Apps - G1 General

Ok. So I fixed my phone thanks to you guys. But now, after I downloaded a few apps, nothing is Installing onto my phone. Does anybody have any idea what's wrong with my phone? And I have Cyanogen, if I updated it, will it fix it?

You are just full of questions, aren't you. Well of course they are not installing to your phone if you are using a ext partion and apps2sd, then they install on, say it with me.....your sd card.
Sorry I am a little sarcistic when I just wake up

Hahaha... lol... I don't get it.
Can you explain? They were installing at first but now they won't.

I was being a smartass since you said........oh nevermind..... so when you say they don't install, give more info, is it.a problem parsing the package, are they downloading? If they are not d/l than log out of gtalk and sign back in, that seems to be the common answer for that or just reboot your phone

Well, they Download, but they don't Install.

Hmmm...... what's it say after they download, does your phone say uninstall failed, or you just can't find them in your system? What exactly is it doing

Your making me feel bad!! =( Lol. It just says Installation Unsuccessful.

Is it possible than your ext partion corrupted somehow, you could always try a wipe and a reflash of your rom or repartion your sd, honestly I never had this issue and hence not sure of a possible card and have not seen any posts of anyone else to give me any plausible ideas

LOL this thread is funny but anyway have you tried using cyanogen post about Market download freeze? I think that's what you are talking about
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=539780
hope it helps!

I thought that was what he was talking about at first but after reading cyanogen thread, the problem in the thread is when the download is not downloading it just hangs when it goes to download unlike the op's problem where they are not installing

Sounds like a faulty sd card. Could need to be repartitioned or simply wipe your ext2/3, someone here give this kind man the commands to do so in recovery.

Won't work.

What do you mean won't work? What happened when you typed it in? If you got a error then A) You mistyped or B) Your card wasn't properly partitioned before.
Honestly bud you seem to not totally grasp alot of this which is fine because it is alot to learn but you may need to just wipe your rom and format your card then repartition it double checking everything, and type print after you do the 2 partitions it will show you how many partitions you have.

Aren't these threads the greatest. Hey it won't work or what's wrong with my phone? People need to give the most details they can and what they have tried to do to resolve the issue.

You're not supposed to use any other apps2sd with cyanogenmod, it says that plainly in the instructions.
I think the easiest thing is to wipe and reflash.

i went to the menu that says restore to factory / wipe and its still not booting. what exactly do i need to do / download. thanks. (sorry for bein dumb)
You need to wipe your ext partition now. Search this forum for the instructions. Then you need to go back to the CyanogenMod thread and memorize all the warnings he has posted.
You better start reading carefully before you brick your phone. There are multiple warnings saying DO NOT USE ANY OTHER APPS2SD METHOD. Just about all roms now are auto when it comes to apps2sd.
i wiped the phone and took out the sd and it still doesnt boot. do i need to root agian? ughhhh

i searched for "wipe ext partition" and cant find anything. can you point me in the right direction?
and thank you guys so much
go into parted from the recovery console.
use "print" to show your partitions, write down the start and stop locations
use "rm 2" replacing my 2 with your ext partition number but most likely it's 2 anyways
then remake the partition using the start and stop locations from the "print" results.
type "quit" or "exit" (i forget which one.
now type "upgrade_fs"
now type reboot recovery and reflash the rom
mmmmmmmmm yummy, a big ol' bowel of booty loops, the prize in the box is an android
thanks guys! with your help she is up and running
but one more question. since i have the new cyan build and you guys say apps2sd is built in how do i activate it? i have an icon at the top saying memory is low.
last question i promise thank you!!!!

All you need in order to get the apps to automatically be moved to the SD card, is to have an existing ext3 partition.
As someone said earlier, use Cyan's recovery (which hopefully you flashed to, right?) and use the Parted application to create an ext2 partition. You will then go back to the normal recovery console and run the script "upgrade_fs", which will upgrade the filesystem from ext2 to ext3.

Getting Apps2sd to work...

First off, sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong spot. Now,I've just sucessfully rooted my Hero and flashed using the Fresh 1.1 ROM.Basically the main reason is to be able to install to the sdcard.I've tried just about everything I can think of to get this to work using what I've read on here among other resources online but am still coming up with the 'Ooops! Looks like you...' error,so I went to the thread shown on the error and attempted to do that.I've tried it having my sd partitioned in RA and without.I believe I'm doing the right steps but obviously not in the right order.I have the init.rc and a2sd.sh on the sd's root and have tried the commands using the terminal, everything looks good but when I go back into the app2sd I get the same error .I know I'm probably doing something stupid being this is the first time I've done this but its been bugging the hell out of me.so I just pretty much just need to know the order of things from after I flash the Rom to getting to the app to enter the partition size.also, the app itself,am I supposed to be installing it manually?, like I've been doing or is there something else because I've read on the Fresh 1.1 thread it comes with it and is supported.Any info that might help is greatly appreciated, thanks for your time.

