Received Nexus One Replacement Phone Today - Interesting Observations - Nexus One General

HTC sent me a replacement unit for the Nexus One I have with dust under the screen. Here are my observations:
- A Nexus One with no battery or battery cover was loosely surrounded by the plastic that comes with a new phone, sitting in a standard shipping box with some bubble wrap.
- The phone appears to be unused - no scratches anywhere, not even near the USB port.
- The serial number on the replacement phone is 7936 higher than on the original N1.
- The part number on the new phone is: "99HKE002-01" but the part number on the old N1 is "99HKE002-00 F". Not sure what the "F" is for, but it looks like I got a newer revision of the N1. I bought the first N1 a couple of days after release. What is the p/n on the new AT&T version of the N1?
- The IMEI number on the replacement phone is 6825776 higher than my original N1.
- The darker plastic parts on the phone are a different color than my original N1. It is more of light gray color than the darker, almost chocolate original color. I like the original more, and now my battery cover does not match the rest of the phone.
- The trackball is a different color. It is now almost transparent white instead of transparent darker color like the dark plastic. It's possible my old trackball is just dirty, but I don't think that is the case.
- The volume button (especially volume down) on the replacement phone has much better feeling when pressed. It seems to have longer travel when depressed, and it clicks better. I always thought the volume down button on my original phone was not that great.
- The haptic feedback is less intense (too weak) with the replacement phone. I'm not sure if this is because I was using custom ROMs and kernels or if there is a hardware/software change with the replacement phone.
- The screen on the new phone seems sharper than the old screen, could just be imagining it. The old phone had some dead pixels and could have some other underlying problem.
- The battery life is significantly better, maybe related to the seemingly different screen. It might just be because the custom ROMs have worse battery life. Huge difference though.
- The replacement phone is not engraved, but I was told that would be the case.
- The old battery cover fits fine on the new phone.
- There is no dust under the screen, yet.
I am happy with the replacement phone because it seems to be brand new and a rev newer than the original N1 I have. I assume they made some very small improvements with the revision, but it could also just be something as minor as the plastic coming from a different paint batch, or a better adhesive was used under the screen to stop dust from coming in, who knows.
The only downside is the different color of the plastic. I would be bothered by the color difference, especially since the battery cover does not match the rest of the phone anymore, and because I like the old color more, but I plan on sending the phone into Colorware for a matte black unicolor finish. My only worry here is that Colorware will have to remove the screen to paint the plastic, and when they put it back together they will have to re-use the original adhesive tape on the back of the screen, which may not seal properly and give me dust under my screen again.
I'll try to take some pictures and post them later.

Interesting stuff, I have been wondering if there have been runnning production changes and it appears that there may well be some.

was the phone you replaced rooted? did they replace it anyway if so?

Yes, my original N1 that I'm packing up to ship back now was rooted. They may or may not honor the warranty, and may make me pay to repair the dusty screen, or they might just let me send back the replacement phone (I won't root the replacement until I hear back from HTC). Worst case scenario I end up with two N1s that I paid full price for. I would just sell the old one on ebay or craigslist.
I'll call up about the color difference and see if they will send me a matching battery cover.

I've also noticed the significant difference in battery life between nexus ones. I've had a t-mobile one and two at&t ones, one a swap for the other with a dead pixel (you probably saw my recent thread about the displays.) The t-mobile one had great battery life, the first at&t one was bad at about half the battery life, and this new at&t one seems to have good battery life, on par with the original t-mobile one. I'm surprised at the variability of these phones.

By chance did the 99HKE002-00 F have bad battery life too? Cause I can hardly go a full day without being on EDGE.

I could get about 12-14 hours with moderate use, 1-2 hours of web surfing, 1-2 phone calls, 5-6 sms.

Did you notice a change in screen color temperature? I received my replacement Nexus One and it too has very very weak haptic feedback vibration.
What's worse is that my screen on low brightness setting looks totally pink! I've contacted HTC about this and they're going to be swapping the replacement for another replacement. I'm hoping that the replacement won't have these defects.

