So my girlfriend drooped my phone and broke it on me. Oh my beloved atrix what ever will I do without you. Everything about the phone is working just fine so I am curious if its just the touch panel that ia broken. I touch the screen and nothing happens I have fully charged it and turned it on and off several times. Do you guys think if I replace the touch panel that there is a chance it will work again. I didn't get insurance on it because I was very careful with it and took care of it like it was my child lol.
First of all I would like to point out that it is ok to admit that you dropped it, and not your gf.
Secondly I would suggest tearing it down and checking the connections. I have seen where the digitizer connector will be loose and wont be responsive on other phones. I have never taken apart the atrix, so I dont know if that is a unlikely thing for it or not.
In the unlikely event that it really was your gf who dropped it, you could always guilt her in to getting you a new phone
Lol I swear it was her we were at the bar last night and she was trying to show somone the gi Joe psa's. Ill try and tear it down have to find a walk through I guess. The real kick in the teeth is I just bought a e book and it was really starting to get good . As far as guilting her, her parent were with us and gave me a kindle fire because they felt bad but the things useless until they get android running well enough on it.
there is a teardown site, i am too lazy to look it up, I am supposed to be studying business law right now ... dont tell my wife im on xda
I tried to replace my digitizer once and I wouldn't recommend trying to fix it yourself.
There are several youtube videos of the teardown and they are elaborate enough but some parts are really tricky and it's not as easy as it might look. Took me a few hours and the result was far from perfect...
Took the mobo out and checked all plugs everything seems fine. Replaced and still no response I will give the digitizer a try hopefully it works. Ordering it tonight and post my results when it comes in and i install it. I'm supprised you had problems putting it back together only problem i had was my God damn shaky hands lol. I am assuming it fell just right and damaged the chip on the digitizer itself. If it ends up working I know for sure that I will be buying a very buff case! The internals on these things are so fragile!

the touchscreen is acting up real bad i have to touch like 20 times for it work sometime it dont work at all
is your phone new? if so how new? take it back to where you purchased it from. did it come into contact with any water? water damage is a *****. do you have insurance? if so make a claim on defective handset
hope this helps
i got used and i cant returen it
I had the same issue after my phone came into contact with bubble solution in my niece's purse. The screen seemed to work randomly for a while and eventually it went all bad. Now I feel like I have a smartphone without the nice resolution! Sorry, I don't think it gets better from here. My phone was also not returnable since I got it on ebay.
Yesterday, I impulsively rooted my phone (my first time), successfully did it after several tries and installed jf 1.5. When everything was done and fully functional, I noticed some resistance when closing the keyboard. I tried closing it several times trying to investigate the cause.. until my screen just went black suddenly, w/ the resistance in closing it getting stronger! What I discovered was that the brown tape inside the screen, bottom part, ( the one you can only see w/ keyboard open) was caught in the hinge ripping it partially out of place. I dont have any idea what is the main finction of that tape/ ribbon but I believe it has something to do w/ the lcd. I ended up w/ a dead phone, won't power up anymore. i called the customer service but they don't have any idea what i'm talking about and suggested me to go to the nearest Tmobile store. I did and to my disappointment, nobody in the store also knows anything about G1, even though I'm pointing out to them the tape that was caught by the hinge! I called customer service and they seem not to understand about that hinge part of G1. Anyway, they will send a replacement in 3 days and I hope they wont discover that I rooted the phone. Well, it won't power up anymore and besides the problem is on the hardware and not on the software I installed.
I came across the same problem posted in one of the forums,a long time ago, coupled w/ some pictures I tried searching it again to no avail.
Anybody here have the same problem w/ G1? I do believe that HTC and Tmobile should be aware of this hardware flaw and do something about it. I love my G1, w/ its physical keyboard. But if all my G1 will end up this way, I may have to find a better phone.
Yep... had the same thing happen to me. Brought it into the store (30 days or less) and got a new one. If your's is older, it should still be under warranty. Contact T-Mobile and they should send you out a new phone.
That ribbon has several conductive traces in it. Basically, its a bunch of wires, and you moosed it out. I would say that it was your fault for forcing it when you should have investigated the problem BEFORE ripping it out.
Sounds like your screen just doesnt turn on, not that its bricked.
Thats the ribbon that connects the lcd and backlight to the ui module. It can be fixed most likely if you're not afraid to take it apart. What prob happened is the ribbon got bent up a bit, and one of the 2 connections for it got pulled out.
I disassembled one of my G1's completely, and there is a very specific way that ribbon has to fit into the hinge. Its not all that difficult, but you have to be very gentle and patient to get it back to where it needs to be.
You should go to the Dev forum, and do a search for G1 repair manual. You'll see what i mean. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about it, although Im not an expert, just a tinkerer.
@lbcoder: you dont have to "investigate" anything, its made the way it should work, all he did is open and close screen, thats called a manufacturer defect, and falls under warranty.
@tr.slate: you are right, however that's exactly what OP put in his post. Nothing bout phone being bricked, but hardware flaw.
@jdc2006: yes, G1`s construction is not the most durable, as we can read around this forum, even i had squeking (or however oyu spell that word) but im guessing that it`s the price we pay for something new as this (though i would expect a bit more from HTC) but i dont think that all will have that problem. though Im on my second G1, first one got nasty case of stuck pixelitis.
now excuse me, i have to dispose a body from the trap.
G`nite.
This is going to be my 4th G1 and I hope the last..
The 1st one- brand new; has dead pixels- returned/replaced
The 2nd one, obviously a refurbished item, keyboard imperfectly fitted; home/call buttons replaced w/ cheap looking plastic, not the marble-like.
This 3rd one- almost perfect but ribbon/hinge flaw.
Good thing is I still have my old HTC Touch
tr.slate.. tnx, I like to tinker too but this beyond my capabilities.
I never had any problems with Tmobile fixing mine...When I first got mine in February 09 the ribbon stuck out a bit....they told me come back in 2 hours, i came back and they had it fixed, as others have said, it really needs to be in the right spot or something bad could happen to it...Its a cell phone, not much space to use.
I did everything so PERFECTLY to change my housing, organizing everything in each step so I can do it efficiently.
Well I put it back together, all excited to turn it back on ...it vibrates but does not display anything. FML
I disassembled the WHOLE THING AGAIN! Put it back together... still nothing.
**** it.
I guess I'll be using my Dash again for a while :/
Most common is the flex cables that run from the lcd to the keyboard area. I bet one is torn or cut. I have a cut one to prove it happens I have heard of others having the same issue. They are just very delicate
I thought that could be the case, but I have examined them multiple times, they're flawless. Maybe it's just a minuscule cut that I'm not seeing, but **** I'm gunna get so annoyed using my Dash.
Every time I went back to my old Dash I was reminded of the good old days of rebooting daily. Yet I still keep my eyes open for a Dash 3G on CL for a good deal to become my new "spare"- when I find one I can finally retire my old beat up Dash for good
I'm already dreading using Windows Mobile again hahahah
sorry to hear that, I hate when things like that happen... hopefully I will learn from this and I hope I do a better job on my own (no offense to you though, haha)
try something please as i'm curious of your problem. start the phone up and use the most powerful flashlight you have and see if the lcd is working or not. i'm curious if it is the backlight, lcd, or flexicable.
The touchscreen died.
Last night when I used it, I notice the touchscreen has no more response.
Tried to power cycle (I still can use the trackball) and it doesn't help.
It's time to say goodbye and you're remembered.
I think I read it was $115 to replace the screen by sending it to HTC, you have this option still I guess.

