yea give it a day or so to familiarize itself with your system and towers etc. i dont see how all these people are getting terrible results from it....and its not that hard to go back just ruu
You see I have tried to use the RUU wizard set up thru fresh. When I tried it I got an error.
there was a post a few days ago with the old radios in an update.zip format that you could flash from recovery, have you tried using that to downgrade yet?
Please read the following threads before trying anything. That way you are fully prepared.

People told me to flash the original radio in the same manner as the updated radio in nandroid. It did not work. Then they told me to RUU, that bricked or now semi-bricked my phone. I just think you should be prepared before you do anything. Running the RUU apparently does not work as well as some people think it does.

So I am gonna take it from you man. I am pretty sure someone out there over the rainbow will make one to degrade the radio. i will settle with the radio for now, since I have no choice, well I already tried to use the RUU wizard, good thing I made a nandroid backup.
raadio flash is different than a regular flash nandroid wont get ya back to an older one

The problem is you are trying to use nandroid to flash an update.zip.
The radio will come as an update.zip format. Flash it like you would a new rom through recovery.
Nandroid does nothing for radio flashing. You can literally fry the phone's motherboard by flashing the wrong radio, I would know seeing as I did it to my first phone. lol

Maybe I shouldnt really do anything with the radio and just live it out with 2.1. I kinda of scared to fry or brick anything.

how did making a nandroid recovery save you from bricking your phone??
okay so on the thread with the radios that Avalaunchmods posted, there was an error in the way he had his stock radio.img flash onto the phone. i'm attaching a signed stock radio that should flash correctly.
it SHOULD work. i don't see why it wouldn't work, because it is a CDMA radio and what it would do is just rewrite the old radio over the new radio. so i don't see a problem with this bricking any phones. but i don't take any liability if something goes wrong.
Just verify that you have the correct radio, and make sure it is coming from the CDMA Hero section and not the GSM section.
The real danger comes from flashing a GSM radio onto a CDMA hero. If you do this you will watch your phone kill itself.
I believe the radio was posted, though you could get it out of the RUU I think? Then you'd just need to request someone sign the zip and use it as an update.zip from recovery.
i took that radio.img from Avalaunchmod's thread. the radio that he got that out of was from the RUU, so yes, this is definitely a CDMA radio and its from the RUU.

First, my problem started with either updating to the new JFv1.43 recovery, or flashing the new SPL from Haykuro.
Symptoms:
1. Everytime I flash a new ROM, wipe or no wipe, I come back stuck at the T-Mobile G1 boot screen. The only way I've found to get through is to take out battery and boot into ADB (the Camera + Power screen) and "fastboot flash boot boot.img". This almost always work.
2. Nandroid stopped working. Nandroid always errors during the process of backing up, and I'd only have splash1.img and splash2.img in the nandroid folder of my SD card. Kind of want to try reflashing the JFv1.43, or even go back to 1.42 (can't find) for troubleshooting. Also not sure if this would affect the new SPL and cause a brick.
3. "Insufficient storage available" with Dude's and Cyanogen's builds. I'm not sure if this one is related to recovery or SPL. This might be caused by past attempts at doing apps2sd (I've done both symlink and unionfs).
Anyways, losing Nandroid has lost me a lot of time with trying out new ROM's, I'd really like to get it fixed. The boot stuck is a nuisance, but much less troublesome than losing Nandroid.
Its the SPL.

I'm not positive (***so dont do this without researching***) but i think it would be possible to flash to a different one ( i mean, you flashed another SPL over the original one, right? ).
There is a "mega-thread" that has information on all the SPL's and their features/updates. If the info is anywhere, it's prob in there. Search in the Dev forum.

I could be wrong, but the key is not flashing an older RADIO with the newer spl.
You should still be able to go back to hardspl with no issues.

I have flashed from the New H SPL to the HardSPL i originally had on the phone when I found out people were having trouble with the SPL. I install the NEW SPL again to run Hero, but you CAN flash it back to the older SPL I would recomend HARDSPL though.
*not responsible if this doesn't work but I was able to do this without any trouble. Was just a bit nerve racking.
i am 99% sure the above post is correct, don't flash a different radio, but you can flash another SPL right over the Haykuro SPL. i would double check that as there is a 1% chance it will totally screw your phone and i don't wanna be the guy that told you to do something that bricked your phone, but it should work. just to be safe you should make sure splash1 is the t-mo g1 screen so if it stops you can call t-mo
i flashed from the latest haykuro spl 1.33.2005 , to the original t-mobile spl HBOOT-0.95.0000. I fastbooted and it was showing the original spl installed.
Okay, I've searched and searched for someone else with this problem and just cannot find any threads. I've been flashing roms from these forums for a while now, starting with JF 1.30 and have never had any problems. However, I have not been able to flash anything newer than JF's 1.50 since I installed it. I've tried multiple hero builds, ion, even cm's build of 1.5. The only thing that'll get past the G1 screen is jf1.5. I have the latest radio and spl. I have my sd partitioned with about 650mb on the ext2. I have NO IDEA why they aren't working. Any ideas?
when all else fails, unroot and root again.

