Magic with froyo 2.2? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

There were some rumors that some of the Android devices of HTC will not receive the newest update to Android Froyo 2.2. While this is partially true, we’re happy to say that HTC Magic is not included in that “black list”.
As announced by the second largest French mobile operator SFR, the device will receive the desired Froyo soon. Some believe that this will take place even in this month. T-Mobile has also plans to update myTouch 3 G which is basically the same device to Froyo by the end of this year.
Let’s say that the device looks to handle the novelties quite well, considering the fact “of not being that new”. Good job!

so correct me if im wrong... but if the htc magic gets official android 2.2 does that mean the amazing developers here are going to have a field day with it and make it even better and more customizable than the actual creators of it?
I sure hope so would love to have a nice custom rom with 2.2 that works and with tons of bonus stuff pre installed.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but the amazing developers here are having a field day since the froyo source was dropped in to AOSP a few days ago. CM6 should be just around the corner.

i know they are already playing with it, but with a copy from the actually phone i imagine it would be easier to mod and play with since they dont have to port and do all kinds of ridicules things to get it to work on another phone.

Remember that the 32B Magic is the ION/ADP2, everything you need to get a fully working ROM is supplied in the AOSP. What you're suggesting is probably more relevant to devices like the Hero. At any rate, we'll probably see CM6 or some other froyo ROM before a shipped one.

ok well you seem to know more than i do so i hope a 2.2 near perfect rom comes out soom. im so excited lol

Yeah me too, Cyan's feed is the only reason I'm checking twitter atm, really looking forward to speed increases

Donut/1.6 on HTC Hero

Hey Guys,
I was wondering that since Google is already sharing the Donut Love with G1's and Magic's when are we gonna see some Donut love for our lovely piece of Hardware we all know as HERO ...
I am guessing Htc is working on the 1.6 SDK provided by Google to integrate it with ROSIE, but i am thinking the Developers here are alot faster than the guys and HTC.
So can we get a Rosie with 1.6 which is rooted ofcourse but nothing else... no other modifications i mean.
Respect to all.

Good question, I would love to see that as well... BUT I suppose it is not possible without the kernel sourse, unless Sprint's Hero comes out with 1.6 and then its ROM is ported to our European Heros. That's up to the devs!
Well the Sprint Hero HAS to come with Donut... It's CDMA, and that's only supported in Donut, so I'm almost 100% positive it will ship with Donut.

That was what I thought. But Joshua @ Engadget told me that their Sprint Hero review unit only has Android 1.5 on it. Well, Android 1.6 added support for CDMA does not necessarily mean that one cannot write a driver for Android 1.5 to support CDMA.
But anyway, I do think that it is almost likely that HTC will release a 1.6 update for the Hero in a not too distance future.
The Google experience G1s and Magics are purely that - stock Cupcake ROMs. The Hero presents a slight challenge as HTC put a lot of love into the ROM, with the addition of SenseUI. Hopefully, it won't take that long to cook a Donut ROM with SenseUI, but just making the transition of the great innovations from HTC for the Hero will be the stumbling block for a Donut-based ROM.
HTC Response to my Donut question.
I asked when they'd release a ROM using Dognut ( 1.6 ) for the Hero.
Their reply:
Good Morning, HTC do not release the ROM updates. Google do. If you have any questions relating thier operating system, the updates, its benefits and release dates please visit www.android.com for further support. Here at HTC, we manufacture the hardware on the device and release hotfixes for when reported bugs needs resolution. If you have a technical support related query regarding the device, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Kind Regards, HTC Europe
This has constantly been my experience with HTC - ask them a question and they say contact Google.

Man thats so frustrating innit. I am sure if we ask google, they wont comment either coz our hero is not with "GOOGLE EXPERIENCE" ..... what a load of cr*p
well i actually snooped around and heard a couple of ppl say that it should not be a difficult task for HTC to induce Rosie into 1.6, infact one of them even said " should be a peice of cake" so i am a hopless optimist and hopefully it'll be sent as an OTA upgrade or " HOTFIX " by HTC soon...
I'll call HTC too and see if i can get any more info out
update
Just got off the phone with a customer support officer from HTC UK. And she said that while they dont have the exact date on when HTC will issue and update bundled with Donut, It is under works and will be sooner rather than later..... now the waiting games begin
correct me if I'm wrong, but 1.6 doesn't bring that much for us Hero owners right? When the first announcements came I looked through the "Whats new" list and I didn't start shouting from excitement

well the only notable improvement might be of the speed and performance, although google didn't shout about it so i m thinking it'll be minimalistic ... however detailed battery usage, universal search and test to speech are a few things i wouldn't mind having....
But actually for me its just about getting the latest updates on the Android flagship device...

