why i'm a numbskull (apparently) - HD2 General

I generally leave my o2 bill till my phone gets cut off, then pay online and it comes back on within ten minutes. (Dont pay over the phone, takes aaages to come back on).
Well, this morning, my line was cut at around 6am, and my phone went to bits. I woke at 9.30 and the phone had been trying to update weather and email and the like and the combination of lots of failed data connections had brought it to a grinding halt. Partial popups on screen, utterly unresponsive. Scared the bejeezus out of me. One soft reset later, and of course it started trying to update again straight away, dreadfully slow and unresponsive. I managed to activate the wifi and it finally cleared itself, but i still needed to soft reset again to get it back up to speed.
My lesson for the day? Pay my bill the day BEFORE it gets cut off!

I don't get it, why would you wait until your phone gets cut off for you to pay the bill? Are you trying to milk every minute of your "billing period"?

lol, no, just milk every second of the money being in my bank not theirs. If it took hours to come back on like it does when you pay over the phone i wouldnt do it, but pay online with a debit card and its straight back on. (and i wont use direct debit, why should they have the money two weeks before they make an issue of it?)

You do know that this will most likely go on your credit score, watch when you want to get something on credit and they say no or make you pay a
very big deposit.

I think it only goes on your credit score after a month so he should be all right. Still a bit weird though

It'll be marked as a late payment because a monthly contract is in effect a credit agreement.
I think the credit score will be marked with a 1.

they actually take the money 2 weeks AFTER issuing the bill, well they do for online accounts, not sure about paper/shop billing

You *might* want to check your credit file, if it does get recorded as a late payment every month you're really going to struggle to get any form of credit in the future.

O2 have gone for pretty much all online billing now, so its the same almost all across the board.

Agree. Would definitely take out a free trial with Experian, just for peace of mind.
My worry would be that when your contract ends, O2 are definitely not going to offer you any kind of deal to stay with them. They will be looking to cut any "problem" customers loose.
Which means you go looking at the other networks, who after looking at your credit profile see that when it comes to mobile bills, you are a liability.
Its a shame we all have to conform to survive these days, as in theory I can totally understand your reasoning. Why should these companies sit on our money and get our interest when it doesn't belong to them until the payment date.
Oh, and here is a pointless jpg to get your blood pressure up

hah, to use an americanism.... "lol @ all y' all"
I've been doing it that way for 9 years with o2 (and my utilities) and my bank account has been in the black maybe 5 times since since I started university in 1995.
in that time I've had 2 credit cards and two personal loans, and three years ago I got a mortgage.
the mythical credit score? load of rubbish.they're only interested in money that never gets paid back our had to go through the courts to collect.
edit - oh and o2 have always been great, thus why I've stayed with them so long.

It's not as I got refused a CC recently, even though I already have one and wanted to transfer the balance over...it's luck of the draw tbh

Most bizarre thing I have read on here, I couldnt be a55ed with the hassle, just stick it on a DD

Glad it's worked for you so far, however that was then and this is now... things have changed and credit is not dished out as liberally as it once was. As for your bank account, I hope you are aware that banks can recall your overdraft whenever they want?
I'm all in favour of stretching things and make as much "free" money as I can get (cashback sites, cashback credit cards and in the good old days of 0% with no transfer fees, credit tarting to the extreme with £30k + of interest-free money sitting pretty in a savings account ) but I would never do so to the detriment of my credit file (the score itself is meaningless, it's what's on the report and how an institution decide to interpret it that matters).

very kind of you to let o2 have 5 months or so worth of your interest per year. (billing date 18th, dd collection date approx 5th, doesn't actually become a late payment till the 20th, so every month they get to hold your money for about 2 and a bit weeks that it could be in your account.)
of course this IS a forum for possibly the worlds most expensive phone, I shouldn't be surprised there are lots of people here who don't need to make the pennies count!

For what he paid he definitely overpaid. Retail is $450, so he paid $225 to get it less than two weeks early. He could have gotten the hotspot for more than 7 months for the same amount, or put that towards two years of the extra $10/mo. Either way, he better be totally happy with his purchase.
I get mine this Friday. I see you have that Google I/O informational form in your pic. Is that included in the phone's packaging?
The reason i ask is because I asked my seller about that form and he said that he didn't have it. he said that it might be packaged with the phone itself. He never opened the phone's packaging. So I told him that I'd just find out when i receive it.

