Anyone got any tips for using remote desktop? - HD2 General

Hi, I love how much real estate you get with this phone. when you use remote desktop you actually get some decent desktop space.
My problem is that due to the very high resolution of the screen, i find the remote desktop almost unusable. Previous phones, though they had smaller screeens, were more usable because you had a stylus.
Anyone got any tips for using remote desktop (remote to windows 2003 server)?
Thanks!

This should answer your questions....

What?? pinch to zoom defenitaly does NOT work on my hd2 RDP App.
I suspect it doesn't work on Aloms' hd2 also, how come

You can use Zoomer (from hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584940) and add remote desktop to zoom list..

The Crossbow RDP in Windows Mobile 5.0

The Remote Desktop Client in Crossbow is perfect: just the same as the desktop edition. The possibilty to run in true full screen, 16-bit colors, playing sounds through the Universal's speakers, has an exchangable clipboard, fast rendering, etc. etc.
The one (Terminal Services) in Windows Mobile 5.0 is not much compared to that new one.
Is there a possibility to run the Crossbow version in WM5, or is there a third party alternative, as good as the new RDP Mobile?
Thanks.
Hi,
No one knows?
z2 remote2pc is the best i think... colored.. you can download files from pc..

I installed this on my PPC6700 WM5, and works great, except I can't use the keyboard . Any body else experience this?
Thanks, that's great!! The RDP works perfect as it should in Crossbow on a WM5 device.
Did you extract the RDP from a Crossbow ROM? If so, would it be possible to extract the new Internet Explorer Mobile as well?
Thanks again!!

Nope, there aren't any REAL alternatives - see my related article at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=288506 .
BTW, unrtunatey, the WM6 RDP client can't transfer files, unlike some of the H/PC .NET implementations - and, of course, the desktop Windows one
It is working on Smartphone WM5
I just installed this on my wm5 smartphone and it is working just fine
you need SPHelper to emulate mouse pointer

Keyboard disabled for me too, WM5 on an XDA-Exec. Bit of shame really...would be nice if someone had found a fix already...
A solution that work is to use the Windows virtual keyboard (somewhere in accessories). It's like the PPC keyboard, but on the remote computer. It works... Until a better fix...
Regards
Works perfect with Blueangel WM5 AKU 3.5
works in 256 color and in 16 bit color
sound works, hardware and software keyboards work
Any update on the keyboard issue
I got really excited about this until I also found the non-working keyboard issue (on an HTC Tytn/Hermes) - any likelihood that this will be fixed and any timescale?
Thanks

WM6 Mobile & Remote Desktop Windows Vista
I shot a video (windows Vista on my Windows Mobile) - It works a charm
Have a look at the video if you feel you can spare 10 minutes
p.s:: I was experimenting with iMovie HD on my Macbook and got this video made, lemme know if I need to improve
Link for the video :: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d589LnIGW9o
Sorry for the quality : Was using my windows Mobile's Camera and iSight!!
Fullscreen
Hi.
I manage to got it work on my Loox n560, keyboar also work when installed it in main memory, but when I switch to full screen mode then keyboard isn't availible anymore and also can't switch back to normal mode from full screen. How do you switch back to normal mode?
Either soft key for me gets out of full screen, on universal
The program works fine on my SPV M3100 as an RDP client except even when the 'Save Password' box is checked, it doesn't actually save the password !
Do I need to install something else to get this working ?
thx dude, works fine for me with windows mobile 6 on eten x500
RDP does not work for me
Hi all,
I installed the RDP on my xda orbit WM6. When I try to connect my Laptop (XP Prof. SP2) reacts like desdcribed in other forums (changing to the log-in screen). But on my xda I can't see the remote desktop. Just under a second I can see a picture (looks like a message with a button) but then the display goes black and after some seconds an error message comes that the connection can't be established. Does anyone have an idea what I do wrong?
Just installed this new rdp. It works like a charm.
Except I want to use the Function keys I've got on my keypad. So that when I press F12 in Excell that it opens "save as" or F5 to use "go to".
Grtz

