HD2 will NOT get an update to WP7 - confirmed at MIX10! - HD2 General

UPDATE!! Looks like this was not true and there will be no WP7 for HD2 at all.
There is still hope, you can help deciphering & hacking WP7 image:

(if you really want WP7S on your beloved HD2, for me this whole new OS looks more like EPIC FAIL)
Hi,
I have just got an 'inside' information from a person close to MIX10 and I think it is pretty legitimate.
HD2 is going to get WP7 update, but in a bit different way that you may think. Soon after the conference MS will distribute unfinished, pre-release WP7 image that will be intended for devlopers, so they can test their apps on real hardware before proper devices are available (in the end of the year). Obviously because HD2 is the only device at the moment - and will be for a long time - that meets hardware requirements of WP7, this image will be intended for it.
It is still unclear if final, 'production' WP7 version will be released for HD2 when new OS is launched, but even if that is not the case, I am sure that chiefs will be able to somehow mix both versions together
According to my source this will be announced very, very soon at MIX10!

We can only hope i suppose =/

Well, as I said, my 'source' seems to be pretty legitimate, but I agree. Title changed.

Makes pretty good sense, actually. It fits with all the 'wait for MIX10' answers to questions about the HD2 right after the WP7 announcement in Barcelona.

lol WP7S SUX BIG TIME...
no multitask.. what a joke microsoft

May just be me but the WP7 posts are getting a little bit boring and shouldn't they be in there Windows Phone 7 Series forum? Rather than having multi threads on essentially the same things.

Plus we get to buy all our apps . . . again.

Let's hope for a port anyway, whether official or not...

I'd like to believe you, but the MS devs were raving about the emulator that comes with the Phone developer tools... I dunno. Seems iffy but the existence of an emulator does not preclude the HD2 from getting a 'MIX' build - after all, you need to have the emulator around for a variety of reasons, namely the HD2 won't be available forever

im also watching mix10 and as far as i remember i heared somthing like "all of you who will have an wp7s device at the end of the conference".
could be the special dev-phone, as some folks guess, but i think an hd2 rom is the easiest and the most logical solution.
So i "guess" its possible. and by the way, i excpected silverlight for mobile for months and now its there and i like it.

Well these are the hardware specs, we don't meet the 'flash' space unless it counts SD.
I can't find any info on the Snapdragon GPU specs to see whether its DX9 or not!

Those hardware specs are basically the snapdragon specs with some ancillary stuff. Snapdragon includes the AMD z430, based on the 360s XENOS. Most confirmed WP7 devices are using snapdragon thus I expect the z430 will not be left out as far as directx9 support goes. It supports openGL es 2.0 so it has a unified pixel and vertex arch. I really don't think we are going to get an official port. But based on those specs, a hacked port doesn't seem unlikely at all.
PS does anyone know the hardware touch point limit on the HD2s digitizer?

these specifications are higher than hd2 specifications (impossible port)

Hmm, so these are the official specs?
From what I have understood while searching info about the Nexus One touchscreen issue, HTC has used the ClearPad 2000 touchscreens in their devices till now, which have only 2 finger limit. The ClearPad 3000 has a 10 fingers limit.
I don't know if the HD2 has the same ClearPad 2000 or not, but if it does not, that is one thing missing right? (correct me please if I am not right, but I think it says 4 finger is the minimum requirement)
Second, it says 'camera button required' from what I think to have seen. We do not have that.
Third, 8 GB flash... again, don't know about that.
Anyway, looks like it's MIX10 and we still do not have an official answer on if the HD2 will get 7 Series OS or not. I'm fine with it... and I think my future Desire is smiling as well
Anyway, 7 Series looks good. They did give us some nice new info about the OS.