Give it a good send off if you decide to ditch it. Perhaps strap it to a bunch of fireworks and launch it from your garden? Youtube video is mandatory.
R.I.P. mine is showing symptoms too. And yes please do an attention-sucking funeral.

Bummer! I would frame it because it will be a collector's item someday
hell, give it to me, i replaced my digitizer for 30$ and my phone still does anything i could ever need it to do, and if it cant do i then i can turn on the tether and my laptop can.
replacing the digitizer isn't too much of a pain in the ass other than removing / replacing the glue. i used some heavy duty 3M double sided tape which was just slightly too thick but it'll work until the nexus 3 comes out.
also, might it be a software issue? i've been having random touch screen problems ever since i installed the latest OTA (2.3.4) including non responsiveness and random input.
yeah i used spray adhesive on the tray that holds the led and digitizer, masked off properly worked like a charm
My N1 is showing this symptom too Something bad is coming
I Am So Sorry for Your Loss, You Have My Deepest Sympathy
Buy N1 cheap
I don't have enough posts to show a link but www . icemonkey . com has new N1's.
They have a ton of new in box N1's. My gf just ordered one.

That is a good deal So tempted to order one as a spare...but the shipping/import duty costs would be nasty.
order a digitizer from ebay..... I did it with mine, because my digitizer was cracked. But now its good as new!
If you want to buy a new one, check out swappa .com
My n1 has always had touchscreen issues...so non-responsiveness is nothing new to me. But thanks for the link, I'm def gonna order a spare just in case mine does go completely out b4 the n3 arrives.
Edit: Or not...looks like they already sold out
Power button died on mine and it seems like I get storage error every few days? I i've had a my N1 since day one but it looks like I was might be getting that galaxy s2 sooner than expected.

lol loved mine too, enough so that although I picked up an sgs2 I still have the nexi, a first time for that. I have always sold the old when the next thing came along.
I feel your pain. Please do give your N1 a proper send off.
However, with that said, granted that our work-horse phones are subject to daily wear & tear, but how are you guys handling your N1s? No reason why a digitizer becomes inoperable due to wear because it inherently has no moving parts. Unless of course it gets scratched or dropped.
I'm aware of the inferior digitizer with its multi-touch issue, but simply turning the screen off/on "resets" it. Other than that, it's still as responsive as day one.
N1s (especially when it first came out) aren't cheap. Gotta handle them, or any smartphone really, with kid gloves. I'm still using the cover that came with it and it has saved my N1 from quite a number of drops.
Bottom line, (modded) N1s should continue to keep up (and in some cases still kick ass) with newly released smartphones if we just handle them with a modicum of care.
this sums it up:

