To root, or not to root ! - G1 General

Ive always been curious as to if I should root or not root my HTC dream(rogers) is it still possible to do this with the mandatory software upgrade that rogers required for the internet to work? And, if anyone could give me reasons why I should, itd be great
thanks

I think a smaller list would be to list why you shouldn't
The List of reason's why not to root your phone:
Code:
....
The G1 was created to root. It unleashes the potential of the phone. Apps2SD, Sense UI, 2.1, Total Control, Themes, just to name some. Seriously Root that Bia.

Who's waiting on the other group of devs before they root?

I'm not too ready to go nuke all of my apps and data without being able to back them up properly. Hopefully the other group will have a method that doesn't involve completely flashing a new image so I can use Titanium Backup before flashing any custom ROMs.

Really? I'm pretty sure I didn't have to factory-reset to root my Hero. I've also had my EVO for over a week, so everything is already installed and organized.

If i understand this, rooting does not require any flashing, so you can root , install titanium back up, and then when a custom rom is ready you can flash it.
I will check the grack one out, but I am 80% sure I am going with the one from awesome guys here.
The other group of devs are using a exploit in sprint\htc software. They are going to release the info on the exploit to sprint\htc in 1 week after release. So say goodbye to your other root. I am pretty sure toast root is from a rom thats for engineering purposes. So the root should stay working. Don't quote me on this but I am pretty sure this is correct info.

they still dont have "sticky root" or the ability to flash custom roms and such. ur gonna need to use my method for that until we figure out nand protection and how to exploit it. i think they are only releasing their root method as a "proof of concept" or t show how easy it was to gain root perms on the stock build. it will most likely not be the replacement for my method. i talk with them a bit and its just in hopes that both methods together could possible bring a nand exploit to life.
At this point I am waiting as I don't see any reason to root. I can't use titanium backup and frankly don't care about themes or additional roms. OOTB is fast as hell.
Once full system access is achieved, or a fully functional Froyo ROM is available, then I will root.
Just my observation, but I alway ERR on the side of caution.

The first thing you do is flash an image to your phone that overwrites your current ROM.

I was hoping that I'd get the ability to access recovery and flash new ROMs with theirs, so then I could just flash a custom ROM with normal root anyways. According to toast, this doesn't seem to be the case...

Really? I thought sticky-root was one of the items on their checklist to accomplish before release.
Does anyone happen to know if I can backup apps with a non-root required app then restore them and use Titanium Backup's Market Doctor to fix their Market entries? The lack of backing up Market links is the only reason I don't use other backup apps.

Most custom roms will remove the OTA update feature. Only stock roms will have this feature. If you are on a stock rom and update is available you can decline it also.

Very wise advice. I have HTC updates turned off. Not sure if there is any place to disable Sprint updates.
Also on ANY piece of electronics you have to give your consent for any update to be applied, so even with the stock ROM you can decline updates.

Future - How will all this work?

I don't really know too much about root, but I'm wondering how things will work when root is widespread. Will we always have to rely on devs for every future android upgrade or something?

I'd assume no, except for perhaps the first one, but I haven't seen it explicitly stated anywhere.
The short version is that there's userland root access. That pretty much means that the what's on the device can be modified, like apps removed etc but afaik there's no bootloader access yet which would be necessary for flashing custom images.
Root will make cracking the bootloader easier though so it's a major step on the way.

If its anything like the HTC Dream I had before my Sony X10, the root is a process that keeps your phone rooted. Unless you revert back to the original software, you should never lose it. As for the OS, there usually will be people developing custom ROM's for quite a while on this phone but essentially on that part, yes it does depend on the devs.

I'd imagine not for a while. It hasn't even been a month since it came out yet. I'm sure we will see it at some point in the next few months. I hope...
CM7 is being built from source in the dev forum. Gingerbread is technically out for the G2, just not officially. CM7 is better than anything T-mo will push out to us though.
Edit: Spelling errors..
But wasn't there some stuff that broke with CM6?
Like wifi calling or something, I don't remember...
Everything is working for the most part with cm7 at this point. I'm running build 45 and I'm very satisfied.

I'm guessing he wants to know when the official HTC Gingerbread releases. The one with Sense... Ugh.
My guess is in 2-3 months. I hope HTC are quick with this one. (Not that I will use it, atleast not a sense rom. I would go as far as Sense without rosie.)
The G2 doesn't use sense UI. Only the Desire Z does.

Rooting the G2 doesn't take any special skill and the procedures that are written out here and on unlockr are proven to work. Once rooting to install Cyanogen all you need is to download ROM Manager from the Marketplace and it will handle installing recovery and allow you to download ROM for install without you having to worry about it.