What about external speaker guys? Do you found it louder from the older devices?

The loudspeaker is pretty much the same between my tmo and att nexus's. I sold my tmo nexus so I can't do a side-by-side comparison, but IMO, the screen of my new att is less saturated and more blue'ish, not a bad thing though. The autobrightness is not as good as my tmo version. The brightness is always set to low by the phone

I don't notice any pink color on low brightness, but I really don't have a good eye for these things. It certainly is not obvious if it there at all.
Did HTC say anything about the weak haptic feedback?
EDIT: Damnit man, now I kinda might be maybe seeing some pink on low brightness. No idea if it was the same on the last phone though.

My ATT N1 Serial number ends in 00 B

Sounds like what I'm getting now with these two batteries. So how is your battery life now with you new swap one?

With the new N1 I make it ~16 hours with about 30% left, as opposed to 0% after ~12-14 hours with the old N1. Again, the old phone was rooted, but I doubt the custom ROMs make that big a difference, if any.
Today, I took the phone off the charger at 7am and it is now 930PM. I have used the phone very lightly today and am at ~65%.

My phone barely makes it 6 hours with only moderate usage... It was part of the reason I was going to return the device...

With an overclocked CPU and using JIT, my old phone would last almost double that.
Your phone is defective. Call HTC for a replacement. It took only two days for the replacement phone to arrive.

Well they told me they will waive all of the restocking fees and such. So I am just going to return everything and repurchase somewhere down the line... I wanted to make sure I can return the thing if I can't adjust from the iPhone.
But for example, today I spent most of the day in the airplane so it was in my pocket on standby. Took her off the charger at about 11 thing was warning me about 15% around 6:30, and I was flying all day so I didn't even use it for more than an hour or so.

3 Brand-new replacement EVOs from Sprint.com - Still 0003HW - Changes!

Anyone gotten one of the new evos from sprint.com that they just got in stock this week?
My 3 replacements showed up today, but they're at the billing address. I called at 5PM MST yesterday and they were there at 10am this morning - talk about UPS fast.
Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone else had gotten one yet and if it was hardware 0004. I guess I'll find out tomorrow afternoon when I go pick them up and report back on here about the differences since we have 3 0002 with light leakage and mine with the speaker kazoo effect. Haha.
Please keep us updated on if this is a different hardware version or not. I'll be replacing my 003 come Monday because of light leakage around three outer edges (but mostly because of a scratch and i want a shiny new one now that my screen protector is in haha).
Mine is only 4 days old and it says hardware version 0003. Was on waiting list and they got in 15 on Wed
0003
I ordered 2 evo's from Sprint.com as soon as they got back in stock on Tues 6/29 about 4pm pst, Got them on Thur (7/1) They a Hardware version 0003.
They were better,any light leakage?

Google "Olestra" , I'd bet that's why.
So far as 004's, I have a Novatek 002 with very slight light leakage but my buddy at da Shack has a brand new one coming in for me...If it's an 004 I'll grab it, if it's an 002 I'm pretty sure I'll take it...but if it's an 003 who knows what screen it has, though I'm sure he'll let me check it first.
But for some reason I have very high hopes for 004's, if they ever get produced.
I just got a replacement Evo cause I pricked mine its version 3, flat black battery cover, battery with a gold or silver strip(don't remember which it is) and no light leakage so far. But my battery blows!!!!!! Terribly!!!!!! Worse than with the solid red battery. Idk what to do about the battery I've tried all the tricks nothing seems to work

hardware 003
rooted and flashed fresh 0.53
no problem so far (battery life is reasonable considering i m using live wallpaper and slide show photo frame)
I'll keep you all posted later today when I get the 3 new ones. I'll compaire them with the old ones, too and probably take pics of any differences.
Does anyone know what I can keep from the old ones? I'd really like to keep the chargers, battery covers and batteries if I can get away with it. They'll be going back to sprint.com, so I'm not sure what their pollocy is.
Also, how should I back up the current phones? They're all rooted, so I just need to back up the apps and settings. I know I've read that all the settings are saved on your google account, but is every single setting in the settings menu really saved, or just your email, facebook, ect. accounts saved?

