WM5 / XP System Restore Theory.

I just noticed, i was looking through the windows folder and i found the filed i wanted to rename to force it to fail loading for a test,
using resco i cleared the readonly flag.
i renamed the file
within 2 seconds the screen refreshed and the original file was there again aswell as the renamed one.
this is similar to xp's prefetch where you can delete system specific files and it will replace them itself, in theory delete the windows folder and it will rebuild itself back to a working system, i went through it on a W2003 Advanced Server course aswell.
if this repairing action could be halted, it would open the devices modding capabilities somewhat.

This is NOT prefetch.
Prefetch is when windows loads some programs into ram ready to run them at boot time. This means its quicker to run word etc when you choose it, so booting takes longer and running word is quicker.
and in theory, if you delete the windows folder, it will be deleted and windows will quickly crash, and not boot again.
It does NOT have the power to re-create copies of deleted files from nowhere!
This magical self generation of windows files is not taught on "W2003 Advanced Server course" or any other, I suggest you ask for your money back.

You are thinking about the System File Checker thingy. On Windows (not on WM5) there is a directory with a copy of all the system files. If you replace or delete a system file then windows picks up on it and restores the file. As Pyrofer said, its not magical and its not prefetch

Pyrofer, I think you should get some facts straight before typing,
as a test for me, check you got system restore running, go into your windows installation folder and MOVE notepad.exe to somewhere else, low and behold notepad.exe reappears in the windows installation folder.

have you been on any computer courses, maybe you should, as its obvious you know very little about modern operating systems, I may have got the prefetch incorrectly named and should have been clearly explained to the now obvious non technical network engineer, but atleast i know what the systems are capable of.
If WM5 is using the extended_rom as the system restore like and this can be stopped, alot of tidying up from the windows folder will make more ram avaliable

Have you done the course? maybe you should and you'll find out yourself that windows is more capable than you think.

System Restore / System Volume Information has nothing to do with the system file protection feature you are describing. They are 2 entirely seperate things. The feature you are actually taking about is described here;

WM5 does not have either of these features, the extended rom only contains OEM cab files and operator settings, WM5 has no advanced features like this at all.
There are a number of possible explanations, rom files cannot be deleted, but some can be masked by another file of the same name, you can then delete or rename the 2nd file exposing the 1st file in rom. I have seen this behaviour in WM2003.

And you agreed with this comment, ie, admitted that in your correction of your post, where you slagged me off, you still got it wrong.
So, in two posts you got them both wrong, in my post i stated a list of correct facts. I never said there was no feature to restore wnidows files, i said that it wasnt prefetch and it wasnt.
ALso, I wasnt "BEFORE SHOOTING PEOPLE DOWN IN FLAMES " and using all caps to shout, I was simply trying to point out your mistakes in a humerous way, obviously my humour went over your head.

WFP ( Windows File Protection ) does exist, ive now researched into it a little and its been around for a while, and you can delete the contents of the windows folder or system32 and it will replace it all (windows o/s related anyway).
What i was implying was that the universal could be using a similar system to this, ie, getting missing files from the rom and putting them back, and like WFP, this comes with an overhead on performance as it has to continually monitor specific folders for the changes.
I know replacing a file with a blank renamed file blocks this from happening but this can cause issues down the line, like replacing the imate today skins, yer renaming txt files and replacing them stops them from being recreated, but you can still choose them in the today skin manager.
Anyway i've had enough caffine now, lets get the Univeral up to the standards that the advertising led us to believe.

O2 Exec set up from new...only for O2

Ok so I bought an XDa Exec.. and like most thought it was going to be great when in truth it sucked..
With the help of all those on here (far to many to mention I now have by far the fastest most stable pDA I have ever had) This got me to thinking that to have all the info and files in one place would maybe help other O2 users so here goes..
What to do..
Firstly If your device has already been running then Hard reset and perform vanilla install.
Press the two -- keys on the keyboard at the same time and reset (yes that the one to the left of the red phone button and the one to the right of the green phone button)
once set up begins go through the screen set up and the device will give you a three second warning when this appears soft reset.
when it boots up you now have vanila install. ie its running but without all the O2 crap but also without your settings.
Next you need to get certain files.