Well it depends on where he would have gotten the phone from. Sprint $450..you can say he probably overpaid, $500 RS....you can say he overpaid, BB...I don't think he overpaid. i think its a great deal if you think about it.
Free everything for a month, no contract....etc.
And plus I'm sure there will be big shortage of these phones when they release. I stopped at the bestbuy by my house earlier today and the Rep there told me that this is the biggest preorder they ever had. I'm not sure if he was just talking about this particular store or Bestbuy in general. Just like the Incredible and the iPad this will be backordered. And if you think paying $670 is too much ....wait until June 4th
I think if you really want the phone, you saved up for the phone or whatever if you got the money then go ahead and get it. Because getting one on the 4th is not guaranteed.
Not to reign on some peoples parades of cost, but depending on the store, they may not sell you a phone off contract. I Lou of holding out for new customers and upgrades. Happened to me when I wanted a pre had to hold out a month for when online orders came around

TMOUS Customer Care

With all the horror stories, and rumors going around about TMO saying this and TMO saying that ...
And all the stories about how many returns the HD2 has had ..
I thought I would start a thread to share Customer care Triumphs and Horror Stories ...
The info we share may help someone who needs to deal with them in the future ..
-----------------
So Far I have had very good experiences with customer care, the trick is to ask for the smartphone department right off , they seem to actually know what you are asking then ....
It is now Stuck.
I was travelling internationally and wanted my account to be suspended as well as my HD2 to be unlocked.
They did it without any fuss at all! Incredible considering I still have not made the complete payment on the phone! I was hardly with t-mo for 10 days at that time.
And, the CC people were pretty good and (I always use the online chat as I need to call them from out side of the US) they were pretty good on the chat too!
A BIG thumbs up to T-Mobile!

Never had any issues with TMO CC. I've always got the best deals available to me.
Best advice I can give to anyone dealing with customer care is be nice and never yell at them. And never act like you are entitled to anything. Also customer service reps can not make android appear on your phone no matter what they tell you.

I agree...and they have always been great with me and always did what they could even when it comes to back dating services to save me money! Saving money is always a plus!
My first horror story with T-mobile was and maybe still is..... I have 3 lines with t-mobile my moms,gf and mines I always use my moms upgrades since I always buy my moms S60 unlock devices shes loves Geeky stuff as well. So I got the HD2 with my moms upgrade So after 2 months I notice Data services going up so I called Customer Care telling them why my moms plan was up 25.00 bucks? and they told me she was using a HD2 and I said No I have the Hd2 and I used her upgrade. So there was a big drama where they put a new rule that you cant use another upgrade and use it in another line with out paying the data plan. I was lucky and I got them to lowered the data and change it back to were it was at before and return me the money paid for the data. Now the bad part now I cant Use my moms upgrade anymore to get new High end Phones and im shocked that t-mobile will turn down money and 2 year slavery contract away. The bad part for them Im just going to buy unlock devices with t-mobile 3g and lower my data plan to 5.99 or 10.00 bucks which turns out to be cheaper but I think T-mobile its doing bad having this rule and it all started after the big request of HD2s

I am a 5 yr. T-Mobile employee. And ya its kinda a tough policy that you fell within. You see when you use your upgrade for any smartphone/data device with a 2 yr. contract, a data plan is required for the length of the contract. (same as at&t, verizon, sprint etc.) So in your case you upgraded on Moms line, so Moms line has the contracted data plan, even though you are using it on your line. (I know, trust me it's a somewhat flawed policy that I'm hoping someday will be changed or a little more lenient) There are a few alternatives, instead of having the required data plan you can opt for the cheaper required messaging plan, or there's also a new required phone first data plan (tmobile web/wap) thats a cheap option for symbian S60. You have to have a required feature, but having lower cost choices hopefully helps.