Google just backs up contacts emails, calendar, that sort of stuff. Titanium backup should do the trick with apps and settings. I'm not sure if a nandroid backup would work, or I would suggest that. But I think the nandroid backup will only work on the device that was used to make the backup. Correct me if I'm wrong.. Haven't tried this yet.
Ordered on teusday night by phone thru sprint, and got my it the next day no shipping no acctivation fee. Its an 0003 with the epson screen. Man this phone rocks!!! Iphone can kiss my customizable butt
Small update: Just unboxed the 3 replacement phones. Non of them have the screen popping up problem and it almost seems as if they are sunk down a little bit more than my first one. All 3 have the new epson screen, which I don't think looks quite as good, but it's more of a true black, not a purpley black.
They're all 0003. Also, if you look under your battery, the number in the bottom right is something something - something XA, my first evo (0002) just said A there.
And all 3 have the new battery with the silver foil around them with sharper corners.
For now, that's all I can see that's different. I'll update more later.

Just checked. One of the old ones and one of the new ones both say 2.1-update1 and since the old one didn't receive the OTA, I'm guessing the new ones don't have the OTA installed.

Great! So I get to keep the 3 extra battery covers, batteries, chargers, ect.? If so, that evens out the problem with them giving me the run around trying to get these replacements.
So it seems that all (if not most) of the new Evo is HW003 with Epson screens?

Yes, I would say all. The 3 that I just unboxed all had a little bit different tent to them, but nothing like the 0002hw screens.
Not really I got mine yesterday with a Build date of June 16 and its Novatec.

How many times did you exchange your mt4g?

Let The Games Begin...
Post And State Your Reason(s) why you exchanged it.
Im on my 3rd, going to the 4th!
Reason(s): Washed Displays, Wifi Busted
I'm on my third MT4G and here's why:
- First one had a loud creaking sound at the bottom, most noticeably when pressing the back button.
- Second one was dropped less than two feet from the ground with the Flex case on it, and the phone's bezel was scratched and misaligned.
5 times
1. change color
2. power button quit working
3. Tried to get a good screen
4. Tried to get a good screen.
5. I got the good screen Happy so far.
this is messed up i bought mine from craigslist brand new and i called tmo try to exchange it they said they wont do it. because i did not buy it from them. the ime number is not in their system what can i do?
Got mine the day it released and still on the same original one. No creaking, good screen, cameras centered.
Knock on wood...
Exchanged once to get a good screen

Just call them up and ask for technical support. Tell them you want to verify the IMEI number is correct in the system so you can get the OTA update. They may not find it in the system but they can manually put it in. I know because I called them 2 days ago and they told me mine was not in the system. She put it in for me manually.
Then you could call them back up and ask them for a replacement as it will be in the system. you don't have to tell them where you bought it.
If you are the very first person to use the phone, warranty will apply to you. If anyone else has used the phone, your screwed because the warranty only applies to them. I'm still in my original one, I see no reason to exchange it, I swear some people just abuse the system. Eventually it'll end up ruining it for the rest of us.

Exchanged once because the phone earpiece made a buzzing noise.
This is my second one. The first device had a dead pixel and everything else was great. The second one has a clean screen but it's the washed one and it creaks from the bottom of the phone, but the most frustrating is the GPS, it's not working , it detects like 10 SATs but never locks the location. Wifi is acting weird too, it tries to connect to the same network like 2 or 3 times before it connects . I don't like to replace phones that often, if I have to replace a phone more than one time it does say something about quality or their quality check process. I mean how hard is it to check the phone for a misplaced FFC (for me I don't care about that ) ? I am done with the phone and I am going to try the NS. I liked the phone, and I can't understand HTC, how can you build such a great phone and forget about such basic quality issues. I think companies try to save on quality tests and throw their production directly to people to work as cheap test engineers. If a company knows that their phones are that good they will not make it that easy to replace the phone for several number of times for the same customer.
First one exchanged because of creaking buttons.
Second one exchanged because of light leak from bottom edge of screen and a gap between the bezel and the body.
I'm on my third one. Build is fine. Battery life is questionable but tolerable. Screen quality is fine for me but pales in comparison to samoled. I'm keeping this one until the next best thing comes around.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G

