Bricked cdma htc hero after ruu 1.56 - Hero CDMA General

i ran the ruu update when i got my phone and went to 90 percent then error 110 missing file,
now it only goes to fastboot menu with no options to select from, ive tried the ruu from sdk and same error,
so if any help i can get from you guys would be greatly appreciated,
ive looked all over the google.com and have come up with no luck on how to fix this ,
i know its like the radio image that doesnt flash or something, also in sdk i cant adb to recognize device.
please help ive been to geekfor.me and no help there,
if it helps the phone is a with google stamp on it. well lets see how this thread goes from here.

Try re-downloading the ruu.
What rom were you coming from?

I haven't found anyone that has a solution to the 110 file error when flashing the RUU...
I as well as a few other gave up hope and have all since gotten replacement Heros.
The main crux of the issue is that the fastboot you are booting into will not allow adb commands and hence will never allow the RUU to install completely.
Hate to say it, but figure out a way to exchange the phone for a new one, you are stuck in an infinite loop of 110 errors...
R

Hi again R.
Yes, error 110 is a nasty one indeed. It's the reason I am hesitant to root Hero #2. I still have my 110'd Hero and am (so far unsuccessfully) hacking it back to health.
@turboek99: Yes, what rom did you have installed? Mine was modaco 2.2

I already re-rooted both of my phones again and am playing with ROMs, LOL so although I know what the concerns are with RUU, I'm just hoping that I can not mess things up so much that a RUU would be my only choice. My only issue is I cannot deal with the phone being as slow as it was and without Root and a ROM, I feel like I'd rather go get something else... So I have no choice but to play with fire...
The way I see it, if I can keeep these stable long enough and something finally does happen, I only hope the Supersonic is out and I an "forced" to upgrade

Didnt know that about ruu...sucks.
Just noticed ur screenname, turboed b16?..u take it out to the tracks or run it in the streets?.....ima take a guess and say u stay in socal?lol

I'll probably brick my phone intentionally when the Supersonic or the next-gen Sprint android comes out so I have an excuse to upgrade.

Anyway... back on topic. Try flashing recovery image from ADB like this:
Code:
adb remount
It should then say remount succeded.
Code:
adb push recovery.img /sdcard
adb shell
cd /sdcard
flash_image recovery recovery.img
reboot recovery
and then flash a custom ROM. I actually made that mistake when I first rooted.

there in lies the problem, after you get the 110 error you have no more ADB. it boots into a fastboot that does not have ADB support
so the real problem is how to re-enable ADB commands, then reflashing should be simple and straight-forward...

Well, you can flash in fastboot... but that never worked for me.

I'm on this same boat and have been trying to find a solution. Luckily I just recently got my phone and am planning on taking it in. I did seem to find a thread where someone fixed this but they didn't say how... I messaged the guy who helped that person out but he hadn't replied yet. Forum dot ppcgeeks dot com/showthread.php?t=111587 Hope it is ok to post the link otherwise I apologize. I would really like to get my hero fixed if possible. I have a sprint hero 1.56.651.2 and used the signed RUU that's on a few threads. At first, I kept getting the connection error while trying to do the RUU, I wish I would have stopped here. But I finally got the RUU to detect and start. it was at around 85% when it moved on to the next thing after user settings I believe and it gave me the ERROR[110]. I've tried the holding volume down and powering on and many other keys but no luck.

finally got it replaced
well i got a replacement phone so kinda happy now, too bad it s a refurb unit as opposed to the brand new unit i f'ked up before. well off to what i was when i fked up my other one.haha

Heh, ditto. I got a brand spanken new one though. This time I made a backup before I soiled it.

I think I bricked my nexus (my fault) please help!

