Wifi Problem - Shift General

My shift cannot view any wireless network. I tried different OS - windows 7, windows XP but nothing. Even after a restore to factory settings with Fn+F3 and windows Vista with all drivers right installed, the problem insists.
When I go to the "device manager" it shows that Marvell sd8686 driver is right installed and the green light of wireless is working. I tried everything , even taking out the battery - no good.
This is 100% not a wifi-router problem because any other PC is capable of detecting my wireless network.
Any help appreciated ! Thanks

I fear the shift has a defectosity with the Wifi card. Mine has the same problem since last winter, and I couldn't find any way around. As sending it back will cost me an amazing 100$ thanks to HTC policy for north america, I just passed on this one and put my shift on retreat.
If anybody solves this without relying to sending it back, I'm all hears

Check your router settings
I had a similar problem where it would not detect my home wifi network. My router is capable of Wireless N, B, and G. N is no problem, but mixing B & G (the router can support both modes) creates issues. Try setting your router to B or G mode only, (and configure the shift to be the same - through the WiFi Driver settings), and hopefully that will work.

Thaihugo you were right. This is a hardware problem. I found a cheaper solution. A usb wifi adapter. Now I can detect and connect to all networks.

Frequent 3g connectivity on/off on vista side

Hi.
Anyone with same problem. I only have seen it on vista side. Working with 3g conectivity. One minute is connected with tray icon showing globe. Then 30 isnt connected with tray icon showing computers with red cross. Then again connected 3 minutes. It seems a problem between vista side and internet sharing service from snapvue. I ve seen this issue in other spanish shift. Maybe a spanish version problem? any idea?
Thanks
Not much help I know but see my thread titled 'continued vista connection problems'. Have you been using internet sharing to gain access to WM 6.0? i noticed Activesync was always starting on the snapvue side which I think is linked to the constant disconnections.
A full restore from the restore partition solved my problem and I now get a steady 3g connection.
Thanks for your response. Not alone now. Format is a solution but we should know the origin of this problem. Obviosly is related with the way connects to 3g, this is, using Internet Shared connection with snapvue...but...why suddenly activesync (client or server part) tries to connect the other side and breaks the internet shared connection? any idea?Did you install sp1? is your shift language english or other one? ( I am trying to discard sources of the problem).
pd. While I write these lines on winmo side I can listen vista side sounds (connect/disconnect each minute...)
Hi,
I did some changes and It seems (by now) the problem is solved. I ve playing with continous 3g connections. This is what I did (I dont know which one did the trick).
1) Disable activesync usb connections for both sides( I did it for vista side days ago but know I did too in snapvue size.
2) Sevice Sync bluetooth Server stopped and set manually.
3) Reset both sides
Now I ve a stable 3g connection....
Daniel
Glad you got it working. What do you do to disable Activesync on the Snapvue side?
I only noticed this problem after installing SP1 but I was working mostly with WIFI so cannot be sure there is a link.

Hi.
The problem is solved, now for sure. Open Activesync in winmo, then menu/connections and uncheck "use usb ...". I removed too the partership between both sides althought It isnt important, I think...
Thanks Daniel. Good to know incase it happens again.
Today I am having the same issue...mmm, I dont know what else I can do. I will post the events I can see in the event's viewer....

Hi Daniel - are you still having these problmes?
Hi. I didnt have that issue anymore. I removed the partership whith the device on vista side. I remove "Usb connection option" on activesync in both sides. I uninstalled "Remove NDIS Share connection" (Device Manager) on vista side and rebooted. Then on restart vista recognized again the device(Remove NDIS Shared connection) after some minutes(5-10 min) and then all worked correctly. I think the last step did the trick. But I am not free of problems. Like I told before when I resume the device and It was hibernated/suspended for a long time (several hours) the 20% of times It cant connect 3g and even I cant restart vista but keeping pressed the power button. So, by now, If my device is going to stay suspended for a long time (night) then I turn it off......
pd. When I need connect vista and snapvue I turn the phone off. I enable usb connection in both sides and use usbtools. After using the connection I undo these steps and all works correctly by now (last 3 weeks).
Ensure too that Vista hasnt setup a new Windows CE device on Device Manager. To check it open Device Manager, then "See devices by connection" and check each usb connection. If you see any Windows CE device disable it. I think both Remove NDIS Shared connection and a Windows CE Device was fighting for the same usb connection (In my case)

