How to flash rom, keeping apps installed to sd intact - Hero CDMA General

I cannot find a definitive guide/how to on how to keep from installing all my apps after I flash a new rom. Anyone have a simple way of doing it?

+1 me too!

Simple way = Titanium Backup. The paid version retains the links to market, the free version does not.

Simple answer is...
Don't wipe ext partition and make sure your new rom supports a2sd. (And do NOT clutter up any threads asking "does this support a2sd? The answer is yes. They pretty much all do now. Stop being such a noob and do a little reading, would ya?)
Long answer is that the short answer will "usually" work, but there are going to be times when you just need to wipe everything....

If you retain apps on your ext partition make sure you run "fix UID mismatches" under the "other" menu in recovery.

Not always necessary, but still a good thing to try before proceeding with a full wipe. (And always worth giving a shot. It can't actually "hurt" anything. Worst case scenario is it leaves you exactly like you were.)

Apps

Ok. So I fixed my phone thanks to you guys. But now, after I downloaded a few apps, nothing is Installing onto my phone. Does anybody have any idea what's wrong with my phone? And I have Cyanogen, if I updated it, will it fix it?
You are just full of questions, aren't you. Well of course they are not installing to your phone if you are using a ext partion and apps2sd, then they install on, say it with me.....your sd card.
Sorry I am a little sarcistic when I just wake up

Can you explain? They were installing at first but now they won't.
I was being a smartass since you said........oh nevermind..... so when you say they don't install, give more info, is it.a problem parsing the package, are they downloading? If they are not d/l than log out of gtalk and sign back in, that seems to be the common answer for that or just reboot your phone

Your making me feel bad!! =( Lol. It just says Installation Unsuccessful.
Is it possible than your ext partion corrupted somehow, you could always try a wipe and a reflash of your rom or repartion your sd, honestly I never had this issue and hence not sure of a possible card and have not seen any posts of anyone else to give me any plausible ideas
LOL this thread is funny but anyway have you tried using cyanogen post about Market download freeze? I think that's what you are talking about
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=539780
hope it helps!
I thought that was what he was talking about at first but after reading cyanogen thread, the problem in the thread is when the download is not downloading it just hangs when it goes to download unlike the op's problem where they are not installing
Sounds like a faulty sd card. Could need to be repartitioned or simply wipe your ext2/3, someone here give this kind man the commands to do so in recovery.

Won't work.
What do you mean won't work? What happened when you typed it in? If you got a error then A) You mistyped or B) Your card wasn't properly partitioned before.
Honestly bud you seem to not totally grasp alot of this which is fine because it is alot to learn but you may need to just wipe your rom and format your card then repartition it double checking everything, and type print after you do the 2 partitions it will show you how many partitions you have.
Aren't these threads the greatest. Hey it won't work or what's wrong with my phone? People need to give the most details they can and what they have tried to do to resolve the issue.

You're not supposed to use any other apps2sd with cyanogenmod, it says that plainly in the instructions.
I think the easiest thing is to wipe and reflash.

You need to wipe your ext partition now. Search this forum for the instructions. Then you need to go back to the CyanogenMod thread and memorize all the warnings he has posted.
You better start reading carefully before you brick your phone. There are multiple warnings saying DO NOT USE ANY OTHER APPS2SD METHOD. Just about all roms now are auto when it comes to apps2sd.

i searched for "wipe ext partition" and cant find anything. can you point me in the right direction?
and thank you guys so much
go into parted from the recovery console.
use "print" to show your partitions, write down the start and stop locations
use "rm 2" replacing my 2 with your ext partition number but most likely it's 2 anyways
then remake the partition using the start and stop locations from the "print" results.
type "quit" or "exit" (i forget which one.
now type "upgrade_fs"
now type reboot recovery and reflash the rom
mmmmmmmmm yummy, a big ol' bowel of booty loops, the prize in the box is an android
thanks guys! with your help she is up and running
but one more question. since i have the new cyan build and you guys say apps2sd is built in how do i activate it? i have an icon at the top saying memory is low.

All you need in order to get the apps to automatically be moved to the SD card, is to have an existing ext3 partition.
As someone said earlier, use Cyan's recovery (which hopefully you flashed to, right?) and use the Parted application to create an ext2 partition. You will then go back to the normal recovery console and run the script "upgrade_fs", which will upgrade the filesystem from ext2 to ext3.

how do you update the radio rom??

Hi Folks.
Just been issued heros at work and wish to update the radio rom...How is this accomplished??
regards
Lohtse
Firstly it needs to have a recovery image installed I recommend Amon-Ra v 1.6.2.
Secondly you need to find the radio rom you wish to flash and put it onto the root of you phones sd card.
Thirdly enter the recovery image you have installed by holding power and home button from the phone being off.
Then select the radio.zip to flash.
Everything I have said here can easily be found how to do via searching this forum or its wiki.
also www.theunlockr.com will help with installing the recovery image.

