Need to manually upgrade from android OS 1.0 to 1.1 ! - G1 General

After I failed to root my phone, I managed to install stock OS 1.1 on it (flashing DREAIMG.NBH). I was advised to wait for an OTE update, which I did.
However, every time it does the OTA update, I get a hugely flawed, half working 1.6. Browser doesn't open, Maps doesn't open, call volume doesn't work etc etc. I think this is because it is trying to update from 1.0 to 1.6, when it would usually update from 1.5 to 1.6 (if there is another explanation, please correct me).
So I've re-flashed 1.0. I've downloaded manual update files for 1.5 and 1.6. In order to apply the 1.5 update, the instructions say I need to be running 1.1. Can anyone help me get to 1.1 so I can do this, or suggest a better way if there is one?
Thanks for any help - if I can't get it sorted this week I think I'll send it off to T-mobile, because my alarm doesn't even go off due to the phones OTA update prompt disabling the sound and it's messing up my work routine! BTW, all files will be RC_ as I am in England. Phone is not rooted.
Thanks

Just install 1.6. It is a complete system image and works just fine. You may need to wipe your data partition or at least run the fix permissions script. In the setup menu, search for an option that says something to the effect of "wipe to default". It will leave the current system image intact, but clear out ALL the user data.

Isn't the file for 1.6 only 14 mbs though? my one is. And it's also an update.zip file, so how would this work?

DRC83_base_defanged.zip

This should do the trick I believe, on top of the DREAIMG.NBH dont wait for ota update.
First CLEAR EVERYTHING use RA's Recovery image, wipe the ext partition, dalvik VM cache, and the data option what ever it is.
Next flash dreaimg.nbh, right after that's done DRC83 from there you can put any ROM you want (you can skip DRC83 with some ROMs Cyanogen requires it for example)

you did read that the phone is not rooted didn't you?
wipe of Ext is pointless, 1/ the phone is not rooted 2/ the 'stock' ROMs don't understand ext(2,3,4)fs so will not use them
tbh I don't know what is going wrong,
after Android 1.0 is installed ( DREAIMG.nbh ) then settings--> about phone --> software updates , should trigger the correct updates...
maybe a factory reset will help, start the phone holding the home key and follow instructions for data reset

I'd afraid I pretty much don't understand any of this Could you go through it in more detail?
EDIT: ah yes, not rooted.

There is no such directory on 1.0 it seems... I've flashed DREAIMG.nbh perhaps 5 times now; do you still think the data reset is worth a shot?
Thanks for the replies btw.

what exactly does alt-w wipe?

For instance, i have haykuros hero and ive run a couple of optimization scripts and ive run one of them twice. If i reflash and wipe will it be like starting over? Or will the effects of the scripts remain after wipe and flash? thanks
it's basically a factory reset.
no data will be on it aside from the OS of course.
it will be like it was just shipped to you.
layman terms no?

I think i get it, thanks,
So if i have ext3 set up will it be affected, and im assuming the new kernel (for H's hero/rosie) i implemented will be affected as well, and how about the dangerous new haykuro spl i was able to flash? thanks again

a wipe will not affect your sdcard.
tho a wipe might and/or will affect the symlinks to your sdcard.
that you have to redo.
i have H's SPL.
make sure you have the newest radio flashed first and for more "safeness" make sure that your current bootloader says "PVT" on it already.
if you do then you're gravy.
So a alt+w wipe removes root?
Bottom line...
When you alt-w it's kind of like reflashing the ROM you were using.
It will leave whatever is on your sdcard alone, but will usually revert any changes you've made to the phone beyond what came with the ROM.
This includes sms, numbers that weren't synced, icons on the desktop, wallpaper changes, apps that aren't on the sd etc...
It will not remove root.
It will not affect the ext/ext3 partition. But, as mentioned, it will erase symlinks that were created AFTER the ROM was flashed (if that's the method you use) but if the ROM included them, it probably won't affect that either.
Basically, assume any file changes that were made on the phones internal memory after the flash will be reverted with an alt-w.
If you have CM v3.4 then you will have the symlinks back up right away

Cyanogen Updater wipe?

I have the cyanogens 4.0.4 rom installed on my G1, and i was wondering, if I install the cyanogen updater and decide to update it, will my apps, widget homescreen positions, and settings get erased?
I know it's a newb questions but trust me I search the forums and nobody answers that, which leads me to believe that everything stay in tact.
I just want to know this, because with donut released today, I want to know how to update if and when cyanogen throws out another rom.

