In a couple of months my contract with 02 comes to an end and I'm looking to move to T-Mobile (that unlimited data tariff calls to me!)
Anyway - Since nothing seems to have come of the supposed replacement (HTC Omni) this quarter I'm starting to consider my options. So far the following have come to me:
1) Carry my EXEC onto a new contract and save some money. Downside is the phone is a bit bulky and I'd prefer something a bit smaller, also lack of HDPSA (although how can you miss something you never had...?
2) Get the MDA Vario 2 (HTC TyTN) - far as I can tell I'd gain HDPSA and loose the VGA screen and a fair chunk of the size. Performance-wise is more or less a bust.
3) Get $SomeOtherPhone (Nokia n95 is interesting me here) sell the Exec and use the money to buy a WM5 PDA for the things I like using WM5 for (GPS and eBook reading are the two biggies) - Fujitsu Loox n560 would be a probable candidate here.
Any thoughts on the options, or can you suggest something better?

My situation exactly.....what I did.
Took the FREE M3100 (TyTn) and new plan to save money. I am now evaluating it as to whether I want to replace my Universal or keep it as a spare!!
To be honest so far the universal screen and keyboard are the main things I think I am going to have difficulty living without. However the form factor of universal I definately wont miss!!
Still cant have everything.

Oh yeah, forgot one of the downsides of the Vario 2 is the hideous colour scheme - the Orange M3100 looks much cooler
In a couple of month's T-Mobile might have something else that you'll be interested in.
It's best to wait until your time is up before choosing your next phone.

Oh I know, I'm not making any definite plan til the time is upon me, this is more of an "I'm bored at work and kicking ideas around" kinda thing
TBH though there is *nothing* in the HTC pipeline that I've seen that appeals to me - although to be fair the same can be said of everyone else too, the N95 is the only thing I know to be coming that looks interesting to me.
o2 do an unlimited data tarrif - they just don't shout about it!
it's called unlimited blackberry roaming or something like that.
£10/month :¬D

Well theres always the option that O2 will come up with something to convince me to stay I guess
keep the exec to sell on use that money to get a cool day to day phone,
(damn i wish i cud get a casio gz one in the uk),
at the end of your contract get a new contract with a tytn, use this for your pda
stuff
that would be ok for ya.altough im in a similar situ,im keeping the exec as nothing comes close for long coach trips, and im goona get a rugged nokia for day to day
good luck
lol exactly my situation too. i am considering n95 just because there isnt any other new pda available. i thought i would go for new o2 zinc (was it zinc? the 3g one). i wont buy any pda/phone without 3g lol i cant live without 128k online radio on my phone.
anyone considering n95?

I already carry two phones around - taking that number to three would e a bit much
I think as of right now I'm going to go with N95 and a seperate PDA *shrugs*
Depends on if the n95 sucks or not really!
My contract on my MDA just finished and I was thinking of upgrading phones to the newer wing.
They offered me new wing with 2yr contract for $280.
My MDA has been a great phone, one of the best i have ever owned.
Is the wing still a standard USB to charge it and sync it?
Only change i see is faster proc, microSD instead of miniSD, and 2mp over my 1.3...
I use my phone mostly for TXT, notepad and calendar.....\
So should i upgrade?

its not a faster proc. it doesnt have more ram. but it operates wm6 much much better than the MDA series. I just upgraded about a month ago and I am enjoying it a lot. The only reason I upgraded was because I cracked my MDA screen on new years eve.
The wing is slimmer, but its more of a left hand user kind of phone. so the choice is really up to you
I still like the MDA better, because it has the email and ie button on the main top of the screen and it was more of a right hander using phone.
I went from an MDA to a WING ... and I LOVE it.
I would say, dont upgrade/downgrade(!) to wing. The processor is same. RAM is still the same. Yeah, the body is slimmer, but, thats it. Also, you ll have to use the ext-usb to sync and charge, unlike the MDA
In short, the answer is NO

i have had my 2 MDAs for almost 2 years. Gave one to my Daughter and she loves it. Got the Wing online for $50.00 after a $50.00 rebate. Only added one line for 1 year. Ported old number over at no cost. In the offer I also got a new Blue Tooth Headset for free. Free shipping, too. Had to signup for the email package at $9.95 per month, but will cancel as soon as I get refund.
Do NOT buy Wing for $280.00 and sign up for a 2 year contract. Really, I am not trying to tell you what to do, just save you some money.
Wing seems to be a little faster when connecting to the Internet. Agree with what others wrote below. If I had to buy at $280.00 and signup for 2 years I would not get the Wing. I still use both my MDA and Wing. Pretty much the same phone IMHO.
Good Luck on whatever you do.
For those of you who said try another phone. What would you recommend? Nothing that I see is really that HOT!
Yea tmobile doesnt offer any other cool phones. I hate blackberrys.
So can i still get a wing for $50 somewhere an 1 yr?
You can always get a ATT Tilt with contract for less than that. That's way too expensive.
I was going to stay with TM becuase my girls contract is with them and few other friends so calls within tmobile are free for us to each other.
I do see sprints new everything unlimited for $99 no though..