Hey man dont let it go just yet. A power cycle isn't all you can do. First try to wipe and flash a new rom. If that dosnt work use fast boot and restore everything to original including your boot loader. I really hope its not dead. If you dont want to buy a new screen there are people who will, so please sell it or give it away on craigslist, you cant just give up on such a legendary phone.
UPDATE: The phone is magically fixed!
Hey guys!
So i was at a party 2 nights ago, and I lost my S2. I finally found it in the morning, it had been outside all night, and then I realised that it had been raining heavily.
I took the battery, sim card and micro sd card out and placed the phone somewhere warm and let it dry for about a day and a half. I plugged it in earlier, and it started charging fine, and then I turned the phone on.
It booted up. The hardware buttons are working fine, and the touch buttons below the screen also work, but the screen is completely unresponsive
EDIT: Just as I posted this, i got signal, so only problem i can see is the touch-screen
Is there anything I can do, or is this phone screwed?
I cant remember if I have Vodafone's insurance or not, I'm praying to god I do :/
Put it in a bag of rice and let it dry out even more

I was gonna say.... put it in rice. Should dry up faster
Had good result with silicate packets (the little bags in shoeboxes and many electrical goods) and rice. But let everything dry for days and don't reassemble - left my old PMP for 5 days after a toilet swim, still working. Smells great too. Honest.
Thanks for the replies guys. I've now put the phone in a bag of rice so I guess I just have to wait and see.
Lol keep us updated!
The problem could by the fact that the digitizer on capacitive screens are very sensitive, it sounds as if that may have been damaged.l I would think that the only thing you can do is to replace the touch screen, because it is gorilla glass and the fact the entire phone would need dismantling, If it isn't insured I would expect it wouldn't be cheap to get replaced. But you should be thankful that you entire phone didn't die, I mean you were quite lucky there. I broke my old hero by leaving it out side for 5-10 min whilst it was raining.
Bad news guys, its still not working.
Cant believe I let this happen, I need some trousers with tighter pockets for this damn phone! (and perhaps not carry it with me when I'm drinking haha)
Luckily its covered under my home insurance.
Do I get a new one or get it repaired?
Edit: Its also bloody ironic that I had just put a pattern unlock screen on my phone, so now I cant back up the contents because its locked! Is there any way to get round this? Or external ways to control the phone so I can get into it?
Cheers
There's insurance that covers phone water damage?
Hazlynch, you really need to keep it much, much longer than one day in the rice.
Trust me, apart from my aforementioned toilet episode, I've also lost phones and PMPs in the snow - all have worked again, but the shortest dessicating time was 3 days.
One day is simply not enough - not saying 100% it'll work after 5 days, but 100% certain it won't after one.
For the record, lost my Cowon S9 (OLED touchscreen) in a snowdrift - 5 days dessicating and worked - still going strong.
Ah right thanks for that info! From what I heard about the digitizer being sensitive I'm not very hopeful, but it wont harm to leave it in the rice longer.
I wasn't with my S9 either, but it surprised me, especially also being a touchscreen device too.
Remember to disassemble as much as you can from the phone - all cards and battery out but also in the box/bag - you need to expose as much surface area as possible of the device to the dessicant.
Try my silicate bag tip posted earlier too!
Let us know wha'ppen?
Ready to give it a try? How's it looking/feeling?
I managed to find some silica packets like you said so I put them in with the rice.
Just turned it on, but still no touchscreen responce

Shame - not optimistic.. A couple more days won't hurt if you have the patience!
Yeah, I wont be able to get anything done about the insurance stuff for a few days anyway, so I'll leave it in there for longer. Starting to miss it now! Haha.
Oh and thanks again for everyone's help on this!
My situation has taken an unexpected turn... Went into vodafone a couple of weeks ago and explained that the touchscreen had stopped working.
They tried to factory reset and do other things to fix it to no avail, so they sent it off to their repair centre to fix.
I received it back today, with a letter which stated that it was thoroughly tested and inspected, and that they found that the fault had been caused by water damage. They explained that water damage falls outside of the manufacturers warranty and they could not repair it.
They also sent a picture which helped to show the extent of the corrosion, which looked a bit nasty.
I turned on the phone anyway when i recieved it, and to my great surprise... it is working - apparently flawlessly.
So it is a happy ending - and has proved to me how badass this phone is

This has me worried haha. My SGS2 has recently took a bit of a bath as well. The phone worked perfectly fine after sitting off overnight drying out. However after about 3 days it started random hang up and shut offs. I sent it in to a repair center a week ago and i am just hoping for the best. I dont have high hopes that they will replace it as it was water damage but i suppose its worth a shot for a $600 phone.
If they dont replace/repair it i will be taking it apart and cleaning it in hopes that i can make it work.
Here is my old sgs2 after a dip in the ocean. No insurance either. What you guys think?