CM Updater does not wipe, it just installs. Most likely you won't need a wipe ifyou go from one CM rom to another BUT just incase it doesn't load after say 30 mins, then you may need to wipe and reinstall. Goodluck.
Thanks for the clarification. In case I do have to wipe and clean install, is there any app that can save my phone as it is, with all the apps installed my home screen customized with icons, and all the settings intact?
I've read about some apps that do this put I think that just save the apps and not the phone state.

If you are running CM 4.0.4, you are probably running Apps2SD as well. What this means is that all your applications are saved to your SD card.
So, as long as you don't delete the ext2/3/4 partition on your SD card, all the applications you download will be saved. (Even if you wipe the PHONE)
EDIT: Sorry, I misunderstood the question. If you want to backup the phone in its entirety, you have to do a Nandroid Backup through the Recovery Console (HOME + POWER on boot)
run backup for root users and a nandroid backup
because 4.0.4 is still cupcake with donut sprinkles, updating to full donut there is a very high chance u need to wipe....
all your apps will still be there if ur using a2sd
and if you run backup for root users before and after all your stuff should be fine
i assume you are waiting for cyanogens next rom before updating?
from what i have heard, you will have to have a donut rom (either the htc adp1 or one of his before the C&D)
in which case you will definetly need to wipe
backup for root is a life saver and a2sd makes it all a little smoother
good luck

I tried updating without a wipe and the phone was unusable, I couldn't even get passed the lock screen, did a full wipe and reinstalled update and it works fine now. I still went back to cm though cuz I'm waiting for theming and some of the other apps I use aren't updated to work yet.

Newb here to Nexus one... what do you mean specifically by "wipe"
ok im about to wipe it, but cause im android new let me just make sure
that titanium backup program, i ran, it makes full backup on the sd card right?
and after the wipe and update, i just reinstall titanium and import the backup from the sd card right?
and it will recover all apps+their data+ system/settings data?

you will need amon_ra's recovery program. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you probably don't need to worry about it, because you probably aren't rooted, or more likely, even that you even have an unlocked bootloader(which will prohibit you from even installing). read up in the dev section before you even start messing around with this and waste your time, and possibly brick your phone.

theoretically, except i believe that froyo won't see your ext partition if you were using apps2sd before. i'm not positive. i've only put on the very basic apps i absolutely need, because i'll be putting enom's froyo version as soon as it lands and i don't want to waste my time. so, i didn't use titanium backup.
did anyone got a file signature error when trying to flash without a wipe?
I wiped and flashed, restored and flashed without a wipe. All installs ok, but I can't install anything, it all hangs at "installing". Seen others say this is a bug, but it is never there.
I was able to load it right over CM version I was using and have had only one problem, which was it couldn't find my location so I'm doing a wipe and flash as I type this.

if you were rooted, use paul o'brien's (modaco) zip, if not, use cyanogen's and follow his instructions. paul's is signed. if you're getting an error, check the md5 hash and make sure your download wasn't corrupted
seems that the problem is that the default recovery tool only works with google signed updates
and if you are rooted you have to use developer update, so you gotta use another recovery tool as well, like amon-ra
gotta flash this one now

Froyo runs like junk

Froyo on my wife's phone runs like crap. This is the official update from minikies and it's applied to both my phone and her phone. We did them back to back. On my phone, I did the update and tossed it on the nightstand. On her phone, we did the update and rather than wait for things to "settle out", she started surfing the web, etc, immediately.
Any thoughts?
just do a reset....
As in, what, a reboot? It's been rebooted quite a bit.
Each phone may run different as using it after an update should not affect speed at all. My phone ran butter smooth with JI6 while others reported lag. You may want to wipe all the user data and cache data through the phone's recovery. To access recovery:
Shut down phone.
Hold both volume buttons along with the power button.
When the Vibrant screen comes up release the power button but hold onto the volume buttons.
A blue menu comes up and use the volume buttons to scroll and power button to select.
Keep in mind this will erase all her data and may or may not work.
Try to erase the cache first though(also through recovery). It won't erase the user data but refreshes the phone again. Start up may take a while though.
yeah I had done the cache and the other data wipe. I was seriously hoping to avoid wiping the user data because she's purchased textbooks from third party appstores and I'm not sure if they will live.
So the next question - If we move these apps to the memory card (the textbooks) and then tell the phone to nuke the user data, they will survive the experience or does wiping it also wipe the SD?