Leo or Nokia N900

N900 is not Symbian but Maemo (Linux)
i am actualy considering the N900 , i love HTC as a company ,
but i am very dissapointed from the HTC speed .
and because of that , the Leo is a device with strong processor , and a very bad OS.
if he had the N900 OS , or android , that was nice .
anyway , N900 for me !
and someone should tell HTC to stop sell a good device with bad OS !
Leo looks as though it could be a great device, but Windows Mobile 6.5 is just really starting to show its age and bulkiness(slow even on a Snapdragon). HTC also gimped it by giving it a 65k screen - what's the point of having such a large screen if everything looks like crap on it?
I love my Touch HD, but compared to my friend's 3GS it doesn't have many strong points(and compared to the n900 it loses on all accounts). I'd still wait for more announcement concerning the Xperia X3 before making my final choice.
N900 is interesting but the "Landscape Only" is ugly... Linux OS makes it like PC and this is good but CPU/RAM/Battery moving it?
I have Touch HD and I don't think to buy Leo because no real improvements but not N900 too
I'm waiting for something in future
D'rath
I'm with you D'rath on this one as Archos just announced their 4.3 Inch Phone Tablet outfitted with a 1Ghz Hummingbird and android. February 2010 is going to be an interesting month for sure!
I'l be waiting for Tegra/WinMo 7 before i change my HD
when i saw the leo video review i decided to keep my hd leo camera still sucks only improvement is the processor but in the review it is not also so fast don't differ allot the only issue with hd is that it will not get wm6.5 officially when talking about memo5 in nokia n900 it has not allot of applications and not good support for games and applications

It was probably gimped because WM 6.5 only supports 65k colors... still.
The appeal of getting a enormous screen and a much faster processor in Leo is tempting. N900 is interesting, but being a completely new OS think it's best to wait and see. The X3 / SE Rachel also looks tasty, but again too few details to make it a sure-buy.
If nuerom can get overclocking working stablely on the MSM 720x devices I think I'll stay on HD for until end of next year at least
I got for the Leo, I will buy it when it hit the streets.
N900 is bulky compared to leo (because the hardward qwerty keyboard), Leo seems to be faster and more polished in the picture viewer and video playback. Not to mention the multitouch of Leo, wich can become a standard for WM7 and future high end devices.
So for leo:
+Multitouch
+4.3" screen
+I like touchflo
+I love TouchFlo3d
-Dont like WM 6.5 (perhaps with some tweking start menu can be set to work like 6.1,need to read further about this)
...and for Nokia:
+hardware qwerty
-Not symbian (how many aplicacions exist for that varely unused "new" os?)
-Not like the interface
I don't think I would spend that much money on a Htc Leo, and only get a litle faster, a bigger screen and multi touch. I would rather keep my HD, which can do almost anything that Leo can.
If i buy a new phone it has to be much better than the HD, the HD can do almost anything (with a leo rom, its even much better)
The N900 looks like a nice phone. A qwerty keyboard is nice, and I like on the first sight the new Linux os. But I will wait for a while till I get a new device.
n900 for me - I've had guts-full of winmo, and android just doesnt do it for me (dont really like the interface or the architecture tbh).
And btw to the people who say they 'love' these companies because of x, y or z - get real lol. the only time I can imagine someone loving a company is if they either work for that company and they are being paid to say it or they have developed some twisted form of Stockholm syndrome around their employer... if you don't fit into either of these categories, you are a fanboi idiot both are capitalist scumbag companies nearly as bad as apple they cant help it, its just how the world works.
as for the actual devices the n900 interests me greatly, being the smallest posix compliant device ever (afaik?). to 'tarded joe public that probably doesnt mean anything, but to a coder/geek its fantastic!
andriod imo is hacky and not very mmmm.. viable(?) for a range of application areas (e.g. video players?) - is it true that all the apps for android have to be written in java? for real? why?
to me, the n900 looks to be suffering from early run hw problems - these im told should be fixed in the 2nd and 3rd runs. as for the software, anything that is currently not working im very sure will be working very soon - simply due to the community around the device and the openness of the platform - this alone sets the n900 apart from everything else - including android (which although linux based, is very different) - a great example of this fact is the fmradio app (http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/fmradio/).
if i've offended you with my opinion in this post, you may consider yourself offended - i don't care!
so, come January, ill be picking up an n900 its the only path of progression for me. btw, if im wrong on anything here please correct me.

