so i had an 8525 then a touch pro now on an HD2 and i finally am interested in actually keeping my games where they are when i flash roms.
where must i go to save some xml between flashes?
any help on this?
I would be interested in this as well. I know my wife would love to be able to keep her bubble breaker scores on my phone after I flash a new ROM sometimes on Daily basis. I hope some one has some incite.
It's down to the developer(s) who made the game as to how and where and saved information is stored. It could be a file (of any filename) in the same folder as the game, or they may put something in the registry, or it may be in any folder on your device. There is no set format or file location, and it's usually different for every game.
You just need to go looking. I'd suggest finding files in the game folder that just look like they might be saved information. Try renaming it and then run the game again. If your saved info is gone then you've found it! Just rename it back to what it was called and take a backup. You're just going to have to experiment and find them yourself, if you can.
Good luck

I also think I read some program can only be installed to windows\ I Don't know which? programs need to be in which directory or is it all down to the reg enteries or is it dependent on the *.exe & *.dll files
If it is posible to install office mobile to something like \program files\OfficeMobile\ ?, Would there be any benifits for doing this ? or would i be wasting my time ?

Various options here mate (listed in order of user level):
In WM5+ you can choose to install to the Storage Card by default - any programs that cannot be installed here will usually tell you when you try, and ask you to try again in the correct folder.
Go get yourself a copy of a program called Pocket Mechanic and it has an option that lets you move programs to your storage card (it changes all the links/shortcuts and reg entries for you) - it can also move the 'My Documents folder and IE cache, too - saving even more space.
Find a program called CECabManager (30 day trial) which lets you edit the cab files for programs and change their default install folder.
WARNING
ALWAYS backup your device before playing around with this stuff - it's a real P.I.T.A. when you have got yourself almost set up, then you destroy the system, or cause a glitch!
My best advice is to go buy a copy of Spb Clone and install that before you fiddle about! Also, backup your PIM data to Outlook, or with Spb Backup, too! Then you're pretty much safe to do what you want, as you can always go back if all goes tits up!

No idea - anyone?
I think that if you have too little space, you'll be in trouble when some programs run as they may need to use it as RAM or a swap file - I've filled it to within a MB or 2 and it has slowed down the system!
See my post in this thread for how I keep space in my Storage area (at the bottom of the second post)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388249
If you're looking to speed up your system, why not try an overclocking utility?
I've just got Pocket Hack Master - I'm testing it now! I've used Anton's Pocket Mechanic for ages now, and so I'm pretty confident in the quality of the app.

And there is a starter guide here:

Let me know your results!

Don't fancy clocking my CPU realy wanting to know if it's worth the effort of hacking all my *.cab files and OEMs to install into sub folders rather than windows\ Idear been Keeping as little as posible in the windows\ "folder" I could have a sleep some times waiting for file explorer to finish opening windows\ was hopeing that if there's less in windows\ the device my run faster with a smaller directory ??
Thanks

Possibly...
You could always try using Pocket Mechanic!!
Instead of hacking the cabs, you could just use Pocket Mechanic - it will move the programs across to your SD card and change all the reg entries, links, etc. for you!
I find that there are some cabs that really don't like to be hacked! But, if that's the route you want to go down (saves having to do it all again in the future), then CECabManager is definitely the way to go! Pretty pricey software, but gives you a nice 30 day trial period to play with it! Just remember to remove any 'setup.dll's' from the tree in the left-hand window if you change anything - can cause the install to muck up if you don't!
And the best bit of software on the net in my opinion is Spb Clone (god I love Spb software - it's just so good!) - once you get your system looking and working how you want it to, just clone the whole thing on to some spare space on your card and you're safe from any general errors! Use Pocket Mechanic to move all your documents, mail and cache folders onto the SD card and you're even safer - go one step further and get Spb Backup to save teh PIM data onto your SD, too and you get ultimate safety (as long as you remember to save reguarly LoL!):
PIM synced with main PC or onto SD with Spb Backup
Documents, mail and cache on SD
Clone of system on SD
Any screw ups, any dodgy software, ANY problems and you just go back a few days!
SORTED!!