awsome software....just tried it and it works great....tho its nearly impossible to get the athena to sit right.
I saw this ATEKSOFT software and thought it was very clever however from this point on I am advising people not to buy it. Although the software looks slick the customer service offered by the company is appalling. What is more, if you post complaints on their forum about the quality of after service they get deleted. Not what I would look for from someone who wants my money.
Nice idea - very badly executed.
You can do it for free
Download mymobiler: http://www.mymobiler.com
Download VH screen capture driver: http://www.hmelyoff.com/index.php?section=8
Start mymobiler and activate your mobile camera
Grab the part of the screen you want with VH screen capture
Now you have a webcam stream which you can use in any program like skype, msn etc..
Look at this video as example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wveANUBUIJM
Instead of using the microsoft remote tool use mymobiler. It is much faster.
PS: You need active sync to communicate with mymobiler
This is why I love this forum. I've learned something new today - I never would have thought of using the camera as a webcam, or about My Mobiler. I love My Mobiler, very cool app; note, it says you can connece via WiFi, too, not just Activesync. Interesting feature, when you activate "Mouse Curser To", and it essentially turns your mobile into a 2nd (or 3rd) display device for your desktop, with mouse and all.
One problem though, when I activate my camera I get normal video/pictures on the Athena, but only the foreground graphics (camera settings) on the desktop. The video is just a black screen. Any ideas?

Hello.
I have the same problem.
My Mobiler shows only the foreground graphics.
Is there a way to shows what the camera shows in the athena screen?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
Funny, I'm getting the same problem with my new touchII. It still works with both an Artemis and a Pharos on 6.1 Rom's.
Maybe something to do with the camera software or that it is a 6.5 ROM?
Can anyone confirm this?

Remote Desktop Resolution

I'm running WM6 (and WM5 behaved the same way) Remote Desktop and need the desktop resolution of 1024x768. I understand I will do some scrolling because of the native 640x480. I'll just do quite a bit less than on my 8525 (TyTn).
The 8525 and the Athena give me the same server desktop size. On the 8525 I get scroll bars to scroll around the 640x480 virtual desktop using it's 320x240 screen. On the Athena I get the 640x480 desktop and no scrolling. Nice but since the program on the server needs 1024x768 I'm still stuck. Is there anyway to set the resolution like on the desktop version of the Remote Desktop Client? The only option is "fit remote desktop to screen" on the Athena.
I monitor multiple servers and some of the management tools need bigger than 640x480. My whole organization is Remote Desktop so installing another remote control system is not an option.
you can use vnc insted
Can't use VNC

I have 20 servers in our environment and installing VNC would be a chore not to mention. I don't like to install ANYTHING on production servers. Hence the need for 1024x768 in RDP.
It's odd that 320x240 allows you to scroll to 640x480 but no other resolution is available for 640x480.
By the way I love the old VNC. I used to use it on my PDQ Smartphone by Kyocera running Palm OS in 2001. Back then it would allow scaling. It seems silly that RDP can't do the same.

qvga screens have to allow scrolling otherwise the application would be unusable! Is there any way to scale your applications at the server end to be compliant with VGA resolution? what issues does it throw up? As far as I know VNC is your only alternative. You could try running remote desktop in portrait mode to see if that helps your cause any....
shame there's no application to allow resolution interpolation (as seen on 800 by 480 oqo UMPCs) this might 'trick' the remote desktop client into thinking it was running on a 1024 by 768 display and scale it accordingly.
I think I'm talking rubbish. Anyway maybe remote desktop client has a set resolution that it scales to: i.e. 640*480.
NYDITOT
I know Nyditot used to work on my ipaq but it's functionality on WM 6 is another story.
Does anyone have any experience with it on the Athena other than:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1379191&postcount=1
The following link gives hope:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1787128&postcount=11
The mocha client mentions that they didn't use higher resoutions because of licensing concerns and Microsoft. Bummer.
Vijay555 says the 640x480 resolution is hardcoded.
Does anyone have a microsoft contact to find out if there is an update coming in WM 6.1 / WM 7?
I had this working fine with the latest nyditot (you have to reboot with the keyboard disconnected) but dropped it when I went to the far far far superior Z2software remote 2PC
i used vnc from desktops but tinyvnc client connected without problems to windows RDP.(but colors is little shaped compared to ms rdp client)
in my sight your problem is good rdp client software.. try vnc, sources available maybe you can even find or implement rdp desktop image software zoom on pda.
Sort of ...
I did this yesterday, I RDP'd to a PC and then from there RDP'd to the server I needed access to. The PC connected to the server with a 1024 x 768 connection, so with scrolling I was able to move around the remote server's screen.
Not perfect by any means, but it does the job if needed.

where you using Real VGA? If so did you have to go back to standard resolution reset then start nyditot then reset?
I have the same problem. My servers use 1024x768 resolution and many things dont work well with only a 640x480 desktop (which is what I get with Remote Desktop Mobile). I did try the mocha one and it works a little better, but only allows up to 800x600. I need one that supports at least 1024x768, anyone know of a RDP mobile client that would support 1024x768?