I know people complain about HTC all the time (myself included) but they do produce nice phones. My main concern is that they create new phones all the time with no real improvement between them. I think you'll find the next release (or 2-3 after) will be the device worth moving to from the HD.
Also, I'm addicted like many other to flashing (phones ), customizing and tweaking my HD as well as finding new fixes, helping others and constantly being online at XDA. If I was to get the N900 I would lose all this.....................
i'm moving at the moment from the touch pro 2 to n900. why? because as someone posted above im sick of sloweliness of my device (altough latest AthineOS was excellent )
im also a flashing n customizing addict, and on every single device from htc ive had, after installing mod's the OS was simply slowing down.. even changing the wallpaper was a pain in the a**(especially in Manila- u know what i mean ).
im not saying that htc is crap or something, but n900 seems to better fit my needs now.
Getting it in couple days n we'll se was it worth going back to nokia ( god save me from that filthy n sh*tty Symbian) or not.
Surely i'll be missing htc in some way

Official WinMo 6.5.3 for Topaz?

Hi.
Is there any info about HTC releasing official 6.5.3 update for Topaz?
I wouldn't be counting on it. Topaz came with 6.1 and they provided an upgrade to 6.5. Usually, one upgrade is about all you get.

hmm wondering about the pure getting 6.5.3 though .. it started with 6.5.1
BUT!!!!!! WinMo 7.... Just wait and you'll see
This information is more than intuition.......
I have no doubt that WM7 will be heavier than 6.5, which is already the limit for what the D2 can handle. So, maybe there will be some kind chef willing to cook it for D2, but will it be acceptable for every day use?

I think the complete opposite. The iphone has set a very high bar. It works very smoothly and that too with a processor under 1 Ghz and no obscene amounts of RAM. The WinMo7 has to at the very least match it, if not beat it.

This can be done pretty easily. They just have to go without multitasking functionality. But do you really want that?
I don't ever have Solitaire, Opera, File Explorer, and Word Mobile open at one time. It's a battery-powered mobile device with limited memory and a power-frugal processor.
Yes, I do want that. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I want to to that as well as the iPhone does it. Only I don't want it to come with a 2 year £40 per month contract, like the iPhone does

Very good point! I most certainly don't want that!
They could also make limited multitasking functionaly, I mean that they could limit the number of programs that can be opened at once, and when I bought my Topaz in the specifications it was clearly mentioned that I will get a free upgrade to WM7, so I think that we will have an official upgrade in the future.

are you sure? never seen that in any advert. maybe orange did some marketing tricks. as everybody pointed out, HTC never releases 2 generations of ROMs for same device. anyway, by the time WM 7 will be out and stable, people will start looking at another bunch of devices to upgrade. I for sure am not going to keep my device longer than the warranty.
It could be a marketing thing.
i'm fairly sure windows 7 has defined hardware specs, and the TD2 comes nowhere near them. Of the current phones, only the HD2 does. And that would mean there would definitley be no WM7 on the TD2

I doubt that, I do think that TD2 will run WM7 just fine, you underestimate the power of the "tool" you're using
No Update
Its most unlikely there will be an official update to windows phone 7.
Hardware requirements (source HTC Russia) state the device has to have:
Demand TD2
•1Ghz processor NO
•3.6 inch WVGA display NO
•G-sensor and compas NO
•8GB internal memory NO
•5MP camera YES
So there will be no official update.
Problably it will be ported to our device by the community.
Mmmm...
I have to agree... if we get an official WM7 update for TD2, I'll gladly eat my device and post the video on YouTube for all to see! However, the spec requirement is high, but if anyone has noticed, Windows 7 uses far less resources than Vista. If it follows that WM7 will follow this trend, may be our 'old' devices will be able to handle the new OS?
I would imagine the chasis specs were seeing are not so much for the OS to run on, but so MS can go to developers, especially games developers and say to them that WM7 will be running on this hardware as a minimum so target your games for this.
Currently the WM6 devices are over a broad range fo processor speeds, memory, resoloutions and differing addons (GPS, Accelerometer, graphics chips, compass, capacitive screen) that it is impossible to get the kind of one program runs on all that you get in the iphone community.
You could cook WM7 to run on this hardware, but I can't see it going beyond proof of concept as a lot of the software will be pitched at higher resources and the lack of compass/capacative screen may hold back some feateures.
Besides, by the time it hits the streets... why would I want to still be using a TD2. I'll want a TD3 at that point ;-)

