newb here, my names chris and im from hagerstown MD im 20 and i just ordered a t mobile wing....just switched over from the sidekick lx....
cant wait for my wing to get here tomorrow. First off i have a few questions about modding my wing, ive tried to understand all the faqs and posts but im just not catching on. my goals are to get a custom layout with a custom pic for my backround with a diff. clock and ringtones from mp3s. possibly a mario game if possible. if anyone could walk me thru this id be very greatfull, thanks chris. p.s. i only have a 128mb sd card will i need larger?
You got alot to look forward to. As for games/emulation on the Herald is below par in my opinion. Games designed for Windows Mobile work great though. As for customization there is tons to do. First consider changing your rom. Plenty of options to choose from here. You also might want to invest in a little research on the benefits of HardSPL. If you wish to converse feel free to message me. I am in no way an expert but I have plenty of time to share what I have learned reading here if you want.
im really excited about getting it. ive checked out the rom stuff but i still dont really understand how it all works.....if you could point me in the right direction as to how i should do this in order from most important to least that would be great....i just know as of now i have to download, unzip, drag to phone, and manually start the programs....id just like to know for sure so i dont brick my phone. ive seen some accept donations for helpin out and id donate into a paypal accound or a sd card or whatever if someone cared to lay this all out for me and link me what im looking for etc. like i said i just want a custom layout or toolbar and ringers off my sd and pictures of my bike as backround....id like a mario game or somethin so when im bored at work i have a kill time
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326655&highlight=overclock
that helped me out alot
ok i think ive figured out alot from the forums now ive downloaded a morphgear emulator where can i get games for it and will i be ok using stock rom or will i need to reflash due to file sizes?

All I have to say, is there is a TON of information on this website to read through. I think I read and did some research for about 2-3 weeks before I actually hard spl'd my phone. I would recommend using the uspl method to flash first. It's safer so if you screw up, you don't brick your device. Once you start understanding more, you can Hard spl and then it's a lot easier to flash to different roms. That way you can try out all the roms out there to see which you like best. I used the uspl method and flashed to Open Touch v 3.0 biggy which I LOVED!
well i have my wing in hand and it rocks....unfortunately after ive decided to just do small mods first such as .cab etc. i realised i need active sync and my super retarded vista wont let me download anything grrrrrrr.
ok got my sync workin yesssssssss now i just need to figure out which file to store the cab files.....anywhere should be fine theoretically....

Yeah, what I do, is I made a folder called Cab Files on my sd card. I copy all cab files I want to install there. I also installed this cab file that keeps all your cab files in that folder after you install them. That way, when you flash to a different rom, you already have all your favorite cab files in that folder. There is no need to copy them from your computer to your phone. (When you usually install a cab file from your phone, the original cab file gets deleted) I included the cab file to keep your files.
sweet man now everything is up and runnin now im gonna figure out this clock glow and im already debating switching roms.....i cant get page pool mod to work soooo

Yeah, I used the clock glow thing too. All you do is copy all the files into your windows directory. It will ask you to overwrite them. Then, just do a soft reset, and presto!
i cant over write the original home files to glow the clock.....im not messin with it any more.....ill start looking into roms now

Ah, yeah...trust me on this one, you def. want to check out some different roms though. I would look into using the uspl method first though. It's safer than hard spl'ing, and it's relatively easy to flash to. Look up Open touch 3.0. There is a ton of info on how to flash to it. If you have any questions, just private message me.
no need for add/remove programs here! simply go to start-settings-today-items, uncheck touchflo, hit ok. go to system tab, remove programs, and remove the 2d! no extra programs needed. it may take a few minutes to uninstall but i have not had the uninstall fail on me yet.
Failed for me last week. Yep, tried what you said. 6.1 tilt. It WAS the newest release at the time.
Just a heads up.

Hmm. You say "no need for add/remove programs" but then "go to system tab, remove programs".
Also, please don't start threads unless you're contributing. This should have either been posted in the Manilla 2d thread, or not at all. We all know how to remove apps. I know your new, but maybe reading the forum rules wouldn't hurt.
SkTool is work.
Please englighten me - why does the 2d **** not work on non-htc devices as advertised in the main manila 2d thread?

