4G CONNECTIONS ON YOUR CURRENT PHONE. NOW! MAYBE
Posted by Simon Walker on 17th March 2010
via ANDROIDSPIN.com
Well isn’t this just the week for wild rumors and tipsters.
We just received an anonymous tip informing us some of the carriers have been testing 3G/4G connectivity using existing cell phones that we already own. Apparently the carriers have piggy backed a different signal on the existing cell towers and this signal may be available for us to use.
We have no idea how valid this rumor is but we’ll be doing more investigating to see what we can find out so stay tuned for any updates. I sure don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of getting a 4G connection on my G1 and Nexus.
If you’ve heard anything, please leave us a comment.

I am already working on implementing this into my ROM, it still is intermittent but I definitely can confirm a 4g connection.

are you talking 3.5G aka HSPA 7.2?
Its gonna be a good 6 months to a year before most of us even get the HSPA tower upgrades.
This is exciting!

Ben,
Where are you located?
I know they tested random towers (Baltimore) and have been rolling it out to some areas already... but I haven't heard any hype pointing to LA getting it yet.

I can confirm this in the Seattle area. we just launched hspa 7.2 upgrade in some networks and at the nok in snoqulmie BUT its not launched yet maybe you could gain intermittent access but not all the time. plus it would waste battery switching back and forth just an fyi might work really well downtown though.....
this was one of the reasons for the radio upgrade. and some of the phones on tmobiles network already has the hardware needed to access hspa
so what exactly is going on? My phone currently support 3.5G or HSDPA

in all actuality they are expanding there 3g hspa (high speed packet access) witch theoretically can reach speeds of 48 mbps but we will be moving to LTE before we reach those speeds. plus LTE will be cheaper
This is definitely something very interesting, I would love to run my nexus one at 4G.

Dunno, but I'm getting 10,000. Although some tests pull 6-7mb/s.... It ranges from 6-10mb/s. Can't wait for the next speed update! I'll drop my comcast cable if this thing breaks 20.

Usually it is because you went somewhere else and your phone hasn't locked on to you since you got back. For example, I'll travel to Dallas (I'm in Houston) and I'll update weatherbug to the Dallas area but if I go back to Houston and don't update my location via weatherbug or something it will show me 30 miles from the Dallas server.
Look at that...his 3g is faster than my wifi in my house...

Not true.
The current network limitation is 14.4 IIRC but if the network goes 21/24 or whatever it is... the G2 will go right along with it. Hence the HSPA+ moniker they are touting ever so much.

Nope. HSPA+ supports up to 21Mbps at present, but the chip in the G2 does a max of 14.4Mbps, as T-Mobile has stated since months before the launch (even before the G2 was announced they said it would be limited to 14.4). I suppose it is conceivable that a firmware upgrade would lift that limit, but I would not hold your breath.

Check under "special features." HSDPA 14.4 is supported. Nothing higher.
And I'm pretty sure that it's a hardware limitation of the chipset, so I don't think any type of firmware upgrade could increase that limit. I'm not 100% sure, though.
I hardly see the need for anything higher than 14.4 Mbps on a mobile phone anyway.

Old news that I've probably mentioned 6 times since posting in this very section. Project Leapfrog was the codename for Sprint's Network Vision. I'm just patiently waiting for Sprint/Clearwire to officially announce LTE is a go, so I could retire this topic. Sprint's ****ty 3G network will be taken care of by this same project they've mentioned since December.

Isn't wimax to LTE as simple as a change in software? I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the wimax chips in our evos could in theory pick up the low frequency signal of LTE. Then again, I have no idea just reposting what I've heard said elsewhere.

On the tower side, the hardware used in the base-stations can apparently be updated very readily -- swapping some circuit boards, and doing a software update, to make them LTE ready.
As to our phones, there is some disagreement. The LTE spec allows carriers to use frequencies in the range of those that our phones can already receive. Whether the hardware/software combination exists to let our phones receive LTE data, is up to debate. Many say no, but based on the spec, a Wimax antenna operating in the either the 800Mhz, 1.6Ghz or 2Ghz range can receive the signals (see Uplink and Downlink bands here: http://www.radio-electronics.com/in...ong-term-evolution/lte-frequency-spectrum.php), but can the phone discriminate and use what it receives? Who knows...
Great move if you ask me. And I don't know about anyone else but the places I've lived and traveling the Midwest parts of the south and here in the west coast sprints 3g has been my favorite. I also have an att and T-Mobile phone for business.... now talk about ****ty coverage lol.

Check the dev forum, we can now sbf just the radio from the telstra 1.4.2 which unlocks hsupa. I've averaged about 100 for ping and 2 down/1.4 up in Connecticut. Other users have reported better increases as well as some with less, it will still depend on your area. Flashing the sbf is quick and easy (took me about 10 min to dl and flash) and I haven't had any other issues. Good luck.
Edit: 1.4.2 radio is not our "4g" its just hsupa. Thanks for the correction.

