breaking the warranty - Nexus One General

So i really want to root my N1, but the whole breaking the warranty thing really scares the crap outta me. So far my G1 and my Mytouch 3G haven't had any problems.
Using the nexus stock for about 24 hours now i've noticed the signal drop when you hold it from the bottom, but thats it. Luckily for me 3g signal is ass in almost all the places i go and i normally use wi-fi when i'm doing major browsing/downloading.
But i've seen threads here of these other problems like the radio not working, dust in the screen, and a few other things that make be very nervous about rooting and breaking the warranty.
So i was hoping to get some impressions on the chances of actually having one of these problems, and what i can do if i do get them after i've rooted the phone.

Quick advice would be:
1) Check for hardware defects (IE make sure everything works, headphone jack, Wifi, BlueTooth, all the buttons ect.)
2) Make sure you don't have any dead or stuck pixels in the screen while also checking for dust
3) Break your warranty if you feel your satisfied. Remember it's at your own risk. All you can say.
I happily rooted my phone after what I felt was a thorough "shake down" (checking everything out). Once I felt comfortable there was nothing "hardware defective", I un-locked and have been happy ever since (about 3 months now )
God willing, I did not just jinx's myself.....

if your apprehensive about rooting & voiding ur warranty, fiddle around with the phone & it's features and functions for a while... try out everything... hardware & software... i suggest u do it for a week or two (maybe more) if ur really apprehensive... or if u have it insured, I guess u can take the plunge a little earlier...

so far everything works. wi-fi, 3g, bluetooth, audio jack, usb, all the buttons. Took a while to get used to having to press the top part of them. That and the home/back being reversed lol.
Amazingly no dead pixels. almost every device i've ever owned has had a dead pixel, even TV's lol. But my two OLED devices have none, guess i'm having good luck.
guess i'll give it a few more days and then jump in. thanks for the advice guys!
I guess someone will eventually figure out how to relock the bootloader one day

I am pretty sure you can get a warranty through squaretrade or statefarm even if it is rooted.

insurance != warranty

Dude...just do it. I was scared sh**less like you when I first rooted my ATT N1. But trust me, you'll be excited as all hell while doing it and the results are amazing! You will not go back...NO JOKE! Your warranty may be voided, but you won't brick it (unless you ran out of battery power in the middle of the mod). It only takes about 30 min max, which is plenty of time before your phone's battery craps out.
Don't puss out! Just do it! You'll be SUPREMELY glad you did.
EDIT: You'll notice improvements in almost every category: including better keyboard accuracy and improved window animation/transition.

You can't brick ur phone even if ur battery dies while installing a mod... unless the mod flashes the radio... only flashing the SPL/bootloader or radio can brick ur phone... and at this point in time, for the N1, it's just the radio...

I've found the easiest way to tell if you're going to get the dust under the screen issue is to wait 1-2 weeks for the phone to get bumped around, used, pressed on, etc. and then try pressing down hard on each corner of the screen. Every Nexus I've felt with the dust issue has had a little play in the corners of the screen cover (sometimes even making a noise when you press hard on a corner).

aww come one man, youll be happy you "broke the warranty", i got my brand new nexus one today and i didnt even think twice about it, i mean you get a phone with awesome hardware, why not use it to its full potential? even if it comes down to warranty replacement(for whatever reason dust, defects..etc..)if they charge me 100-170 to replace it then so be it, although it seems like majority of users with unlocked bootloaders have gotten replacement at no charge. With that said im totally willing to gamble...are you?!?!

I would never root the phone personally.
I jailbroke my iPhone 3gs before but that was only because you can restore it back like new and keep your warranty.
No way I would risk the warranty on Mah' Baby!
I've seen the benefits of rooting and I'm not that impressed since the phone already fulfills all of my needs. It's mainly for the stat geeks that love to tinker with their toys and have full control.

with my mytouch i rooted the day i got it, the nexus just makes me a bit nervous seeing that price tag lol.
But yeah i've had 2 days now with no issues and everything seems to be working great. Got the stupid signal thing that it does, but thats okay since i'm on wi-fi anytime i'm doing major data use.
$100-$170 for a replacement isn't that bad, and hopefully someone can relock the bootloader. and i did read that one person who had the dust issue went to google and he got the replacement for free.
So guess i'll take the plunge today. (^_^)

Mods
Ive been reading around and doing my research and I think ill finally take the plunge and root this puppy..
One question though. I keep hearing about all the different mods and stuff. Which one is the best to go with it??

Should I buy this N1?

