dominate and they're certainly doing a good job so far.
Now if only I could get flash working with the default browser...

Can I install cupcake / donut to my htc hero?

Hi,
This is my first post here. I got my htc hero a couple days ago and I've spent most of that time tinkering with it. I'm generally loving it, although I prefer the original android home screen to htc's custom interface. I've noticed that some things like the phonebook are quite laggy, and am under the impression that android's stock phonebook would feel much snappier.
So I would like to install a stock cupcake or donut android to my phone. The thing is, I'm really new to this so I'm not even sure if it's possible. Can it be done? Has any of you guys done it? Even if I succeed, will I be able to use my phone to call and send messages, or will I need to do extra stuff? Can I backup everything in my phone, so that I'll be able to revert it if I break something or I decide that no, the sense ui was better after all?
You see that's a lot of questions, I really hope you guys can give me a hand with this.
Cheers!
After reading some other threads, I think I have some of my questions answered. But do you guys know if any of the stock android builds works with the hero? Can I install anything to it, apart from the system that came with the phone?
you can only install Hero builds on your phone! currently there are none as the phone just came out. So just be patient. If you think the UI is too laggy.. clear default home screen and use regular launcher..
The HTC touchflo stuff works on top of android so If you REALLY wanted to revert back to basic android then i guess you could after rooting and installing a basic android ROM. WARNING though, i dont think that has been done yet. reasons in include
WHY WHY WHY?
Hero has exchange support, basic flash support.

Anyway, if I use nandroid to backup my system I shouldn't risk anything right?
I think I'll just wait but, can you point me to a basic android Rom? I've seen there are lots of them and I would't know which one to pick.

And you would lose this 'awesome' keyboard!
Just turn off SenseUI. The rest of Android runs underneath.
Where are the default Calendar and Contact apps ?
I'm in exactly the same boat as frandavid100. I love the Hero's hardware, but most of SenseUI is too flashy; I don't care about most of the improvements (seven home screens, irritating widgets, lots of Facebook/Twitter/Flickr integration, exchange support) and I'd say some of them are worse than the alternative (the calendar doesn't show as much information in the month view; Flash in the browser just makes websites much, much slower and doesn't work for video).
On the other hand, apparently 1.5 is much faster, and 2.0 (on release) will have multitouch in Google Maps as well as in the browser, so I'd like to get running the stock Android operating system.
I don't know anything about cooking ROMs, though, so I'll wait for a kind benefactor. Hopefully it's not just frandavid100 and I who want a faster version of Android...
Glad to see I'm not alone.
Anyway, is there a way to test the stock android keyboard and phonebook? I kinda dig htc's keyboard, with its compact qwerty layout, but I hate the phonebook and I haven't found a decent alternative in the market.

You already effectively have Cupcake on the Hero - firmware version is V1.5, which is a Cupcake build. If you just drop Sense UI, your back to almost a vanilla G1 build, which the exception you have HTC keyboards and apps as opposed to Google ones. Given that the hardware in the Hero is pretty similar to the Magic (at least those with 288mb RAM), there isn't exactly any additional "power" to harness either!
With respect to Donut, as far as I'm aware there are *no* operational Donut ROMs available for the G1, Magic, or Hero as yet.
Regards,
Dave
I do also prefer the clean fast Android interface over HTC's one, I know how to make the default home screen to be the Android one but touchflo keeps running in the backgroupd eating more than 30MB RAM and wondering if it is safe to uninstall this package and probably others too. In brief, disable the sense UI. It is maybe nice but at this point is slow compared to the Android interface
yeh, i would like to remove the touchflo altogether as it keeps running in the background even though i use the default home screen. Or at least have some sort of of startup manager to stop things running at boot.
must be out soon, there is some leaked screenshots here including the widget.
http://androidguys.com/?p=6260
OK - so the Her is already running Cupcake, but with SenseUI on top, and while you can disable some parts of SenseUI from running, you can't actually get rid of them.
In that case I think I'll wait and see what happens around Donut. If HTC release an updated Hero ROM, I'll go with that, and if they don't, I can wait for a generous ROM chef to bake a nice, basic Donut ROM for the Hero. Thanks for everyone's help.
You'll need to root your phone to do it:

Me tooo
I would love to be able to 'downgrade' my Hero to the stock android.
At the very least, I'd love an easy way to install the stock android applications on top of the HTC ones, and hopefully uninstall the ones I don't use so as to save some application space.