if you want quality control Samsung is not the company to go to I had my Vibrant replaced 4 times all had problems right out the box.
first phone GPS all have this problem plus the phone would freeze where I had to take out battery.
second phone a visible line down the screen.
third phone. turned it on and it just started opening apps and settings randomly.
fourth phone no bugs yet but it is rooted with custom rom on it now and my wife uses it I just got the mytouch 4g sick of samsung.
I bought 2 myTouch 4G and exchanged both of them 1 time. One for a bad screen (see this) and the other one for bad color screen.
After reading this thread. I regret selling my Blackberry 9700. That, and the battery life still sucks. Eff you HTC. Make better quality equipment.
Hoping nothing eff's up on my phone. I use it for work, I'm almost regretting paying in full for it as I need a phone that lasts ALL day under email and internet use. IE. 9am-2am.
I'm hoping third time's the charm....
1st: Creaky back button, sucky HSPA+ speeds
2nd: leaking battery acid from battery!
I'm pretty sure this battery was FUBAR out the box. With moderate use its dead by 4pm, even with using task killer. Whats the best/fastest story I can tell tmo for my first exchange? I've had the phone almost 3 weeks. Would the store do the exchange, or do I need to call Tech Support?
1. Phone app kept fcing and acore fcing.
2. Wanting a better screen and where the bottom on the screen meets the buttons. The light was showing theough the seam.
3. Got a chinese phone. All issues resloved. Very happy now.

Well i was 5 days over my 14 day remorse period. just went in and told then i would like an exchange. So if i were u just give it a shot. I got lucky and got a China made MT4G with a superior screen! Dead Centered FFC. All i did is just ask.
My phone: Original. FFC is slightly off, there is a small cosmetic defect around the BFC bezel, and a -very- small chip in the front chrome near the FFC. Annoyed about it, but not enough to swap for a refurb when everything works -great- (S-OFF, rooted no problems, good screen, etc).
Wife's phone: 1st swap. Original one would -not- take S-OFF or root at ALL. It would even take the ENG HBOOT, but still be S-ON! Replacement has been great and went S-OFF easily like mine
We actually swapped my wife's via 611 even though we bought both phones in store. The store was completely useless in help with anything and will never receive my business again! Called 611, 'cancel' at autoprompt to get a retentions person. They suggested the store, we explained what horrible service we've had since they sold us the phones, he chuckled and said ok no problem new phone on the way.
I swapped out my original MT4G with a washed-out display for a replacement unit with a good display.

HTC Desire HD Screen Issue

This is my mates HTC Desire HD, he keeps it in an Official HTC case which covers the full screen and is very careful with it.
A mark has appeared on the middle of the screen which as you can see in the video is really annoying. He has not dropped it, nor hit it with anything.
Anyone got any ideas, or have had the same problem??
Here is a very small video which demonstrates the issue that I placed on YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTtFHV2IdNA
Looks like he has either sat on it or had soemthing heavy pressing on the center of the screen. Either way it looks as if the LCD layer is sitting too close to the digitiser and even the slightest pressure on the screen causes that distortion.
I'm not aware of a fix other than a new digitiser maybe.
Contact the dealer. Maybe you're friend can get an replacement (Y)
Update... turns out over the weekend my mate took out the extended battery (he had to use tweezers to get it out!).
He had purchased from an Ebay seller from a UK seller (not an official HTC battery though). It was a 1600mah battery.
The issue went instantly.
Looking at the 1600mah battery, its curved!
So beware everyone, get an official battery! Or risk screwing up your touchscreen!
Thats interesting . First time I have heard a battery casuing screen problems.

