did you get any error before trying with wipe?

I tried updating without a wipe and the phone was unusable, I couldn't even get passed the lock screen, did a full wipe and reinstalled update and it works fine now. I still went back to cm though cuz I'm waiting for theming and some of the other apps I use aren't updated to work yet.

Newb here to Nexus one... what do you mean specifically by "wipe"

ok im about to wipe it, but cause im android new let me just make sure
that titanium backup program, i ran, it makes full backup on the sd card right?
and after the wipe and update, i just reinstall titanium and import the backup from the sd card right?
and it will recover all apps+their data+ system/settings data?

you will need amon_ra's recovery program. if you don't know what i'm talking about, you probably don't need to worry about it, because you probably aren't rooted, or more likely, even that you even have an unlocked bootloader(which will prohibit you from even installing). read up in the dev section before you even start messing around with this and waste your time, and possibly brick your phone.

theoretically, except i believe that froyo won't see your ext partition if you were using apps2sd before. i'm not positive. i've only put on the very basic apps i absolutely need, because i'll be putting enom's froyo version as soon as it lands and i don't want to waste my time. so, i didn't use titanium backup.

did anyone got a file signature error when trying to flash without a wipe?

I wiped and flashed, restored and flashed without a wipe. All installs ok, but I can't install anything, it all hangs at "installing". Seen others say this is a bug, but it is never there.

I was able to load it right over CM version I was using and have had only one problem, which was it couldn't find my location so I'm doing a wipe and flash as I type this.

if you were rooted, use paul o'brien's (modaco) zip, if not, use cyanogen's and follow his instructions. paul's is signed. if you're getting an error, check the md5 hash and make sure your download wasn't corrupted

seems that the problem is that the default recovery tool only works with google signed updates
and if you are rooted you have to use developer update, so you gotta use another recovery tool as well, like amon-ra
gotta flash this one now

Telus Hero - Hang on HERO screen?

I followed the guide to root a telus hero to the T, everything worked fine, finished the last step (which was updating the radio), still with 0 problems, downloaded damage control 1.1, flashed it, and now I'm hanging at the HERO bootscreen. I know the first boot takes longer but how long are we talking here? I waited 5 minutes before taking out my battery last time.. longer?
If not, what should I flash back onto it to make it work again?

Ok buddy, this is the best advoce i can give you. Assuming you made your nandroid (you DID make your nandroid, right?!) I would flash back in recovery, then do a clean wipe, including ext and dalvk, and try flashing dcv1, not 1.1. 1.1 is a beta, v1 is much more stable. Good luck man, ill check back if you have any more questions, buts thats as far as my expertise goes!

Bad download? Try the mirror.
With the latest ra recovery, theres no need to name it update, just download it directly from your phone, to avojd mounting sd cards and whatnot, use linda or estrong to place in root, and once again; nandroid, complete wipe, and give it another go!
I followed the telus guide, at one point it got me to create a recovery.img, how do I install it though?

The one thing your steps are mjssing is the wipe. Did you wipe EVERYTHING? And you keep saying hero screen...are you flashing v1 or v1.1? V1 has the nexus bootscreen...

Nothing about nandroid was in that post. What should I be wiping right now? Like do I use Amon Ra to and just wipe everything? Or is there anything I keep?
As in.. Data Partition, Cache Parition, Dalvik, SD:ext, battery stats, rotate settings. DO I wipe them all and then go for the install again?

Nothing about nandroid?! Whaaaaaat? Nandroid is your 100% safeguard buddy.
Yes, wipe it all. Namely data/factory, and ext. Thats in the dv1 guide.
What one are you flashing? Dv1 or tye beya?
Well, I really think Amon Ra is the true safeguard... it's a bootloader that's flashed, so no matter what happens you always have a method to wipe and write. Nandroid just saves MY phone, which was stock with nothing on it, so I genuinely don't mind.
Wiped data and cache, the others said I needed to wipe with adb and I'm not sure how but I could find out quick.
Tried to install DV1 again, same error.
Edit : Nevermind, apparently those are partitions that don't apply to me. Yeah, I wiped that all. This DV1 just won't flash. Is there any other well-working ROMs?
I lol'd.
Telus Hero is GSM, not CDMA like the TP2 I switched it out for last week.
I lol'd alot.
Working fine now, btw. Villian on it.
i guess i should have actually clicked the link you posted, or at the least googled telus

Nandroid Restore not working :(

I haven't used adb cuz i havent been able to set it up. But i have flashed Damaged control succesfully by mounting the zip on the sd card. i flashed it a couple times since ive tried installing Nexus one launcher by flashing from sd card but nothing just messed up rosie. i couldnt restore my older Rom it kept telling me use adb. Fail lol but i flashed damage control 2.05 back and working fine maybe faster. What i want to know is how to get the nandroid restore fixed or working for emergencies.
alt f4 fixes it all
huh? Confused..
he was trying to be "smart" and gave you a bogus answer if you combo press alt + F4 it will exit your screen... Not really sure what your question is though if you are asking as to why your Nandroid won't restore properly it's because you have to "wipe" your cache before doing a nandroid if you are going back to a version that is different than the currently flashed rom. Hope this helps if not then ... perhaps you could re-phrase your question.