Yeah call that business direct number (cant find it right now---you can search for me though )
and give them promo code "Windows Mobile"
once I get some cash I'll get the Wing, or the Tilt depending on price
Ok ill try the TM business.
Where are you located b.mann? I am in orlando. What happend to my post count?

T-Mobile has the $99.00 plan just like all the rest of the companies.
Nah, stay with the MDA
Inside, the Wing and MDA are identical: same processor, same RAM, same ROM. I'm personally considering getting an MDA even though I have a Wing(I have my reasons). I like how it has the buttons for Internet Explorer and the messaging client above the screen as well as the control for the wireless radio on the left side of the phone. The only upgrades are the fact that the Wing runs Windows Mobile 6 and has a 2 MP camera.
The wing is cool, but I miss the LED flash on the MDA's camera. I used to use it as a little flashlight... MAN that thing came in handy!

Another Florida resident, huh? NY transplant in Palm Coast here.
The only reason I went from my MDA to a Wing was because the last time my MDA crapped out, they replaced it with a damn Dash. Talk about a downgrade. I lost ALL of the functionality that I had with my MDA such as the touch screen and general overall better feel of the keyboard (for my large hands). So I bit the bullet and went for a new 2 yr contract and a $300 upgrade charge even after a lot of pissing and moaning about how ridiculous it was to replace an MDA with a stupid Dash. Not hating on the Dash cause I'm sure there are plenty of people who like it, I'm just not one of them.
Anyway, to the point of my post. It took me a little while to get used to how the phone now opens on the opposite side than the MDA did. The keyboard has a much better feel to it than the MDA did, other than the location of the two "soft keys" when you have the keyboard open. I have had a few accidental sent messages or menu opens when trying to hit the I or O button or the R or T button. I like the more rubberized feel of the casing. And, since my favorite color is blue, I like the color
Overall I've been pleased with it. I guess I could have spent $100 more and gotten an iPhone, but AT&T can bite me for how much they want to charge for data packages and service. Besides the fact that the iPhone needs a slider and a QWERTY keyboard!
MDA for Wing
Here is another vote...
YES...
I have my old MDA and just got the Wing.
Much Much Much nicer.
and b.mann beat me to the best part..
Call t-mobile and use the
"Windows Mobile" and get it for 50.00
Can't beat that ...

Ok so I want the mogul...
found a deal for it new....
$250 less $100 mir....
so all together $150
have to sign a 2 year contract over again and get a data plan... no biggie..
well now I maybe loosing my job so dont want to spend that kind of cash at this moment..
a friend of mine has the sprint ppc-6700 with a ton of accessories...
he said I can have it for $50... and it works great..
is it worth it even thinking the ppc-6700 or just wait till I find out about my job or get a new one (got a lead!!!!!) then go with the mogul???
im just asking here due to a few reasons..
1. I know there has to be someone here that had the 6700 and went to 6800...
2. Someone out there may like the 6700 better as there are most likely roms for it
now I know 1 question that I didnt answer yet..
What is it that I intend to do with the Mobile Phone???
well I sold my ipaq 4700 and all accessories...
so
1. GPS Navigation (have the qstarz bt-1000 logger gps)
2. internet
3. messenger
4. speedometer (for lifted pickup truck)
that is just a few.. so yeah I would get the phone for internet based stuff and bluetooth gps...
I know the mogul has the faster internet connection so that is a plus....
so what do you think?
I had the PPC6700 prior to purchasing my Mogul (I've actually owned a Motorola Q and Treo 700w since too). The Mogul is in most ways a superior device. The 6700 will do everything you want it to do, albeit slower than the Mogul. The major differences are WM6 (now 6.1), REV A data, onboard GPS, and a faster processor (there are actually 2 processors now, one for voice functions, one for PDA functions). The graphics are probably a tad bit better on the Mogul as well. I'm sure you knew most if not all of the differences between the two, but I thought I'd highlight them anyway. If you can get a 6700 with accessories for $50, I'd jump all over it. It is a completely relevant device that will work for most people. Make sure you find a new (different) ROM than the stock one. The stock ROM is trash. Good luck.
well if you get the 6700 you shouldnt have to sign a contract, so you can upgrade to the mogul whenever you want, personally id probably get the 6700 then get the touch pro when it comes out
Also, if you buy the 6700 and have it covered by insurance, if it ever gets lost or anything you will likely get a Mogul as a replacement for the $50 deductible.