Pocket Mechanic: Download (www.antontomov.com) and install this essential app. You have a few days on trial, and it's necessary for some steps
Ok now using active sync connect to your device and place the following in my documents (anywhere realy I just find I remember that)
*UNI_ext_rom unlocker
*regedit
*O2 connections only cab
*Pocket Mechanic
run both before resetting and also open regedit and change the following

ONCE RESTARTED CONNECT VIA ACTIVE SYNC
you should now be able to see and edit the extended rom. delete all files then unzip the extended rom you downloaded from here and copy all the files across into the folder.
Now hard reset the device
This time allow the extended rom to install ie do not stop at the 3 seconds bit.
NOW browse to my documents and run pocket mechanic.
then run O2 connections only cab
this will then ask you to choose installation choose the bottom one and it will restart your device.
now browse to programs pocket mechanic and follow below
Notification Queue: This can be done later, but it's nice to get familiar with this process whilst your queue is small. Using PM, open the notification queue. You may already (yes!) find some duplicate (yellow icon) sddeamon entries. These seem to replicate during an ActiveSync. You can/must delete all duplicates from time to time. You will also, in future, find some "\.\\Notification.....SCRIPT..." entries. Keep an eye out for these. Most mature within minutes of you finding them, so let them expire. Many are future-dated and tightly back-to-back. These can nearly always (I've never had a regret) be deleted without repercussions. If you don't manage these, they tend to breed, and anyone with XDA experience knows what happens when your queue fills up (failed alarms etc). I'm unclear as to where these come from - undoutedly an app that is not behaving elegantly (regular registration checks etc), and if you follow the steps on this post you should NOT find any - ie the apps here do not seem to be culprits. But, keep an eye open...
Registry cleanup: Again, this can be done later, however you'll soon see the beenfit of doing it now. Using PM, run registry cleaner. You'll get around 6 entries, all of which can safely be deleted. If you did not follow step 1, you may have to examine eahc entry to see if the O2 ROM is messier. The beauty of this step is that from now on, you can safely clean everything that PM finds in the knowledge that it's a leave-behind from an app you installed, and now you can install, de-install, and provided you clean up the directories (easy) you KNOW for sure that you've completely gotten rid of the failed app. Winner!
OK now you can install all the apps you need. I have copied the cab files to the storage card that way if I ever have to hard reset I have everthing, please note I also copied the O2 connections only cab to there.
WELL I am open to comments about this and must stress you do this at your own risk but hell it worked for me and I have as I said the fastest PDA I have ever had.
so over to you guys.. PLEASE note this is in no way my own work it is all thanks to other people on here but hopefully I have put it all in one place..

I like it, but for a new Pocket PC user such as myself. It might be hard to follow some of your instructions. But I like the idea of putting Pocket Mechanic in the ExtROM. I was considering of doing this too, but I want to add MemMaid and HandyMenu with Pocket Mechanic.
This would be a temporary use for the ExtROM for now before Buzzzzzz releases the partition hack. Then, I would rather use the ExtROM as part of my internal memory.

I think you need to WARN PEOPLE CLEARLY THAT DELETING FILES FROM ORIGINAL EXT ROM IS NOT GOOD.
And then let them make up their own mind.
I thought about doing what you posted but tbh its too much bother.
It runs OK as it is. All I use this thing for is phone, streaming radio and anime.
In corporate with no crap OEM stuff I havent tested and normal o2 ext rom it works fine.

I wanna say thanks, had some spare time todaylooking after the sick missus and carried out the procedure, dont know if its running much better than my corp install before but it was good fun and easy to follow

Unknown process slows Jasjar to 10% speed

I had an installation of Odyssey GPS software go horribly awry last night. Ever since then, a process called "Installation" runs with a blank white screen (between top & bottom blue menu bars) after every soft reset, and the machine slows to about 10% speed.
The process is NOT visible in Settings/System/Memory/Running Programs, nor can I find "Installation" on the device. Killing the process via Magic Button (is there an easier way?) speeds the machine up to about 40% speed, but it's still DEAD SLOW, and it will run again after the next reset.
Clearly, something is auto-launching and running, but what tool can I use to find and destroy it? Thanks for any insight! Cheers,

Well, evidently no one else knew any more than I did, so I researched it the pains-taking way (reviewed every file with a modify date/time >= the installation date/time) and determined that the installation had left an alias to Wceload.exe in the \Windows\Startup folder...removing that alias resolved ALL the problems!
Y'all should be ashamed...I'm a Mac guy, and I figgered it out myself! Cheers,

this is a forum though, you need to give it some time, especially as people from loads of different timezones are members. for example, in my timezone your original post was at 10:36pm and your second at 7:24am. you need to give people a chance to wake up!

