Something to keep in mind with this pre-order deal.
Most credit cards offer some kind of warranty. My american express for instance extends the manufacturers warranty by 1 year, the first three months is protected by theft and accidental damage protection insurance.
The catch? The entire purchase must be made on the card. So if you put $50 down as a pre-order, and they give you a gift card, and you return to purchase it using the gift card, essentially you are only putting $750 of the $800 on your card and thus the extended warranty / damage protection aren't eligible.
I've used the 90 days damage protection and the extended warranty. They issued a full refund to my card both times.
Just something else to consider with the pre-order deal.
Just preordered one over at the Rockaway, NJ location, smooth as butter. No issues, very straight forward. I was the 2nd person to preorder one. Can't wait to get my hands on it!
The pre order money is put on a gift card and does not need to be used at time of purchase.
I was hoping the free trade program was in place still but it expires before the launch.
At 100 dollars I believe selling it myself will net me dramatically more. I expect to get less for the convienence however find charging me for the option is a joke.

I went to the Montgomery, Al store. I was the first one there to pre-order. I walked over to the mobile department and asked to pre-order the Xoom. The saleswoman asked for my phone number to call me when it comes out. She charged my $50 for the gift card and asked me what time I wanted to set up an appointment. I told her and then asked if my 10% off coupon would work (it said "No contract phones"). She said "Yes, it shouldn't be a problem. If not, I will do something, it is only 10%". So I took my receipt and left. 4-5 min. total.

What 10% coupon is this? I asked if they would match Costco if they are indeed $100 cheaper, they said they should be able to.
I was planning on using my AMEX card too for the extended warranty - Have to see if I can just trade someone $50 bucks for the giftcard.

I would like to know about this coupon too. I just preordered at Best in the West Best Buy in Las Vegas.. Store 122 I think. I plan to buy from Costco if I can, but I wanted to hedge my bets. I can always use the giftcard towards a case and dock. I want the speaker dock, but I don't think I can justify 130$ total, technically 80$ just for speakers.

i wanted to get just the wi-fi version for $600 and i just called told by someone at the best buy that there is no wi-fi only very version. according to them i would have to spend 800 bucks on it. is this true?

Oh sorry, I should have mentioned: I am a BB Reward Zone Silver Member. They send out coupons every once in a while. Mine is good during the launch date. (Actually I think it is good until the 24th )

Yeah I agree, I don't usually buy that much from them anymore... just big stuff that you can't really get cheap anywhere else (i.e. MacBook Pro). It also helps when you have known the managers at the stores for 5-9 years. They generally help make things reasonable for their loyal customers. However, I still think the Xoom is overpriced, but the 10% makes it more tolerable. Did anyone notice any accessories in stock at their BB?

I didn't see any accessories in stock. But I have never seen accessories in stock for a device prior to release. Hell, for the EVO I recall they barely had anything in stock on release day. Based on the preorder form, I imagine they are going to have the portfolio case SKU 2103374 and the Standard Dock SKU 2129336 at release. 4 more days.. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Did carrier subsidies start on non-phone devices for contracts? It that the debacle about activation and reactivation?
I suppose, with something like device + activation being $635, plus $20x12, $240. I would still eat a $40 charge on subsidy for a larger up-front discount, for the crap plan.
Activating that, and tethering to my Incredible. Otherwise PlayOn/Netflix will break the bank.

I am hoping the Epic 4G follows a similar pricing pattern so I can order it for $150 on September 1st. This is all hopeful speculation though.

And i assume if you don't like the service or whatever, you have to ship back to this place?

Well from Amazon.com, they don't have their sprint phones on amazonwireless, since it is in beta. I inquired yesterday about porting numbers and it looks like you have to call the provider when you get the phone to activate it and handle number porting stuff then. I am not fully sure about it, but here is the email I got and the link they gave me. Hope it helps.
"Depending on the carrier, local number portability may allow you to move your number from your current provider to a new service provider.
With Sprint PCS phones and plans, you will need to call the provider to start your service after you receive your phone. You will have the option at that point to port your number from your previous provider.
We recommend you consult with both your current provider and the potential new provider to determine any fees.

I believe it's the same as if you were to order from Sprint through the mail. It will ship unactivated and when you get it, you'll be walked through the process of activating and porting the number (possibly over the phone?). It may take a couple hours for the port to move over, but I think it usually happens pretty quickly.

when i preordered this morning through cellular deals, they asked for the account number and phone numbers for porting, thats why I think they activate it, free standard shipping means I could be without a phone for 3 days, thats not going to fly. But best buy is 50 dollars more, I don't have the money to begin with so 50 dollars more is 50 dollars more I'd rather not spend.
well call up cellular deals and ask them, but i don't think that's the case.

With Amazon.com you return the phone to them within the return period and call sprint to cancel ur service and get any refunds they offer. that's how it works.