One benefit will be being able to run any future apps that require 1.6 (use 1.6-specific API features). We already have apps that run only on 1.5 or higher...
system-wide search feature would be nice...
I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but I signed up to point it out:
http://www.htc.com/europe/product/tattoo/specification.html
http://developer.htc.com/htc_tattoo_developer.html
The Tattoo will be shipping with Android 1.6, and it uses the Sense UI. That should mean that it isn't too far off for the Hero.
Looks promising! and the Tatoo is Due to launch orange UK this month
VPN and Global search are the two main features I am most excited about in the Donut
It's supposed to be faster also.

Hero support? That's actually the bad thing about hero. We will have to check if HTC decides to upgrade to the new android, while with Magic it will keep being supported..

cuz HTC made their version of Android using SenseUI so its not directly supported by Google. HTC will have to cook us up and update, test sense and release
I wouldn't worry too much about Eclair just yet because:
a) The Eclair development SDK hasn't been released yet.
b) We don't even have Donut!
Of course, if Eclair does ship before year end, there is always a chance that HTC might decide so skip Donut entirely, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Dave
motorola are to start shippng phones running 2.0 from the beginning of november so htc may decide to skip donut.

1 thing to know btw.......
what exactly sense is? is it only the fancy thing with curve menu system and 7 home screens? or is it something integrated part of the android OS without which the OS cant even run?
i want to know this because for last 2 days i have been running without the sense home screen and it feels good with that simple and plain homescreen.
The Sens is the user interface that you c on your hero. i don't like the sens uit it slows down the phone. all the htc software for android are really really bad. i prefer the android plane OS.
HTC don't want to release the hero kernel, if they release it we will be able to install android OS without all the UI from htc.
you say you're running hero without sense home screen. you maybe don't see the home screen but it is still using your ram and running services on the background.
i'm looking forward to android 2.0 it looks great. and if you look @ www.droidoes.com you will see that verizon is gonna release their android 2.0 in november. but i still don't see any sdk for it what is weird :s.
the only thing we can do is to wait and see what happens next month

My guess is that the November date is just a date for a press conference or announcement of the phone, with the actual release date comes a month or two later. Besides the Android 2.0, it is nice to see that the hardware specification of smartphones is finally moving forward, i.e. manufacturers finally move to faster CPU, more memory, and bigger screen with higher resolution, rather than keep recycling the Qualcomm 528Mhz CPU and HVGA screen that powered to many devices over the last few years.
Is the locale language in menus, keyboards and dictionaries, a part of sence. Or would that be possible to have in a more native android version (like magic).
> I suppose it can be done. But i rather have 1.5 with sense than 1.6 / 2.0 without it.

Personally, I'm dying for 1.6 because I feel handicapped & shackled by the soft keyboard, and urgently need the Gesture support from 1.6 to do Graffiti-like handwriting recognition. If Gestures were implemented as a shared lib that could be installed to 1.5 in addition to being an inherent part of 1.6 I wouldn't mind as much, but as it stands with 1.5, text input is just painfully frustrating, and has really put me off from exploring things I'd otherwise be spending lots of time playing with. I shudder to even think about trying to launch a Perl or Python app from the shell one painfully-fighting-with-prediction-and-losing-badly letter at a time. Prediction and autocorrection might be tolerable for t3xt msg3z, but falls flat on its face and dies a horrible death when you're trying to type something in camelCase with inline.punctuation.

Why bother waiting for 2.1 ?

honestly with the work the dev's have been doin with the 2.1 ports i could care less about the official 2.1 now . do ya really have to wait another month or so just because it says "sprint" on it or would ya rather use all the amazing new features it has now.

Because the Sprint release will have all features working. After that, our dev's can make custom ROM's based on a fully working release, which of course, will be far superior...........

Why?? My wife's phone is stock and everything works perfectly.....Why should it be any different for 2.1?? They are waiting to release to be sure it works.
I'm a nascar fan and it doesn't work on Damage 1.0, but I don't really care at this point as my wifes is stock and we listen to that one....Everything I need works on Damage and I'm very happy with it, it is my daily.