same here, i had to do it once early on my rooting days.
oh how i've learned since then...
My neighbor, he's running Hero, and I have actually both tried using my nph file to drop my phone back down to 1.29, then rerooted it, reinstalled the new radio and spl, and still, couldn't flash anything newer than JF1.5. Perhaps I am doomed to use cupcake until my phone dies.

Then there must be something wrong with the things you download. I always redownload files when im rooting or flashing recovery images or SPL's.
My phone shut off and has not been able to turn since. I tried flashing a ROM and didnt relive after that. Please help.
What do you mean it doesn't turn on? What happens when you hold the power button?
it doesn't boot ...it is as if it were dead
Check to make sure it is charged and the battery is installed properly. I have had the battery so dead that it didnt even vibrate to indicate booting.
Yeah. Let it sit on the charger for a few minutes, make sure battery is in right and everything is plugged.
Check for amber LED, let it charge a few minutes, then try again and do it like that every couple minutes. If nothing still, buy a new battery or exchange it.
nothing so far ...ive scheduled an appointment to repair ...i know they wont be able to do anything for this phone. I wanted to see if I can avoid not having to give up my HTC hero and deal with a replacement phone for a while.
ummmm, how did this happen?
you may not want to say for fear of bashing but I promise I won't, as far as I've seen it takes a very unique set of circumstances to actually brick these things
EDIT: my prediction: you tried to flash a GSM rom onto it
so when attempting to get the download file for the Eclair 2.1v1.5 rom it stated that the radio posted is recommended. Prior to flashing the radio i did a nandroid backup and then I flashed the radio. During the flash screen (open box to phone image) it blacked out after about 20 seconds.

How does a radio flash stop a phone from turning on?
Isn't the whole point of a recovery mode, to be able to "recover" if something goes wrong.
Shame on you whitewidows, for bashing him... The whole reason people get things working is because of trail and error.
If anything he helped us all by confirming that a wrong radio flash will completely ruin your recovery console, possibly bootloader, and (maybe even some actual hardware).
Hopefully this doesn't discourage users from trying to hack our radio.
Hi,
Already posted part of the situation in Amon_RA's recovery thread but neither of the answers there seem to solve my problems. Decided to post it here since the problem seems to involve aspects other than the recovery itself.
Here's the complete situation:
Had problems with RA recovery freezes since the start and with different versions. I could (and can) enter recovery mode (v1.6.2), scroll down the options but after 15 seconds the recovery just freezes and reboots every single time. Checked the version (H) and the MD5, they where all correct. Tried cm-recovery-1.4-32A and it seems to work fine but when I flash a ROM (1.6) I have similar problems with the ROM (freeze+reboot in "touch droid setup"). Curiously I flashed my hero 2.0.5 (1.5) and had no problems...
Tried booting the latest RA recovery trough fast-boot and it worked fine the first two times I did it (scrolled down the options for like 10 minutes and it didn't freeze). After that it did not work and got the freezes+rebooting problem back again. Tried ADB, Flash-rec and flashed the recovery but got the freeze+reboot problem once again. Re-checked the version and MD5 and they where all correct.
Why does this happen? Any clues?
Thanks for your help!
I'm kind of lost here...Could it be a radio or SPL problem? Should I re-flash/update it? I never had problems with the stock ROM so this situation is really odd...
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!
strange... try some random methods here lol (I don't know if they'll work though but it can't hurt)
First, try flashing an ENG SPL, see if that makes a diff
If that fails, try flashing a whole new ROM/RADIO/SPL
for example: Since you're a 32A user, I believe you can flash the 6.35.x radio and the 1.76.2007 SPL and then use the hero recovery. Test out a rom on the new radio for like a day and try out the recovery. See if that freezes! (This doesn't really accomplish much though because even if it doesn't freeze, i think you'll wanna go back to the old radio to try out other roms lol. You risk bricking your phone if you don't understand this stuff so don't do it if that's the case)
But anyways, I'm a bit confused. What rom are u using?