OK, the only bit I hadnt tried was the uninstall of the NDIS in device manager. I'll give it a go and see what happens. Thanks again for this reply!
Thanks Daniel for your detailed description on this problem, which I also have. Interesting thing is that for me it only occurs when I am on the move with my Shift. No problems when my Shift remains on my desk (like others described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=381220&page=2 )
On your described solution: I removed the Vista/Snapvue partnership and the usb connection on both sides. But I am not able to do the next step: "Remove NDIS Share connection" in device manager, because it's not there (see attached screenshot). Does this mean it was never there, so I do not have to uninstall it? Or is there a different way to find it?
Hi.
Reset Vista to ensure It boots correctly. Then wait to be 3g connected. Once you are connected the device "Remote NDIS shared connection" should be there under network cards. Then uninstall it and reset again. Once booted you have to wait several minutes until vista detects it again and installs drivers.....
pd. And try to contact HTC. Maybe (only maybe) if HTC is reported with same problem from many people they releases a fix.....
Hi there,
That did not help at all!
Waste of time.
But thanks for the hint.
What DID help for me was closing WMDC through taskmanager.
When you just exit WMDC, task manager still shows that it is running there in the background and apperantly scanning your ports for mobile devices ore something.
I stopped it from running and have a stable connection now.

I think you only have to do it after you used WMDC. On my shift it doesnot start at boot (not anymore...) If I want to sync shift or my kaiser, I need to startup WMDC manualy.

My experiences so far.
Is it possible that it is the energy plan that is responsible for the loss of connection. I installed SP1, no problems it seemed. Today I wanted to use the 3G connection with the battery (balanced energy plan). And then it started to disconnect and to connect in small intervals. I did the routine Daniel described: uninstalled NDIS driver. Reinstalled it but connectivity problems remained.
Is it something to do with the battery powered system?
Because, as soon as stop using the battery, plugging in the power adapter again everything seems to be okay. I am not sure about it, but I think, when I use the max power option with the battery the connection stays and fails when I use the balanced energy plan.
So can it be that something in the energy plan is responsible for the loss of the connection?
Experts, does that make any sense?
I will give it some more tries.
S.
I had the High Performance powerplan on all the time......
had it to
Hi
This is a problem when sp1 is installed and you are using 3g in vista being in balanced or power save power plan. it has nothing to do with activesync and usb ports (i have never had a connection)
i called htc yesterday, they clamed they had never heard about it before, so please as many as possible call htc and tell them then maybe just maybe they would release a fix
in rhe meantime i uninstalled sp1 and everything works
In my case the solution is quite clear.
3G works in Balanced mode and in High Performance when power is plugged in. I am not so sure if it works in “Power Save” even when on power.
3G does not work when either on “Balanced” or “Power Save” when using the battery. Battery works in “High Performance” even when all the options are set like they are in “Balanced” mode.
This I found somewhere else in the forum. It is from Daniel and I guess he says the same, more of less.
Well. I ve been doing many tests and changes and I thing the sd, suspend crashes and 3g closed connections are gone.
I use equilibrated energy plan but I hadn’t any issue when ac connected so I ve modified this plan to make equivalent the behavior when not ac connected, but not success. The problems are still there. Its incredible because the configuration for ac connected/disconnected is the same I ve modified all the parameters (usb, expressPCI, , etc)
So I ve set High performance plan and I ve modified it a little bit, only screen brightness when no ac connected and now all works correctly. I start the system (no ac connected). Then I suspend / wake, hibernate/resume the system several times being ac no connected and the problems are gone. 3g connection is very stable. No crashes from standby to hibernate state. No sd missing problem. So by now I will keep in this "High Performance" modified state
pd. So It seems that a plan is compounded by customizable parameters by the user and hidden parameters)
Now, those who have not installed SP1. Is this really no issue for you? Or have you always been on power or always used “High Performance”?
Well, even when I plug in my external battery and the green light indicates that the machine has been plugged to power, even then it only works in “high performance” and not in the two other modes.
Very strange!

