Just as an FYI. I had to exchange my N1 with an unlocked bootloader. The phone sometimes would not boot. HTC said it's most likely a software issue and they sent me a new one, with a $529 hold om my credit card pending the return of my old one. I sent the old one back and HTC is issuing me the credit. I just wanted to let everyone know if you have an issue with your phone and have the unlocked bootloader, just send it in anyway and see what happens.
Probably a useless thread I know.
Good to know. I have heard of other people who were able to complete the exchange process regardless of the unlocked bootloader.
Has HTC credited you back the $529 yet?
As for the "sometimes not boot" issue, I had that on my old N1. I just cleaned the battery contacts and made sure it was in there securely and it would always boot after that.

I was going back and forth with HTC via email and they processed the credit back on Thursday. It did not clear yet, but they said it could take up to 72 hours.
Keep us updated.
I am in a tug of war battle with myself on whether or not to root my nexus.
Seeing all these exchanges, regardless of the unlocked bootloader, really makes me want to.
I also have a littttle bit of a purple tint. I am not sure if I should replace it or not...

No...but I have hot seen the credit yet, but HTC said it could take up to 72 business hours.
Got my full refund today. Didn't pay a dime.
thanks for your information!
Anytime..I'm not sure by unlocking the bootloader, what warranty it voids, but the fact that the HTC rep told me that my problem was my software, not my hardware leads me to believe that do not care either way.
No they do not charge for shipping. I just recently got mine back becuase dust formed in the top left hand of the screen and my 3.5mm jack broke. They email you a shipping label.
I sent it in friday afternoon and it was back on tuesday morning from NC -> texas. I think that is a pretty good turn around too.
The only reason I want to root is for the RAM. Will rooting really make my nexus faster?
Oh and BTW...if you send it back for any reason and they question the unlocked goodness, just tell them it came like that and you though because you bought an unlocked version, it supposed to look like that.
To make it simple... Theres a lot to gain, and nothing to loose

Hi!
I've received my new Nexus One today. I've unpacked it and have charged. Then I turned it on but instead of strting animation I've seen multicoloured pixels began to appear on the screen. Their brightness increased and amount of them increased until they completely filled the screen. As I see by reaction on the keys and usb-activity phone was normally loaded, but only multi-coloured pixels are visible on the screen.
WTF? What I should to do?
Ah this is a bit of a pain given your location, DOA for sure.
Who/where did you buy it from? I would be in contact with the straight away!
I've bought it on eBay, seller is American.
Was it a reseller company or an individual? Many of the reseller companies have doa return policies.
Also if you paid through paypal you can file a grievance through them.
Ebay? You're boned.
Credit card payment I presume?
I don't know how credit cards work in russia, but hopefully they protect you from crap like this. I would get in contact with them.
Looks like individual reseller but with 100% positive feedbacks.
Is it possible to update phone' software without looking?
In theory, yes.
Realistically, no.

Well I believe the warranty on the phone might not be voided yet. contact the seller, and inform his ass the phone is not working. Then contact google, is the bootloader is still locked you might be able to get another device.
Okay, I've used eBay for quite some time. So heres what you should do:
File a claim on papal as soon as possible and describe your problem there. Contact the seller as well. And if at any time he does bot seem to want to help, papal should provide you with your buyers protection and refund you the money and or get in contact with your credit card company or bank account and file a chargeback to get your money back.

Thank you very much. I will try to talk with the seller.

That's absolutely not true! The warranty with HTC is valid for 12 months regardless of whether you're the original buyer of the phone or not! I bought my G1 secondhand on eBay... it had a dead pixel and HTC took care of it for me. Only had to pay shipping one way.
It absolutely IS true, and is the first point in the Nexus One warranty statement:

I stand corrected. I'm surprised to see that...wonder if the G1 warranty was also non-transferable. I would still call HTC... I'm betting they'll cover it. All they ever ask for over the phone is the IMEI number. I've never been asked for POP.
Hello. I made a video with this problem.
###.youtube.com/watch?v=lgNhBSvABTY
Lmao, nice bootanimation!
No really, that sucks. Try to send it to HTC
Yup screen took a hit, reloading firmware will not fix this. Send it in to HTC.
Hello. I just wanted to get some insight on some people who have successfully SWAPPED their phone with an unlocked bootloader because of a manufacturing defect.
My phone originally did not have dust under the screen and I unlocked it. Within 2 weeks it accumulated a TON of dust, called HTC, let them know I was unlocked with dust under the screen, and got my swap going. That was 3-4 weeks ago. I have my new phone (unlocked, however the bottom casing has a sliver of plastic chipped off and the screen isn't flush).
Today I got an email saying my estimated repair bill was $196.00 else I had to pay a triage fee to get my old phone back ( I'm not sure if they will charge the $560.00 for the swap phone as well.) I called and talked to a rep. All he said was that my MB needed to be replaced and shouldn't be charged. He issued and escalation and hopefully I can have this taken care of soon.
If anyone else has had a similar experience, or like stated, SWAPPED an unlocked phone no problem, please let me know how and if you had to ream HTC untill you got what you needed.
PS. My philosophy is if I brick a phone, tough ****. Its my fault. However manufacturing defects as such I have had are unacceptable on a nearly $600.00 unsubsidized phone. I wouldn't mind paying 30-40$ even. But 200 is just outrageous.
Thanks everyone.
Hitorii
LOL, it seems like HTC is saying peoples MB are broken a lot lately.
I had mine swapped and they didn't mention it at all, most likely because I didn't mention it.

