Well the basic steps which I followed where:
1. Create a goldcard sd
2. Downgrade to rc29 rom
2. Install Ra recovery
3. install latest radio
4. install latest danger spl
5. flash a rom you like
Good luck

So in other word you want to root your phone and install a custom rom, did I get that right?
First find a thread in g1 that explains rooting process, Then go to 'G1's android development' and pick a custom rom that you would like to try, and follow the instructions give in the first post of the custom rom, good luck and happy flashing!

I would like to add, do research on the ROM before you decide which one you will flash. See which one you like the best before you install the ROM. It will be a lot easier in the long run. But of course, you can try each one to see what you like best about them. And then go with the best one (That's a long way and a lot of flashing to do).
This is from my experience (even with the research I did), I currently have a ROM that I might not keep. But it suit me for now until I do more research on what will be the best one for my use.

The only way is to rooted. Especially if you want to get the latest Android 2.x.
Hello,
I'm used to debrand and flash Sony Ericsson devices, but my girlfriend has a HTC wildfire and I'm kind of confused with the debranding...
I found unrevoked3 and wanted to use it, but I don't even get to the part were I should install the android 1.0 drivers, since the pc ıs only asking my for adb-drivers. Does HTC have different then Sony Ericsson? Which one shall I take?
Also I always found manuals about using a goldcard, but these are supposed to be outdated?
Also I'm not able to find an original firmware... I only find RUN exe files. Can someone tell me if it ıs possible to flash original firmware through clockwork mod and maybe give me a link?
I would really appreciate if you guys could help me!
THANK YOU!
Linkin
Look at my guide. It gives you all the files, and is a very simple and easy to use guide.

Thank you for your answer. I have 2 further questions though:
1) Do I really still need the goldcard (thought this was old school^^)?
2) I still dont know how to flash an original firmware AND WHICH FIRMWARE I SHALL TAKE? Can someone please help me with this?

There is a guide on downgrading the phone to an Unbranded WWE ROM here. This will erase all data(including Recovery, everything), but will downgrade you to a Universal ROM with no network branding, as well as HBOOT 1.00.001.
Goldcard? YES. A guide for the same is in the link, follow it to the letter and there will be no problems.

Thank you very much! I'm going to try it tomorrow ;-)
One more question though: can someone tell me where to get the newest RUU file? Update via htc sync?

The step2.bat in the guide is the rom itself. But if you still need a link, it is here. That is the same RUU used in Step2.
worked like a charm! Thank you again!
Do you see any easy way to root the phone now?
Gingerbreak and Superoneclick didnt work :/
edit: never mind, I post it below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
You should be able to use revolutionary but...........
Read the first post, I know its a lot but there's everything you'll need in there.

thank you, I found that way but since it is not my phone, i dont want to s-off it
Anyway, my girlfriend don't need root that much, so I guess I will just leave it here and reinstall here software manually!
Thank you everyone for your help and support!
*edit:
if someone finds a way to root phone without S-OFF: your idea is welcome
In that case, you will have to go through HTC DEV to unlock the bootloader, which is a FAR more cumbersome process IMO. Anyway, upto you really. Otherwise, rooting without S-OFF is not possible on Froyo.
Thank you for that answer. I will look into it... At the moment my girlfriend is happy with the Rom I gave her... But I think about cyanogenmod might be faster (phonepad input on Frodo is really slow...)? We will see :-/

ive been searching for a good htc evo 4g stock rom so i can root my phone. but guess im bad luck or something and everytime when i run a stock ruu exe it would give me an error stating that i need a complete ruu file. do anyone know where i can find this? ive downloaded at least 5 differernt stock rom exe files and none of them would work! thx
Do you mean stock as in not rooted or stock as rooted, but unchanged?
Edit: BTW, this should go in Q&A if not general.
This isn't the right thread...but try Tommy's classic rom...

