anyone found any cheaper places to orderfrom? I just reserved through cellulardeals.com No tax and they are selling it for 240. But going to be an aweful B*tch to return if there is a problem. anyone ordered through them? every other place seems to want to charge tax and activation so I'm taking it twice. And this place is slightly cheaper as well.
I'm not expecting preordering, but I do expect Wirefly or more likely Amazon.com to have the Epic 4g at a discounted price. They are who I am counting on. Amazon had the captivate and vibrant for $50 off the new contract price on release day and $100 off the new contract price the very next day. I am hoping the Epic 4G follows a similar pricing pattern so I can order it for $150 on September 1st. This is all hopeful speculation though.
if you order from a place like this, and you port the number, what happens during shipping, are you without a phone for a few days?
And i assume if you don't like the service or whatever, you have to ship back to this place?
I'm debating on whether its worth it or I should just buy from best buy.
Also, amazon charges tax, wirefly i believe doesn't. wouldn't mind getting it from them but they don't have it on the site yet.

Well from Amazon.com, they don't have their sprint phones on amazonwireless, since it is in beta. I inquired yesterday about porting numbers and it looks like you have to call the provider when you get the phone to activate it and handle number porting stuff then. I am not fully sure about it, but here is the email I got and the link they gave me. Hope it helps.
"Depending on the carrier, local number portability may allow you to move your number from your current provider to a new service provider.
With Sprint PCS phones and plans, you will need to call the provider to start your service after you receive your phone. You will have the option at that point to port your number from your previous provider.
We recommend you consult with both your current provider and the potential new provider to determine any fees.
For more information on how Amazon.com supports local number portability, visit:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/?docId=1000452751
I hope this information is helpful, and thank you for your interest in Amazon.com's Cell Phones & Service Store."
I believe it's the same as if you were to order from Sprint through the mail. It will ship unactivated and when you get it, you'll be walked through the process of activating and porting the number (possibly over the phone?). It may take a couple hours for the port to move over, but I think it usually happens pretty quickly.

when i preordered this morning through cellular deals, they asked for the account number and phone numbers for porting, thats why I think they activate it, free standard shipping means I could be without a phone for 3 days, thats not going to fly. But best buy is 50 dollars more, I don't have the money to begin with so 50 dollars more is 50 dollars more I'd rather not spend.
well call up cellular deals and ask them, but i don't think that's the case.
has anyone ever ordered from cellular dealers or wirefly, what happens if you don't like sprint, do you just send it back and they give you all the money back?

With Amazon.com you return the phone to them within the return period and call sprint to cancel ur service and get any refunds they offer. that's how it works.

Just talked 2 reps at Amazon Wireless, they both said, they are not authorized by Sprint to do upgrade, only new contract. Find the other Sprint phone, EVO, there and it's true. It's $200 with a new contract, $500 for existing Sprint customers, phone only, no contract upgrade. So, I guess Amazon is not the way to go for me unless I cancel my existing account (it's month-to-month right now) and establish a new contract again. The reps said, unlike other carriers, Sprint doesn't let them do upgrade ... wonder why.
EVO has been out for a while now and Amazon is still selling it at $200 with a new contract (same as Sprint). Judging from this, there may not be any discount for the Epic either.

You can always try newegg. They have the phone for $240 like wirefly or whoever is doing $240 preorders and they are a bit more reputable and can do upgrades. One thing anyone who is upgrading should keep in mind though, is that upgrade prices tend not to get as discounted as brand new contract prices. Even for the captivate and vibrant you will pay more if you are upgrading than if you are starting a new contract. Makes me glad to be coming from verizon, or actually tmobile since I need to get a temporary 1 month phone and tmobile has the $15 prepaid txting only plan.

When you buy contract cellphones from NewEgg you are not buying them drectly from them, you're buying from a 3rd party that has a contract to show their service on their page so please do not confuse NewEgg's reputation with some mail order cellphone vendor, fact is I know someone who's ordered from there and had some problems.
The cellphone section of newegg is actually operated by:

Good to know, though I imagine it is irrelevant given that all they need to do is set up your account properly and give you a phone, working or otherwise. So long as you are smart enough to pay for sprint's TEP plan, replacing the phone due to any issues other than damaging it or losing it are covered for free at the sprint stores, where things are once again reputable and safe. right?

And you don't make any changes to that line within 6 months or they'll bill you a hefty fine, I know someone who swapped phones numbers after they got a mail order cellphone and got a 300 dollar charge on their credit card for violating their contract with the cell phone vendor which is separate from Sprint's. Other people have reported trying to return a cellphone to a mail order vendor and had their phone lost in the mail which meant they had to pay full price for a phone they actually returned. To me none of those prices are tempting enough since the level of customer service you get is the worst in the business and you really don't have anyone to talk to face to face if ever anything goes wrong, too many strings attached. These phones are much cheaper than in a store for a reason, always been a firm believer of you get what you pay for.