No, no! You need more Java, you need to drink more coffee so you can keep up with ALL time zones!
Interestingly, the installation of Voice Command (and I notice you have it too) did the SAME THING, and it's fresh (1.6, November 2006) from Micro$loth! Any idea what that file is, why it's put there, and why it locks up my device? Must I expect this problem with EVERY install? (Haven't tried it yet, so don't even know whether it will work....)

The Wceload tool (Wceload.exe) runs on your target device. You typically use this tool to install a .cab file to a location that you select on the target device. Most .cab files are configured to enable the user to select the destination volume where the .cab file will be installed, either \Device or \Storage Card. However, you can choose to suppress the destination volume selection prompt and install the .cab file to a default location, specified in the .inf file used to create the .cab file.
Typically, you do not directly call Wceload. Instead, Wceload is called programmatically by other programs to install .cab files. For example, if you use File Explorer to view and open a .cab file, Shell automatically invokes Wceload for installation of the .cab file.
Why WCELOAD.EXE was put into your Startup folder is anyone's guess, but I'd hazard that it's there to do a "cleanup" of sorts after the first reset.
Why it's still there, and causing a slowdown, I don't know. Perhaps you have some other previously-installed someftware that clogged up the WCELOAD.EXE cleanup-works, and each successive installation is just being held up by that?
Did you reset with the stylus, or a software reset?
Bear in mind, the above are just idle thoughts going through my mind.

I appreciate your insight! I agree it's probably there to clean up; however, the odd thing is that the "swimming in glue" problem shows up at the end of the install, the install appears NOT to complete, and innumerable stylus-induced soft resets still cause "Installation" to launch and produce the glacial slowdown. The file itself lives in \Windows; it's the link to it in the Startup folder that seems to be the key. Perhaps it's it's being called twice...?
There's a a review of the Odyssey GPS software with which I first encountered the problem, and the reviewer ALSO encountered the problem (he didn't identify Wceload.exe as the problem, just said that only a HARD reset fixed it). Meanwhile, I've found one or two other instances of folks having a problem with this file, yet presumably the majority of folks do not. Something to do, perhaps, with the device itself--firmware version or configuration maybe? It's a mystery! Cheers,

MyFavs Disappeared after multiple hard resets...?

I did about 3 hard reset to the phone (for testing purposes), and all the sudden the myfavs program does not appear after I did the hard reset the 4th time, I did the hard reset about 2 more times and it did not restore the myfavs program (it suppose to back to its factory settings)
Now I keep getting "your myfaves contacts have been restored" text message every time time I turn on the phone (keeps pilling up with this same text message)which your suppose to only get once.
under the memory setting; storage & program seems to have the exactly same file size as when i had myfavs before.
What can I do? all I want is the default factory settings.. help me.

Hah! You survived longer than I did with it. I hard reset once just to clean my phone up before I started messing with anything (messing with the ROM, etc.) and the MyFaves app disappeared completely from the little tray bar at the bottom and the Today Screen.
Interestingly if you dig around with the file browser in the \windows\ directory I can see all the MyFav5 related applications, but nothing launches.
I'm tempted to try the RUU but to be honest the MyFaves program just ate a ton of memory and resulted in me calling people on accident when I had the Today Screen Plug-in active. So as long as the plan still gets accounted correctly (read as: I don't get charged for calling my 5 people),I don't really care.
I thought I'd let you know you aren't the only one out there with the exact same problem. I would like a solution but it isn't mission critical for me.

I found a solution to your problem. I'll do some more testing later. For now:
Could you look in your \Windows\ directory of your phone and tell me what "My*" applications and files are listed there? (You might have to make the basic file explorer show all files by using Menu>Show All Files).

All the "My" files that are in windows directory (revised & no file missing or mistyped). The some files are repeated to I placed the filesize next to them.