hmmm I may have to look into that one...
that sounds good..
however when you sign up for a data plan, a new contract is in order.... they hit you with it... then I cannot upgrade to the mogul..
well talking to the wife this weekend as I need a new car if I get a job that im looking it.... the job is 53 miles one way... opposed to my 20 miles 1 way now..
my 1996 camaro rolled 197k miles...and is not in good shape... she said if I compremise on a cheap car (new but cheap) she can compremise and I can get the mogul... thus I think im gonna hold out for the mogul.....
Thanks guys...
however I see a mention of the Touch Pro... is it going to be that much better than the touch now? I dont like the touch..... although it has more memory...
~Jeff
the touch pro is going to be the replacement for the mogul, so more memory (both ram and rom) slide out keybaord, gps and everything you love about the mogul and more
the touch diamond is the replacement for the current touch, also more memory, and 4gb insternal flash (in addition to rom) but no keyboard
the thing about having to get a contract to get a data plan doesnt seem right, id start asking questions about that
well I was on ebay and decided to take the plunge...
I bought a mogul..... $192 shipped... plus $16 windshield mount + $32 8gb micro-sd
so im now all set....
I sold all my ipaq stuff (including the ipaq 4700) that I had... so I NEEDED something...
I say NEEDED as I have a truck that I wheel.. and I used the gps more or less for a speedometer.. no real way to fix the speedo on my truck as it has a manual trans.... automatics have a solution...but who wheels a auto?!?!?!?!
plus as I didnt buy this from the other guy I dont have to sign a contract.. just call up and pay the $18 to activate the phone.... I am not going to go with the data plan yet....... yet is the key word....

really all that's important now is that I can disable 3G on her phone, and I just cant figure out how. Is there a simple registry edit or a smartphone comm manager around? I tried a few comm managers but they didnt really disable it, I just want it off so it always uses edge
It was time she got an upgrade, so I had her get the burgundy colored Pantech Duo. So as I've heard there is no Roms for this phone yet, so what should I do to her phone? where would i find some compatible homescreens? perhaps the Vox (wings) homescreens would be compatible? I'm not sure yet what I can do with the phone, Im gonna put HTC Home on it if that works.
o man im pissed to find out it doesnt have wifi!
here I was excited she can finally have internet in her room.
makes her and I even more mad that her sister's BlackJack II has wifi.
damn...no secret wifi chip inside the pantech that we didnt know about?
See if you can get your hands on a MicroSD wifi card... They make them but I don't think they're on the market, not sure... But the Duo supports it. Also, there's something called HomeScreenBuilder (use google to find it), it's free and very customizable for her homescreen in WM6. I just sold my Duo recently, but here are a few other programs to check out...
DuoSTT (Answer calls by sliding phone open, hang up by sliding closed)
SmartToolKit (Better start menu, task manager, cleaner look)
TCPMP and there's a flash plugin for IE to play youtube videos, search the att forums it's posted under pantech by my username
Opera Mobile browser, if you download the trial I can get you a serial # (Just go to "register opera" and PM me your device ID)
hey thanks! i didnt know they had a wireless microSD card.
Now I just need to wait till it's avaible somewhere, I hope the price isnt too bad..
I'll put some of these programs you've mentioned on, as well as HTC Home. Is there a customizer for it like there is for pocket pc? or a way to change which icons appear.
I bought this phone for my sister. I think its crippled a lil without Wifi, but she doesnt care about anything but the cool red color and 2 keyboards... *rolleyes*
But to the point, if you are looking for other software, I would recomment using Conduits Pocket Player if you/she would like some music on it. Also, Newegg is selling 4 gig microSD cards (SanDisk) for 14.99. Worth looking into, wish you luck.
There is a 6.1 windows rom upgrade beta rom out for this phone. I have had this phone for a few weeks and am liking it from my 3125 that died. This was a warrenty replacment for me. Figured I could use it for a year and then when my contract is up look around.