Just talked 2 reps at Amazon Wireless, they both said, they are not authorized by Sprint to do upgrade, only new contract. Find the other Sprint phone, EVO, there and it's true. It's $200 with a new contract, $500 for existing Sprint customers, phone only, no contract upgrade. So, I guess Amazon is not the way to go for me unless I cancel my existing account (it's month-to-month right now) and establish a new contract again. The reps said, unlike other carriers, Sprint doesn't let them do upgrade ... wonder why.
EVO has been out for a while now and Amazon is still selling it at $200 with a new contract (same as Sprint). Judging from this, there may not be any discount for the Epic either.

You can always try newegg. They have the phone for $240 like wirefly or whoever is doing $240 preorders and they are a bit more reputable and can do upgrades. One thing anyone who is upgrading should keep in mind though, is that upgrade prices tend not to get as discounted as brand new contract prices. Even for the captivate and vibrant you will pay more if you are upgrading than if you are starting a new contract. Makes me glad to be coming from verizon, or actually tmobile since I need to get a temporary 1 month phone and tmobile has the $15 prepaid txting only plan.

When you buy contract cellphones from NewEgg you are not buying them drectly from them, you're buying from a 3rd party that has a contract to show their service on their page so please do not confuse NewEgg's reputation with some mail order cellphone vendor, fact is I know someone who's ordered from there and had some problems.

Good to know, though I imagine it is irrelevant given that all they need to do is set up your account properly and give you a phone, working or otherwise. So long as you are smart enough to pay for sprint's TEP plan, replacing the phone due to any issues other than damaging it or losing it are covered for free at the sprint stores, where things are once again reputable and safe. right?

And you don't make any changes to that line within 6 months or they'll bill you a hefty fine, I know someone who swapped phones numbers after they got a mail order cellphone and got a 300 dollar charge on their credit card for violating their contract with the cell phone vendor which is separate from Sprint's. Other people have reported trying to return a cellphone to a mail order vendor and had their phone lost in the mail which meant they had to pay full price for a phone they actually returned. To me none of those prices are tempting enough since the level of customer service you get is the worst in the business and you really don't have anyone to talk to face to face if ever anything goes wrong, too many strings attached. These phones are much cheaper than in a store for a reason, always been a firm believer of you get what you pay for.

Why would you swap phone numbers after you buy the phone? At least with sprint, if I buy from amazon.com (who according to their page is the direct seller for sprint phones) I need to call in to activate the phone, and handle number porting there, so you only get one number, either a new one or your old one from another carrier. Now if this was on another carrier I'd understand. However knowing these terms and conditions is part of reading the contracts you agree to, and $100+ in savings is in my book, worth the risk, especially with amazon at least. I know they work in my situation, I trust them, and they are the direct seller.

Well there are a number of reasons you may want to swap a number with another on your account, say you don't like the phone and you give it to your daughter or significant other and you want to keep your number so you exchange numbers thats a direct violation of the 3rd party contract since Sprint will cancel the rebate the 3rd party was suppose to get from your sale, see the 3rd party will collect your rebate and make a commission certain changes will void their payment from Sprint and they will come directly at you. That was just a real world example I gave from a friend's experience but if you read reviews from sites like WireFly there are nightmare stories floating around of bad CS and unauthorized charges as well as missing returned phones that get lost in the mail.

How could you end up not liking a phone though, unless of course you didn't try it out beforehand, and/or didn't know about the potential or real problems discovered with it soon after release? I do see your explaining things, but these are all things that shouldn't happen. When you get a phone from these places you need to be 100% sure of a few things
1) You won't return the phone
2) You won't change the contract in any way for at least 6 months, not even swapping phone numbers.
3) Read all of the terms and conditions to make sure there is nothing else problematic.
They can't just add fees if you sign up, get a phone, and pay your monthly bill and change nothing. If they do you can call them up and ask about it, ask where in the contract you agreed to such fees were mentioned. If they can't offer proof, threaten legal action. Customers in America have a lot of power.
I do see what you are saying, I understand that there can be issues when dealing with these companies and that customer service sucks. However when buying a BRAND NEW PHONE, and knowing what you are doing, I don't think there is really anything to worry about other than the phone not making it to you in shipping.

I have already pre-ordered on Sprint and I think I am going to stick to it. Right now everyone is at the same price anyway. The chance that some resellers will sell it cheaper down the road may or may not come and I want it now. I agree w/ ForrelZ, the potential saving of $50 or even a $100 is not that tempting to me. Not that I am rich, but the peace of mind of knowing that I will be dealing w/ Sprint instead of some faceless, out of state 3rd party reseller outweigh the saving (I always get very good services and resolution from Sprint when there is any problem w/ my phone/account.)