My5Service.exe is the key application. I wanted to make sure you had all the bits to the MyFaves program. The reason you see duplicate names with different file sizes is that the File Explorer program that you have on your hand held suppresses extensions of files for whatever idea.
Now then to fix your problem you are going to need to edit the registry of your device (I used total commander, the .CAB is in one of the Useful cab threads).
A key is missing from the registry after hard reset. WOO!!
Go to \\registry\\HKLM\init\ (using total commander's akward directory structure style)
You then have to add a new key, I used "Launch94" as I was noticing most of the T-Mo crapware was using the Launch9# series of keys
Then edit the key's data to be: My5Service.exe (Must be spelled correctly)
Basically what you did was add in a registry key that tells windows to load up the MyFaves service at boot so all the my faves apps will initialize properly. Putting My5Service.exe into the \windows\startup\ folder doesn't work (I tried it initially).
Soft reset and the phone will act wonky for a second as it is refreshing itself, don't panic. A box popped up saying "MyFaves display set to ON" and all was well at that point.
Then, since you want factory default I'd just remove Total Commander using the add/remove programs feature.

I made an attemp to reformat the phone again, and myfavs appeared. Funny How I never managed to get that total commander for this phone. Lol im an experience user with registries (now gonna experiment with the register editor an tweak the phone to make phone faster and remove useless I don't need)

Ah well no insult to your ability or experience was meant. I try to be as specific in my write ups as possible so others who might have the same problem can understand the solution, regardless of ability. Tends to make my life at work a lot easier when I do that so it's become a bit of a habit.
Glad it worked for ya and I'm actually surprised it survived another format. But hey all it says is there is some glitchy code in the re-install portion T-Mo has built.

By the way, let me know what tweaks you try. I'd be interested in them myself.

Good seeing people help each other out. The speed tweaks are everywhere, but to remove things you have to recook and flash your phone. (Alternatively, you can flash one of the many available ROMs our cooks have already made or made a custom one based on my own through the link on my signature.)

need some help uninstalling apps

i have been trolling around xda for weeks and finally here is my first post..
im having some problems getting rid of the software that came bundled with the tmous hd2. when i go to settings(sense)->applications->remove programs, i see JUST the b&n ereader listed there.
i seem to have irretrievably lost my sd card and i suspect some of the bundled software was preinstalled on the sd card itself. i was able to spot the rest (like slacker, telenav, etc.) in the program files of my device memory.
the problems are that:
1) the start menu is still cluttered with icons of apps that dont exist (due to lost sd card). nothing happens when i run them.
2) even the apps that do exist (like telenav - installed on my device memory), i dont know how to uninstall.
i really need some way to clean up my phone... any way to solve the above problems?

p.s.:
i suspect that the b&n ereader is listed in 'remove programs' because i ran that software and updated it over wifi - which led to a fresh install.
my rom is 2.13 if thats of any use...

The thorough way is to use a cooked ROM. But if you don't want to go that way, you can go though and comb through the phone memory>windows and the start menu folders and delete stuff that belong to the apps (but be careful about what you delete, you don't want to delete important system stuff)

i thought of doing that. but drawing a parallel from windows (PC), what you are suggesting is that i should delete all program folders & shortcuts manually instead of using the control panel->add/remove option.
but that is sure to leave behind orphaned registry entries, dlls etc. just like in windows (PC)? and any windows(PC) user knows that that isnt a very pretty way of doing things...

it will leave the registry entries. I have made a lite rom that you can use if you don't want any traces of the programs on your device. look in my signature

Silenced, the catch is that it's not possible to remove apps that are baked into the stock ROM through any regular means (i.e. the add/remove dialog). In your case the best thing is to just clean up + organize your /windows/start menu folder...you can delete or move any of the ".lnk" files in there as they're just shortcuts to the same thing in the /windows folder. Just remember that if you move something that's attached to a quicklink on your home tab, you'll have to dump the quicklink and recreate it after moving the .lnk file.

hmm you're right... i remember that even a hard reset i did yesterday didnt change the state of these apps.
apps stored in rom arent going to make any difference to the phone's performance anyway. so ill just follow the cleanup method you all suggest for now... i have had this phone for just about 24 hours now. its my first killer phone (i upgraded from nokia e65) and am in no state of mind to start flashing cooked roms yet
i wonder if there are any registry cleaners for windows CE.

Yes, MemMaid has a registry cleaning function/option...there may be others, but that's the one I know.
As for all the stuff you'll need to learn for your HD2, make sure you read the guide below (if you haven't already):