The only way I fixed that is by running the nandroid restore through adb like it says to do. I don't understand how you don't have adb installed but you have the phone rooted? I had to get all that working to root my phone and having adb is an invaluable tool anyway.
I did read that the nandroid error sometime comes up when the sdcard is too full so you could see if that is the case. Also, as someone suggested you could try a factory reset/wipe and then try again to nandroid through recovery.

Yup,i don't even have a pc (seriously I don't)
I did run into this problem though, not sure exactly what I did but it worked itself out, maybe try flashing a different recovery image,Or try keeping phone plugged into charger(not sure what significance that has but it did seem to go for me after I was having those problems) which recovery image do you have?
Did you rename the Nandroid backup you were trying to restore to? If you did, and the file name has a space in it, it will tell you to restore via ADB. Just a thought from the limited info you provided.
I had this problem and it fixed itself out and all i did was wipe everything thats under the wipe option in recovery and it worked for me.
Yeah it was actually the cache you guys were right. i did it on my own and thought that might be it. and now i know that was it from checkin the thread. yeah i used pre kitchen to auto root my phone. im actually running damage control 2.05 now the newest sprint leak.damn i love it lol. but imma reflash it cuz i tried to flash a nexus theme/ no luck i want a nexus one interface!!!!!

Won't boot in what way? Can you get into fastboot and/or recovery? Since you're asking about CWM, I'm assuming you can get into it.
If you did a Nandroid backup (the main point of CWM for me), you could try just restoring it. If you didn't, I'd try a wipe all settings and then reboot. You should be able to get back to a virgin state on the main OS that way.
I can get into it, the problem is i erase all data on my phone. Thanks in advance!

I'm still confused what your problem is.
You say the phone won't boot, but then you talk about erased data.
What exactly did you do to the phone? What was the last few things you did before you "broke" it?
What happens when you try to boot the phone (ie., it's powered off and you press the power button)? How far in the boot process does it go?
If your problem is that the phone boots but all your data is gone, there's no way to get back unless it auto-syncs down from Google, or you used a backup program like Titanium, or you made a nandroid backup in CWM.
If you made a nandroid, you should just be able to boot into CWM, select backup and restore and then restore your backup.
This is what happened....
I tried to replace my fonts in system that are supposed to work on a different phone. Then when i tried to boot up the phone was stuck on the silver google logo. Now, after that i went into clock work recovery and formated everything in the mounts and storage menu. After reinstalling the phones boot img, my phone freezes at the google logo. I can still get into the clockworkmod recovery. I never backed it up, but tried to use a nandroid someone posted online but i get a md5 mismatch.
Again, thank you for all your help!

Known issue. There is a thread in the Development section(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884499). The OTA "broke root."
Ouch. Now I understand.
In the future, always make a nandroid backup before messing around with things, easiest way to recover.
I see you're looking for help in this thread. Maybe they can help you.
You could also try flashing Doc's or Paul's roms also in that section.

The custom rom? No, you just go into recovery, wipe/factory reset, install from SD card, then navigate to where you put the .zip on the SD card.
I see you did try the 2.3.1 NAND backup in the development section. Try downloading it again on your PC, unzip it, then place the new folder on the clockworkmod's backup folder on your SD card. Again, do not rename it.

Be warned that if you do get the NAND to restore, you may lose clockwork recovery. I know I did when I first tried to use it.
Don't panic though, because you can fastboot flash clockwork back on from the bootloader.

[Help Needed] Apps won't restore or install after flashing rom [SOLVED!]