So you can use the recovery fine, until you flash a rom? So when you flash a rom, your recovery beings to freeze. But when you flash a different rom, your recovery works fine? Weird. Sounds like a problem when you're flashing a rom...
I have no idea dude but what I would do if I was in your situation:
1) Flash ENG SPL, something like 1.33.0010 (double check everything, i dont like advising people to play with their spl/radio so dont just take my word)
2) load up recovery and give it a try! if all that fails...
3) I'd backup your phone via nandroid in recovery (i pray that it doesn't freeze lol)
4) Wipe wipe wipe
5) Go into fastboot, fastboot erase system -w and then try another rom! And if the rom is good, then go back to your old one. Try to find out what the prob is.
It appears that you're able to flash roms still even with your recovery freezing (so weird) so I dunno. Just give it a try I guess lol
very weird indeed.... question.. does this do this when plugged in as well as on battery? ive heard of some really weird issues with bad batteries....

it could be hardware...

Hi again,
Still didn't mess with SPL and Radio. I'm still afraid I'll brick the phone..However yesterday tried a few simple things like using another sd card or entering recovery while plugged in. These two things seem to influence the behavior of the latest Amon_RA recovery but don't solve my problem completely. Example: When I enter recovery using the original SD card (2gb) the recovery would freeze within 20 secs max. Using another SD card (128mb) most of the times it would take longer to freeze (4 or 5 minutes). Sometimes it would not freeze at all. Although this seemed to influence what happened it wasn't constant and could not find a pattern. The same with the phone plugged into computer. Sometimes it helped. One thing is certain: with the original SD card and unplugged from the computer the recovery freezes within 20 secs every single time.
With the CM 1.4 recovery never had any freeze problems. It seems to work great while in recovery mode. The problem is after a flash a ROM I have freeze problems with the ROM itself (tried different ROM's, CM, SuperD, etc and got the same freeze problem). The only Rom that worked fine was myhero 2.0.5.
This is a very strange situation and I'm starting to think that this could be hardware..
Would that be a SD card problem?
try using another SD card and see if the problem still occurs
I am having exactly the same problem, did you ever find a solution?
Went from a fully updated magic 32A (1.76.0009H) now i'm at 1.76.0008
UPDATE: I just found that the hero recovery works (I would post link but xda doesn't allow new users to do that) however it may still be necessary to downgrade radio and spl
I had also same problem. My device is Magic 32A radio 6.35. Solution was to reflash recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img.
i tried to make a thread in the Q&A section but it has not been appearing.. twice!
my question -
currently on 5.08 radio and want to experiement/try out 5.12 radio
if i do not like it and want to go back to 5.08 can i simply just fastboot flash the 5.08 radio back?
or is there additional steps i must take to downgrade the radio?
if i am unable to downgrade back to 5.08 i dont think i want to flash 5.12 tbh....
thanks in advance!
You can flash whichever radio you want. There is no "upgrade" or "downgrade", the system doesn't check versions.
Funny you mention that. I went from 5.12 back to 5.08 a few days ago. I had a small issue with wifi not reconnecting, and had to disable/enable wifi to reconnect each time.
This is on MIUI GB. Radio 5.08 doesn't experience this issue for me.
Interesting to hear if you experience this too on 5.12

WiFi has nothing to do with radio, so whatever it was that you did in addition to flashing radio - like rebooting - more likely cured your phone.
Flashing an unsigned radio will brick your phone RIGHT?
I had been flashing ROMs, Recoveries, HBOOTs but haven't tried Radios
I want to experiment just don't want to have a BRICK

That's why it's best to use fastboot to flash the radio.
baseballfanz is correct
do it thru fastboot, if you are not familiar with fastboot, become familiar before you do it
nandroid
get the radio images from the wiki
i never saw any diff btw .08 and .12
put the radio.img in your adb/fastboot folder on pc, usually tools or platform-tools
fastboot flash radio radio.img where radio.img is exact name of the image file
i check this by right clicking the on the radio.img i put in the tools folder and clicking on properties. it will show you the exact name and i copy/paste it into command window

I had already tried multiple reboots, fix permissions etc to no avail. It was only when I changed radio that wifi reconnect worked.

No differences IMO. I was on 5.12 for a long time but went with 5.08 as that's the "official" radio version that came out with GB. Performance wise no different.