I understand T-mobile Needs to make its money but it doesnt make sence I can go Fully unlock on any device pay 10.00 data on every line rather than 25 and I end up saving more money and contract free and the freedom to leave any time I want (not that I am at the moment) I call it some what bad business since If I was in charge I rather have people lock down in this 2 year plans and be my slaves than pushing this 20 25 data cost that as the phone market keeps growing and growing and data plans keeps getting cheaper you wanna have people lock down on two years especially now that people are been more aware of unlock devices. back in 2003 2006 nobody knew what was a unlock device.

you can even switch to their even more plus plans if you're willing to pay unsubsidized prices for a phone... saving you even more per month without the need for a contract.
but as long as you choose to receive subsidized handset pricing, you have to have the data plan attached to the phone, as per the contract requirements, so they eventually make up the phone's discount.
tbh, i really dont understand how people still actively choose a contract plan on tmo instead of their non-contract even more plus plans. yes, you pay more upfront since the devices arent subsidized, but you will end up saving money after 2 years. most likely it's because people cant afford the device at full retail price upfront, but the EM+ plans allow for the device's cost to be split up over 20 months without interest.
basically, tmo offers customers a chance to save real money and without a contract, yet most of them actively choose to NOT save money simply because of the lure of the words "discounted price". personally, i think it's hilarious to see people screw themselves.
and i lurve, lurve, lurve my tmo service. i'm a fanboy of very few things, but t-mobile, especially once they started offering the even more plus plans, made me a fan. i have also never had a problem with their CS. they're always polite and i never have a complaint since my bills are always right.

Got my Sprint rebate today...pleasantly surprised!

So I'm pretty sure Sprint owed me a $100 rebate...I bought my Evo for $300 plus tax ($45), and Sprint granted me a $70 renewal credit for reupping my previous SERO line for another 2 years (afterwards I switched plans when I bought the Evo).
So I get my rebate check in the mail today, and instead of the $100 my check was for $250!
I remember reading that Sprint has done this before, sent people $250 instead of the $100, but I sure as hell am not complaining. My net payment for the phone is $25!
Dang, my rebate came today also, but it was only $100.
bought my phone the day of the release but barely sent me rebate in last week.. damn i should have just took care of it that same day.. guess ill continue to wait
OP, when did you send in your rebate papers?
I got my phone the 30th of June, I think I sent my rebate in around a week or so later.
So you're going to notify them that they overpaid or at least find out what happened, right? Or are you just going to stick it to them because they're a big corporation?

So you are thief. Good to know. It doesn't matter if it was your Mom or Sprint. Wrong is wrong.
I have no qualms taking the money. The alternative? Talking to customer service for hours, potentially waiting weeks for another rebate...
This is not the first I've heard of sprint doing this, even my friend received two rebates for the same submission before. Either they're not paid enough to do their jobs right, or they're downright incompetent. To be honest, sprints random incompetence in this case and their ability to still provide great service despite this keeps me as a customer, believer it or not.
When I first signed up for sprint I was supposed to get $100 in referrals...i didn't get them but enjoyed my service from sprint anyways...and still referred people.
The mistake is not my fault, I don't know anyone who would take the headache if trying to correct it over cashing the check
Last year when I was working for sprint I upgraded my phone to the blackberry tour and sent in my rebate. I paid 300 for the device and renewed my contract. I got my rebate a month later and it was for 300 dollars. I got my phone for free and my coworker who did the same upgrade got his rebate for 100.
I checked with someone at sprint since I worked there and they told me to keep it. So right now I'm waiting for my next rebate right now and I am interested to see if I get another cool MIR. The last one helped me buy my laptop and if the do it again the next one will help me pay for my wedding.

Ha, it's actually funny you call me a thief for this.
I called Sprint yesterday to report a gameloft game that was mistakenly charged to my account 6 times, instead of once. The charge looked like a single $29.94 charge and I told them $4.99 of it was legit but they took the whole $30 off anyways.. Then they offered me a $70 rebate to reset my contract to begin yesterday, and I was VERY clear about maintaining my Dec first upgrade
THEN they ship a free airrave for a line on my account thats used in a rural area, and waive the mir for it AND removed the spending limit on my account..
Despite all that: Yes, I would let Sprint mistakenly send me money and keep it, especially when (as nhutpham mentioned) the alternative is likely spending another hour or two of my life on the phone with Sprint's courteous but incompetent CS.

lol @ you dude, just because he isnt going to send them the money back doesnt make him a thief...
if i found $20 on the ground, and I kept it... does that make me a thief? no
but it would bring my "morals" into question
sprint error in your favor, collect 150 dollars
I got my rebate last week from Sprint for $100. A few days before that, I got my $100 Visa Gift card from Bluefish (corporate discount package deal). So my total true cost for the EVO was only $99. Well worth it!