Donut/1.6 on HTC Hero

Hey Guys,
I was wondering that since Google is already sharing the Donut Love with G1's and Magic's when are we gonna see some Donut love for our lovely piece of Hardware we all know as HERO ...
I am guessing Htc is working on the 1.6 SDK provided by Google to integrate it with ROSIE, but i am thinking the Developers here are alot faster than the guys and HTC.
So can we get a Rosie with 1.6 which is rooted ofcourse but nothing else... no other modifications i mean.
Respect to all.

Good question, I would love to see that as well... BUT I suppose it is not possible without the kernel sourse, unless Sprint's Hero comes out with 1.6 and then its ROM is ported to our European Heros. That's up to the devs!
Well the Sprint Hero HAS to come with Donut... It's CDMA, and that's only supported in Donut, so I'm almost 100% positive it will ship with Donut.

That was what I thought. But Joshua @ Engadget told me that their Sprint Hero review unit only has Android 1.5 on it. Well, Android 1.6 added support for CDMA does not necessarily mean that one cannot write a driver for Android 1.5 to support CDMA.
But anyway, I do think that it is almost likely that HTC will release a 1.6 update for the Hero in a not too distance future.
The Google experience G1s and Magics are purely that - stock Cupcake ROMs. The Hero presents a slight challenge as HTC put a lot of love into the ROM, with the addition of SenseUI. Hopefully, it won't take that long to cook a Donut ROM with SenseUI, but just making the transition of the great innovations from HTC for the Hero will be the stumbling block for a Donut-based ROM.
HTC Response to my Donut question.
I asked when they'd release a ROM using Dognut ( 1.6 ) for the Hero.
Their reply:
Good Morning, HTC do not release the ROM updates. Google do. If you have any questions relating thier operating system, the updates, its benefits and release dates please visit www.android.com for further support. Here at HTC, we manufacture the hardware on the device and release hotfixes for when reported bugs needs resolution. If you have a technical support related query regarding the device, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Kind Regards, HTC Europe
This has constantly been my experience with HTC - ask them a question and they say contact Google.

One benefit will be being able to run any future apps that require 1.6 (use 1.6-specific API features). We already have apps that run only on 1.5 or higher...

Magic with froyo 2.2?

There were some rumors that some of the Android devices of HTC will not receive the newest update to Android Froyo 2.2. While this is partially true, we’re happy to say that HTC Magic is not included in that “black list”.
As announced by the second largest French mobile operator SFR, the device will receive the desired Froyo soon. Some believe that this will take place even in this month. T-Mobile has also plans to update myTouch 3 G which is basically the same device to Froyo by the end of this year.
Let’s say that the device looks to handle the novelties quite well, considering the fact “of not being that new”. Good job!

I sure hope so would love to have a nice custom rom with 2.2 that works and with tons of bonus stuff pre installed.
Maybe you haven't noticed, but the amazing developers here are having a field day since the froyo source was dropped in to AOSP a few days ago. CM6 should be just around the corner.
i know they are already playing with it, but with a copy from the actually phone i imagine it would be easier to mod and play with since they dont have to port and do all kinds of ridicules things to get it to work on another phone.

Remember that the 32B Magic is the ION/ADP2, everything you need to get a fully working ROM is supplied in the AOSP. What you're suggesting is probably more relevant to devices like the Hero. At any rate, we'll probably see CM6 or some other froyo ROM before a shipped one.