Hello all,
I think I may have bricked my nexus one. It is completely my fault for attempting things that I knew little about, so flame away But after the flaming, if anyone is willing to help I would be sooooo thankfull...
I successfully rooted my phone following the instructions on this page: (all links edited with a double asterisk as I don't believe I can post links)
h**p://theunlockr.com/2010/01/02/how-to-root-the-nexus-one/
Then successfully installed cyanogenmod (which is awesome!) following this page:
h**p://theunlockr.com/2010/01/08/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-nexus-one/
All was well, I even got the modaco desire rom up and running, and was happily switching back and forth using the recovery screen. I had nand backups for specific setups, etc.
Then I decided it would be good to know how to go back to stock, and found this page:
h**p://**w.androidspin.com/2010/05/06/guide-unrooting-your-nexus-one-its-like-it-never-happened-almost/
I followed the instructions to the letter (I think) except for erasing userdata (it said "failed: remote not allowed"). I thought that things would be ok, since I'd recently wiped, so I followed the page till the end.
The phone rebooted, and I got the original nexus boot animation - but it's in an endless loop! What's worse, it that now when I try to go to the bootloader or recovery mode, I get the exclamation triangle with the little android.
Is there any way through a command prompt (or other method) that I can fix this? I tried to re-flash the RA recovery image through the command prompt, but the response was, "waiting for device."
ANYTHING that anyone can suggest to help, I would be so thankful! I've been loving the nexus, and hate to think that I crippled it
Thanks in advance,
Randy
I doubt its bricked.
Noticed you didnt mention that fast boot doesnt work? (power button+trackball) try it.
Once you get to fastboot you can flash any ROM back. (fastboot flash **** commands from a command shell)
Did you ever perform a Nand Backup from Recovery?
It's not bricked, the only way to brick is to interrupt power when flashing a Radio image
Connect phone to PC. Open command prompt.
adb reboot recovery
Wipe, reflash.
So far, nobody has managed to brick a Nexus. There is no way as the fastboot mode can restore the whole phone and can't be messed with. Make sure you have the latest version of the SDK with correct USB drivers and fastboot. Then try and reflash the recovery image.

britoso, thank you soooooo much! The only way that I knew to get into bootloader/recovery was via power button/volume down, but power/trackball brought up the bootloader screen, and I clicked on fastboot. I was able to flash the RA recover image through the command terminal via fastboot, then able to get into recovery. I had cyan and modaco sense on the sd, and was able to flash one of them on.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see "quietly brilliant"!!! I WILL buy you a beer, a case in fact as soon as money clears my paypal account.
I have learned my lesson, research research research. (I did do some, but not enough to feel comfortable with what I was doing - hence my cry for help!)
Other than the phone and OS itself, the thing I like most about the nexus is the fact that one CAN root, and then customize (sold a Telus moto droid because I could not do that very thing).
I digress... thanks again so much!
And Paul, thanks for your sense ROM; I've had HTC phones from the Touch to the the diamond to the Hero, and missed the UI!

Glad to hear it. You learn the most by trial and error.
I think i got the same problem. i tried to Unlock Bootloader and Root Google Nexus One which was successful but then i tried to superboot it and when it came to the part where you "double click the ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’ file" i clicked it but it did not go to the nnext screen where the superboot completes it just stayed at the "bootloader screen". i must hve not done something or done something wrong i dont know.
So then i unplugged the phone from the pc and rebooted it. when it reeboted i wasnt getting any network, the phone was slow and the notification bar would not slide down...also i noticed the phone restarting on itself...
/i tried all kinds of "restore to factory settings" but not solved. Can anyone tell me what to do tht will work. I coud not understand what was said in the above thread as i am new to this android n my first time rooting n stuff n i believe that solution would work for me too..if some one could please explain in simple tirms the steps i need to take would be good...
Really appreciate it....