Someone is selling one for $300. It comes with everything including a case, extra battery, and charger. The only problem? There is a scuff on the top left corner, both on the chrome and on the black part of the LCD.
What do you guys say? Yay or nay?
My main device right now is a BB9700, solely for the UMA. I also have a HD2 and a new Vibrant I'm trying to get rid of (unless the later gets 2.2 ASAP).
I would say
1) make sure the power/lock button works reliably and feels solid
2) while charging, turn on gps navigation, and then start watching some flash videos in the browser in warm weather and make sure the thing doesn't reboot on its own from overheating.
3) when you boot it, does it show an icon of a padlock opened? if so this means the bootloader is unlocked, though not necessarily a bad thing, could spell trouble getting it serviced under warranty.

The phone is supposedly in great condition and I doubt it's under warranty anymore. Is #2 a serious hardware deffect?

All electrical items should have at least one year warranty so there should be a few months left
Its a good price for a great phone, especially if youre a developer.
The metal scuff wont be visible if you use a case.
Go with what #2 said. The second point is an extreme stress test. I'm pretty sure my phone in its case would reboot if the room temperature is above 100F.
i would buy it. good price and the scuff shouldnt be a big deal unless u have ocd with scratches like me hehe.
but a case should come to your aid

great price and u can always send it in for a replacement with htc, say that the ear speaker is messing up or your power button is not working all the time

Warranties don't transfer, do they?
get it. i paid 300 for a used nexus one with a few body scratches and the name "gabriel tran" engraved on the back. a $3 case from ebay and one cyanogenmod6 flash later, i'm a happy camper. don't regret a penny spent on this bad boy.
EDIT: one thing to check for also is screen burn. didn't think about it when i bought it, everything looked peachy. but later i noticed a pretty bad screen burn where the status bar always is at the top of the screen. doesn't bother me since it doesn't really affect anything, but keep your eyes peeled since it's pretty ubiquitous on amoled displays.

I think I might take it just for this alone since it gives me a peace of mind.
Where can the original owner find the receipt/proof of purchase?
probably in their gmail inbox, assuming they didn't delete it.

Just got my Epic :) Now what?

Ok, Just got my epic in the mail. It's charging as I type. I ordered a Realook screen protector immediately and I'll probably keep the one that ships with it on there until that one comes in.
So my question is...What should I do first? I want to customize it as much as possible to keep the battery life as long as possible. Should I root it? What roms do you guys recommend? I'm waiting on a case with a kickstand to come out...so i'll baby it for the first month I guess.
Definitely Root it!!! So many benfits with rooting (Free Wifi Tether,No ADS, Custom roms, Kernals, Get rid of crapware like sprint stuff and more.
Im running andromeda rom with andomeda kernal. I couldnt be happier.
This might be a silly question but if I root it before I activate it will that affect the activation process?
The reason I ask is because I don't have a screen protector yet so I was just going to continue using my other phone until it came in. I know its ridiculous, but I just want to make sure I don't give myself any opportunity to scratch the screen on this expensive phone.
So I'll just play with it until I can actually start making phone calls. Hilarious...adults with their toys.
Just realize the epic uses Gorilla glass.. Unless you continually drop stuff and try hard to scratch the screen your not going to be able to.

Thanks
search for gorilla glass on youtube.
1st?? Why not make sure the phone works as advertised? My suggestion is to check how the well your GPS and other features actually work. Once you get a good feel for the phone, then the rooting should start...

I am so accustomed to rooting, modding, or putting a rom on every smart phone I have ever had that it only seems natural to start that way from the get go. Besides, I'm fairly confidant that stock performance is going to pale in comparison to what I'll see once I've customized it a bit.
But, you are right I'll give it a go stock for a little bit (a day ?) to get a feel for the device before I start slicing and dicing it.

It states plainly that the Galaxy S has gorilla glass, so I think we can safely say that the Epic has it since the Galaxy S is AKA the Epic.

So, I understand that Gorilla glass is supposed to make this thing nearly indestructible, but I've read around these very forums that people are still getting scratches on the screen. Might as well protect my expensive overpriced phone....Sometimes I think who the heck cares since I have insurance and why bother with a case either?

Getting this cheapo ebay case for the time being until they release a functional case with a kickstand that I like. I read a review on this site here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797833 that gave me some hope in buying the triangular shape case. *Crosses Thumbs* Hoping it will hold me over.
I scratched my screen within a week of getting the phone. I customarily leave my keys in the same pocket as my phone. I did this for 2 years w/ an iphone and didn't have a single scratch so i figured the epic would fare similarly. 1 week and there were little micro scratches all over the epics screen. I had other problems with that phone so sprint exchanged it for another one and i promptly got a screen protector. Hopefully i'm the exception and not the rule.

I do the exact same thing...I constantly put my phone in my pocket with my car keys. I notice every little scratch...they gnaw at my subconscious even when i'm not using the phone lol. I thought the Iphone and epic both had gorilla glass...odd that you would scratch one and not the other under similar circumstances.