It can already only run 32 processes at once, and a large amount of those are already taken.
I've questioned someone from HTC and he said that it hasn't been discussed if there will be future ROM development for WM7, so we will have to wait and see.
Lost the plot here, what about 6.5.3 official.....
I would like the ability to move the widgets around

More Likely To Happen First....WP7 or Android?

I'm sorry HD2 lovers but although Windows OS is pretty custimizable its CLEARLY a VERY OLD OS that I just cant get that into. So my question is this and your answers really depend on whether I decide to keep the phone or not. What is more Likely to happen first
-Fully Working WP7
-Semi Working Android(ie: broken wifi, bluetooth, camera etc...)
Hum! its hard to say... But I am sure that when either of those come out, its going to be a P.O.S.
I wouldn't keep my hopes up on either, but im thinking WP7 might be the easier port.
If you really don't like WM6.5, return it and get an android device. By the time WP7 is out there will likely be much better hardware out with it officially installed.
Qualcomm has dual core and 1.5ghz snapdragons in the pipeline for later this year, im sure there will be many WP7 phones with them.
On the other hand if you're a WM fan like myself, stick with the HD2 because its probably the best hardware that WM will ever be officially released on.
It would be interesting to see HTC do an official android release for the HD2. There are no licensing issues why they couldn't, just have to spend some time to do it, or at least give the enthusiast community the needed drivers and other know how to get it working so we're not reinventing the wheel. you know they've probably already got it working in shop.

This is the 3rd time i'e seen this exact same question posted. Either one will be at least 6 months-1 year away.... maybe more.... so if you don't like WinMo, I suggest getting a different phone. Personally, I think WinMo is the best OS out there for mobile devices and I am glad to have what will probably be the best WinMo phone of all time since there won't be many more winmo phones made.
My bad. You guys are right. I saw the news for the port but didn't follow up about it being fake.
I still think WP7 will be ported first.
With all the Android Superphones coming out (EVO [sprint], Droid X, Incredible [verizon], Galaxy S [t-mobile], Captivate [ATT]), its easier to buy a new device than use a ported ROM on the HD2.
I think we're more likely to see a windows 7 Shell similiar to how HTC Sense is on the HD2 before any fully working windows phone 7 ports are done. Although the hardware on the HD2 is pretty much as impressive as anything available now the fact is that, just as with computer parts it will be considered "not fast enough" when windows 7 phones are actually released.
I'm 26 years old and had my first pc in 1994. it was a packard bell and ran at 600 Mhz with 128MB or ram and a 40 GB HD. My HD2 is faster than my first pc ever was and it is about 20x smaller. Anyone else think about these sort of things and really marvel at the pace technology is moving?
The wife and I were in the food store the other day waiting in line behind some lady paying for groceries with a check. My wife was *****ing to me that people are crazy that still carry around paper checkbooks. I told her that when we're older and probably holding up a line with our surgically implanted RFID chips to pay for groceries, some youngsters will be complaining about us not using retinal scans so we can be done quicker..LOL.

So what is the Next BIG THING after Leo HD2?