$14.99?? talk about a good deal! now only if they could make that WITH the wifi.
well at one point she too wouldnt have used wifi, but when i went over to her house and connected to the wifi at her house with my Tilt from "ANYWHERE INSIDE THE HOUSE **OMG**" now she really wanted it, i got her hopes up to cause i assumed every windows mobile phone had wifi, should make sense shouldnt it? well i guess not lol. she doesnt have computer in her room and the next best thing is if she could get on msn and look at her myspace from her phone in her room, lol.
As far as a media player, I'll probably just have her use tcpmp, being it's the best for music, although not the prettiest, maybe Coreplayer? but I've tried coreplayer and i wasnt able to add onto my playlist, only load a series of files at a time.
Will the Duo work with a 4gig card? I heard it will not read any higher then 2 gigs.

you know what also pisses me off, her call quality is horrible, can barely hear what the person is saying, sounds like she has a blown speaker, but from reviews I've been reading this is really what it sounds like.
and what has pissed me of since the very beginning, was I didn't want her to get this phone originally, I wanted her to get the nokia N75 (she would like it better) but it has been discontinued now.. and there are not any other s60 devices right now.

well, because there is no Wifi, horrible camera, and horrible sound quality, i would not recomend this phone. However it does have a nice Xscale 416mhz processor. I tried some games in Finalburn and they ran very nicely!
for a smartphone I would get a nokia phone, but for a touchscreen phone I would get a windows pocket pc.
In my book Nokia wins the non touchscreen phones, I'd like to see them pull of a s60 device with a touchscreen.

Okay first off your avatar pic reminds me of a very good friend. But every skater looks like that. But secondly, The BlackJack II is made from Samsung. I dont know where you got HTC from Take the duo back and get a new phone. So far it's not that good. As far as I've heard. And I think that HTC stopped making smartphones and the BJ II is a smartphone. Well originally the BJ I had wi-fi (the european version anyway) but at&t decided to cripple it and take out the wi-fi chip. The BJ II was never actually released with a wi-fi chip. I actually suggest you tell her to get a BJ II or go for the Tilt since it's the only phone that at&t offers that has wi-fi (besides the iPhoney and the Crackberry)

I dont recommend the tilt to anyone who isnt technically inclined and/or willing to tinker. It takes too much work to get the phone into a sweet spot. It will be a pain in the ass to update 2 - I barely have time to keep up with updating my own, lol.
I completely agree with you...my wife can't stand my tilt but she isn't tech savvy like I am.
I love the Tilt ONLY because of XDA though...if I weren't able to find the sweet spots I have I would have returned it long ago. I am spoiled...never again will I own a phone I can't customize as much as I do now.

Really? I guess I'm just naturally tech savvy. My tilt is actually my second wm phone. I had the BlackJack first. I didn't find xda until maybe 2 months after I got my tilt. I had already customized it to my own knowledge, but this site made it even better. I guess you're right. It's probably best to stick with crackberry and nokia.

She likes my tilt but cant spend $300 - $500 lol
I also agree, i wouldnt like my tilt if it weren't for xda. the stock AT&T rom sucks, and it would be too plain!

(Although I payed for the phone myself and none of the monthly bills ha) If I didn't take messaging it would have been $450 for me. Some people were especially lucky. There was a time where the tilt was only $74.99 after rebate with a new contract on amazon. That also included messaging/internet. I really think it was worth it though. The rebate, not for you anyways since you would pay min $20 for 6months which would be $20 more than instead of getting the rebate. I had a employee discount which takes off 15% of my monthly bill, so it was a saving of about $25 so I took it. I mean what the heck who cares lol. At least I got messaging too. So my real total was about $425. Which is pretty hefty. Now going back, I could have bought a tilt from ebay or something for that price. :S well that's the problem with tech. It gets cheap too quick. Btw did you check out that slick new white BJII with the pink and the blue background? That totally looks sick. I would get that if it wasn't a BJII and a BJI instead lol
i assume everyone here on XDA is a gadget freak who constantly upgrades over and over again and again.
Hermes should be fairly "old" by cellphone standards and as the current batch of cooked ROMs mature w/6.5 kernel coming into play it should be more stable and even more mature. winmo 7.0 is a maybe at this time, or it might require all new hardware.
how long do u plan to keep it. i expect most answers to be:
-until XYZ model/gadget comes out.
as for myself, i'm either;
-waiting for my contract to expire end of this summer and replcacing it w/the June iPhone
or
-waiting for NVidia's Tegra-enabled smartphone to debut. it will finally match my expectations of speed for a mobile device. hermes is really slow =( even if i use a bare/naked no app build.
Waiting till it breaks i guess. I have nothing against the phone.. Compared to my Co-Workers Phones' Mine is Pretty much a Beast.
Or if i find a good 8925 (Tilt, Kaiser) or Possibly a Sony Ericsson X1 for pretty cheap, I might consider it.
probably as long as it works, I'm saving up for a Kaiser right now but I will still be keeping my 'bankie' even if I get a Kaiser.
Suits my needs... Have a 2nd Jasjam spare for when my current one dies...
I have five 8525's that I have flashed with WWE ROM. I ll keep them till I can't canibalize them anymore, Then I'll buy somrthing with the current WMo os.
2 weeks or less if im lucky i have the white screen problem and the fix doesnt work with it.
i have a touch pro but the screen wont align due to a dead spot so i am just waiting on the new screen coming from hong kong then bye bye hermes you did me well
Still a strong contender - Like a new phone with 6.5
To be honest, none of the WinMo successors have really wowed me as anything more than small upgrades to this phone , which was an absolute milestone in terms of funtionality when it was launched (just consider that, 2.5 years after launch it still has faster data transfer speeds than the current iPhone).
I was lusting after the Raphael until the 6.5 ROMs came out for Hermes. I had no idea that the TyTn could run a 6.5 ROM so smoothly. It's basically like a new phone. At this stage, I'm no longer considering the Touch Pro and will probably wait for the Touch Pro 2 to come out or for my Hermes to break...
X1i
Though, I already have my X1i (Xperia), I will keep my hermes until ... i dunno as long as it is still working...
I too was wating on the TP2, and saving my pennies....
But, then the Amazon deal for a <$100 Dream showed up, and that went out the window!
I sold my Hermes to my brother, and got a white G1.
I will rock the G1 for a while, and keep an eye on Tegra & used TP2 prices. And watch the WM6.5/7 & Android tango to see what's working well.