First you will need to install the custom recovery console if you haven't done so already.
Then download your updated radio, put it on your SD, load into the recovery, then apply update. DONE!
If that is too brief,... let me know,...
EDIT... Ooops,... too late.
way to complicated...
Too much to do and can screw up..... At least with winmo and symbian was a few clicks...
hmmmmm think will ditch android.....
really? its not complicated at all when you know what your doing. In fact I can say its a damn sight easier (and safer) than modifying blackberry roms and from what I hear also Windows Mobile.

I came from wimo to android, and as it is said, it's quite hard to catch the thing at the beginning, but after everything seems easier than in wimo !! and more reliable... you have almost no chance to brick your hero after you installed the recovery boot.
radio : boot in recovery then select the good option.
rom : nandroid backup / install whatever rom you want / if you don't like it go for nandroid restore ( all you need is two Sd card.. the good one and the one for the "tests" ).... etc....
But at the beginning i was totally out but with a little time.. reading some posts (here and on the web) ... one day everything was more clear !

Its not hard at all. You can have the recovery installed and the radio updated in 5 minutes.
For step by step instructions follow the "Installing a recovery image" section in BTDAG's guide linked in my signature.
Then further down the same post, in the second yellow box there are instructions on "Updating your Radio".
Guys, the OP said he was issued the Hero at work, then two hours later said he was going to ditch Android... so what then, he's quitting his job? Troll alert. Don't feed the troll.
As to troll comment(yes offence has been caused)....hmmmmm.... Am going back to the trusty Kaiser... WE DON'T HAVE TO USE THE HERO.... We live in free(ish) world.. And the Phones are issued as an update to our old duty phones... Also I'm not the only one who uses them that feels the same.
Now to updating being easy. Gulp I must be eeer dum!!! Du hu Du HU must be the TROLL in me!
I have tried to install recovery image thing and well just cant get it to work... And now I find I have to root the hero too so things will install to sd card!!!! WTF this should all be standard like winmo and symbian etc...
I have been using smart phones since the Ericsson r380 and so far Android has failed to impress to the degree I am beginning to hate it....
Am far to used to having simply andfull access to everything..
Android is a HUGE learning curve that I suspect I may not have the patience for..

Wahey!!!! Good job man.
Ok,... So now you have the recovery image all you need to do is pick a custom ROM. Personally, I highly recommend MCR3.2 (link in signature at botom). It is an Android 1.5 ROM but is stable and fast, what more could you want for a work phone. This ROM is rooted and has apps2SD enabled. Once you have installed the ROM you will need to remember to create an ext2 partition on the SD card (easily done through the recovery). Then you are set to go!!!!

You need to create an ext2 partition on your SD card through the recovery again. I cant remember the exact wording but something like "create ext2 + fat" or something along those lines.
As far as I know, once that has been done all apps will install to SD.
Someone with more knowhow than me correct me if I am wrong?... CAULI?,... LENNY?
Can someone who knows please answer this question:
Are you 100% sure that flashing the Radio ROM does not affect the phone RF Calibration ?
Thanks!

Yup, certainly as far as MCR is concerned. On the first reboot it will move all files from /data/app to /system/sd/app (& similarly for app-private) Nb /sysytem/sd is the mount point for the ext2 partition. All it does is move the files over & then replaces the /data/app (& app-private) directory with a symlink to the new location. That way future installs, updates etc all automatically go to the new location.
You can always check yourself with a terminal emulator & the command ls -l, or using a file manager like Root Explorer, if you're curious. Some people think it's not working because they see available space in internal flash drop as apps are installed, but that's because app data & the dalvik cache remain on internal flash, principally aiui for reasons of access speed. The saving you make just from shifting the apks to sd is more than enough for most people it seems.

A set of tables usually stored in NVRAM that takes into account the slight differences in the components used to build your phone. Every single phone is calibrated during manufacturing.
If the calibration is erased, it will look like it works but you can have all sort of problems from poor battery life to random drop from the network or poor sensibility (not to mention the higher than expected radio levels you could be emitting right next to your brain )