Sorry man, it's the truth. I'm not flaming the phone or anything, and i'm pretty sure my experience is a rare one. But yes. I'm a fool who keeps his keys in the same pocket as his phone. Miraculously there were no scratches on the iphone3g after about 1.75 years. In case you think i'm somehow trolling the epic you need to realize i disliked everything else about the iphone and even paid the early termination fee to switch to the epic. BTW beside that one negative experience w/ the scratch and wobbly screen (the same unit) i love this phone.
So back on topic. I recommend a screen protector of some sort.

You know I've waited this long for this phone...I think I can hold out another few days before my screen protector comes in.
I'm probably going to root it today...I'll ask again does anyone know if rooting will hinder activating this phone?
Otherwise, I'm just using it as a PMP for now .
Rooting won't hinder activation, however using an aosp rom might. So if u just root and use noobs rom or just leave it stock rom u will be fine.

Thanks! I might just wait then to activate it first before rooting because the main reason I wanted to root is to install a custom kernal/rom.
Battery life sucks on stock so far by the way...I'm getting about 7 hours a day with light usuage before I have to recharge. Admittedly, I have not done much to tweak it, but its a shame that a stock offering from sprint can't hold a whole days charge. I mean what if I wasn't as inclined to rooting/tweaking...I would have to live with the phone like this? Definitely, unacceptable. If I don't see at least a days charge with some light usage on a custom rom/kernal I might consider waiting for another droid phone with a better battery life. I have read some positive results from people with custom roms achieving the battery life I'm looking for so I'm hopeful.

How many times did you exchange your mt4g?

Let The Games Begin...
Post And State Your Reason(s) why you exchanged it.
Im on my 3rd, going to the 4th!
Reason(s): Washed Displays, Wifi Busted
I'm on my third MT4G and here's why:
- First one had a loud creaking sound at the bottom, most noticeably when pressing the back button.
- Second one was dropped less than two feet from the ground with the Flex case on it, and the phone's bezel was scratched and misaligned.
5 times
1. change color
2. power button quit working
3. Tried to get a good screen
4. Tried to get a good screen.
5. I got the good screen Happy so far.
this is messed up i bought mine from craigslist brand new and i called tmo try to exchange it they said they wont do it. because i did not buy it from them. the ime number is not in their system what can i do?
Got mine the day it released and still on the same original one. No creaking, good screen, cameras centered.
Knock on wood...
Exchanged once to get a good screen

Just call them up and ask for technical support. Tell them you want to verify the IMEI number is correct in the system so you can get the OTA update. They may not find it in the system but they can manually put it in. I know because I called them 2 days ago and they told me mine was not in the system. She put it in for me manually.
Then you could call them back up and ask them for a replacement as it will be in the system. you don't have to tell them where you bought it.
If you are the very first person to use the phone, warranty will apply to you. If anyone else has used the phone, your screwed because the warranty only applies to them. I'm still in my original one, I see no reason to exchange it, I swear some people just abuse the system. Eventually it'll end up ruining it for the rest of us.

Exchanged once because the phone earpiece made a buzzing noise.
This is my second one. The first device had a dead pixel and everything else was great. The second one has a clean screen but it's the washed one and it creaks from the bottom of the phone, but the most frustrating is the GPS, it's not working , it detects like 10 SATs but never locks the location. Wifi is acting weird too, it tries to connect to the same network like 2 or 3 times before it connects . I don't like to replace phones that often, if I have to replace a phone more than one time it does say something about quality or their quality check process. I mean how hard is it to check the phone for a misplaced FFC (for me I don't care about that ) ? I am done with the phone and I am going to try the NS. I liked the phone, and I can't understand HTC, how can you build such a great phone and forget about such basic quality issues. I think companies try to save on quality tests and throw their production directly to people to work as cheap test engineers. If a company knows that their phones are that good they will not make it that easy to replace the phone for several number of times for the same customer.
First one exchanged because of creaking buttons.
Second one exchanged because of light leak from bottom edge of screen and a gap between the bezel and the body.
I'm on my third one. Build is fine. Battery life is questionable but tolerable. Screen quality is fine for me but pales in comparison to samoled. I'm keeping this one until the next best thing comes around.

if you want quality control Samsung is not the company to go to I had my Vibrant replaced 4 times all had problems right out the box.
first phone GPS all have this problem plus the phone would freeze where I had to take out battery.
second phone a visible line down the screen.
third phone. turned it on and it just started opening apps and settings randomly.
fourth phone no bugs yet but it is rooted with custom rom on it now and my wife uses it I just got the mytouch 4g sick of samsung.
I bought 2 myTouch 4G and exchanged both of them 1 time. One for a bad screen (see this) and the other one for bad color screen.
After reading this thread. I regret selling my Blackberry 9700. That, and the battery life still sucks. Eff you HTC. Make better quality equipment.
Hoping nothing eff's up on my phone. I use it for work, I'm almost regretting paying in full for it as I need a phone that lasts ALL day under email and internet use. IE. 9am-2am.
I'm hoping third time's the charm....
1st: Creaky back button, sucky HSPA+ speeds
2nd: leaking battery acid from battery!
I'm pretty sure this battery was FUBAR out the box. With moderate use its dead by 4pm, even with using task killer. Whats the best/fastest story I can tell tmo for my first exchange? I've had the phone almost 3 weeks. Would the store do the exchange, or do I need to call Tech Support?
1. Phone app kept fcing and acore fcing.
2. Wanting a better screen and where the bottom on the screen meets the buttons. The light was showing theough the seam.
3. Got a chinese phone. All issues resloved. Very happy now.