What's wrong with your current stock ROM? It should be easy to root what ever stock ROM you currently have on your device with revolutionary S-OFF method.
Firstly you need to do some reading on how to root your phone using either the unrevoked or revolutionary method to then be able to use Custom ROMs. Also, keep in mind that the development thread is only for posting developed work; this thread belongs in the Q&A section instead.
well its my first post so give me a break ok? well i was trying to unroot it with unrevoked but i got a error telling me that my firmware was to up to date. so my plan was to download a older shipped rom so i can unroot it but i guess the file that i have was bad so now im stuck on the main screen with "triangles on all 4 corners and htc logo on the center. i cannot get the phone to bootloader as well.
Are you trying to root or unroot you have said both double check before you send your reply so we have accurate information to help you I don't know what you're trying to do from your posts

What do you mean you get stuck? Are you receiving errors? If so do you have screenshots? Not understanding it? Have you popped in irc to see if anyone can help?
Edit: Where are my manners, welcome to the world of G2!

Well, hello there!
You should hop on #g2root on freenode IRC. I'm sure there'll be folks there who'll be more than happy to help you with the rooting process.
With that said. To root the phone you first need to downgrade it to exploitable firmware. The downgrade guide I used was this one by Setherio:
[GUIDE] Downgrade G2 (2.3.X) & DZ (2.3.X) & mT4g (2.3.4) & DHD w/ S-ON to Stock Froyo
All credit for this goes to Setherio, make sure you thank him!
From there, you can root, S-OFF, turn off the SIMLock and get SUPERCID using the wiki method, which you can find here:
Wiki Rooting Guide
Once you have rooted the phone, you can install a recovery. If you use the Wiki method, you'll get CWM3, which is pretty old. I suggest you install the 4EXT recovery. It has a LOT of bugs fixed over from CWM and is touchscreen based!
Site: 4EXT Website - All credit goes to madmaxx82 for his awesome work!
Finally, good starter ROM's (if you want to flash a new ROM that is) would be tsubus' ILWT or MIUI. You can use the ROM Compilation thread as a ROM reference. The thread can be found here:
[COMPILATION][07-03-2012] ROM Thread Index for the (HTC) Vision
All credit goes to Chrusb for his work! Make sure to thank him!
With all that said, welcome to the G2/DZ Fora, and good luck with rooting!
yes I get prompt errors and no I dont have screenshots but this is what I've done so far:
I've downloaded the fre3vo file and copied it to my platform tools folder, then I ran command prompt and this is what I type
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb shell
$ chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
After the third command I get an error saying permission denied, what am I doing wrong?
I've also tried different methods and thanks for the links but I can't seem to root my phone, last time I rooted a phone was like 2-3 years ago with my tmobile g1. Can someone guide me through the steps or let me know what I'm doing wrong?

I did put the files on the right folder, did you root your phone successfully with no errors at all?

The chat room is similiar to the forum, except in real time, so I find its far better for helping people.
Just ask questions and get answers.

If that method is not working try another. I tried several before I had any luck getting root to phone. I had to downgrade first and I think I used gfree method. I'm not good at this stuff, but if you read up and study the info you can get it done.
I like g2hacks.com. check it out.

Hi there,
I have a G1 with the following stats:
Model number: HTC Dream
Firmware: 1.6
Baseband version: 62.52S.20.18H_2.22.20.23
Kernel: 2.6.29.6 [email protected] )
Build number: dream-user 1.6 DRC83 14721 ota-rel-keys
Production team: hiapk.com Ver 3.121_g1_ionS
I would like to upgrade to Android 2.2. but I didn't find any threads or tutorials on how to proceed. I've only found some threads which deal with different RC numbers and I'm afraid if I procede using these tutorials with my actual rc number (83) I might have problems.
Could please somebody help me upgrading my G1?
thanx a lot!
the best way is still to downgrade, exploit the phone then upgrade. I suggest looking at cyanogens wiki for basic root and upgrade, although there are lots of threads all over xda on how to do this search around a bit and I'm sure your questions have already been answered.
after searching google "cyanogen wiki root g1"
follow the steps there
then search the developers forum for ezterrys 2708+ update if you want the newest roms