[Q] CWM v3

Ive seen many questions in the Q & A forum about this CWM and figured the best way is to get developers and other main contributors to look at the issues some of the "little people" have about using it. DAF was convenient and easy for all because it was one click for the people who could get that far, and since CWM, there where the 3 versions and this one has yet to really be well touched upon as a full tutorial with the copy to SD not being needed any more. I feel as do many others that a main "sticky" thread be made for it with a few FAQ on this section of the forum so they do not have to search too far away from the main thread they are using and get completely confused.
1. Will doing a backup and changing ROMs using CWM with different partition delete my backup?
2. Will doing a backup KEEP my partition?
3. Is it possible to do a partition from CWM or is the partition need to be carried on a computer?
(this to me seemed to defeat the purpose of CWM with some DEVs making their own partition layouts and not using the main ones that were originally laid out for use, no aim towards DEVs because I know they work hard)
4. If I put multiple ROMs on my SD card do I need to change the partition every time if I want to change them?
5. Is there a way to know which backups are from which ROMs I had used?
(I guess this is asking if they can change the name?)
6. How do I know when to "Wipe Cache Partition"?
I know there is *THIS* thread, however there are surely some differences between the copy of those files and not needing to copy amongst other things to which the "new" people do not understand.
If this is just a bother and hindrance to you all, I understand the deletion of this thread, however it did take quite a while to plan out what to write, and what not to should you choose to do so and I would give the answers, however even I do not know all of them and so I leave this to you all for debate. NO PUBLIC BASHING PLEASE

I said it could be moved or deleted just the questions are not very well maintained in that DEDICATED (? HA) forum there are multiple posts of the same and I felt that since there is a sticky thread here that could answer the forum issue of the DEVELOPED CWM program this should be brought to the attention and as such is a DEV related issue. It can and most likely will be moved, do you have an answer to any of the issues the people asked?

This I am not really sure of as I am not a dev but I think it does as the backup is just a backup of your settings, personal information, your gmail account associated with your Android, boot data, and any cache data that you have built up.

You can partition your SD card with CWM but I do not think you can do a system portion as CWM is what creats the system portion when you flash it. It creates a partition in the CWM.

Once again I am not a dev (yet) and I am not 100% sure of this. But I would say if the ROMs you have stored on SD card need different portition sizes then yes you will need to change the partition size when you change ROMs. If they require the same partition size then no you do not need to change the partition size.

You should be able to manually go into your SD card with a computer and change the name on the backup file, but I do not know if this will interfer with CWM being able to detect the backup file. So you might want to write down the original full name of the file befor you change it.

[Q] Frustrated NOOB needs a little help installing rom

After several days struggle, I'm burned out. Some of the threads here have 100+ pages, and searches yield too much outdated, irrelevant info. So, I'm asking for some direction (as simple as possible, please).
I'm trying to set up my unlocked HD2 (originally T-Mo, but unlocked and using AT&T) for dual-boot, WM6.5 and Android. As you know, the choices for android rom are mind-boggling. I don't need anything fancy, just something up-to-date and stable. I would like, however, something LOUD.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Using despy1989's March 2010 guide (four years old already!), I have my HD2 booting up asking to choose Android or WM. If I choose Android, it does nothing, and defaults to WM.
I have SUNDAWG-CM7-NATIVESD rom loaded (or I think I do) in the android directory of the SD card. I'm not sure this one will meet my LOUD requirement, but since it won't load, I can't tell.
If I tap the new Android icon, it does nothing. If I tap the Android SoftReset icon, it resets but does not load Android, goes to WinMo.
If I go to File Explorer, and run haret, I get the message "failed to load file \storagecard\android\sdcard\nativesd\zimage"
What do I do next?
ANY help is much appreciated.
How did you installed Android as NativeSD? Did you made a partition on your SD in EXT4 which is needed for installing the Rom? Why you want keep WM 6.5 anyway?

AFAIK, yes it is installed as NativeSD, Did not make a partition (there was conflicting advice as to whether it was necessary. I'm not ready to go "all in" and reformat my old SD card yet.)
Want to keep WM6.5 since it is the only one that works the way I need. I've been playing with a Sony X10a with Android 1.6 and am frustrated. I specifically need LOUDNESS and customizable ringtones and notifications, and relatively easy syncing with my PC.
Thanks for your reply and any further advice.
If you do not make a partition EXT4 it will never be installed so you just messing around that is why is not working. From WM6.5 can be run only SD Android version or there is another way, much longer but it's the way how it have to be.
Install MAGLRD and Recovery, probably this will wipe the phone, make the partition on SD to Install NativeSD, Install the Rom as Native SD. Then flash back the Stock WM6.5, this will wipe MAGLRD and Recovery. Now start again Android from the folder created from the installation. It should boot.

I did this 100 times and HD2 is not that easy to brick, I never heard about bricked HD2 before. Then if you don't want to do it you will never have NativeSD on your phone because the NativeSD have to be installed on EXT4 partition, there is no other way. The only Android which you can use is from this section HERE. Put it on SD with other stuff and run with the application from WM6.5. First boot is very long.

No, wipe (task29) won't even touch SPL parts.
So, unless you're super duper unlucky using wipe command, you won't bricking your device.
I don't know if you're already flash HSPL.
I suggest you to flash HSPL first, then the rest is up to you..

(this is the very kind of frustrations I'm having - there does not appear to be one single step-by-step guide without numerous links to invalid or outdated sites. I don't need advertising either.)
I can't find the 4EXT partition (in W8.1) in order to install anything.
So, now what?