I keep my Hermes until the end of June, when my contract gets renewed and i own the Touch HD
But i will keep my Hermes further on for testing/development purpose.
And because i got so used to it and love it
for as long as it will run i dont really care if new models are out
Until it dies.
Or Someone gives me a t-mobile g1
i already keep it more than 3years, still like it
Hope this is ok to post this here...
Could anyone help me make an educated decision between the TyTn and the TyTn 2? (Or even a better phone) I've been cruzing ebay for an unlocked or att phone and i came across the TyTn in my searches. It looks like a great phone and HTC makes some of the coolest phones I've seen.
I only want to pay about $100 to $150 (maybe 200 if its worth it). I wont have a data plan but have access to wifi a lot. And I would like to make use of windows mobile. The TyTn is going for about 150 or less on ebay. I'm just worried that its too old of a phone or maybe that the new TyTn 2 is better? I'm leaning towards the old TyTn. Any thoughts would be great. As far as I can see the TyTn 2 is hardly different other than GPS and tilting screen, but you guys are the experts! Any help would be great.
tytn2 is better... but it's still basically tytn1. i, too, was also checking out tytn2 for the longest time... until touchpro 2.
personally, i've been looking at TP2 for longer and longer times and the more i look at it, the more i love it!!! if it ever debuts here in the US on TMobile i'm definitely pulling the trigger on it. my hermes is clanky compared to the thinner TP2. it looks beautiful and has more processing power. and it's time for me to renew anyways and i've wanted to transition to TMobile for the longest time now. so here's a hoping =).
Hey thanks for the reply. Yeah I'm pretty much set on the TyTn 2 now. But people keep saying i should get the Fuze. I dont really like the fuze though. I saw it in an ATT store the other day and it felt flimsy. And for me, the price to performance ratio isnt worth it. The only cool thing i see is its faster, better screen and its slimmer. I think I'll enjoy the TyTn 2 better.

Well, I just picked up a brand new 8525 from AT&T for $100. I did extend my contract, but I'm not changing as I have been very pleased with their service. If I don't like it, I'll give it to my wife who does and get a Fuze. This thing is very fast. I just don't like the lack of internal memory or GPS. I have a GPS mouse that I've used with my Wizard for 3 years, so there's no need to spend more than that at this point. For kicks and giggles, I tethered it to my iMac this morning and there was no difference in speed between it and my cable modem connection. I'm probably going to do a direct port of the HTC Kaiser official 6.1 ROM if I can get a little spare time, so I'm sure I'll be holding on to it for a while.
Ive had mine for several years now (its been shelved since I got my Kaiser a year ago), finally gave it to my counterpart 3 weeks ago - and now its a brick. lol..
She needs a new phone - im happy with my Kaiser.
I have a Fuze now but am using my 8525 with no sim, a powered mount, i-Blue bluetooth GPS and IGuidance as my motorcycle GPS device and in a pinch could still put the sim back in.