[Q] Root stuck, Red triangle and exclamation mark

Hi I've been reading these forums for ages but only just signed up, I'm looking to root my hero (surprise) and complete newb.
Basically current build/software is 3.32.405.1 so 2.1, followed the rooting instructions exactly, then rebooted holding home and power on buttons but it just boots straight into a red triangle with exclamation mark in the middle of it, I can hold power and volume up to get a small menu with apply sdcard: update but tried that after getting frustrated and that said that the file wasn't verified.
how do I get the normal recovery screen because already have a villainrom on the sdcard.
You need to do the root process to get to the care bear, then flash villainrom on the care bear, before rebooting.
That will get you sorted
Well I rooted using universal androot, then used the teminal to input the su (press enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img (press enter) part of instructions but at no point do I see the care bear :S
I have the same problem as Ejen. The phone is root i have superuser permission i do titanium backup .I put RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 with Better Terminal Emulator. When I turn off phone and press Home&Power I get a picture phone with a triangle. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
Yes, this is because stock rom automatically reflashes recovery with the stock one each shutdown iirc.
You need to stop this happening, but I can't remember the command. When you have root using universal androot though, you can stop it happening.
Or maybe it's too early for me. Wait till I've had a coffee or two and I'll revisit this...
Perhaps you can edit /system/etc/install-recovery.sh. A quick look trough /system didn't find anything like a shutdown script so perhaps this file is run by the android environment.
I had this same issue the other night, been searching for a fix, hopefully one appears here soon, thanks Pulser_g2, i was hoping to install your 1.5 Rom

Ah seems I'm not the only one well at least I wasn't just being silly then, well tried it multiple times but still seem to have no success even tried the unlockr websites method with no success either.
If anyone knows thanks
Right... Are you on 1.5 or 2.1 just now?
Could someone (preferably the most tech savvy here) if you're on 2.1, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726118 and see if that works.

Ok,... So how far did you get on setting up adb http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/s...de-Setting-up-ADB-and-how-to-use-it.-(Windows) ?
I had done up to part 4 using ADB, opened up cmd prompt I couldn't seem to push stuff to the SD card and was unsure what I did wrong.
When checking the USB works part 3, I used the link chose part 2, HTC sync users > ADB I couldn't find android_winusb when updating the driver software. I'm probably missing something or being silly now but I don't know

Type adb devices, and if you see your phone's serial number, then you don't need to worry about drivers. Remember to "cd" into the correct folder first.
I'll try that but CD did nothing I'm running windows 7 and it sticks on C:\users\username Can't go back

I guess that is already on the phone RA-hero-v1.7.0.1 as you said stock rom automatically reflashes recovery. I suppose that the method VillainROM Roots 2.1contains RA-hero-v1.6.2.img. What will then happen with recovery if i try to do again root with VillainROM Roots 2.1?
When you try that method, you get the phone booted into patched recovery, at which point you take a nandroid backup and flash a custom ROM.
this prevents the recovery being lost. Just try it
I'm not at home and can not install ADB and run runindos.bat. I have on SD card recovery and FroydVillain 1.5. That's why I tried this method.Next week I'll be home and if someone does not fix the problem i will try the method you suggested me.
Can I try to put again recovery with Better Terminal Emulator, maybe recovery was corrupted ....
i went through the same thing!!