First - Someone is going to ding you on this post with a "Search First"
Second Fresh 1.1 does apps2sd auto-magically all you have to do is format the SD card with an ext partition in Recovery. No extra work required with the scripts. Yes your internal phone memory will still fluctuate.

how do you update the radio rom??

Hi Folks.
Just been issued heros at work and wish to update the radio rom...How is this accomplished??
regards
Lohtse
Firstly it needs to have a recovery image installed I recommend Amon-Ra v 1.6.2.
Secondly you need to find the radio rom you wish to flash and put it onto the root of you phones sd card.
Thirdly enter the recovery image you have installed by holding power and home button from the phone being off.
Then select the radio.zip to flash.
Everything I have said here can easily be found how to do via searching this forum or its wiki.
also www.theunlockr.com will help with installing the recovery image.

First you will need to install the custom recovery console if you haven't done so already.
Then download your updated radio, put it on your SD, load into the recovery, then apply update. DONE!
If that is too brief,... let me know,...
EDIT... Ooops,... too late.
way to complicated...
Too much to do and can screw up..... At least with winmo and symbian was a few clicks...
hmmmmm think will ditch android.....
really? its not complicated at all when you know what your doing. In fact I can say its a damn sight easier (and safer) than modifying blackberry roms and from what I hear also Windows Mobile.

I came from wimo to android, and as it is said, it's quite hard to catch the thing at the beginning, but after everything seems easier than in wimo !! and more reliable... you have almost no chance to brick your hero after you installed the recovery boot.
radio : boot in recovery then select the good option.
rom : nandroid backup / install whatever rom you want / if you don't like it go for nandroid restore ( all you need is two Sd card.. the good one and the one for the "tests" ).... etc....
But at the beginning i was totally out but with a little time.. reading some posts (here and on the web) ... one day everything was more clear !
Ciao

Its not hard at all. You can have the recovery installed and the radio updated in 5 minutes.
For step by step instructions follow the "Installing a recovery image" section in BTDAG's guide linked in my signature.
Then further down the same post, in the second yellow box there are instructions on "Updating your Radio".
Guys, the OP said he was issued the Hero at work, then two hours later said he was going to ditch Android... so what then, he's quitting his job? Troll alert. Don't feed the troll.
As to troll comment(yes offence has been caused)....hmmmmm.... Am going back to the trusty Kaiser... WE DON'T HAVE TO USE THE HERO.... We live in free(ish) world.. And the Phones are issued as an update to our old duty phones... Also I'm not the only one who uses them that feels the same.
Now to updating being easy. Gulp I must be eeer dum!!! Du hu Du HU must be the TROLL in me!
I have tried to install recovery image thing and well just cant get it to work... And now I find I have to root the hero too so things will install to sd card!!!! WTF this should all be standard like winmo and symbian etc...
I have been using smart phones since the Ericsson r380 and so far Android has failed to impress to the degree I am beginning to hate it....
Am far to used to having simply andfull access to everything..
Android is a HUGE learning curve that I suspect I may not have the patience for..

Now I have finally managed to get recovery image on and updated the radio...Being called a troll did it !!!!!!.....LOL

Wahey!!!! Good job man.
Ok,... So now you have the recovery image all you need to do is pick a custom ROM. Personally, I highly recommend MCR3.2 (link in signature at botom). It is an Android 1.5 ROM but is stable and fast, what more could you want for a work phone. This ROM is rooted and has apps2SD enabled. Once you have installed the ROM you will need to remember to create an ext2 partition on the SD card (easily done through the recovery). Then you are set to go!!!!

You're welcome And what ddotpatel said. MCR is fast & clean. By installing a custom recovery you've already done the only tricky bit.

You need to create an ext2 partition on your SD card through the recovery again. I cant remember the exact wording but something like "create ext2 + fat" or something along those lines.
As far as I know, once that has been done all apps will install to SD.
Someone with more knowhow than me correct me if I am wrong?... CAULI?,... LENNY?
Can someone who knows please answer this question:
Are you 100% sure that flashing the Radio ROM does not affect the phone RF Calibration ?
Thanks!

Yup, certainly as far as MCR is concerned. On the first reboot it will move all files from /data/app to /system/sd/app (& similarly for app-private) Nb /sysytem/sd is the mount point for the ext2 partition. All it does is move the files over & then replaces the /data/app (& app-private) directory with a symlink to the new location. That way future installs, updates etc all automatically go to the new location.
You can always check yourself with a terminal emulator & the command ls -l, or using a file manager like Root Explorer, if you're curious. Some people think it's not working because they see available space in internal flash drop as apps are installed, but that's because app data & the dalvik cache remain on internal flash, principally aiui for reasons of access speed. The saving you make just from shifting the apks to sd is more than enough for most people it seems.