True enough, different situations make it more convenient for different people. For me Sprint just chose to release the phone 4 days too late and so I will be at college in VT when it comes out, so I can't preorder in a physical best buy or radioshack, and sprint stores don't offer preorders in vt, there aren't any within the biggest city in vt that offer perorders. At that rate I know there is 0 chance of me getting the phone on launch day unless I walk into a best buy or radioshack and they happen to even carry sprint phones and have non reserved epic 4g's. Even if I do that, I won't be able to keep my current NJ cell phone number, which I am hoping at least MIGHT be possible if I order online from amazon. Given those low chances and the fact that amazon.com does seem to be a safe online retailer of phones, even if the others aren't, I think I don't really mind waiting til the day after launch, just to see if the phone does hit a lower price point. I really am just in the worst possible position here, even without mentioning my verizon contract being up on september 1st and needing to get a tmobile phone and prepaid plan for a month just to make sure I don't end up without service for a few days.
i ended up cancelling with cellular deals and buying through radioshack. no mail in rebates and I got 2 10 dollar off coupons from radio shack which I was assured I can use one on each of the 2 epics we are getting. So the net difference versus online or radio shack is 30 dollar for 2 phones, and radio shack is in walking distance if I need to return the phone and I get it on the actual release date.
So I'm pretty sure Sprint owed me a $100 rebate...I bought my Evo for $300 plus tax ($45), and Sprint granted me a $70 renewal credit for reupping my previous SERO line for another 2 years (afterwards I switched plans when I bought the Evo).
So I get my rebate check in the mail today, and instead of the $100 my check was for $250!
I remember reading that Sprint has done this before, sent people $250 instead of the $100, but I sure as hell am not complaining. My net payment for the phone is $25!

I have no qualms taking the money. The alternative? Talking to customer service for hours, potentially waiting weeks for another rebate...
This is not the first I've heard of sprint doing this, even my friend received two rebates for the same submission before. Either they're not paid enough to do their jobs right, or they're downright incompetent. To be honest, sprints random incompetence in this case and their ability to still provide great service despite this keeps me as a customer, believer it or not.
When I first signed up for sprint I was supposed to get $100 in referrals...i didn't get them but enjoyed my service from sprint anyways...and still referred people.
The mistake is not my fault, I don't know anyone who would take the headache if trying to correct it over cashing the check
Last year when I was working for sprint I upgraded my phone to the blackberry tour and sent in my rebate. I paid 300 for the device and renewed my contract. I got my rebate a month later and it was for 300 dollars. I got my phone for free and my coworker who did the same upgrade got his rebate for 100.
I checked with someone at sprint since I worked there and they told me to keep it. So right now I'm waiting for my next rebate right now and I am interested to see if I get another cool MIR. The last one helped me buy my laptop and if the do it again the next one will help me pay for my wedding.

Ha, it's actually funny you call me a thief for this.
I called Sprint yesterday to report a gameloft game that was mistakenly charged to my account 6 times, instead of once. The charge looked like a single $29.94 charge and I told them $4.99 of it was legit but they took the whole $30 off anyways.. Then they offered me a $70 rebate to reset my contract to begin yesterday, and I was VERY clear about maintaining my Dec first upgrade
THEN they ship a free airrave for a line on my account thats used in a rural area, and waive the mir for it AND removed the spending limit on my account..
Despite all that: Yes, I would let Sprint mistakenly send me money and keep it, especially when (as nhutpham mentioned) the alternative is likely spending another hour or two of my life on the phone with Sprint's courteous but incompetent CS.

I got my rebate last week from Sprint for $100. A few days before that, I got my $100 Visa Gift card from Bluefish (corporate discount package deal). So my total true cost for the EVO was only $99. Well worth it!

you can't possibly compare the $10 fee and keeping money that is not yours.

So Ive heard that the G2 will be available at some point in Radio Shack stores. Has anyone upgraded a phone through Radio Shack? If the price is really 150 with an upgrade (not a brand new contract) I can wait. If this only applies to a new contract I'm preordering with out delay.

My buddy works at RadioShack and apparently his store isn't doing preorders, so call around first to see which stores are accepting preorders. Proceed to ask them if current T-Mo subscribers are eligible.

according to the press release, it'll be new contracts only for best buy.. not sure about Radio Shack though

If Radioshack is offering the phone at a lower price it will most definitely be for new customers and usually existing customers that are past 22 months since their last discounted upgrade.

i talked to some friends that work for radioshack and it will be 150 for an upgrade but they didnt say how long you had to have been on your contract to get the upgrade. i guess the best way is to wait til launch day and try to get one and see if your eligible for the pricing

If you are upgrading get it through T-mobile, thats what I did.
Just call 611 and say "retention" when it asks what you're calling about.
I told the retention rep that radioshack was offering it for $150 without rebate but they
weren't offering pre-orders and asked if I could pre-order for that price.
It is gonna cost me $180 after tax but I was told by my local T-mo store that I
should still be able to get the Mail in rebate which would bring my total cost down to $130
Really you got the best deal so far if you do get the rebate.
I saw some people call loyalty to get it for 150 plus tx, free ship, waived upgrade fee.
But I havent see anyone get the rebate on top of that to be at 130.