Android 2.1 or 2.2 ? .... 3.0 ?

Yup Yup Yup, I've decided to make a poll on the most debated Topic on here, simply i want to know if all x10 owners here feel the same way like me or not..
And also to give any new comer an idea about the status of the community, so
what do you expect you will see first on your device ?
- Devs here cracking the bootloader and Flashing a 2.2 Rom and giving us freedom to the world of modding.
- SE release the 2.1 update at the end of the month - and don't argue about the date pleaseeeeeee, i am sick of it - followed by the 2.2 update early next year which is a lot of time, but we don't have a choice...
you can get an extra point if you explain your opinion bases
One More Thing :
For Gods Sake, don't talk about :
- screen color support
- multi***** - you can guess it -
- Any other debated topic that have been discussed Zillions of times here Cause it just makes me fall asleep while reading it..
happy voting
If you don't know what is the new features you will get by updating.. here are a few from what have been posted here :
Android 2.1 :
- 720p Video recording.
- Live Wallpaper.
- Language support ( Arabic, etc.. )
- BT voice dial ( added 2.1 ? )
- more applications supported in Market ( Twitter, etc.. )
Android 2.2 :
-Have a faster phone, with JIT.
-To have faster web browsing (V8 Javascript engine).
-To be able to run ALL apps.
-To move apps to SD, if needed, to free space.
-To not have pixelated icons and images in apps - I think that this is probably due to the new resources layout - drawable-hdpi, mdpi etc.
- Flash support.
- push support for applications.
- Hotspot Option.
- 5x faster performance.
ehm - about the ( 3.0 ) in the title, its just to make the thread intersting ( don't daydream about it )
Umm here is the problem.
What are the features that make it stand out from one tier to another.
It is basically a movement of numbers to me.
What is the real differences between 1.6 ro 2.1 ?
720 recording, live wallpaper....and what else?
Then from 2.1 to 2.2
....flash support....? what else?
then from 2.2 to the rumored 3.0
No idea, maybe it shoot beams of laser or maybe allow you to call UMA.
Seriously, there are just numbers that is moving around. Things that can live or live without it. I am perfectly fine with 1.6 right now. Sorry, i am a Window XP user with 3 other pc with vista and win 7.
I still like win xp more, it feel a lot solid.

Fantastic to meet the only other person on the planet that isn't in a contest to get a higher number on the device
Upgrading for the sake of upgrading is .... fill in the blank.
I stopped the firmware upgrade at 024 since the phone is working "great" now so I don't see any value in an upgrade to 026 +. Unless something worth while is enhanced. Since there's no change log it's a little tough to see what the improvements are.
As to the Android 2.1, 2.2, 3.0, 99.9 unless there is true improvement in valid areas I could really not care less. (my personal feeling)
The ONLY feature I'm missing right now is Bluetooth Voice Dial which should have been in the very first release of Android.
2x-5x faster .. don't care, it's already fast. 720p video .... not interested. Hotspot, nope.
If you want and/or need those features then upgrading is great but the X10 pretty much already does what I need with 1.6. (except BT VD)
OMG, i felt in love with your post... Rly, we used to the updates, no matter what it brings. Diffrence between updates isn't important, the number of it is the main benefit. I think 1,6 of Xperia is rly well rounded. There is few things which should be improved, but it's rather improvement than hugh change. Im sick of reading the next post about how SE rude is waiting with upgrade to 2.1... Im not againts this, but ppl try to let it all hang out, just take a rest of writing next threats, enjoy your great mobile phone.
after 2.2 will android jump all the way too 3.0. or will they be like 2.3 and so on? just curios cause that would mean after 2.2 our phones wont be able to handle 3.0
The main benefit of 2.2 over 2.1 is the fact that it is at least twice as quick.. it's damned fast.. That would be my reason for wanting 2.2.. having said that though.. I'm not desperate for it.. my phone runs very well on 1.6..
I would love to just have 2.2.
3.0 . . I would never expect to see it unfortunately.
I really dont want 2.2 cooked firmware which has even 1 thing not working. I see a lot custom firmwares and there it says "...most of the stuff works" or "Camera not working" etc. I would NEVER put any ROM that is not 100% functional, I would rather use 2.1 that works than 3.0 that has no camera working. I really dont understand that, my last phone was Omnia HD and the man named HyperX is making custom firmwares for that phone, on his ROMs there can only be some extra stuff that are working and which are not in Samsung ROMS but everything else is working, and it is working better than Samsung original ROMs. So I really dont understand this Android ROMs, I always want clean ROM without some default apps and with everything else in it that makes the phone better, necer looking, who doesnt want it, he can easily remove it with Titanium Backup. That is my vision...
Nice to find other people happy not chasing the numbers ... I thinks Sony did a pretty fine job with 1.6. Looking forward to their version of 2.1, pretty sure they'll do a fine job of it too.
Only thing I'd slightly miffed about is no flash
I do like the Rachel UI, but an optimized FroYo ROM is better to me than official Eclair.
I don't care about upgrades at all. As already mentioned here I just want flash support and faster speed. The rest to me is pointless, sure 720p recording is cool but the more I think about how often I take videos the more I realize I probably wont take advantage of it. Remember when phones didn't have upgrades? When you bought the phone and used it for 1-2 years plus and it was the same thing the whole time? Those were the days...