Free even MORE space!!
Found a way to get even more space! Really helpful for me when I want to play certain games, as some of them were refusing to start as they needed more space than I had. I managed to claw back about 8meg, but then I have somewhat overloaded my BAs with about 250 apps/games! )
Using Pocket Mechanic, you can move the AppMgr file from the Windows directory of you BA onto your Storage Card - (the original folder structure will be recreated if you try to install anything new!) - when it's finished, just soft reset your BA and VIOLA! more space in the storage section.
***********NOTE***********
If you want to delete any of your apps - or even install a new version over the top of an old one, you have to move the corresponding folder from the AppMgr folder on your Storage Card back into Windows/ApMgr or the uninstall/reinstall will fail - If you haven't installed anything since you last moved the AppMgr folder, then you will have to create the AppMgr folder before moving the folder of the app you wish to delete.
Have fun,
I am fairly new to this forum and I am sure this has been explain on here once before. But I though this might be a little easier than searching through countless pages of posts. I want to know if there is a way to clear up the program memory. If I could I would like to be able to delete the Office mobile stuff if that would help. Dont see a need for it since I work on macs mostly. Of if there is way to trim it down. At the moment my program memory is 43.87 MB and it says 40.91MB is in use but I only have window media running and only 3MB available. Is there something I can do. What is taking up all memory. Even after a soft reset. The most I have ever seen it go up to is like 14MB and that is just for a while then it begins to rundown. Thanks for you help in advanced.

You would have to flash a ROM without Office Mobile. Look on The Wingster (http://thewingster.com/roms.aspx) and find a ROM that doesn't include Office Mobile. I tell you if it doesn't include it, so it should be fairly easy to identify that.
But going into the registry wouldn't be where you'd delete that stuff. You'd find it in the file explorer, \Windows. I'm not sure if you can delete those files though. I'd just flash one of the numerous ROM's that doesn't include Office Mobile, there's many of them.
Office Mobile is in most cases (there are CABs out there, so that you can install it on stirage card) in the ROM and can't be deleted in an easy way. The File Explorer doesn't delete it. Midnight Commander can delete files, which are in the Main ROM, but only use if you know what you're doing! This program can delete all files - important system files, too!
The most easy way is, as ace already said, to flash a rom without Office Mobile. But be careful and read a lot before you flash a new rom! A broken flash may cause a broken phone!
That is one of my biggest fears is bricking my phone and not being able to bring it back. I am currently running SPB Mobile 3.0 and I like that a lot. That is what I would like to run permanently. Maybe when i upgrade or buy a new phone I will practice on my old wing. Thanks guys for the info!
program mem == application mem
storage mem == files on your device
application mem is used by programming which are running nothing else
storage mem is used by files stored on your device
freeing up app mem don't give more storage and virsa versa
Hi,
I just bought a HTC HD2 (Leo). I've looked around in all the forums and can't find the info I'm looking for plus all the answers to all the other questions I have.
My first question is, how can I save directly to the SD card instead of the phone memory? I've looked everywhere to find an answer to that and I've even contacted the HTC support (in Sweden) but no luck. Does anybody know? Is it possible? I have a ton more questions, but I can only ask one at a time, if i understood the rules correctly.....
Sorry, but what are you trying to save, an example may help. Usually you are asked where you want to save something. Also treat yourself to Resco Explorer at some point. Makes working with files so much easier.
For example, when I send files from my old phone (photos, music etc.) it just saves it on the phone memory. It fills up my phone completely and at once. I had to move the files to the SD memory but everything didn't fit on the phonememory. I don't get any question where I want to save my files. Is there any way (that someone knows about) where I can change that? And thanks for the tip about the download, I will check that out! And I can't whatch divx movies on my phone - any tips?
Hmmm, see I used Windows Media Player to sync music and photos and it gave me the option where to sync to. I guess the problem is if you are going direct from Phone to phone you aren't getting the same level of configuration.
I believe Coreplayer is for DivX.
Free DivX layer here
Thank you for the link!! Been looking for that one. Since I'm new to windowsphones, do you know of any link (tutorial) where I can learn how to install coreplayer (and other apps - like flash and others)?
Things will either come as Install packages that are run from your PC while the device is connected via Activesync or WMDC. Alternatively applications are downloaded as .cab files which you stick somewhere on your storage card and run them from within File Explorer.
Thank you for helping a novice out! I'm gonna try it out!
Hello,
Earlier today, I copied a file named AVATOR.PNG into the \Windows folder of my HTC Touch HD (running Grzegorz10s custom Dusk ROM). The file was meant to replace an existing Avator.png file. (The graphics file is part of a skinned Manila 2.5 installation, but that's beside the point.) I ended up with two separate files in \Windows; one named AVATOR.PNG and the other named Avator.png.
At this point, I can't remove either file, nor can I change their file properties. A few days ago (before doing a task 29 and reflashing the ROM to improve device performance), I could replace the packaged file without problem. The procedure at that time was simply to stop HTC Sense from the list of Home Screen items, remove the read only attribute of Avator.png, and overwrite it with another graphic with the same name.
This time, I apparently didn't pay enough attention to upper and lower case characters.... To view the symptoms and issue, please refer to this YouTube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMQkgENs0DA
Can anybody help me out? I could always reflash the ROM but it seems like too much work for something this "simple."
Thanks,
Svein
ok, you already wrote, you will care for case sentitivity next time, so no lecturing there
these might sound stupid, but have you tried, either renaming AVATOR.png (the one you copied there, if i'm not mistaking) to Avator.png (should either ask to overwrite or at least give another error) or something completely unrelated (to get rid of the conflict)?
can you maybe move that file to, say, my documents\ and delete it there?
the only other things, that would come to mind would be to write a script to delete that one file and run it in startup, before anything else starts, or in a UC environment, where also nearly everything else is stopped, but to be honest, you should rather perform a hard reset, much faster.