Sprint doesn't feel bad about taking an extra $10 a month from you, do they? Why should he feel bad about taking the check.

Don't get another thread locked or deleted because of that. When are people going to let that die? No one forced you to buy the damn phone!
Off-topic, I'm waiting for HondaCop to jump in here soon
I bet if Sprint was to overcharge your bill, you'd complain.

are you kidding me? you knew full well that the evo would cost an extra $10/month compared to other smart phone plans and you bought it anyway.
you can't possibly compare the $10 fee and keeping money that is not yours.
the fact of the matter is that they paid you too much money by accident...if you keep it and can sleep just fine at night, that's your call.
i would give the money back. do what you gotta do...

Shut the **** up. Stop hating because if it were you I betyou'd keep the money. It's different if you were at a store and the clerk gave you more money than they were supposed to.
You people act like you were made from a perfect mold. Everyone sins.

Best Buy Preorder

Was the first art local store in reading Pa. Associate said they would call when they arrived to set a time to come in and pick it up. They said they would install a screen protector and have everything ready ahead of time if I know what I want when they call.
Hope everyone else has a smooth visit this morning.

Do you have to pay in full?
No just 50.

My question is, how do we purchase it for 800, the advertised price? If you can't, isn't that false advertising?

When I go in on Thursday I will pay750 for the tablet since I already put 50 down. I do not have to purchaseanytbing else unless I want to use verizon wireless or purchase accessories.

Something to keep in mind with this pre-order deal.
Most credit cards offer some kind of warranty. My american express for instance extends the manufacturers warranty by 1 year, the first three months is protected by theft and accidental damage protection insurance.
The catch? The entire purchase must be made on the card. So if you put $50 down as a pre-order, and they give you a gift card, and you return to purchase it using the gift card, essentially you are only putting $750 of the $800 on your card and thus the extended warranty / damage protection aren't eligible.
I've used the 90 days damage protection and the extended warranty. They issued a full refund to my card both times.
Just something else to consider with the pre-order deal.
Just preordered one over at the Rockaway, NJ location, smooth as butter. No issues, very straight forward. I was the 2nd person to preorder one. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
The pre order money is put on a gift card and does not need to be used at time of purchase.
I was hoping the free trade program was in place still but it expires before the launch.
At 100 dollars I believe selling it myself will net me dramatically more. I expect to get less for the convienence however find charging me for the option is a joke.

I was hoping our local stores would have some kind of model in stock to show off.. I was dissapointed.
I went to the Montgomery, Al store. I was the first one there to pre-order. I walked over to the mobile department and asked to pre-order the Xoom. The saleswoman asked for my phone number to call me when it comes out. She charged my $50 for the gift card and asked me what time I wanted to set up an appointment. I told her and then asked if my 10% off coupon would work (it said "No contract phones"). She said "Yes, it shouldn't be a problem. If not, I will do something, it is only 10%". So I took my receipt and left. 4-5 min. total.

What 10% coupon is this? I asked if they would match Costco if they are indeed $100 cheaper, they said they should be able to.
I was planning on using my AMEX card too for the extended warranty - Have to see if I can just trade someone $50 bucks for the giftcard.

I would like to know about this coupon too. I just preordered at Best in the West Best Buy in Las Vegas.. Store 122 I think. I plan to buy from Costco if I can, but I wanted to hedge my bets. I can always use the giftcard towards a case and dock. I want the speaker dock, but I don't think I can justify 130$ total, technically 80$ just for speakers.
Interestingly.. the spelling errors went to print.

Oh okay. Most of BB's stuff is way overpriced, so I am not willing to spend the kind of money to become a silver member. I guess it's good they give you something for paying their prices

Yeah I agree, I don't usually buy that much from them anymore... just big stuff that you can't really get cheap anywhere else (i.e. MacBook Pro). It also helps when you have known the managers at the stores for 5-9 years. They generally help make things reasonable for their loyal customers. However, I still think the Xoom is overpriced, but the 10% makes it more tolerable. Did anyone notice any accessories in stock at their BB?