Because Manilla is an HTC creation and only works on HTC phones. It's like putting the Mac OS on a PC. Apple made it for Macs, and it only works for Macs

why do you want sh... on your device ? Pure pleasure
Removing Manila
although its gr8 to have manila on HTC touch (i thank da xda guys), but if at all u wanna remove it, try removing it by SKtools.. google sktools and u'll find it. its pretty easy to uninstall but u cant uninstall thru phone's native "remove programs"
I'm not asking whether it works or not, I got that obviously already, I just wanted to know why. And thank You but I think the PC/Mac parallel is a bit exaggerated cos HTC and ASUS for example are not that different like ASUS and iPhone.
The reason I referred to Manila 2D as **** was exactly the reason that it requires specifically a HTC device. Therefore, it's **** for me as I can't do anything with it owning an ASUS device. And I just wanted to know why.

Because HTC locked it to their devices and specific files are needed that do not work on non HTC phones.
OK, thanks for a clear and concrete reply.
This thing isn't removing from my Kaiser...I've followed all instructions but everytime I try and remove, it gets to the end and then says ...
"It wasn't fully uninstalled, do you want to remove from the Remove Programs list?"
I've tried rebooting, then trying again, taking it out of the Today Items list, and still no joy - how do I get this pointless pile of crap off my phone!!!!!!!!!
Appreciate your help!

Thought that'd be the case, fortunately Vodafone are giving me a new phone tomorrow anyway beacuse my phone keeps receiving MMS (the same ones) over and over again, they reckon its the phones fault!!
What a waste of time this Manilla 2D is, worst more pointless thing I've ever installed!!
somone lock this thread and delete it. as its going no were.
@ ashleyhall : your phone was recieving the msgs due to a program you installed. a hard reset will fix your msgs problem and manila being on your phone. good day.

Ahhh ok, Vodafone didn't have a clue, checked the network, changed my price plan (how pointless!), my phones acknowledging an MMS being read, but not Delivered - lets see if the new phone cures the problem, then I'll shove the same apps back onto it.
I need a break from WM6, considering Android...but a little scared!!
mods please close thread

You may remove certain apps like officemobile if you cook your own custom ROM, but not I.E., since it is an integral part of the OS. To know how to cook ROMs, there is a stickey by ramersonw in the Gene Upgrading Section.
I'm wondering if various included applications such as the Bing widget, Blockbuster Mobile, B&N eReader, the Gameloft game demos, and so on... could be removed? SAFELY, of course.
They just create what seems to be (and probably is) unnecessary system bulk. Not to mention, those game demos are completely hideous, and they obscure the potentially "uncluttered" Start Menu applications tray that could be had.
Could someone perhaps offer a bit of insight, maybe even enlighten me a little bit on this topic? Thanks.

They can be removed in a cooked ROM, not sure if it is safe for a user to try and remove the files though. Remove one of the wrong files and you have a problem. Most of my ROMS I remove all of this stuff for the same reasons you mentioned.
i just did. everything's fine, except I accidentally deleted opera too, but thats easy to be cabbed back.
Thanks for shedding some light on this topic fellas. Great feedback. But yeah, I kind of figured that the icons could be removed from the Start Menu tray, the program files could be deleted, (with a system warning - of course) and it seems that even after that things SHOULD BE just fine.
From what I understand though... T-Mobile has made sure that some of these third-party apps cannot be deleted. For instance, I'd like to know if TeleNav and MobiTV can be rid of as well. Seriously, once freeing OUR version of the HTC HD2 of all this corporate junk and clutter from T-Mobile partnerships... it'll be very, very quick. (As if it's NOT already...)

there is nothing T-Mobile has put into this rom that can not be removed when cooking. it is just a pain to find where they have implemented all the crap, some times is in more then one place the same change.
Shortcuts will be under \Windows\Start menu\Programs, related program files will be under \Program Files, shouldnt cause any issues deleting them.