Well, my first venture into rom flashing hasn't been the most successful one as it's caused a really strange issue that a couple people on another thread have tried to help me solve, but I figure I had hijacked that thread long enough so this issue deserved it's own thread.
I rooted, unlocked bootloader, and installed TWRP v2.4.0.0 on Stock Android 4.1.1. Everything worked great. Until I flashed a rom. Now, I have been through wiping Cache, Dalvik Cache, Factory Reset, Flashing the rom (I've tried 4 with the same exact issue), flashing Gapps... All seems to go well and it says "success" when I flash, and I reboot into system. Run the setup of Google. Everything seems great and working fine. Here's where the problem is. When Google Play Store starts downloading for restore, and I'm on a solid wifi connection, nothing downloads. I have also tried stopping the downloads and installing apps individually. When I do that, I receive the same error message over and over for any app:
Unknown error code during application install: "-24"
I've rebooted, wiped cache, dalvik cache. Nothing installs. Same error. I did somehow, some way, get Titanium backup to install after numerous tries... when I try to restore any of that backup it just hangs on the first app. It does not restore anything. No batch apps. No single apps. No app data.
The odd thing is, the first time I flashed a rom, it seemed to load up fine. Stupidly, when I was running Titanium Backup for a restore I was not paying attention to what I was restoring. I was restoring all apps and app data... It caused an issue and a bunch of force closes, as you can probably imagine. So I rebooted into recovery and wiped and reinstalled rom and gapps. And virtually nothing has installed since. I have wiped and reinstalled AOKP, PACman, Carbon, and CM to no avail. Nothing seems to solve my issue. I'd love to at the very least be able to regularly install apps from the Play Store. At this point I'm not even concerned with restoring app data if that's too much to ask. I just want to be able to use my phone normally again as this is my "daily driver". If I have to go back to 4.1.1, that would be fine with me. I just want to get back to normal. And I'll do whatever it takes to get there. Any help at all would be appreciated.
Here is the original thread that some people have been giving me great advice on as to what to do, but none of it has fixed the issue yet unfortunately:

2 suggestions:
1) i think others have reported having issues with TWRP 2.4, so try 2.5 or 2.3.2.3
2) I think the error could be a lack of internal storage, so certainly try the "wipe internal storage" in TWRP (after making sure that your ROM/GApp files, backups (including Tibu) are saved to your external folder

Ok giving this a shot. I did notice that you had mentioned a different version of TWRP than I had. I will try the wiping internal storage before I install a different TWRP then if that doesn't work, TWRP. Gotta find the external folder. Unless you just mean anything that is on the actual SD card.

i would actually recommend installing TWRP 2.5 first.
never wipe external SD card.
if you have an app called Root Explorer, that works best.

EDIT: Since I am away from my computer, I tried the multiple wipe method. Didn't change anything. So I will be changing TWRP versions later and will post an update.

You never mentioned using TWRP 2.4. DEFINITELY replace that. Also, just a thought. If you haven't already done so, try using the option to fix permissions. I'm fairly sure its an option in TWRP.

Back in business! Wow thank you all so much! What a pain it's been but without the help I'd have never guessed how to get this running as perfectly as it is now. Here's what worked for me:
Installed TWRP 2.5 (Instead of what I had, 2.4)
Then followed jco23's precise directions:
jco23 said:
- I use TWRP 2.3.2.3 (SS has been uninstalled via it's own app, not Tibu or the system awhile ago) - but TWRP 2.5 works just fine for others
- after downloading the ROM and GApps (or any file that I intended to flash for that matter), I always place the file on the mnt/external1 directory. I
m not sure if this will make a difference, but I recall it being an issue back on my Droid Charge days
- after flashing the files, does TWRP say successful?
- perhaps you do need to a double wipe of everything prior to flashing:
1) mount everything
2) wipe cache
3) wipe dalvik cache
4) wipe system
5) factory reset/wipe data
6) wipe internal storage (if you do this, make sure to change your TiBu backup folder to your external1 directory, or this will be gone too!!!!! also make sure that the system backup you made is on the external1 directory as well
7) reboot recovery
8) install ROM
9) install GApps

Yeah, I've got it bad. I have had CM 10.1, Slimbean, Carbon AND AOKP on my phone all in the last 2 days. Carbon is on it right now. No telling what will be on it by tonight.

funny, and the goal is to find a ROM that you're happy with and don't need to flash.
but I've been on Carbon since 7/5, and very happy.

"not responding" all the time? how to 100% format?

hey guys!
my N4 is annoying the crap out of me, multiple stuff "not responding" constantly, only fixable by a restart.
im running slimbean, which i probably won't anymore, but im not sure if that is the issue.
i want to format my machine 100%, just leave the bootloader unlocked, and install a totally new install of a different rom,
i heavent decided yet but i know that if i just flash a new rom (and also do the 2 wipe cach things) the issues continue because i already
did that before.
so what exactly do i have to do in order to clean the machine, and than have a reallly fresh new install?
ty!
Well... I'm coming from Optimus 2X so I have no idea what I'm talking about, but when I want to do a complete format I go to recovery and in "mounts and storage" I choose format /sdcard.
I guess that also exists in nexus 4?
Oh wait... just realized that there is no external sdcard in nexus 4
So... I guess if you do that you would have to use "adb" to push recovery and a flashable ROM... does that make sense to you?
Or you could try to just format /system!
I would recommend following this guide on how to install the factory image. It will restore everything, including the bootloader, but you can just unlock it again afterwards. Or just not flash the bootloader image.