Yes www.z2software.com supports what ever res your computer is running and gives you the option to zoom in to 640X480 or closer
@hammermedia, yes I was using real VGA it worked well all you had to do, when first activiating nyditot reboot with the keyboard disconnected ! and when you get into Remote desktop go into the settings and tick "FULL SCREEN" and "FIT REMOTE DESKTOP TO SCREEN"
I will suggest to check the LOGMEIN professional solutions ( www.logmein.com, the IT reach solution or the PRO solution. May be you will discover also that the FREE solution is enought ).
Test them for free.
I managed a medium sized IT company and the remote production machines management is ALWAYS a pain in.... and no solution is the "final solution".
In Logmein I love the resolution settings, (I use 800x600 resized on athena) and the settings to improve the speed and screen size on-the-fly
In 1024x768 on the athena I use the external mouse and just moving it in the corner the screen it scrolls in the direction needed, and is really fast.
The client is an IE or pocket IE plugin (firefox client available)

Another thumbs-up on LogMeIn. I use the free version for home and the "Pro" version for work, which allows more features like file transfer. It allows resetting the resolution on the host, then scaling the display (auto or a certain percent) on the Athena so you can get optimal control. The touchscreen sends mouse events. Very usable.

it's true that it does not use MS remote desktop, it uses there own s/ware but it is truly excellent ! far superior to the MS stuff
Do any solutions offer remote sound so that I can hear my pc's sound on my phone? I've tried LogMeIn, the Z2 app, and the normal MS RD. None of them will actually let me hear the sound of my desktop (i.e. if I play a music file). LogMeIn says it supports remote sound on the Pro version, but I tried it, and it must only work with other desktop pc's and not pocket pc's.
if you want to listen to music from your computer at home, I suggest you install ORB as it is free of charges and excellent ! (+ you can watch videos from home too)
The sound quality over RDP is poor and scratchy, it is also buffered badly
How about this one: http://www.zatelnet.com/zadesktop/main.php
Haven't tried it so no idea, but it does say it supports 1024x768 over RDP
excellent
i have just started using LogMeIn for remote desktop, it is significantly better than RDP although requires a bit of set up.
for remote admin and access to standard windows apps from the Athena it is really very good.
Mocha
I installed the Mocha client and it works pretty good for 800x600.
The whole point of RDP is that it's standard on Windows PC's and it works well in low bandwidth much better than VNC. Don't get me wrong, I love VNC and have been using it for almost 10 years on my home PC.
However, I have a dozen Windows servers that must run 24 hours a day and I don't install ANYTHING on them if I can help it. It's a matter of stability.

Fun with Remote Desktop/Win7.

Was a little bored and thought I'd Remote my Win7 Netbook with the Xperia.
Had a laugh at the expense of some of my fellow Engineers/Computer Scientists.
Some figured it instantly, some had no clue, believes it really was running Win7, some thought it was themes etc of course, and came up with smart arse ideas of what it _must_ be
Bit I found the funniest is that the damn Xperia actually has a higher resolution that the netbook I was remoting with it.
Yes, that's really how big the damned Windows Live messenger is on my laptop(netbooks) 10" screen.
Yes, I photoshop on it, although I use a mouse that's worth more than the netbook itself (touchpads too cramped)
Yes, it's running Win7 and WinXP perfectly. (Infact it's also running Mac OSX 10.5.6 and Fedora 10 also, but those two partitions aren't shown in Win7.
nice ... but things will be tiny and even using the stylus will be tricky...
I tried several RDP progs... there is also a nice one with zoom ability found here in the forums called gamma.. but it requires a server/client files and not the windows RDP.
Good to know its working on win 7

Yep, standard RDP program, it works fine for me and I can type etc. What's the problem?
I have no idea!
I use the software with the original name 'Remote Desktop' (the flatscreen-with-satellite-dish-icon) right now. It does not allow me to type anything as soon as the connection is made. The soft keyboard as well as the fixed keyboard don't work.
The version I had before this (same software differrent version?) did allow me to type but always had the numlock on, without the option to turn it off.
There must me a right version out there

That's a shame. It's been a while since I used either service. My setup was such that I had a URL to go to when I wanted to use the camera. I could even use the pan and tilt functions from my PC. I was using 2 iPAQs, an hx4700 running WM2003SE and a WM6.0 iPAQ 214. It worked quite well. There might have been some changes since then though.
I moved on to setting my cameras to send pictures via e-mail at predetermined intervals or if any motion was detected. This saved on bandwidth and the pictures sent were of a higher resolution.
The cameras aren't set up right now but if I get some time I'll put them back up and see if they still work.