TS said that the battery was curved so it was prolly pushing against the inside of the phone onto the panel
Hi just joined as its my phone in question
The battery has bulged very slightly in the middle so that if you placed it on a flat surface either way up you can rock it in any direction. I reckon its approx 2mm thicker on either side in the middle than at the edge
Signs were there over the past few weeks as it wasn't lasting as long on each charge and no-where near as long as the original HTC HD battery which is now back in the phone.
As to the High capacity one its a generic battery i.e. no mfr markings on the black and white label
Details say
"Replacement for HTC Desire HD" on two lines in top left corner
"Li-on 3.7V" in top right
"3.7VDC 1600mAh" below that and CE logo next to that
You will find the battery sold at lots of places online (both UK and international) as the picture from the UK seller I bought it from was by no means unique.
You better buy a second original battery from HTC.
5 mins ago i read about buying a nonHTC battery with higher capacity and I nearly ordered it. Good thind I found this thread.
Thank you

Brand new SGS2, screen defect

I just took delivery of my SGS2 yesterday, and I gotta say I absolutely love this phone. Coming from an LG eXpo with WinMo 6.5 and never having used Android, it doesn't even feel like a phone. Plus with all the easy integration with my Google accounts, I've never had a smoother transition to a new device before. All this makes it all the more difficult for me to have to send it back...
I'm not sure if anyone else has encountered this problem, but it looks like my phone came pre-packaged with burn in or something in the form of a dark circle near the upper right side of my screen. I've attached some photos of what it looks like.
I noticed this abnormality in the first 10 minutes or so of using the phone while looking at some photos on my Picasa account. I almost feel like this phone could have been a refurb unit, or the screen was reused or something. In fact, there appears to be more substantial burn in than I can photograph, as there are several other places where I can see strange distortions. Most, if not all, only show up when the brightness is less than 100%. I'd thought maybe it was some widget that caused the burn in, but I haven't been able to figure out which one it could be.
Anywho, I've already arranged an RMA thru Expansys-USA, and they did so without even asking any questions after my email with photos of the problem. So far I've received amazing support from Expansys-USA and definitely recommend them. Also going to see if I can request a replacement sent before I send back this one so I won't be without a phone during the shipping time, something they mention is possible in the RMA email (though they do charge you for it, to be refunded once they get the defective unit back and inspect it).
Would be interesting to see if anyone else has this problem. If there's already another post on this subject, sorry about this new one... didn't see any when I searched tho.
I can see the same thing on mine if I put it on the lowest brightness setting and display a grey image. Nowhere near as pronounced as on yours though, have to really really look for it, so can't be arsed to do anything about it.
Interesting that it's a perfect circle though, could it be just above the CPU or something?
Nope, haven't got that circle on mine at all.
Maybe an assembly worker lost their wedding ring, lol...
You'll be fine, it's an RMA for sure!
Defo a faulty phone

I believe that mark is from the vacuum suction cup on the assembly line from the automated machine that handles positioning the display component. It technically should disappear over time, but I don't know how long.
I don't think it's the CPU, though to be honest I'm not sure where it is under the screen. There is that odd gold-colored sensor or whatever under that area, I think.
If it's a wedding ring, maybe this phone's worth more than the sticker price! haha
Vacuum cup huh... that's pretty bad if it's damaging the screen while doing that. I don't want to wait and see if it will disappear. If I do wait and it doesn't go away I'll be out $725 on a phone with a screen that'll constantly bug me.
Kinda funny, as I was looking at the photos I attached, I saw two rings... one in the photo, and the real one. Startled me when I first saw it.
I didnt have the same problem as you but i had line banding or something on my one.. i had to replace it 4 times then noticed it overheated+smell coming from it.. so i just returned it and got my money back.
Just be aware that you might get another faulty phone.. If i was you i would wait till it comes out in the US.
That sucks, and it's not good that other people are having some issues as well. Good to hear that Expansys is honoring their agreements though
This is why I don't import anymore

Could well be spot on. I don't know if I'm imagining this, but I'm having more and more trouble seeing this ring on my display heh (had the phone for 9 days now).