helloo!! i apologise if i am interupting or butting in whilst your in the middle of other solutions... i just saw the title and jump right in. i went through the exact same thing just 2 weeks ago!! unfortunately for me there was no successful forums or websites at the time... it sounded like a simple problem, with no simple solution.
this may not be what you where looking for, but its a very quick easy method that definately worth a try.
so... am i right in saying you have the official OTA HTC android 2.1 update?? and you now want to get this rooted?? and have you also tried rooting using the two common methods, the "one click root" and the "unrevoked" one? thats wat i did and i kept being stuck at the same red triangle and exclamation mark.
those methods (and countless others) will not work with the official htc hero android 2.1. (as far as i know) what you will need to do is downgrade the phones software. check htc's website and look for the older RUU and using the computer get your hero back to android 1.5. (under no circumstance should you upgrade your 1.5 android to the 2.1 android via HTC's OTA update... its only going the remove the root access!!!! - always reject it)
then continue to root as per the numerous rooting guides. done? now, obviously you will want to flash an android 2.1 rom. if you want to keep to htc's original 2.1, you can search for this in the forums under 'development'. or go ahead and flash the custom roms (villianrom).
thats exactly how i did it. im not entirely sure if this is the info you are after... but reply back and ill be happy to answer any query - big or small. (i should warn you, im no expert - but this forum is filled with the earths most powerful brains - u should have an answer in no time!!)
I have an HTC Hero. I ran the simple root method and got Carebare response.
I too have read numerous threads in the forum here and elsewhere but can't seem to get past the USB section.
adb says no device
I can use HTC Sync to sync data to the phone.
The SDK is installed and I have previously used it to capture screen shots of my device.
If I try to run one of the RUU executables, it fails with a [114: USB Error] (number may be wrong but the message is right.
I can mount the SD card and copy files to/from it.
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Quad Core AMD CPU.
If I do the Home/Power thing, I get the same red triangle as described in the 1st message of this thread.
Fwiw, I have successfully and repeated loaded ROM's on my previous phone (HTC S621) so I am not a complete newb (but i am newb to Android).
What am I missing? This shouldn't be this hard (at least from what I've seen posted anyway)

Sorry not what I mean. Like the g2 was shipped with software version 1.19.531.1, and the g2 OTA is version 1.22.something.
If you have no shell access now, be it in recovery or while trying to boot, then you only chance is an official signed img or ruu FOR YOUR DEVICE. If there has not been any OTA out/applied to your phone before you got it, then it should work.
Is there one for the uk shipped ones?
I think the stock ROM is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822908 , though I don't have my own DZ yet to check.
I have an extracted stock rom, I will upload, hold tight...
Is the phone a unlocked unbranded phone? If so you can go back to stock by flashing a extracted stock rom from hboot, I have dine this a few times already. Hold tight, I'm uploading
Sent from my HTC Desire Z Beast
Do you have skype?
Its taking ages to upload;(

All i think has happened is that that the rom or the kernel has become corrupted by what you did...
If its that we can solve that shizzle, just flash this PC10IMG that i have, its your best and only shot
JD
it is, 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M

[Q] CWM Recovery Errors

I understand that there are similar threads out there but I still can't seem to figure it out. I apologize ahead of time for any wrong terminology, I'm pretty new to all of this. To give a background on what happend, I started my day off by rooting my phone with the following link (I had tried a different method with visionary plus and terminal but it wouldn't work)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
this method worked just fine and gave me s=off, currently what I have is as followed:
Glacier PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (pd1510000)
MICROP-0429
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
After gaining my root I was excited to try and flash a new rom. I installed the clockwork rom manager from the market, flashed the recovery then backed up my current in case of future problems.
Next step for me was to flash a new rom. for this I followed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070444
everything seemed to be going fine, phone restarted and I sat waiting (since I read the first boot could take 10min or so) after at least an hour I began to worry. Nothing happened, just stayed on the mytouch 4g startup screen and never changed.
I rebooted into recovery to try again, I can get into my hboot and into clockwork Mod Recovery v3.0.2.4 just fine. but there are a whole bunch of errors I cant fix. When clockwork starts I get the errors
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
If I try to format anything (cache, system...) it will say
Formatting /cache... (or system depending on what I am trying)
Error formatting /cache! (or system)
If I try to restore to a previous time it will start to do the restore, it will first do the boot which goes fine, but when it tries to format the system during the restore it fails just like if trying to format it individually.
At this point I would just like to get my phone working, any help would be much appreciated. (please try and use details so I can follow... still trying to learn alot)
I hate to be the bring of bad news, and remember don't kill the messenger, but it sounds as if your phone is truly bricked. There have been several threads on this already. As i know you are aware of. And very few, if any, have recovered.
There is a thread Posted here that boils down to the fact if the VISIONary.apk & root.sh method do not work then you have a bad eMMC.
Since it appears your phone does have a bad eMMC, hope you have insurance on it.

