So in other word you want to root your phone and install a custom rom, did I get that right?
First find a thread in g1 that explains rooting process, Then go to 'G1's android development' and pick a custom rom that you would like to try, and follow the instructions give in the first post of the custom rom, good luck and happy flashing!

I would like to add, do research on the ROM before you decide which one you will flash. See which one you like the best before you install the ROM. It will be a lot easier in the long run. But of course, you can try each one to see what you like best about them. And then go with the best one (That's a long way and a lot of flashing to do).
This is from my experience (even with the research I did), I currently have a ROM that I might not keep. But it suit me for now until I do more research on what will be the best one for my use.

The only way is to rooted. Especially if you want to get the latest Android 2.x.

I'm just gonna stick with rooting. Will rooting hold up against the update or will I have to nandroid unlock and flash a stock rooted rom?
This has been asked several times. Please visit the Android development section and you will see. A little searching doesn't hurt.

Well there is so much information being thrown around at the moment, that I haven't been able to find a stock rooted 1.47.xx rom, either, and all I do is search.
OP: If you find it, let me know and I will do the same.
thats because one doesnt exist.
Use a patched version of the OTA or a ROM with it baked in and you keep root. Flash non-patched OTA and you loose root. eazy-peazy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712695
the OTA will break your root.
however, if you've already done that, you can reroot since the most recent OTA has been rooted.
Short answer is yes.
Long answer will involve you going to a different sub forum for evo and looking it up.

Ha! Thanks.....believe it or not, that actually explains a lot. I think I'll wait for a stock rooted rom to be available.

Yea, I saw that earlier, but this is for people who upgraded via the OTA 1.47.xx and then lost root. For this to work for me, I'd have to willingly upgrade to the OTA, and then run through these steps. I don't think I want to do that.
I'm in the process of unlocking NAND now since I'm going to need to have that done in order to proceed with anything related to 1.47.xx, so once I get this done, I'll worry about finding something that works.
I am pretty sure this is what you are looking for... It is a Rooted rom, based off the 1.47 update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712695
or this one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
which one of those work?
I was actually running the first of the 2 links myself, since I was having major problems with my EVO, and could only use limited ROMs. It was very reliable, but I wanted the flexibility to run other ROMs. I have not run the one posted in the 2nd link, but from some of the replies, it works well also. If you are already rooted, and are comfortable flashing ROMs, I would recommend the first, since it loads just like any other ROM. It all depends on how much work you want to do.
Hi everyone!
I'm new to all this rooting - have a HTC Hero that is now my 'second' phone since I have recently upgraded to the Galaxy S. I would like to know what is the best guide out there to root my HTC Hero/G2 Touch to load a custom ROM - as i'd like to start using the latest 2.2 Froyo update.
P.S My firmware is currently 1.5 and I have build number 2.73.110.26 on T-Mobile (UK)
If anyone could put me in the right direction i'd be very appreciative - might be a good idea (if not already been done) to create a sticky guide for rooting the hero phone as it seems very common.
Thanks in advance!
p.s i'm not a noob to computers but rooting phones is a new thing to me - so forgive me if i ask a few questions

IMO the guide here is the best:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
Mainly because it is written by me............
But other than that - its probably the most up to date and quickest method available at the moment. I hope it helps and i'm on hand if anything doesn't go to plan (rare).
I second that, that's definitely the best guide on here.

Cheers dude! Thanks i will give that a whirl soon
Hi,
I am a Hero user since day one. I rooted my phone back then with one of the early methods. I had to manually chmod stuff and copy over files or something like this, I don't remember exactly.
Now I haven't followed the root/mod/rom world anymore, but want to install a new rom now.
Do I have to re-root my phone with a new method? Should I reset anything?
I'm a little confused with all the roms - i just want to use a stable froyo 2.2 - which rom would you recommend I go for (I am using a UK T-Mobile phone)
Cheers

It is recommended to have the latest custom recovery installed before flashing a new ROM. So if you turn off your phone, then hold HOME + POWER to boot into the recovery, you should get some writing come up at the bottom. The latest Amon Ra is 1.7 I think.
But apart from that, you can just put the new ROM onto your SD, then flash through the recovery, easy.

FroydVillain 1.5? I haven't updated from 1.4.4 yet but will definitely be doing so this evening.
EDIT.... Also there is that Fusion ROM,... Give that one a try aswel, try to run them for 48hours to get a good feel for the two.
Seriously, I know you guys hate noob posts, that been covered 1000x before.... but, my phone just arrived! This site is very large and scary... if someone could point me to a how to guide and a recommended rom... I would appreciate it.
Thx
THE BEST PLACE to start is: http://www.youtube.com/user/HTCShowMe
uh, thx?
I meant for rooting, custom roms etc... but thx either way.
Try this http://hemorrdroids.net/overclock-undervolt-your-desire-hd/
You can look for custom roms in the Dev section. There are other guides in there too.

First you should decide why you need to root or flash custom roms. If you find out you should also make sure that you know "how to do" steps for rooting transactions.

Sage advice, my thoughts, apply the current OTA update and see how you get on with it as stock, then when you know where you stand think about modding it, Visionary (from Paul at modaco) will attain temp root for you to expirement with and see what root will give you without risk and can apply permanent root when and if its required. Main advice is enjoy your new phone
BTW hold off applying any future OTA updates until they have been examined, as I believe the latest Incredible OTA closes off many of the current root exploits
I would play around with it first before rooting. This way you can see what you think is missing and choose the rom you want accordingly
Agreed and thanks for the concern
I got the same advice when I posted about my nexus one..... 3 days later, I rooted! Wish I read that comment about ota
first though.....
I'll hold off a cooked days as I might not keep it, having no 3g is tough, camera doesn't seem very good and the speaker sound is very tingy.... it has proved I missed Android but this might not be the phone for me

I'm about to root my Evo, the first android phone I have ever attempted to root. I have no idea what I am doing, and woud appreciate some advice. I'm planning to use unrevoked. I"m hoping you can analyze the steps I hope to make and help me through it. I'll even tell you what I want in the end
Tell me if I'm doing this correctly:
1. Install Unrevoked 3
2. Install Unrevoked Infinity
3. Find a custom rom somewhere (I just want a vanilla rom)
4. Be done?
Is this correct? Where do i find a rom btw? I can't wait to get away from sense, I want stock android now!
Moved in EVO 4G General.
try cyanogen

Simple:
http://www.thedroiddemos.com/2010/08/27/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-with-froyo-2-2-video-walkthrough/
Just make sure you load a different ROM up afterwards as a stock rooted ROM isn't usually stable and will usually give you random Force Closes on different apps. I recommend Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo or Cyanogenmod 6 personally. Both are faster and very stable. There's a few Vanilla ROMS under the EVO themes section.
help rooting
I am a first time rooter, and I need simple instructions as a "how-to" guide to rooting. Can anyone walk me through step by step? Just explain it like u would to an idiot. Also, what are the benefits of rooting, and is it un-doable? Thanks!

I am new to the hd2 because I got it for a cheap price from a friend because I thought it would be interesting to use. Its in great condition. I would like to install cwm and ics on it. Its just a little more confusing since this isn't made for android. Could somebody give me a detailed guide or video guide link to install cwm and use it properly for this phone? I'm sort of lost when it comes to the bootloader and stuff. I'm not dumb with computers and phones so don't be afraid to give me a hard guide. I just want one that will do the job and get this device running cwm so I can flash ics or miui. Thanks!