Well i was 5 days over my 14 day remorse period. just went in and told then i would like an exchange. So if i were u just give it a shot. I got lucky and got a China made MT4G with a superior screen! Dead Centered FFC. All i did is just ask.
My phone: Original. FFC is slightly off, there is a small cosmetic defect around the BFC bezel, and a -very- small chip in the front chrome near the FFC. Annoyed about it, but not enough to swap for a refurb when everything works -great- (S-OFF, rooted no problems, good screen, etc).
Wife's phone: 1st swap. Original one would -not- take S-OFF or root at ALL. It would even take the ENG HBOOT, but still be S-ON! Replacement has been great and went S-OFF easily like mine
We actually swapped my wife's via 611 even though we bought both phones in store. The store was completely useless in help with anything and will never receive my business again! Called 611, 'cancel' at autoprompt to get a retentions person. They suggested the store, we explained what horrible service we've had since they sold us the phones, he chuckled and said ok no problem new phone on the way.
I swapped out my original MT4G with a washed-out display for a replacement unit with a good display.

Third/Fourth HD2

soooo my touch screen went out about two days ago. not all the way out, just stop recognizing some touches. heavily dependent on which button i used to wake the device. (running MIUI android)
this will be my fourth tmous hd2.. if i want to pay the $130 for a replacement one because my warranty won't cover it because the water damage sticker is pink. even though the phone has never even seen water.
The first hd2 i had, digitizer went out, the replacement wouldn't even get passed the stick together screen on first startup. so i had to send that back and get a new one. I'm not too sure how badly i want to pay the 130 because it's a known problem on the HD2s and the sticker could have turned from someone breathing on it heavily.
I'm thinkin of maaaaybee getting the sensation in a month or so. but since i'm using a sidekick until then, i'm not sure if i can do it lol. it has an astounding battery life of just over an hour.
anyways, that was my rant about HD2s and stupid warranty/insurance stuff.
i am not sure if it's the usage that people give to MO phones, or if it's just bad luck. I've bought mine used, 6months old "as new", and it runs in perfect order, with no problems at all. (lucky i guess)
well the first one i had for i'd say 8 months.
and then this one for about seven.
but i remember reading a thread a while back about cleaning the connection from behind the end button and it helped the problem but i can't find the thread now.

unresponsive touch screen

So my girlfriend drooped my phone and broke it on me. Oh my beloved atrix what ever will I do without you. Everything about the phone is working just fine so I am curious if its just the touch panel that ia broken. I touch the screen and nothing happens I have fully charged it and turned it on and off several times. Do you guys think if I replace the touch panel that there is a chance it will work again. I didn't get insurance on it because I was very careful with it and took care of it like it was my child lol.
First of all I would like to point out that it is ok to admit that you dropped it, and not your gf.
Secondly I would suggest tearing it down and checking the connections. I have seen where the digitizer connector will be loose and wont be responsive on other phones. I have never taken apart the atrix, so I dont know if that is a unlikely thing for it or not.
In the unlikely event that it really was your gf who dropped it, you could always guilt her in to getting you a new phone
Lol I swear it was her we were at the bar last night and she was trying to show somone the gi Joe psa's. Ill try and tear it down have to find a walk through I guess. The real kick in the teeth is I just bought a e book and it was really starting to get good . As far as guilting her, her parent were with us and gave me a kindle fire because they felt bad but the things useless until they get android running well enough on it.
there is a teardown site, i am too lazy to look it up, I am supposed to be studying business law right now ... dont tell my wife im on xda
I tried to replace my digitizer once and I wouldn't recommend trying to fix it yourself.
There are several youtube videos of the teardown and they are elaborate enough but some parts are really tricky and it's not as easy as it might look. Took me a few hours and the result was far from perfect...
Took the mobo out and checked all plugs everything seems fine. Replaced and still no response I will give the digitizer a try hopefully it works. Ordering it tonight and post my results when it comes in and i install it. I'm supprised you had problems putting it back together only problem i had was my God damn shaky hands lol. I am assuming it fell just right and damaged the chip on the digitizer itself. If it ends up working I know for sure that I will be buying a very buff case! The internals on these things are so fragile!