Very true. However, would you suggest that the average Windows Mobile user attempt to dump, remove various things, then throw it all together, OR... simply use Resco File Explorer to remove the unwanted programs, system files, etc.?
I used to develop for Android, but this stuff is an entirely different ball game to me. So, I'm trying to learn the YES and NO basics here. Thanks.

cooking is the best way to remove things you do not want. a user can delete all the crap they want but this will not give them more storage (files cook in can not be deleted just hidden) but rater just hide things they do not want to see. just remember that if you delete a program, make sure nothing else uses it.

Alright, thanks guys. Always appreciated for a bit of feedback.
THIS THREAD CAN BE CLOSED NOW... unless other T-Mobile USA HD2 users find this in any way, shape, or form helpful to continue. Thanks again.

They can be reomoved but the registry has to be edited to remove some of the keys.Do one at a time and make sure the phone works ok for a few days before going on to the next.
you can do it but i wouldnt reconmmend it unless u know what ur doin but will say the each program is spidered in to the device the best sure way is to upgrade to a cooked rom but i must say but..............
WARNING U CAN CHANGE UR ROM BUT DOING SO WILL VOID UR WARRENTY WITH TMOBILE AND CAN AND WILL SPEND ANYWHERE FROM 50 TO 100 US CURENCY DOLLARS ON HAVING HTC DOWNGRADE UR DEVICE BACK TO ITS SHIPPED STATE BUT YES IT CAN BE DONE AND THERE OFFICE IS EITHER TEXAS OR CALIFORNIA I FORGET AND CAN TAKE UPTO 2WEEKS BUT I WILL SAY IT WORTH THE RISK JUST READ BEFORE U MOD........
ive deleted everything but telenav and mobitv, and no issues
Even though these programs don't show up in the Remove applications, they are able to be removed manually to release the storage--if you know where the files are located. (icons and shortcuts are easily removed).
However, whenever you do a hardware reset, they will come back, since they are part of the ROM which they could not be removed there.
Or is the stock roms.... GOOD?
I just upgraded from an ATT Tilt, and that thing required a new rom for ANY sort of useability. The new roms improved the look, feel, speed, useability, and battery life greatly of the Tilt.
So I get my new Tmo HD2, and play with it for a day or two, and its good! Right out of the box (2.10)! Im thinkin too myself "If its THIS good out of the box, think of how good a new ROM would be!" and HardSPL/load up a rom. Play with it, and it just lacks a good feel. Things just dont play as well with each other. No cool animations, no performance boost, missing a lot of cool apps like the Flashlight. I just didnt like it. Tried another new rom, again, didnt feel right. I even tried SPB Mobile Shell (LOVED it on the Tilt) and again, didnt feel solid or complete.
I then went to a stock rom again (2.13) and LOVED it! Everything just feels right on the stock ROM for me! Am I going crazy, or is the stock rom good?
A few things I would like to do. First, find a way of killing bloatware and Icons, like the stupid Transformers icon (deleted the movies 2nd day) and uninstalling blockbuster and a few other useless apps and demo games. I cant figure it out without going to a ROM.
Is there a way to get rid of the animated splash screen when booting?
Thanks in advace from a VERY happy HD2 user. Iphones have NOTHING on this thing!
One thing is you cannot "Uninstall" apps that are burnt to the ROM, you can delete their Icons from /Windows/Start Menu/programs and delete the files from program files, but you cannot remove them, and they will be right back after a hard reset ....
Only way to get them to go away really is a custom rom ....
Try Energy Reference it is pretty close to stock ...
also some of the "Feel" issues you are seeing might be the HD2 comes with WinMO 6.5 alot of the roms are the 6.5.x series, and a lot of things changed ...
p.s. And it is "Just You"

and that there is the biggest benefit of the cooked roms. (Appart from enhanced stability and speed, and eye candy / tweaks, , but you're right, the difference isn't anywhere near as noticeable as on any other phone)
As for 'it didnt have flashlight', , anything the roms have can be added as cabs. Have a browse of the regular leo 'themes and apps' section. (Dont worry, its only radios/roms that you have to be carefull with, cabs and tweaks will all work on all leos.)
So you find yourself a nice fast stable cooked rom, with all the bloat removed, then add back teh stuff you want.
Sounds like a lot of work, and im lazy. Maybe I can pay someone to cook me up a nice ROM?