A set of tables usually stored in NVRAM that takes into account the slight differences in the components used to build your phone. Every single phone is calibrated during manufacturing.
If the calibration is erased, it will look like it works but you can have all sort of problems from poor battery life to random drop from the network or poor sensibility (not to mention the higher than expected radio levels you could be emitting right next to your brain )

Helpful information:
What ROM you're using?
What was the last thing you did before this began happening?
Did you make Nandroid back up, if so -- have you restored?
Have you tried reinstalling the market application?
Have you tried changing to a different ROM and seeing if the problem occurs?
We're here to help, just gotta give us a little more info.
okay
Im using the Fresh Rom,
the last thing I did was install an app of my SdCard.
I didnt do a restore, only because I haven't done a backup in about a week, and I didnt want to lose all the stuff I've done since then.
I dont really know how to reinstall the market app, but does that also control installs from the sdcard?
and ive been using this rom for about 3 weeks with no problems so I dont know if that was the problem

Hmm...interesting.
The first thing you should do is make a back up. Save all the stuff you have. Then, while still in recovery, I would restore your OLD back up and see if anything changes.
I've created an update.zip file that will automatically delete your Market application (Vending.apk) and then reinstall it. This might or might not fix your problem. Download the file below and copy it to your SD Card, then flash it through recovery.
Tell me what happens.
EDIT:: File was removed due to bad update-script, please see post below.

Well, I'll be honest, I know exactly why you're getting that error... the update script I included in the update.zip file was incorrect. However, I've fixed the problem and uploaded a second version of the update.zip. Please download this file, copy to your sd card and flash. You shouldn't have any problems this time.
Again, this will remove your Market application and then reinstall it. Hope it works, tell me if you have problems. Sorry again.

Wow. Are you using Apps2SD? Also, maybe you should try running a Sprint RUU on your phone, bringing it back to the original factory settings and see if you have problems. If not, try installing a ROM again and see what happens. Otherwise, I'm not sure what's going on here.
Yea I am using App2SD. Im not sure what it is either. It works and then it doesnt sometimes. Its very strange. Reinstalling the Market did work for a little bit, but I don't know. I just keep clearing out the caches and stuff. Maybe that has something to do with it.
Thanks for all your help!

Apps2SD = All of your applications will be installed and stored on your SD Card instead of the internal memory on your phone, thus supposedly increasing performance and such. It's best to have a a decent sized card, but also one labeled "Class 6", as it has the fastest transfer rates, so again better performance. I don't think Apps2SD is your problem, but for the hell of it... if you want, you could try disabling it.
**Before trying this, you need to back up your sd card -- meaning, copying all the stuff from the card onto your Desktop or somewhere on the computer before proceeding to the next step.
To do so; go into recovery and choose:
1. Partition sdcard
2. Partition SD
3. Press Home to confirm
4. Set Swap-size to O MB (Use trackball)
5. Set Ext2-size to 0 MB (Use trackball)
6. Fat32-size = Leave that to Remainder
7. Press Home to confirm.
This will FORMAT (erase) everything on your SD card, but not the phone. After its done, you can reboot, mount your SD Card and copy what you saved to the desktop back onto the SD card, like nothing ever changed. However, what did change is that your applications will no longer be saved to the SD card, but rather the internal memory on the phone.
Also, I would reflash the update.zip that I uploaded the other day and see if this Market thing happens again. If it happens again, I'd say you're better off running the Sprint RUU (bringing your phone back to factory settings) and then starting over from scratch, but that's just me.
Okay I will try that!

[Q] Restart Required Error [SOLVED]

Hi everyone, I've read every topic related but couldn't find any proper solution and couldn't post in development forum also I use linux on desktop but could be counted as a dummie for this stuff.
Here's the sory; Got new fresh nook, without reading any instruction backed up my Nook files via its usb connection as an img file. Then like an idiot, I've writed the nookie image to the NOOK's memory as it seems and got an error. After rebooting my Nook it became unstable in screen and started an error pop-up says:
"Your Nook encountered an error that need to restart
If this problem persists, please contact our Costumer Service."
Since not any core files deleted from my failed root try, just tried to format the drive as it seems 223MB; Nothing changed. What I did for recover is trying to boot up with an SDcard installed nookie devs. Nothing changed. Tried to recover from the back-up file which gave me the error of "Error#0 occured while writing to disk at sector 465792". I've tried to format it via partition wizard but still the same error. Also tried the solution of rosa87 introductions from his topic as it fail as everything else and decided to open a fresh new topic as the problem source is different. Also I'm out of U.S to contact any official technical service.
Any reccomendations?
P.S: I'm on windows machine runs 7.

If you wrote the Noogie image onto your NST, then you did in fact overwrite core files.
You're also not the first one to do this mistake.
- At this point your NST could have been easily fixed by booting the n2T-Recovery v0.2 image.

Why on earth would you do that?
If you don't know what is going on, it sure aren't gonna help formatting parts of the internal flash.