Leo HD2 was a BIG hit and generated the most popular and posted forum here at XDA. That was until the big BOOM when HTC, Samsung, et al started to introduce the endless variants of the same device (or mediocre upgrade with a slightly different shell) resulting today with the overly populated XDA today.
HD2 is the only device here on XDA with the most Subforum: WM, Android, Ubuntu, WP7, and MeeGo.
My question is what and when is the next “BIG THING?” Or has it already happened? Was it an EVO3D? Where are all the new DEVELOPERS flocking to? I am NOT talking about Chefs; I am talking about people who make contributions to the future of a device.
Come on guys, get real, what other device have had this potential and strong development community! I mean, HD2 got Gingerbread way before official ROMs even rolled out to other native android devices.
So, what and when is the next “BIG THING?”

Thanks guys for making this phone EPIC! XDA made HD2 full fill it's potential.
The real answere is: HD2
End of game for all...
i think the hd2 phenomenon happened due to the following favorable circumstances:
- at the time of its launch it was (and still is) the best wm device and also had superior hardware compared to anything else on the market (for example, the best android device was the htc hero...) - this attracted a large number of developers and users alike
- the htc android phones coming afterwards shared almost the same hardware (nexus one, desire) - this (+ the fact that android is open source) made things much easier for developers and we had the 1st succesful android port very quickly. from then on, the development exploded...
- similarily, the htc hd7 shares similar hardware to our hd2 and the developers managed to port also wp7
- the involvement of cotulla & dft - all the important steps in the development bare their name: hspl, porting android, magldr, porting wp7
regarding a possible succesor to the throne ruled by our hd2, i must admit i'm rather skeptical. the market is very diversified now with many great devices to choose which divides the developers too much...
however, my next phone will be a dual core (most probably htc or samsung) but i will wait for dft to see which model they choose...
the next big thing? hmm good question, would it be too much to ask for a 4.2" device with many finger multi touch, 32 bit display, 1024MB ROM 1024MB RAM ill keep the 5MP camera but i want propper optics on it, perhaps a 28mm or 32mm lense 12MP is pointless without optics to match, not too fussed about the CPU or GPU as the HD2 does a damn good job so whatever CPU is around, oh and something that quite easy to SPL unlock, it would need to run WM and WP too
So im guessing that just an HD2+ then
If i ever win the lottery, im gonna see how much HTC would charge to make me one
in all seriousness, there isnt anything that would significantly upshow the HD2 just now, the HD7 does a good job but its essentially the same thing, something new will need to be released, my guess is whatever the successor to the HD7 is will take the crown, so long as its unlockable
Im still waiting on my dream phone.. non of the new phones out there impress me as much as the hd2 did when it came out thats why im still stuck with my lovely hd2. What we need is manufactures to stop doing small steps (only draining our wallets) we need:
1. flexible transparent screens (its been created over 5yrs ago)
2. 8megapixel cam or higher
3. Samsung Xynos processor (2GHz) or something similar.
4.Windows phone 7 os (once its fully developed) we all know it needs to mature more to be the king.
I hope its a Nokia WP7 device...
HTC has gone into garbage mode...having produced 30 phones with similar specs and designs...with dumbdroid mainly.
I really hope its a Nokia...mainly because I'm absolutely tired of HTC's poor reception, poor battery life, crappy imaging lenses and terrible customer support...all things Nokia excels at.
Next big thing is Windows 8 Arm Edition on the HD2.