my thoughts exactly... i wonder if they are doing this strictly to people that have unlocked bootloader...
Just a heads up. I PM'ed swetland and he forwarded my message to google's side of HTC and Nexus one, perhaps this will help my cause.
Worst case scenario I'd like my old phone back and pay the 28$ triage fee and send back the one the Swapped phone ( as not to be charged the $560 for the POS scratched up phone they sent me as a "swap"). That's not unreasonable, is it?
Hopefully though someone will get back to me and let me know whats up and see to get it fixed. As a note, my current Nexus One is not unlocked.
Keep the comments rolling. I'd really like tips to deal with customer service, and it's better to have real world proof of someone actually doing this as it set the precedent. Ay?

Ouch. Mine doesn't even say MB or anything, just a $196.00 USD repair charge. No charge for labor or delivery... I really want this to get fixed today.
I'm in a similar situation now too. I mentioned I was rooted so I couldn't do the swap to begin with. I sent it in for repair and got the $196 price quote too. They wanted to replace a whole motherboard for a dead pixel.
I also escalated on wednesday and today they are being very stern about it not being under warranty.
I did find out that they are wanting to replace motherboards on rooted phones automatically. This is supposed to reinstate your warranty but also have you on a locked bootloader once again.

yes i guess this should be updated on the "relock your bootloader" thread.
so far the only way to relock your bootloader is to mail your phone into htc repair and have them rape you for $196 lol

Not yet I had to escalate my ticket again just to get a price quote on how much it'll be to fix the dead pixel itself (not replacing the whole motherboard).
I have a thread started with my whole story and updates here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644838
They are being super stern about having an unlocked bootloader and voided warranty no matter what I say. So it looks like I'll have to pay one way or the other.
As a last glimmer of hope I messaged swetland as well to see if he'd be able to help any.
P.S. I thought about doing a swap without telling them I was rooted but I was afraid they would later charge me $196 for MB replacement + $530 for new phone.
It doesn't seem like HTC asks you over the phone. Do they just get the phone and then charge you if it is an unlocked bootloader?
My phone isn't rooted, but I was asked if I'd rooted it in one of my two warranty swaps.
I'm in the process of doing that now. My rooted phone has been with HTC for a few days and I have not heard anything yet. I'll update when or if I do.
many people on these forumns have without issue.
they charged my $55 for a replacement because of my unlocked b/l.. good for the pople who got away with it though

nope. i got my inquiry a couple days after i sent it in and it said that my cost was $55. i called them and they said it was "something i did". but the only thing i would have done was unlock the bootloader. i hadnt dropped it or scratched... basically brand new. so.. much luck you. hopefully you dont get flamed for trying to rip HTC off, like me in the other thread i started haha

I'm sending mine next week just for the dust under the screen problem. why are you guys sending yours?
Because of my atrocious battery. Although, they offered to send a free battery if I thought mine was bad.
Has anyone returned it for a full refund (or minus $55) with an unlocked boot loader? I wouldn't mind doing that and picking up the Milestone instead.

First (new) phone had a problem with the g sensor and an ill-fitting bottom plastic bit.
Second (first swap) phone had a blue tint to the screen, and a very noticeable blue tint in the bottom fourth or fifth of the screen. Also a dead pixel.
Third (second swap) phone has a much better screen, but still a bit of noticeable blue tint along the bottom edge. Also, the horizontal g sensor is off by quite a bit, and it has the same ill-fitting bottom plastic issue the first had, only much less annoying than the first.
I'm calling tomorrow to do a third swap, hoping this one won't have any issues. If it does, I'll keep whichever is better, and wait a few months before doing another swap. Maybe some of the later AT&T batches won't have the same kinds of problems.
Even with all that, this is the best phone I've ever had. I'm just being super picky after forking over $530. The swaps have been easy; I get a new one overnighted and then send the old one back in the same box with a fedex label htc provides. I have zero complaints about the service, I just wish I'd gotten a perfect phone in the beginning. =)