neidlinger- i happen to have bought the insurance for 6 bucks a month or whatever it was - they said it extends the mfr warranty another year and then it gives you drop-in-toilet etc insurance with around a 120$ deduc.
I'm with t-mobile and got the phone thru the mail. If I take this back to a local TMO store for warranty claim, there's no difference is there? (i.e. you dont have to follow the mail route just because that's how you got it originally)
also- would these cache mount or failed -pu errors, essentially beyond repair - are we getting these to be recognized as hardware failure (i.e. no deductabel and counted as a mfr defect) or are these coming up as TMO insisting on counting them as some user fault, requiring the deductable to be paid??

9/10 times if you buy a phone through the mail you will have to exchange it through the mail they will not allow you to walk into a store and do the exchange. I ran into that with my blackberry 9700.

nope there is not way around it. once the eMMC fails it's down for the count.

Is there any way to tell if the eMMC is bad. the visionary install went fine, just using the terminal to do the sh root.sh command wouldnt work, it would just keep saying failed (function not implemented) which is why I switched to visionary and adb gfree method... which worked like a charm, not a single hickup with it. the problems didnt start coming until after the rom instillation didnt work

i see you didn't read the thread i posted.
The link i posted is to a thread here @ XDA, called "Post your eMMC serial number". It has alot of information regarding this very subject, including how to tell if your eMMC is indeed a faulty one [ by serial number ].
it really doesn't matter when the problem happens. it just matters that it happened.
./gfree is basically forcing the rooting process to happen while the root.sh is asking for it to happen. If the root.sh process doesn't allow you to proceed, then you may have a faulty eMMC. you forced the phone to root and opened up a bee hive in the process.
yeah sorry, I posted and then was just reading that forum as you replied... sorry about that.

no need to tell me your sorry, . If you want to make me mad tell me Popeye's Chicken is out of business. we all start out somewhere. Just be willing to read prior to doing anything or asking anything. Chances are there is an answer somewhere. Sometimes we like what we read and sometimes we don't either way it's out there.
Hiddentalnt, please post your eMMC serial. We need people who have recovery errors to post what serial they have so we can actually pinpoint the problem being the chip. Thanks. The instructions are posted in the thread neidlinger posted above. Thanks

I do know one guy was able to via flashing an older recovery image via the hBoot, but you have to have the .85 engineering screen. Which you do not have.

Well you need to flash the 2.5.x.x recovery image for the mytouch4g from the hBoot, then reboot then navigate to the recovery and pray that it works. If it loads you might be able to load a new ROM but i only know of one case where that worked.

I would be that ONE case where this option did work. And the difference I have seen between the first time when flashing CWM worked and the second time (when it DIDN'T work) is the COMMAND error. If your CWM says anything about COMMAND error then flashing the old CWM isn't gonna work.
Here is a link to a post I made with a download for the old CWM

I'm not sure I fully understand your directions in the other thread. So when i download the zip, i get inside it and go all the way to recoveries to get out one of the disc image files. which one do I want, there is a 2.5.1.3 and 2.5.1.4 and a 3.0.0.5 but I'm assuming thats not it... but once I get one of those I rename it recovery.img then i use abd to push it... what is the command to push it? and i have to be in hboot then fastboot to push it?