HTC Costomer service has always treated me well. Three diff times i've been pleased with it. And its not as though samsung phones get great batt life. friend had a Vibrant and the batt life was terrible. Kind of a lemon in that regard (and some others) and yet i know other Samsung phones are better. What, are you going to buy an LG? haha. our beloved suffers from a rediculously huge screen and thats partially to blame. That and the fact most people forget, on WM this thing got great batt life. And thats what it was made for. With these new processors, things should get better. Got to agree with you on the camera thing though
Definitely waiting on the Eternity Thing is beastly!!!!
Or a nice Nokia in Q4 sounds good.
The next big thing is already there. It's called the Galaxy S II.
Fastest Proc, Most RAM, Fastest GPU, thinnest/lightest phone, best touch input sensor, most internal Memory, biggest/longest lasting battery, screen only rivalled by the HTC Sensation.
This of course doesnt mean it will become as big as the HD2 but it has the most potential at the moment.
As for the HD2: Nobody at the time could predict that the HD2 would become such a huge modding succes. If Microsoft had decided to not base their WP7 on the same CPU, there would be no WP7 on this device.
If HTC hadn't brought the Desire/N1 with near-indentical hardware specs, Android on this thing would be a lot less functional. Meego and Ubuntu are nice (The letter being functional on virtually any mid/high-end android device at the moment and the former being dead at any rate)
At the moment the relevant OSes remain (and will remain) Android, iOS and WP7. Since we are never going to see an iOS port to anything, you should look for a device that is based on a CPU that WP7.5 (or Mango) is optimized for (hopefully MS will upgrade from this dated proc with pathetic 3D capabilities to something more comparable to the Samsung Exynos or Apple A5).
I havent followed the rumor mill but if there is a tendency to a specific proc that is available to all producers, then the chance of getting WP7 and Android in the newest version running on any device would be on one that has this new hardware based. Since there is no such device that I am aware of right now, I would vote for the Android High-ends (the modders love the SGSII and Sensation and they will remain top of the line for at least 10 months)
I very much like this post and totally agree but you cant possible think because you have awesome specs on a phone your gonna have the next hd2...if you remember the hd2 was nice but software wise it was absolutely terrible...especially because everyone wanted android on the hardware but even then nobody knew the potential the phone would have. If back then when the phone first dropped, compared to other phone with better specs like the evo...nobody would have said..."this is the next big phone that will forever change the face of modding/rooting a phone". The community came together and made advances on that phone which were once thought impossible....all the roms started slow and sluggish...lagging until they were perfected by gifted and talented individuals. No make a long story short....u can't tell what a phone will be like based one specs...its all about the participation of devs and a lot of feedback. Trial and error.....time and dedication.

There most likely won't be another big thing or successor to the HD2 and this is for a few reasons.
1st, the HD2 was supposed to be this awesome Windows Mobile phone that bridged the gap from WinMo to WP7. Well when they decided not to allow an upgrade path to WP7 that didn't happen. And a lot of people just weren't happy with WinMo running so horribly on such an obviously awesome phone. So a need or a demand was created and filled by devs allowing us to port Android to our HD2s.
With the market the way it is now, that's not likely to happen with so many choices available.
You've got awesome specced phones like the Evo3D, HTC Sensation, Samsung Android, Motorola Android phones. Even the new WP7 devices being released are awesome! So no one is really breaking down doors to port Android to an awesome device that runs suck ass software because most phones being released have good software. In my opinion, WP7 is awesome software that just needs a boost so if I had a phone that had it I wouldn't port anything to the device running it.
Secondly, no other phone right now can run multiple OS' like the HD2 can. Which phone runs WinMo, Android, WP7, Ubuntu, and possibly Meego? AND it can dual boot ROMs too! None and we aren't likely to see it attempted on as huge a scale as it was on the HD2! The HD2 will be the last of its kind a memento that proves to the huge corporations that if you don't do it right, someone else will and they will do it better lol.
Sad tho, cause my HD2 opened up a new world and when I move on to my next device I'm gonna miss porting ROMs on a day to day basis or on whim. I'll miss switching from Sense to a Vanilla ROM to a cyanogen ROM to WP7...

In my mind, the next big thing are devices like the Motorola Atrix, where the processing power and storage is phone based but can dock with a laptop workstation or tablet. Now that would be my ideal handset...

Seriously, i think that the next "big thing" will be the first htc with unlocked bootlader as htc said...
maybe HTC Eternity????
Never again will there be a phone.. in this and the next decade (perhaps forever?) that allowed such versatility between completely different platforms..
Personally - next big thing is ...
For me I think that the Samsung Galaxy S2 ... should be the next thing to leap to ... it is fantastic ... I have an HD2 but if i lose it or it goes bad ... I will defo buy one of them things .... It's got a 1.5 Ghz dual core cpu ..amoled2 screen ..... cameras at the front and at the back ... full framerate playback and ultra slim .... good quality camera ... battery drain is really discrete .... and the Gfx are fast and good .. runs android like a charm ... Definitely it will be a fav with all devs ...