Hmmm.. I'm having trouble with my N1 as well, but I'm reluctant to send it in in fear that they'll charge 55 dollars over the unlocked bootloader just to repair just the power button.
:\
Thought I would share my experiences with you guys to hopefully settle some stomachs.
I got my first incredible the day they were released. About a month after i got it, it started randomly rebooting and shutting off. It would run great for days, then have a fit of reboots. I used it like that for quite a while until root was released. I rooted it, then shortly after installed some of the leaked roms. I hoped that updating everything would help with the reboots.. nope.
Anyway, long story short. I called VZW and they sent me a replacement device. I sent back the first phone with S-off, rooted, radio updated, and running a cryogen mod.
As soon as I got the replacement phone, I re-flashed it with all the goodies. Last week I ended up bricking it because my kid ran by and pulled it off the USB cable during a flash of sky raider. It would boot into Hboot, but i nothing i did made it work right again. Anyway, I called that day and said "my phone doesnt turn on anymore" they sent me another replacement. I sent that phone back with s-off and radio 2.15 and not booting past the silver HTC screen.
I was wondering wtf, i thought for sure i would get a call or a letter or SOMETHING. i have a buddy that works at the VZW warehouse so I asked him. He said all they do is open the box, verify that the numbers on the phone match the numbers on the return order and move on. They get 1,000s of phones a day from warranty exchange. Nobody "checks them". Hes just a lowly worker but I think hes right.
I have had VZW for just over 10 years now, and have utilized their "exchange 3 times per year" service on almost every phone I have had. I have sent in phones that I broke the screens on, by saying "my phone doesn't work anymore". I have sent in phones i dropped in the water by saying "my phone doesn't work anymore".
The people in the warehouse who check the phones numbers have NO IDEA why you sent it in, or what the tech told you, or why they told you to take it back.
bottom line.. don't stress about it. and take advantage of VZW's service of letting you exchange your phone 3 times per year.
EDIT
Just wanted to add... They give you 10 days to send the phone back, that first incredible i sent back, i kept for over a month. They even posted an equipment charge to my account for not sending it back, but that took them a month. I just called 611 and said "oh gee wow.. i forgot to send that back" lady told me no problem and sent me out a new box and i mailed it back. 3 days later they credited my account the $500+ equipment charge. That was the phone with s-off, radio update, and running cryogen. Hardly stock lol. and honestly.. it was a intermittent reboot problem. what would they do anyway? turn it on and use it for a week to see when it shutdown? lol
That 3x a year deal, is that with one of their insurance plans? I elected to for-go that when I bought my Incredible so I don't know what the deal will be if any one of my phones boink... just glad I don't have a kid to fudge things up anyway... although I do have a girlfriend that likes to seemingly randomly unplug my electronics because "our power bill is sooo high!". Yes, I know honey, it's called summer + A/C usage x.x

It's how I got my Incredible. Upgraded for free from D Eris. I got a big scratch on my screen somehow. Need a refurb soon. Haha.
I'm not sure if the masses should know any of this.
This is exactly how I got the Incredible from the Moto Droid. 3 times returned (the 3rd time not even for an unfixable problem *oopsie* ) and then they said they would send me an Incredible. I love VZW tech support
Hmmm, that Droid incredible hd sounds pretty cool lol when's it coming out again? Jk jk lol

Yeah, I'm sure this all-important xda thread would be the first inkling VZW has ever had that some people game their replacement policy (sshhh!)
better shut it down RIGHT AWAY before the sky falls on us.
I guess there always has to be someone to make a wise guy remark. You are correct about 'not being the first'. However, XDA may be the first that hundreds of thousands of people look at.
If it's so easy to return a phone 3x a year why bother with insurance? I'm paying $8 a month to Asurion.
Why would this thread need to be deleted. If Verizon does crack down good. People with legit problems with then hopefully be helped even better.

1 in 4 people with 2 year contracts could make a full replacement purchase price claim and they'd still have a nice profit, assuming they had to pay full price MSRP for replacements. Wonder how much they'd make by using refurbs as replacements, rejecting claims, etc.
I may be in the wrong business.
Also, delete the thread. That is the best way to restrict information flow.

actually its not 3x a year its 3x in a period of thirty or sixty days.
that's how i got my dare from a Venus. The Venus always had something wrong and the tech himself told me well if they replace 3 in a month then you can get another phone.