That's not exactly true. The Telstra radio is only for HSUPA. I get the impression that the op is talking more about download speed, but I could be wrong.
I believe I heard somewhere that they were working on the backhaul and it would be sometime before the end of the year. I don't think I have seen anything reliable about that though, mostly just hearsay and whatnot.

you are correct, it has to come with increase backhaul at the cell sites, which has only been done in a few cities across the US. HSUPA has nothing to do with 4G. HSUPA is the upload component of HSPA, which most cell sites are on now (HSUPA is blocked on the Inspire and Atrix but not on the iPhone or Nexus One, etc). They will only be 4G or HSPA+ when increased backhaul is in place.

HSPA does not equal HSPA+.
The HSUPA update unlocks 3g speed, which is HSPA.
Without the HSUPA we are basically on crippled 3g.
HSPA+, or '4g' (more like 3.5g) will come when AT&T finally gets around to deploying the enhanced backhaul to your particular city or region.

that is better than what I get! When I was in chicago a few months ago I saw the same speeds. your download speeds are much greater than my 3G speeds at 1.5-2 Mbps here in Denver. I assume that once more backhaul is in place across the country, that 5.5 number will go up. Also, I think I read somewhere on ATT's site that 6Mbps down would be typical of their 4G deployed this year. let me see if I can find where that is stated, I could be making it up

Question:
Just how fast is AT&T 4G?
Answer:
With enhanced backhaul AT&T is seeing network speeds up to approximately 6 Mbps. Actual speeds experienced will vary and depend on several factors, including location, device, environment, and capacity. LTE is expected to deliver even faster speeds.
Note: 4G speeds require a 4G device and are delivered when HSPA+ technology is combined with enhanced backhaul. 4G speeds are available in select cities with availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment. For information on currently available 4G markets, see 4G Speed from AT&T and select the Coverage map.

Why do you assume that? I would assume the opposite really, though I would hope it won't be noticeable. I would assume once a tower is connected it is connected and that the more towers you connect the less bandwidth there is left to share.

I assume this because once they get the enhanced backhaul in place, they can continue to "enhance" said backhaul and not let it get stagnant. of course, that may take a while. but, this is just an assumption and has no scientific backing
Wait, so this update coming out this month isn't even supposed to bring '4G' (HSPA+)? It's only supposed to bring us to full '3G', and later this year we get the full '4G'?
I'd be happy with just having 3g installed where I am!

This is a why I am so happy about the AT&T and T-Mobile merger. Regardless of it going through and no matter how long it drags on, part of it was a big roaming agreement. I am being optimistic that includes 4G because my area has T-Mobile's 21mb speed. I could handle that.

i got a call from my buddy from sprint and he said in 20 days sprint is gonna buy and get verizons 4gLTE
anyone know if this is true or not.
i know that the nexus is getting a update hopefully this week that is suppose to boost 4g and wifi connection. so thats a bit of a hint
what you guys know about this
I have heard that they were going to be using LightSquared possibly. Not sure if that is VZWs LTE provider, but since Sprint uses VZWs 3G towers, I can't see why they won't strike a roaming contract with them again.

An LTE roll out for Sprint will happen.
It's been talked about that Sprint may embrace both LTE and Wimax standards.
However, it's not an instant process and a phone would have to have an LTE radio to use the LTE band.

so this isn't something we should be expecting in the 20 days i heard, or even soon for that matter
1 more thing, if sprint does get LTE, do they lose the wimax if they decide to no longer be with ClearWire?

In 20 days some sort of deal might go down, or they might start some sort of project, but there's no way they can instantly switch and certainly not in such a short timeframe.
IF Sprint drops Clearwire then yes, Wimax would not work with Sprint phones.
It's been suggested that Sprint may go to quadband phones though.
Who knows. I'm not even sure Sprint does, which is part of the problem.

Well in the link he posted above, the article said that they plan on making a Sprint-Clearwire-LightSquared combination.
its a stretch to make it happen but its possible

I wouldn't doubt it.
Sounds like a good idea actually.
And it coincides with the idea that Sprint might just run both standards along side CDMA (which would eventually be phased out, eventually.)
Both LTE and Wimax have uses.
Why shouldn't both technologies be used for what they do best?

ok just so i got this right and don't start rambling about things idk
LTE is 4g alone or is it Both 4g and Wimax.
cause if thats the case then why hold onto Clearwires Wimax?

Neither are true "4g"
Both are just different technology standards (well not even standards lol).
Its just like wireless a, b, g or n.
Just different "standards" for wirelessly transfering data.

In 2009, the ITU-R organization specified the IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced) requirements for 4G standards, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Basically, 1 Gbit/s when not moving, 100mbit/s when moving and VOIP.
Everything runs through data.
Texting, Voice as well.
lte is awesome, if you use your phone as it comes out of box. ask any thunderbolt owner what happens when you throw an aosp rom on top of the lte radio...

It has nothing to do with LTE and all to do with the spectrum used by Verizon.
Wimax would be just as "awesome" if at the same frequency.