There's never a guarantee that no data will ever be lost. To be safe and sure, backup to a computer or backup everything on your external Sdcard and remove it before doing anything.
Keep in mind that RFS(Sammy's file system) will slow down over time and is only fixed in android 2.2.1 (mostly). Your best bet would be to flash a new custom rom with ext4 or just a voodoo kernel but stay stock.
SO FUNNY YOU MENTION THAT. As of 2.2 (the official froyo flash from tmo), Clockwork doesn't install so consequently I can't make voodoo go. It's the 3E bootloader. Also I've had no luck with pushing the 3E fix whomever it was discovered. It simply doesn't take. If there's a workaround, I'm all ears. My first thought was "oh just remount it as RW" and I'm clearly missing something.
Ideas on making voodoo go? That was my low hanging fruit I was trying for initially.

Want to install a custom rom. Drop back to 2.1 then flash a custom rom.
Maybe there's something I'm missing here, but if clockwork doesn't work on the phone, how shall I install a different rom - even an older one?
Moot point - I figured out how to get the recovery binary moved to /system/bin on my phone, but the goal was to fix the existing froyo rather than flash a custom rom. If there was a way to drop back to 2.1, I would drop back to 2.1 and then have the tmo official update it. So let me propose something...
Given that I now have 3e recovery doing The Right Thing, I would guess I need to install clockwork, grab the 2.2 Tmobile UKVA6 ROM, then use clockwork to flash that in place. Since I'm flashing from 2.2 to 2.2 and not changing anything, will her user data live through the experience or do these flashes reset the partition with her apps on it?

I must have done something wrong...

On stock 2.1 from a brand new phone. Wanting to get a Bionix-V 1.2 rom installed to start with. (unless someone points out a more popular/stable/better rom to start with)
So I thought I was following the guide right but I cant figure out what.
NOOB GUIDE is what I was following. Here is where I think i messed up or got lost.
3 – Rom Manager / Clockwork Recovery
Now that you have your apps, system data & home settings saved, go to the Market to download Rom Manager (there is a paid and a free version, either will work, but I always suggest supporting developers if you can). We are going to use Rom Manager to install an alternate recovery, called Clockwork Recovery. This is what allows you to make a backup of your entire system (called a nandroid backup).
Once you download and install Rom Manager, open it, give it Root Access (Check to always remember if it's not already selected). At the top, click "Flash Clockwork Recovery" and after it has finished click to Reboot Into Recovery.
If this is your first time, you are very likely at the stock vibrant recovery (purple text)... click on Re-install packages. Your phone will reboot and should come back to the Clockwork Recovery (green text).
If at stock, click reinstall packages again (likely worked the first time).
Great, now you have a custom recovery. Scroll down (by using the volume buttons) and select (by using the power button) to backup your system. This will take about 5 minutes to complete. Once done, you have a complete snapshot of your phone that you should always be able to come back to.
I strongly encourage reading Koush's thread, you can find it here.
His installation instructions have more detail:
Installation instructions:
1.Download ROM Manager from the Market.
2.Flash Recovery.
3.Choose Vibrant as your phone.
4.Accept the Superuser prompt.
5.On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
6.Watch the backup go!

Click to collapse
The thing is when I try to reboot into Clockwork it still looks the same, nothing happens when i tell Rom Manager to backup, it just restarts to what looks like the original recovery screen. It looks something like this..
Android system recovery <2e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -
Vol Up - up
Vol Down - down
Power - Selec item
Reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data

Since this is my first flash I might just be overly paranoid but if this is not right I dont want to mess up my brand new phone by just plowing ahead without being sure.
Thanks for any help... yet again.
Try selecting reinstall packages. And then again a second time.
Tap volume down then push lock/power to select.
Try reinstalling packages.

OK, so something has gone wrong. At first I thought it was all ok but now the more apps i try to open the more nothing seems to work. Going to try to go back to stock and see if i can start over but I cant seem to get this phone to go to the clockwork recovery menu. Every time i restart the phone and hold the keys it still boots like normal. guess its time for more research.
Had the same issue with my new Vibrant. Look for the 3e recovery fix listed in here. Solved my issues.

Apps don't work probably because you did not do a correct wipe when you flashed. Try: Wipe Data/Factory Reset - then Flash the ROM - then Wipe cache - then go to advanced and wipe Devil Cache - then Fix permissions from the same menu, go back and reboot.

Sorry for delayed response. Towns wifi went down last night and someone just now got around to resetting it.
@ferhanmm: I did get bionix on but it was acting very flaky, system ended up getting stuck in what i thought was a brick but someone in my other thread helped me get it working again and now i have a fully working trigger rom.
Everything is up and going again now I would like to get a theme for it, but really the only thing i dont like is all the green icons. About to do some research and see if I can just replace icons somehow.