No, don't use the unlockr tutorial, the one that I saw used the VISIONary way. Just root it with the instructions in our Wiki, that's the safest way to do it. But whatever you do, DON'T use VISIONary EVER, it bricks phones. ADB might not be the easiest to use for some, but at least it works. Some people have used the VISIONary method and it worked for them, but that method is a "fake" root, its about 90% real and that method is risky, it bricks some people's phones. If you root at all, its best to learn how to use ADB with the Rage and GFree method.
BTW, people were talking about the Sense UI, I think that its the most stupidest thing that when a manufacturer makes a UI, such as Touch Wiz, Moto Blur, or Sense, it is referred to as "bloatware" and needs to be removed, but when the community makes a UI such as the MIUI one, people call it the "most awesomest thing EVER!"

That's because the roms nd UIs built here are more customizable and enable features not available through stock roms...like wirless calling, rooting, it just gives more control. And yes! MIUI is awessomeee...my fav. Probably because it has everything I need.

Off topic I suppose but Sense does have quite a few things that stock Android doesn't.
This bug alone keeps me off stock android including Gingerbread:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1180
However HTC mail which comes with Sense does not have that bug and let's me use an Android device for work.
Call it bloatware, call it what you will but for some of us using an Android device would not even be an option without Sense.
If one of the htc product that has sense comes out with gingerbread, I'm sure many chef will port it, including to desire z

You're being a little harsh there. In fact, visionary has never bricked a single phone EVER. What it can do, under some circumstances, is corrupt the system partition, which is TRIVIAL to repair. Especially since the first step after visionary is to gfree it.
ALL THAT VISIONARY IS, IS A TEMPROOT.
The reason why it can cause issues is that you can end up in a state where you are synchronizing a broken filesystem cache with the root filesystem. That is all. This is NOT a brick.
The ONLY known bricked VISION was produced by scotty2 while trying out a radio command that repartitioned the eMMC and broke the radio. Visionary has NOT bricked even ONE phone.
Hey I want to know something. I rooted with visionary a month ago and now I can't flash any themes, it just say installation aborted. Do you think it has anything to do with visionary. And if it is, what can I do to reverse the effect or even fix it? Thanks.

How the root exploit (rageagainstthecage.bin) works

I was curious about how the root exploit that unlocks our phones for all this great dev stuff works. Found this explanation, and it was quite good. For those with sufficient unix/linux knowlege, this will be totally understandable, so I'd recommend following the link, and reading the in-depth explanation, complete with C code. For those with less background in this stuff, it's still worth a read, but you'll have to work harder to understand exactly what's going on.
Post any questions in this thread, and I'll be happy to answer them!
This is a good explanation, I read something similar when rage was released, may hve even been this. But I'm pretty versed with linux and am overly versed in C...to the point where I have nightmares....

Hi and sorry for the bump guys,
Does anybody know how to do the rageagainstthecage root with an LG Optimus One P503? I have tried everything - Simple Root, SuperOneClick, VISIONary, z4root, nothing is working! I really need this root because my phone did not come with Android market and I want to install it through ADB, and I think that requires a root correct? Even if I can't root my phone, is there any way to install an apk to my phone's internal storage and not my SD card?
Thanks for reading this!
By rooting lol
I know for the opimus s you have to force a flash of an older software for z4 to root.

no you dont need to root to install thru adb. just open up command/terminal,
adb install /blah/blah/phoneapphere.apk
alternatively you can put it on your sd card and use a file manager to locate the apk and install it on the phone.. for a nice easy root, use gingerbreak its the latest un patched exploit.. theres an apk version on xda it will root your phone no issues

specs don't really dictate which exploit will work on a device though.
If the bootloader is locked on the HTC, there's going to be a different workaround to root it.
just sayin'

Rooted by downgrade... but...

Hi everyone. I rooted a friend/customer's Droid Incredible that came with 2.3 because he wanted to be able to tether wirelessly. This is essentially the ONLY thing he cares about. He is not a techie and is NOT a tinkerer.
I performed the downgrade (to 2.2) and root of his phone the loooong way (ADB, ZergRush, and unrevoked) and successfully got Wifi Tether to work. It's precisely how he wants his phone.
The problem is that now Verizon wants to push the 2.3 update on his phone. I am assuming that this will kill his root and superuser permissions. Once the phone is rooted on 2.2, what is my best option here? I would assume that he doesn't want to throw any wacky roms on there, but I know he doesn't want to get that "Would you like to update?" screen 10x a day.
Should I have him run the update?
Is there a way to disable the update?
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, everyone!

Have you obtained s-off? Your best bet would be to get s-off if your not already and then flash one of the stock based roms built from the newest ota ( stock+, wildstangs 4.08.605.2, touch of blue ), and then set up wifi tether on it. Also you can edit epst settings on a non rooted (or rooted) phone to allow use of the stock wifi hotspot app for free.
At this point, since the phone works exactly how he wants it, I'd prefer to disable the update. Is there a way to make it shaddup?