SIM CARD Guidance

I am having a situation that is driving me nuts.
My access to the Internet on Win Mob works great via my SIM Card connection, however on my Vista side the system sees the SIM card and the Operator, but states local only. The vista network pipeline view shows a red X on the internet pipe.
How can I make the Vista side make the SIM connect to the internet??, if a switch to Win Mo its connecting with no problem!.
Just in case the WiFi works with no problems on the Vista side
check
1 - check the IP v4 settings on your adapter in Vista, is it on DHCP ? It must be when you try to connect to the Telco's GPRS network
2 - check to see if NIC/Network adapter is turned on at all.
3 - Check to see if your MODEM is active in Vista, via the top left button on your shift
4 - Did you install any liberation software ? I had to "connect to vista" once, after reinstallation, afterwards, Vista connects automatically to WinMo/SnapVue for internet.
5 - Has it EVER worked for you, or not ?
6 - Be patient, reboot, wait for 3 minutes to let vista connect and find the modem in WinMo/SnapVue.
7 - When resuming from hibernation, or sleep, it might not work. Check the forum
8 - Set your powerplan to max performace, see if that helps It does for other people
Guidance
Thanks Lucid, see comments
1 - check the IP v4 settings on your adapter in Vista, is it on DHCP ? It must be when you try to connect to the Telco's GPRS network.
CHECKED-YES it was even when it states Local Only
2 - check to see if NIC/Network adapter is turned on at all.
I am not sure what is the Network Adapter?. Were do I see this.
3 - Check to see if your MODEM is active in Vista, via the top left button on your shift
When I go to comm manger it states ON and ATT
4 - Did you install any liberation software ? I had to "connect to vista" once, after reinstallation, afterwards, Vista connects automatically to WinMo/SnapVue for internet.
I did Liberate and one time used the USB tool. If that was the case should I reset Snap Vue???
5 - Has it EVER worked for you, or not ?
Yes
6 - Be patient, reboot, wait for 3 minutes to let vista connect and find the modem in WinMo/SnapVue.
I have left it for an hour. the Win Mo connects in quickly , but nothing ever happens in Vista
Thanks again for your comments
Guidance
Lucid, one last question.
I have the USB Tool operational and I have Win Mo and Vista connected via the connection manager.
Vista states now disconnected?
Is this the normal condition?
Win Mo is still connected
SIM Card Sucess UPDATE
So here is what I found to be able to resolve my dead Vista connection issue:
1) I check the items Lucid mentioned (IP v$ set to DHCP/ NIC adapter/Liberate), including connecting using USB tool.
2) Went into my connections and verified that all of the connection drop down menu windows had the Wireless Operator System selected
3) Went into Active Sync/Menu/Connection and discovered that connection to USB was checked. I unchecked.
4) Reboot machine and left alone for 5 minutes.
5) Win Mo was going back and forth on connection, until it got stable . One minute after that Vista connected and has remained On.
I will monitor after I go into sleep and come out

WiFi Solved ....for now

Those of you having similar issues as I have been describing recently I have (I hope) got a solution to you (I'm now using full XP tablet). In my advanced tab under device manager (Marvell) I changed power save mode from default to "IEEE 802.11 etc" and Radio Off to enable....everything else per how the driver loads it...almost the second I changed the Power Save mode it picked up all the local networks.
Good luck guys and gal;s....some better XP Tab instructions coming soon I hope. I could never use Vista again!
Ah, spoke too soon...it's stopped working again....damned thing....suspect it is the chip, or antenna or somehtign else. XP says it is still working 100% but it can't see any networks.
Now looking for an SD card WiFi that works in Windows (almost all are only WinMo)....

[Q] Intermitent wifi problems

Hello
I have this brand new HTC Shift. I have just installed Windows 7 and installed all the drivers with compatibility, in order and as admin, etc etc.
But I have a problem with Wifi. It just finds networks from time to time. And sometimes not all networks.
After many tries, I was able to connect to my network after disabling security. It stayed connected and could surf and so with no problems. So I though lets try to put the security back on, and I disconnected to reconnect using password but I just won't find the network.
Right now I only get the neightbours network from time to time. I can't see my network.
The driver installed says the following
Marvell sd8686 Wireless LAN SDIO Adapter
17/12/2007
8.114.123.139
Should I try a different driver version?
Should I downgrade to Vista and check if it worked fine there? (sadly I erased the recovery on the HDD, so I can't do it that way)