Thanks, Tony. Yeah, the case sensitivity is a given - my bad. And I will likely opt for a hard reset. I had *really* looked forward to not having to reconfigure my device again, now that I finally found a ROM that I thoroughly enjoy, but alas... The files are locked (can't move, delete, or change attributes no matter what...)
Googled "UC environment" with both HTC and windows mobile as keywords and came up with Unified Communication. Is that the right way to go or did I just blow my cover and will get tossed outta here as the functional, non-techie user that I just professed to be?
by UC, i was referring to the automatic customizations (formerly known as EXTROM), run after a hard reset or through an automatic installer integrated in many roms, i saw it as XDA_UC or Cloudy AutoInstall. Because the purpose of these automatic customizations are to install settings (mms, internet) or skins and wallpapers, usually done by your carrier, when running this setup, all connections are cut, all apps are shut down and only a basic windows mobile is running (also sense is shut down).
these autoinstallers can use cab or xml or mortscript files, but setting up a mortscript to try and delete a file, when you've never done it before, probably takes longer than hard resetting and setting up your device again. yet, you can make use of autoinstallers to get all your programs up and running, sync with myphone, and all that is left to do is make some basic settings like owner information. usually that should take less than an hour, that way, being much faster than searching solutions for several days
This software worked for me - dublicatefilesdeleter.com
Were market place stores the installer files on our devices? WM 6.5 version.
I am going to be transferring to a new HD2 and the one game that I like to play I cannot longer find in Market Place but I have it installed on my current HD2 ( cracked screen)
So my thinking is find the install file transfer and instal that way.
Any advice?
Also has any one found any program that will do a mirror back up of our phones so that way its easier to transfer from one phone to another, and not have to go through set up again and emails and all that.
Thank you.

There is an app, called DarkCabCatecher (see here) which suposedly can intercept windows market cabs, but it's too late for you now, that your game is gone from the market,
what you could try to do - with no guarantee of success - is to copy:
1. the entire game folder from "program files"
2. any additional game files (if any) from "application data" and/or "my documents"
3. game registry entries (if any)
and copy/import those to your new device, with some bit of luck you might have it running with no problems

you'll certainly find lots of threads on backup apps here, the most popular are: SPB Backup, Sprite Backup and Resco Backup - I recommend some reading before migration though