I didn't see any accessories in stock. But I have never seen accessories in stock for a device prior to release. Hell, for the EVO I recall they barely had anything in stock on release day. Based on the preorder form, I imagine they are going to have the portfolio case SKU 2103374 and the Standard Dock SKU 2129336 at release. 4 more days.. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
It didn't make sense, but when I stopped in to pre-order at the Jacksonville, FL Airport Best Buy, I was told by the associate that my final price would be $600 or $800 depending on CONTRACT.
Did carrier subsidies start on non-phone devices for contracts? It that the debacle about activation and reactivation?
I suppose, with something like device + activation being $635, plus $20x12, $240. I would still eat a $40 charge on subsidy for a larger up-front discount, for the crap plan.
Activating that, and tethering to my Incredible. Otherwise PlayOn/Netflix will break the bank.
I guess he could have read enough to know the price for the wifi version, and just spouted that off as well.
The fine print on their Buy Back promotion being free another week, which I just caught after suggesting it to people, just because it's free, says at the Best Buy Mobile stores, for applying it to tablets. So, if you really want $400 back in six months, or the option in case resale goes down in a flooded market, buy at a Best Buy Mobile.
Now to wait for Thursday!

t-mobile needs to communicate better
After reading about how only certain markets were getting the phone, I called the store closest to me to see if they would be getting plenty of stock. I live in Chicago, and there are literally a dozen t-mobile stores within 2 miles of me. So I called the store to inquire, and they told me they wouldn't get getting any - and this is at a semi-flagship store in the Loop. I accepted that I wouldn't be getting the phone for another week, but later decided I can't wait and called a second store. That employee told me that the Chicago *AREA* would be getting the phone, just not any of the stores downtown. Wa-huh? He then offered to give me a list of stores that would have some in stock and told me I should call around and see if I could get on any waiting lists. The very first store I called told me they would be getting 75 units, took my name and told me they would guarantee me a phone. Sending the wife down there around opening time...we'll see. I'm not holding my breath.
This...is a half-assed launch.

5123 S Pulaski. It's right off of I-55 so it's actually pretty easy to get to.
Gotta find out a way to "convince" the wife I "need" this over my GN lol. Then, must find a store in San Diego that has one. Shouldn't be too hard to find as there are like a million Tmo stores here...
--edit-- out of those million stores, San Diego got a shipment of 75 blue 16gb's to one store and in 2 hrs they sold 60 of 75. Jeez...

I have a good one. Drop my wireless bill buy going with the $30/month for 100 minutes/ unlimited text and 5GB of Data. Get a voip and give everyone my google voice number. Forward GV to my Voip, when I'm out and about. And use WiFi calling when being in the house.
Should easily be able to stay below the minutes
So save $30/month. After 10 months I have saved $300. Sell my vibrants and geeksphone and I will be even.

wifi calling still uses minutes so keep using voip.
I'm gonna wait a month before I actually get one, and that will be from eBay. Current prices are more expensive than the international one even, and of course only a handful of sellers and limited quantity. What I really want to do right now is actually see the damn thing in person, be it the AT&T store, Sprint store, T-mobile store, Verizon store, etc... They are all the exact same anyway, besides the radio of course. Spending months anticipating and reading about a phone, I am prepared to be very disappointed, but am also hopeful it will exceed the lower expectations I have set. After researching and subsequently buying and owning smartphones for a while, one becomes more and more cynical. Maybe I'm just diffficult to please. The Galaxy S II was far from what I imagined, and I would judge it much more harshly than all the reviews I've read. But then again, I've owned some other phones from other brands, and even though I hated some of the GS2 flaws, you gain perspective that this is actually as good as its gonna get, because most of the other phones are just terrible in comparison. It's like choosing the lesser of two evils.
I'm rocking my old Samsung slider phone circa 2007. I still love this thing. No phone has matched it yet. Not even close.
I figured out over a two year period it's only going to be saving me $340 to buy a contract free phone from T-mobile and use the $30 plan vs two year subsidized contract on ATT. That doesn't figure in any extra minutes over 100 that I might use every month. I never use more than 200 or so minutes on my ATT plan now so I have a lot of rollover minutes. I think in the end it might be worth more than $340 just to know I'm not locked in a contract. Still deciding. (currently I using a iPhone w/ ATT 400 minutes / grandfathered unlimited and a G Nexus testing the $30 plan).