My father's phone is bone-stock and mine is rooted, running the Beta DC 1.1... and I'd say my phone has less issues than he has.
I'm guessing you didn't get a Hero at launch... there were a few problems that needed addressing.
My thought on the sprint released one:
Hopefully it will run a little smoother than ours does now because things are done "Appropriately" and not hacked together(Kerenel and driver versions are appropriate). I could only imagine this would make things a little better. Then we can have our way with a new one.
My current impression of the 2.1 Roms I have loaded:
They are really good considering all that has to be done to make one work. It seems they are a little slow when you start switching between apps and somethings just act a little funny. Like my browser randomly closes back to the home screen after I click on a link. If I run one game and then move to another its laggy. But all of this stuff is still really great and the devs have done a great job with what is at their disposal. I have run a 2.1 daliy for about the last 2 weeks, and the benefits far out weigh going back to a 1.5. I wish I could get the latest PRL with out going through all the work.
DISCALIMER:
IMHO
Im sure an official 2.1 release will result in a 2.1 kitchen as well... thats something to look forward to!
The official Sprint/HTC 2.1 will just give the community more stuff to build upon and incorporate into current ROM's. Whether starting from source or hacking on a prebuilt or leaked ROM (or some combination of these), something tells me most of the folks on this list won't view ANY Android release as a finished product.
Honestly, if Sprint/HTC they were smart the fixes and extensions to Android found on this forum and elsewhere (example, the kernel optimizations, Cyanogen's updater, the "kitchen" model, themes and skins, etc) would be going the other way and finding themselves in the official releases. But I'm not holding my breath

I don't think anyone thinks it is the holy grail. People just want things like live wallpapers, accurate location, working bluetooth, working MMS/SMS/etc., working google voice, stability, and other admittedly minor issues that plague the 2.1 roms. It's not going to change anyone's life, but suddenly my latitude might stop showing I'm 30 miles away and I can finally have that cool spinning galaxy wallpaper.

We're glad that everything that you want works for you. But you must have realized at some point by now that we're not all you, and some of us care about those things that don't work.
Why you would whine and argue that we should just settle for a rom that has less things working and not look forward to a rom that has more things working is beyond me.

I am thinking that, the items that are still not working only affect a small percentage of us out there, and if a feature is broken, but you never use it, then why worry?
He has a point, not everyone is insanely OCD about all features working. Being OCD about isn't a bad thing either. XDA and Android itself is all about choices. He has made his, you have made yours. I don't even understand why there is so much discussion about this.

If sprint were smart they would sell this device unlocked with the ability to download customizations from their store (roms, taskbars, lockscreens, icons, customized rosies, bootscreens etc) for a few bucks a pop, and let everyone customize the phone to their liking. Would prob be tens of thousands of additional income for them from the people who are too lazy to root and do it themselves.

So you'd have to be "insanely OCD" to want all the features on your phone working? Why did they bother to creating the features in the first place?
I would also point out that I haven't seen anyone who is "insanely OCD" about the official 2.1 rom coming out either.

It would seem to me that you are very particular about having all features work on your phone. I can understand this, I even stated that in my post. Perhaps OCD was a bad way to put it. Rather lets call it Nitpicky. In either case, I think you've missed the point I was getting at in my post. That point was that we all have the freedom to choose how to use our phones. 2.1 will come from sprint in due course. Sprint has made no promises on a date for it yet people continue to act overly anxious regardless.
Out of curiosity, what feature(s) is missing from the current 2.1 builds that has you waiting for the official sprint release?
1. No more "beta" ROMs (i.e. all ROMs with some minor issues, each with different ones, less messing with wiping).
2. Less ROMs and just a few really good ones (like with 1.5) which would lead to many more custom themes, and not themes that will be outdated with the new beta releases.
P.S. After the month of 2.1, when people are on their "x 2.1 official ROM" and they've done their themes, the boards will slow down like hell and people will just work on themes. In fact if Sprint has their way, by the time you get "official" 2.1 with the theme you want, you will be moving on to the 4g phones. I really don't see these boards having so much action after all the final ROM releases are out and the major themes are out for them.
The only reason I want the official 2.1 to come is because currently the "hacked together (if you will)" 2.1 ROM's get horrible signal on my phone. If I run 1.5 in the same area, I usually always have about 10-15 less dBa (less is better) than a 2.1 ROM. So hopefully the Sprint 2.1-based ROM's will have this corrected... otherwise I might stick to 1.5 forever
Well for one everything would be working 100%. With no setbacks like the devs make taking out keyboards, sounds, etc etc just to make the rom faster and more stable
You would have all your sprint apps, all google apps along with htcs more widgets and Market will show (as u see in ads) the 30,000+ apps
But i dont think its worth the unroot and root again tho. ill just wait two days or maybe 15hours before a dev make they own version of the rom.