[Q] "No networks found" Windows 8.1

I have a problem with my wireless connection in Windows 8.1. There is no networks under wifi even though my phone sees 6 of them around me.
Wireless suddenly disconnected while I was surfing - no software installation / modification was done.
Installed a fresh copy of Windows helped me to fix the problem - for a few hours only.
I know that there is no problem with the router as the wifi works on other computers in the house and also on my mobile phone.
Resetting winsock and ip in command prompt works only sometimes but it still disconnects after some time (could be 15 minutes or few hours).
Tried installing new drivers, my ip setting are all set to automatic.
My adapter is Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN.
If anyone would offer any tips on how to fix it I would be appreciated.
Thank you

Go to your device manager find your Wi-Fi card right click it and go to "Properties". Look for the power management tab on the far right on top in your Wi-Fi cards settings and make sure "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked. This should resolve the issue.

Yes I already said it. Tried to install the driver manually (few older versions too), and also used the Microsoft Update Utility,
The device shows up in the Device Manager, but it doesnt show me any wireless networks available.
I also tried it on a fresh install of windows (no additional software like anti-virus or firewall), still have the same problem.

I also have no more ideas, tried many things, that is why I asked here,
strange thing is that it used to work perfectly, and that it still doesn't work even on a fresh system.
My laptop is Sager NP8760, went to their website but the drivers are really old (2012), I have installed those, still the same. At this stage I have also tried Windows 7 drivers, same thing.
I also tried running a small .bat script:
Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
But the wi-fi seems to work randomly all of the time - it might work for 5min up to about 1-2 hours and then the networks suddenly disappear without me doing anything specific.
Thanks for your help I will keep using my mobile as a tethering device - at least that can help me to have internet in my laptop

I found this when browsing online...
Code:
Verify that you have your wireless adapter set on Maximum performance in Power Management Advanced settings.
|Right click on the battery icon in your taskbar->Power Options->Change Plan Settings{For the selected plan}->Change Advanced Power Settings->Wireless Adapter Settings|
Next you will have to go to device manager and change the setting that allows override of the Power Management because someone who designed it wasn't thinking clearly...
You can type in the search box in the start menu for Device Manager or go to
|Control Panel->Hardware & Sound->Look for Device Manager, it could be under Devices & Printers as well depending on how you have your category view layout->Right Click your Intel Display Adapter and select properties->Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn of this device to save power" Then Click OK
You did enough on the software side. That the problem is intermittent indicates that it's probably hardware-related and not software. Possibilities:
. flaky adapter connection - Remove adapter from its socket and reseat it. Disconnect antenna connectors and reconnect them. Check for connectivity.
. flaky adapter - Plug in a USB wifi adapter (with preferably detachable external duck antenna) and use that. Check for connectivity. If bad connectivity also happens with this adapter, then the problem resides in the system (which is unlikely).
. flaky router and/or incompatible router-adapter combo - Get a cheap router to temporarily replace present router. Check for connectivity. That the combo worked previously before makes this unlikely, but it's still worthwhile to check if those above fail to provide answers.
Basically you'll be going through the process of elimination to ferret out the issue.

Opened my laptop today, but the connection and the card look like new, cleaned it out, worked for about 10 minutes when I put it back in and powered on.
I dont have any wifi adapter to check, but to get to the case I would have to get a new internal adapter (Intel 5300) and check it that would work.
Router is ok, it never looses my connection in the smartphone, reseted it but seems like its working fine all the time.
Just a follow-up to my problem.
It seems like something keeps killing my Wi-Fi in Windows 8.1. This is strange as also happens on a new system (without any updates/programs/drivers).
I know its a 8.1 software problem because I have installed Windows 10 as a dual-boot and the internet works without any problems - no disconnections or problems.
By the way new version is really nice - at least after few days of usage.
Also when I go into 8.1 and my connections disappear, after going to 10 the networks are disconnected for a while, but after about a minute its all back to normal.
When I go straight into Win10 its connected from the start.
It seems like there is some problem in some Win8.1 component that keeps breaking my connection, but I cannot seem to resolve it, well I just have to use Win10 for now and wait for a final release.
Thanks for your help guys !