Just like there always has to be a Chicken Little or three, I guess. Would you rather I put a broomstick up my ass and found some piously earnest way to express my sincere contempt for those who run around asking for this thread deleted, that information suppressed, mods help us! etc, just to save us from ourselves? OK, then:
Attempting to mold community behavior by restricting the flow of information is a really dumb idea, especially on a hacker forum. And preserving a loophole that lets a knowledgeable few commit warranty fraud by concealing the means & opportunity from the other "hundreds of thousands of people" who read XDA is elitist, self-serving, and morally reprehensible all at once.
Fortunately for the scruple-challenged, my sense is that VZW is well aware of the potential, but just doesn't care--or at least is unwilling to invest in the kind of training and verification overhead that would allow them to examine each claim for legitimacy. So by all means: keep returning those bricked phones for an upgrade, but do stop hiding the Machiavellian ingenuity of your methods under a bushel--let it shine forth unto the ends of the earth! Free replacement phones for all!

Well, I suppose it's terribly old-fashioned to suggest that your conscience might trouble you if you went that route... But ethics aside, if you lost the phone outright, or smashed it to tiny bits, you could still need that insurance. The VZW workers might be inattentive and uncaring, but I'm guessing even they might notice an empty box, or a phone that arrives in a sandwich bag with no one fragment larger than 30 mesh!
Hey guys, help a noob out? I bought a Nexus 4 from craigslist for $650 because my order is in limbo level 3 right now. The phone was brand new, nothing was opened as far as I can tell. So after using it for a few hours I noticed the yellowish tint so many of you mentioned on here and now the phone won't even turn on. I called Google and they said they cannot honor the warranty since I didn't originally purchase it from the Google Play store and I should take it back to the person who sold it to me? Seriously, take it back to the craigslist guy? To my understanding when you purchase a product the remaining manufacturer's warranty transfers over to the person who bought it? Google has been such an arse about this whole Nexus 4 thing, I'm seriously considering sticking with Apple, smh! Any suggestions?

Good lesson in life either way though about having a little patience.. Sorry friend. I hope it works out for you..

I tried to be patient, it was an impulse buy. I figured I'd make the money back by selling this one when my back ordered nexus comes in.
I tried to get in touch with this guy but he's not responding. He probably knew about the issue or no longer cares now that he has his money. I have the receipt that proves he bought it from the play store. But the problem is how do I get someone I can't contact to transfer the warranty over? I'm seriously considering calling google under the false pretense that I'm this guy and I want to transfer my warranty :/

I would call LG. Google may not do anything, but LG prolly will. Its thier warranty. Not Googlies.\
I don't get why you couldn't wait to own it. Its a cool phone. but really. Not worth 650.

Yeah I called them and they agreed to replace /service it. While that's good news, there is no express replacement service so I'll have to send the phone in and wait for them to mail out another one. It's e waiting game that I can't play
Im sure you could have made this Post without stating the price you bought it for.....now everyone has a reason to make fun of you...

Well thats a personal issue. You chose to buy from a (IMO) horrible place (Craigs list) and now you get what that comes with. Horrible service.
Me, I'd just be glad 650 is not out the window.

LOL and here I thought I'd get more sympathy for a more emphatic loss

You'll be better off then limbo level. I am sure they have a service center in the states, and I bet they attempt to connect to it, Won't be able, stick it in the parts bin and then send you off a referb.
You at least "know" what is happening. Some them limbo's are clueless on what is happening.
I find this amusing. First AFAIK Google does not transfer warranties. In fact if you lookup the terms and conditions, you must have and "Maintain" a Google wallet account to get Google warranty. That said, when they sold out in 20 minutes, I looked on Ebay and there was a listing where in big bold red letters stated Google has a no questions asked warranty. I thought it was a horrible misrepresentation. ANyway...Good luck.

Why anyone buys anything that might need a warranty from craigslist is a mystery to me.
Beating this to death....
But you seriously paid $650 for a $350 phone because you couldn't wait a little longer? Some people make ridiculous financial decisions.

You planned to make $650 back? Where are you located that they're going for $650? A 16GB in Chicago is hardly fetching $495 on CL.

I just bought mine off of Fleabay for $449.99 including shipping. I figured it was worth the extra $63.09 to get it a month and a half sooner.

Hi there, I found your post on xda-developers forum and as I have the same issue - bought expensive phone from Kijiji and now have a brick, I want to see how to go about it. Google said they will 'transfer warranty' but then days later they said it was an error. LG is saying to call Google and are quite rude about it. The phone was new from never opened box bought in February?
How did you do? Did you get a repaired or a new phone? And do you have any advice in dealing with LG?
Thanks,
Bianca (I am in Toronto, Canada)