Best mod for htc dream?

A whole bunch of us have been working hard to get Android 2.1 (CM 5.0.7) running perfect on the HTC Dream and Magic phones and I think it’s nearly ready to go. This release is almost exactly the same as the Nexus One and Droid versions of CM now, minus a few of the heavier apps.
This was an incredible community effort and I hope everyone likes the result. Breathing new life into old hardware is always awesome.
I expect that a stable release of 5.0.7 should be ready for all devices in the next few days.
And after that.. Google has confirmed that Android 2.2 (FroYo) will be available for ION phones, so it’s guaranteed that CM-6 will continue to support the G1 also when the source code hits AOSP.
Cyanogen 5.0.7test7 runs pretty sweetly on my G1 and its based on 2.1
does it lag at all? are there any limitations that i should know of
I find it ok with comcache enabled, around the same speed (if not a little quicker) then the stable based on 1.6.
It is still a "test / experimental" build though, so proceed at your own risk etc...

Running the Rom on my signature which is CyanogenMod5, latest version themed and tweaked. It is a 2.1 and is running very fast/stable so far. Major downside is the battery life however and is a bit hard to get used to vs. a 1.6 Donut Rom.
In all honesty Id say you try SuperD v1.11 (Best Donut Rom in my opinion) first and then flash the Eclair Roms later on. Sooner or later I am sure a developer will improve the battery degradation problem on the 2.1's.

That statement is absurd. EVERYTHING has limited memory. Unlimited memory is by definition IMPOSSIBLE, even the smallest memory component possible would consume more than the total available space in the universe to produce unlimited/infinite memory. Do you realize that all the chicken littles in the world will always say "your old hardware will never see this!" -- fact is that this is NOT WINDOZE!! Just because windoze phones don't get to see the newer versions does NOT mean that WE won't get to see our newer versions.
**** this guy is annoying with this rooting ****...

Poll: CM6 or future 2.2 sense

Like many other peoples i started with stock(duh) moved to liberated and then to CM6. But today i did some researching and the new sense is pretty cool, hopefully will be added to liberated 2.2. My question is, will you guys be moving back to sense 2.2(hopefully with new sense) or staying with CM6?
I'll probably try Froyo Sense when it gets put in Liberated, but I'll probably stick with CM6 unless I'm completely blown away. I do miss parts of Sense though.
Yes. I know that people are quick to dismiss Sense but I like it a lot, especially after using Motorola phones, that are garbage.
I have used every ROM available for this phone and Froyo with HTC Sense would be perfect for me.
I keep going back and forth between CM6 and a ROM that I tinkered with that is like a hybrid. I really hope they have an official update soon or a ROM that combines everything.
Is that asking for too much?

Ditto.
Now to wait and see.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
I want froyo sense mmmmmm.
As long as CM upgrades to using the new kernel thats supposed to be released with Froyo I'll stay loyal to CM.
I'd rather have sense -
For me it will depend on if they add in extra features into the Sense that aren't likely to be added into CM.
CM has been a blessing for this little Aria phone, but I do miss Sense UI.
Does this mean htc's 2.2 for aria is around the corner?:

If given a choice, I'd definitely prefer 2.2 Sense!
I'd go with Sense as I like the UI and many of its widgets.
I enjoy some elements of Sense, as they're very carefully designed and work effectively. Conversely, I will only install a ROM if it's as open and customizable as CM6. Android is supposed to be about a more open system and I don't understand why these companies can't understand the needs of power users.
Sense 2.2
I hate to admit it but I miss the pretty. I also carry the iEvil and it's tough to pull out CM6 and not winch a little. For all the UI haters, there is a good reason big companies spend tons of money on the user experience. Functionality can be enhanced with a great UI.

*crosses fingers*
According to the specs I saw the HTC Bee has a different (inferior) CPU.
There should be enough guts in that ROM to strip out the hardware specific bits and put in Aria ones.
Attn1 -- looked at that yet? Prognosis?
How come non android native (IE:Hd2 ect ) can get froyo sense and we can't ? Not *****in because I can't make it , but someone can . Maybe a good write up on how to build a rom is in order .
I tried and liked the CM6 mod and everything that went with it, but as I dont have an iPod or anything, not having the radio to listen to is a dealbreaker for me.

I was posting that as a possible indication ours is soon to follow. That rom is for a CDMA phone...which means we can probably forget about porting that to the aria.