Man, that's really unlucky! Knock on wood, I hope I don't get another bad one. However I'm not sure waiting will do me much good. History has shown me that branded devices tend to have a lot of crap on them and lack certain features at times, and I don't have as much time as I used to to keep up with the scene to make the phone operate better all the time. Also, I'm contract-free with unlimited data on AT&T, and I don't like being locked into contracts. This isn't my first non-US phone, though. I'm happy to pay the extra money so long as it means I don't have to sign a contract.

From the Expansys-USA thread, sounds like they'll ship the phone back to the UK to have it serviced for you if it ever goes bad. This doesn't sound uncommon, either, as I've had a friend here ship his JP Xbox 360 back to Japan to have it serviced (with a another friend's JP address), and another friend in Japan had his laptop sent back here to have it serviced. Also, there's always the chance a non-import one will be bad, too. Luck of the draw, I guess, and perhaps early-adopter woes. lol
Got my replacement on Saturday, been playing with it ever since to see if I could find any further problems. Definitely no circle this time around, and some of the vertical banding I saw on my old phone in the notification screen is gone, but now has some very slight horizontal banding. Not a deal-breaker tho, so this one's staying with me. Also, hard to tell but I think the yellow/dark left screen problem is present, but so slight I can barely detect it if it's there and not a trick of the eye.
Gotta thank Expansys-USA for their great customer service. I'll definitely order from them again.

I would have it exchanged for another if you can. I had mine exchanged, but since I went with the cheap option the whole ordeal took almost a month (slow shipping). My replacement doesn't have a defect, but it's possible I have the yellow tint problem others have been reporting. I don't see it tho, and if it's there it doesn't bother me.

Inaccurate battery percentage...

I have a 910T3 that I slow charge (AC) most of the time. When I see the green light go on, I unplug and see 100%, but after I reboot into TWRP recovery it is usually like 93%. Which one is accurate? I'd prefer the green light to go on when it's really 100%. Thank you.
Also, the stock battery is about 20 months old, and I can use it to about 0%-1% before it shuts off.
You could try reinitializing your battery. However seeing as your battery is that old. You would be better off getting a new one.
What is reinitializing the battery? I really wanted to avoid buying a new battery unless I really had to. I've read people's battery dying at like 25% left, that's when I'd buy a new one.

Above post is correct as your battery is quite old it is probably time for a new one. My old note 4 was very similar to this before the emmc failed in it it would always show different percentages on battery, the phone died before i got to replace battery though

Man I was hoping it wasn't time for a new battery just yet. Also, sorry to hear about your n4. Looks like eventually all of them will die like that soon. I swear this was planned cause the n5 wasn't that great, trying to thin out the n4 herd.

I tried the no5 for a bit, but wasn't really impressed with it. It had it's pros and cons, but I felt the no4 was better overall for my uses. I read others saying pretty much the same thing with sticking with the no4 rather than moving on the no5 cause of no battery or microsd card support etc.
How did you deal with dead batteries out of warranty or did you have both battery issues in the first year?

Lol i bought 3 note 5s and pieced them together with one one good screen and a bad usb port on said screen i swapped the batteries myself I heated the baqck and didnt bust it just scratched it. so i ordered a new back and use small dabs of rubber cement to put it back on.
I do all my own repairs no warranty. i had a verizon tmobile and sprint mother boards luckily I rooted before the usb went out completly and used wifi file transfer and wireless charge for that issue. So much as I now despise Usb ports and no wireless charge on devices.

Wow, I wish I had the skills and patience to do that. I know I'd make things worse and end up paying more in the long run for parts and fixing it. I think that is a huge reason why many won't move onto these newer phones without replaceable batteries.
I swapped out an older, but less used oem no4 battery and will see if it's any better.
So I'm using the older battery and lights up green at 100% (same level as TWRP rec).
But today, my phone just shut off at around 35-39% while in the middle of streaming a short video clip. Only way to turn it back on was to remove then reinsert the battery. Is this normal of dying batteries around the last 1/3 or could this possibly be an unstable kernel issue.