Stuck at HTC screen, won't boot

Hello All,
I have run into a problem with my Heroc not wanting to boot. Some background:
ROM: CM7
Kernal: Jaybob's recent Kernal
Mods: Firerats
All was fine and dandy until yesterday, when I decided to reboot the phone (with a full battery charge). The phone shutoff and when restarted was stuck at the HTC screen. I've tried several times to get into recovery but it hangs at the HTC Screen.
I can enter Fastboot/Hboot. I did some digging and tried to unroot by using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988741
Method 1, loading the imaging on the sd root and loading. Everything loaded fine but when I reboot it still hangs at the HTC screen. I have not tried to RUU being that I am on a Mac and don't have access to a PC at the moment. So RUU will be done later tonight hopefully, but I don't expect different results.
It seems like I have some messed up memory and its not allowing me to boot. Does anyone know of a fix? I'm not desperate because its time for an upgrade. I just wanted to hold off on using it until January when Sprint holds their press conference, assuming its an Android device. I'd like to see what I could get versus the phones on the market now.
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

You definitely need to do an RUU. No way around it. know it sucks starting fresh again but it'll solve all these problems you have. If your s-off you can also do the RUU from Hboot but it's better to do it from PC as I have learned. Good luck man.
thanks a lot! om going to give it a try later tonight when i have access to a pc. Im not so much worried about starting fresh than I am losing the phone and using my upgrade now... I have a curve laying around and started to thing about using that for a while until I see something I like.
i will report back tonight or tomorrow when i am up and running again.

Thanks. I will give it a look.
I read through the thread and it looks like you passed the black htc screen and got to the white one. I can't get passed the black and adb doesn't pick up the phone at this point. I'm still waiting to try the RUU and see if HTC sync picks up the device.
Very resourceful thread and I'll be sure to give all the suggestions a try before giving up.
HTC sync won't pick up the device and I don't think any other option will work since I don't have ADB access. I'm just gonna bite the bullet and look into a replacement.

i had same kinda deal from a bad radio flash
if you still have fastboot do
"fastboot erase system -w"
"fastboot oem boot heroc.hboot-1.46.2000.zip"
you may need to rename the file to HBOOT.
if that dose not work unzip the file take the hboot img and place on sdcard and place where your fastboot files are like in android/platform-tools.
this made a deference for me.
then try fastboot flash img hboot.img
this is what i went through here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086125
good luck if i can help let me know.
Thanks for the help oostah. I haven't been able to get ADB to recognize the device. When I get home I'll try it again and remove the hboot as suggested and give that a try.
Now that ICS is in beta for the Heroc my phone decides to crap out on me and I can't enjoy the hard work put in by the developers. Nonetheless, I am much appreciative of all the support put into the Heroc and have learned a lot from this community
I'll report back tonight with my results.

you are welcome i have been there before.
your phone may not recognize ADB but it may still take fastboot commands. that was one thing that drove me crazy is that i could fastboot but not adb. let us all know how it goes.
I did "fastboot-mac devices" and got my device to show up, so it registered. however, when I go to erase system I get an error, "remote: not allowed". The same occurred when trying to flash the .zip and img files separately as suggested . At one point the devices started vibrating like crazy and shut off, the led started to blink green. I did get it back into Fastboot, but now it won't turn on.
Thanks for the help though It was already replaced and the new phone should be here tomorrow. I'm just going to miss the Hero since it was my first Android device and I learned a lot in this forum.
Thanks!

i still have one of my hero's that i let people play with when the come over. it still runs off wifi so they can play games yous gtalk what ever be nice to get it up and running for experience and fun lol now that your not in a have to mode.
do you have a nan back up from a sd card any place like on your pc if so look for your clockworkmod folder look for backups and you should see your backups open one of them you will see
boot
system
data
recovery
sd-ext
cache
they will be img files you can place them on your sd card and fastboot them back to the phone
"fastboot flash img boot.img"
"fastboot flash img system.img"
and so on
or
"fastboot boot img boot.img"
"fastboot boot img system.img"
and so on
or you can let it RIP
good to know. I'll give that a try if I can get it booted. I'm thinking its dead and needs a charge to get back into fastboot. I'd love to get it back up and running as a learning experience more than anything. I wont have time until tomorrow or Thursday . I will report back when I give it a try.