Loyalty gave me $99+tax with no upg fee. All in the form of a $180 credit on my account. I elected for $5.99 shipping which somehow mysteriously got upgraded to 3 day select. Now i'm wondering if I could also try processing the $50 rebate, but that's probably pushing it.

I was gonna buy it in the store on the sixth but after reading what you guys paid now I'm thinking I may pre-order it Friday.
Question: When I call should I ask for "loyalty" or "retention" in order to get a better deal. I've been with T-Mobile for more than seven years and have never even been late with a payment. I've been out of contract for the last three years but really don't want to pay full price for this phone. Advice is welcome.

I think either will do, if you have been with them for 7 years they will give you a good deal no matter what. I think what helped me was saying "I really want to get a EVO 4G but if I can get a good deal on the G2 I would like to stay with T-mobile"

Doubtful as Best Buy cannot do anything with your bill. They might be willing to take 35 dollars off the price of the thing, but very doubtful
Is this true? If so I just jizzed in my pants. My family calls me a Costco Evangelist. I was all worried that I would have to return this tablet every 14 days at Best Buy until a wifi-only version came out.
With Costco I might keep it, or just return it once when the wifi-only version comes out. Costco is awesome, beyond their EPIC return window, they also have an almost unlimited return policy for things that stop working. I have returned things 12 months later with no problem.
Were you seriously going to return and repurchase a xoom every 14 days just so you can say you have the thing first?
I'm not sure that that's something you should openly admit to, just seems sad.

Sad, nah. Exploitive, yes. The problem is that I want a wifi-only version, but I need a tablet now. I have been needing one for a few months now, but was unhappy with all the options available. If they would do the wise thing and release the wifi-only version first or simultaneously, I wouldn't have to play games. Or if they didnt mark it up 250$

Take this with a grain of salt but I spoke with one of the phone guys at costco on the 15th and he said they expected to have it for about $100 less than best buy and verizon just like they currently do on the galaxy tab. I tend to believe that considering marking a $500 item down to $400 is a lot bigger of a cut than knocking an $800 item down to $700 is.
I talked to my buddy at the costco (yea i work there myself). The email said they will get the live demo starting on the 22nd. It also said starting the 24th they would get the actually product. It didn't say the price though. You WILL be required to get a month of service. The rumor is about $100 less just like the samsung tab. If i get anymore info, i'll keep this updated. I'm also waiting to get it myself.
Now how about the Wifi version $100 less at $500!!! Oh, what joy that would bring!
I really want this soon, price is my only concern. They better announce the Wifi version next week and say it's coming in no more than 1-2 weeks, I've waited far too long...I can't stand it...

Up on costco site, ordered and email confirmation says should arrive in 7 to 10 business days. It might arrive later than the 17th but i am very happy with my 90 day return policy.

I`m a little concerned about getting this thing rooted without an sd card, and how many developers are actually going to jump on board for some good customizations. I also hate how long it takes for it to charge, i would plug up my xoom while running an errand and come back to a charged xoom. The screen on this tab is beautiful coming from a xoom anyways, i felt the xoom was washed out from the first time i cut it on. If the xoom was the same size and weight as the 10.1 i would keep the xoom just because how far it is along with development and customizing. As far as Costco man 90 day return and two year warrenty using ur AMEX card how can u beat that! Something better comes out in two months just return it no questions asked. Thats worth the wait!

I know Costco is awesome with the 90 days. I actually bought the transformer and loved it, which is why I know I will like this tablet more. With Honeycomb 3.1 being the same on both I really wanted the thinner, lighter tablet. I am using it for work and will be holding it like a clipboard for 2 hours at a time and felt the form factor would be much better for me.

No problem. I dont know the weight of the TF but the 10.1 is not only lighter but more balanced weight wise than my xoom.
We all know that 14 days start from the date it was shipped or purchased from a brick and mortar store, but 90 days is so much better and a no brainer. Thanks for the heads up OP

I pay no sales tax in-store but have to pay the tax online ..... then again, Amazon is "only" 30 days return but no sales tax but it's here a week or 3 earlier. Tough decision: save $30+ and have it next week or pay sales tax but get 60 days extra to return it and wait 2-3 weeks for delivery.
I think I'll stick with Amazon for now .......

I don't know about you, but I can't wait 3 weeks longer... the sooner I get it, the better.

I went the same route as you ipad2 first then transformer. Definitely want android tablet hope this one will be the one.
You could always buy costco online and return to store...