Very nice!

Its on the move but is Windows phone 8 [Apollo] possible for our old HD2?

well our phone has just been amazing knowing that the past three years there have been major developments improving our phone's ability. Thanks to the devs android, WP7, ubuntu is now possible (and meego well almost) but MS has just relased windows phone 8 for development and it has many potential features like native code and external slot features, mango apps are even compatible..
So now I wonder (what DFT have to say about this) could this new OS be possibly ported in our device? what do you guys think?
They are saying that existing phones won't be upgraded...are there real technical limitations in play here? If the new "shared core" of Win8/Windows Phone 8 just doesn't support the hardware we have, then I'm not sure there is much hope. Maybe an expert can weigh in here...
At a minimum we can probably get WP7.8, but that's literally the new start screen and nothing else from what I gather.
Apparently all WP7 devices will be upgraded. If this is true we might see a WP8 ROM.

Microsoft said that's not the case.
I feel sorry for those who brought the Lumia 900 for $700ish (aud) which just got released here (Australia) and now they can't get Apollo.
old windows phones will get an upgrade but its called 7.8 not 8. i'm guessing there's a hardware limitation because there really isn't any other reason to screw over all the current windows phone owners specially lumia, but then again Microsoft said wp7 is not compatible with hd2 ...

Essentially WP7.8 will be WP8 minus the hardware-specific features such as the multi-core support and the NFC things. From what I've heard it will have exactly the same UI everywhere else.
based on the specs of HTC Rio, I could say WP8 is possible for our phones!

It will just be like a WP8 theme for WP7. WP7.8 won't run any WP8 apps at all.

HTC Rio uses a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor while the HD2 only has a Snapdragon S1. I would worry that the WP8 user experience might not be so good on the old Snapdragon S1. However, I think the bigger obstacle is WP8 is supposed to require DirectX10 while the HD2 GPU is an Adreno 200 which only supports DirectX9.

yeah that will be the problem but I think there will be ways to circumvent it just like the touch drivers for the WP7. In general I see it with minor set backs in speed but it would be functional

That would be great, I guess I will hold onto my HD2 until someone like Cotulla says it can or can not be done.
Not to break your heart but to clear your mind
Well here's the evidence we needed for HD2

So to some of the users that still have questions about Windows Phone 8 on our HD2:
There are no drivers for the windows 8 kernel available. Also Secure Boot for the WinRT kernel might pose issues
We only made it this far because WP7 is based on the WinCE kernel (as Windows Mobile was), the similairity with the HTC HD7 and beta drivers were maybe developed for platform development/testing purposes back in 2009/2010
After sticking with the HD2 for about 3 years and actively updating, I think a Windows 8 device will be my next upgrade.
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish!

the verdict:
WP7.8 Possible
WP8: not possible
any helpful intellectual inputs on this guys?
To add some hope though
check this out! look at paragraph 3!
Microsoft’s senior marketing manager for Windows Phone, Greg Sullivan, says that it's not impossible to port WP8 on older devices, but the cost of doing that would be very high and the benefit very little

he's not a mod but a long time HD2 experienced user. You can check his profile out but for me he seems legit. Anyway the good thing is there still is hope
I see. Kid1988 might know his stuff, and I mean no offense to him when I say this, but I will wait till the HD2 guru master Cotulla says WP8 is a no-go. After all, he was the one that brought WP7 to the HD2 and knows how to write custom SPLs and bootloaders.

This alone would be reason to port WP8. I guess if there will be MicroSD support, this would mean that the cards wouldn't be encrypted, and would make things for WP+SD Android users much, much easier. There wouldn't be so much partitioning and stuff involved.