More language support ?
believe me , just thinking about the whole applications that require 2.0+ , the push in 2.2 , beside all you just said..
Knowing your phone can do many things it can't do right now cause of a stupid limitation that can be fixed ... some people can't bear that thought - including me -

Exactly.

I probably won't use the 720p video recording, but probably the DLNA support.
Although, I know what you mean about the 1 to 2 years usage of phones, without an upgrade. To be honest, this only really happened with the first iPhone, and then in an even more accelerated way, with Android, and as more manufacturers are bringing out more Android phones, it means that they have to work harder to upgrade all of them at the speedy pace Google is moving at, and customize them too.
I just want the latest firmware (2.2+) to:
-Have a faster phone, with JIT.
-To have faster web browsing (V8 Javascript engine), and flash support, so that I don't have to hope that Skyfire will work for me.
-To be able to run ALL apps.
-To move apps to SD, if needed, to free space.
-To not have pixelated icons and images in apps - I think that this is probably due to the new resources layout - drawable-hdpi, mdpi etc.
- Lots more stuff that I can't remember...
BUT, I think we'll get 2.1 from SE before the custom bootloader/SPL is (nearly) bug-free, and can be flashed easily and safely. Hopefully, I'm wrong, and we'll have Froyo on our X10's by next week!
But the main problem I have, which is a bit off-topic, is that:
Will SE patch the root exploits when 2.1 is released, or even upgrade the bootloader, (or radio), without us knowing, to stop all progress completely - like Sony did, and still does, with the PSP?

Logical fallacy.
If a supposed 3.0 update contained "X", "Y" and "Z", but got changed to version 2.3 with "X", "Y", and "Z", the phone could theoretically run it because the version number is lower?
Think before you type. A larger number means absolutely nothing in terms of whether the phone could handle it.

Most likely yes.
And i find it normal as is a security flaw in the phone.
So, don't do any SEUS/OTA/Companion upgrades if you want to keep root.

i totally agree with you, but i've also seen some custom ones that work 100%, take the CM for example, i saw one myself that was very stable and working for normal daily use..

i think if we upgrade to 2.1, we will be able to Flash-Back to 1.6 with the tools present atm ?
note,
i aggregated the info you guys put in the 1# post so if any1 new to x10 or android sees the thread can understand a bit
i don't want it to be a poll-chitchat thread that have no point at all, that would be waste of space