Why would you swap phone numbers after you buy the phone? At least with sprint, if I buy from amazon.com (who according to their page is the direct seller for sprint phones) I need to call in to activate the phone, and handle number porting there, so you only get one number, either a new one or your old one from another carrier. Now if this was on another carrier I'd understand. However knowing these terms and conditions is part of reading the contracts you agree to, and $100+ in savings is in my book, worth the risk, especially with amazon at least. I know they work in my situation, I trust them, and they are the direct seller.

Well there are a number of reasons you may want to swap a number with another on your account, say you don't like the phone and you give it to your daughter or significant other and you want to keep your number so you exchange numbers thats a direct violation of the 3rd party contract since Sprint will cancel the rebate the 3rd party was suppose to get from your sale, see the 3rd party will collect your rebate and make a commission certain changes will void their payment from Sprint and they will come directly at you. That was just a real world example I gave from a friend's experience but if you read reviews from sites like WireFly there are nightmare stories floating around of bad CS and unauthorized charges as well as missing returned phones that get lost in the mail.

How could you end up not liking a phone though, unless of course you didn't try it out beforehand, and/or didn't know about the potential or real problems discovered with it soon after release? I do see your explaining things, but these are all things that shouldn't happen. When you get a phone from these places you need to be 100% sure of a few things
1) You won't return the phone
2) You won't change the contract in any way for at least 6 months, not even swapping phone numbers.
3) Read all of the terms and conditions to make sure there is nothing else problematic.
They can't just add fees if you sign up, get a phone, and pay your monthly bill and change nothing. If they do you can call them up and ask about it, ask where in the contract you agreed to such fees were mentioned. If they can't offer proof, threaten legal action. Customers in America have a lot of power.
I do see what you are saying, I understand that there can be issues when dealing with these companies and that customer service sucks. However when buying a BRAND NEW PHONE, and knowing what you are doing, I don't think there is really anything to worry about other than the phone not making it to you in shipping.

I have already pre-ordered on Sprint and I think I am going to stick to it. Right now everyone is at the same price anyway. The chance that some resellers will sell it cheaper down the road may or may not come and I want it now. I agree w/ ForrelZ, the potential saving of $50 or even a $100 is not that tempting to me. Not that I am rich, but the peace of mind of knowing that I will be dealing w/ Sprint instead of some faceless, out of state 3rd party reseller outweigh the saving (I always get very good services and resolution from Sprint when there is any problem w/ my phone/account.)

True enough, different situations make it more convenient for different people. For me Sprint just chose to release the phone 4 days too late and so I will be at college in VT when it comes out, so I can't preorder in a physical best buy or radioshack, and sprint stores don't offer preorders in vt, there aren't any within the biggest city in vt that offer perorders. At that rate I know there is 0 chance of me getting the phone on launch day unless I walk into a best buy or radioshack and they happen to even carry sprint phones and have non reserved epic 4g's. Even if I do that, I won't be able to keep my current NJ cell phone number, which I am hoping at least MIGHT be possible if I order online from amazon. Given those low chances and the fact that amazon.com does seem to be a safe online retailer of phones, even if the others aren't, I think I don't really mind waiting til the day after launch, just to see if the phone does hit a lower price point. I really am just in the worst possible position here, even without mentioning my verizon contract being up on september 1st and needing to get a tmobile phone and prepaid plan for a month just to make sure I don't end up without service for a few days.
i ended up cancelling with cellular deals and buying through radioshack. no mail in rebates and I got 2 10 dollar off coupons from radio shack which I was assured I can use one on each of the 2 epics we are getting. So the net difference versus online or radio shack is 30 dollar for 2 phones, and radio shack is in walking distance if I need to return the phone and I get it on the actual release date.

ok here goes just bought the phone and got it for $372.00. i checked with t-mobile and google twice. U have to set-up a new line and buy the phone for $179.00 and then cancel with-in 14 days (buyers remorse period). then u keep the phone and pay the new EFT fee of $150.00. the phone comes out to be $372.00 bc those cheap ****s tax you on $529.00 not $179.00. but i have checked with tmobile and google this works i even told them what i was going to do. i am on a family plan but it is in my dads name that is why i am able to setup an account in my name. hope this helps

You sure you don't have to return the phone to T-Mobile? Subsidized phones have to be returned or the ETF has to be paid to the carrier (plus google's $150 equipment recovery fee) if the contract is canceled. Feel free to try it, but I would suspect you get charged for the phone.

Nice! haha
But yeah you won't get the phone for $372. If you could everyone would be doing it. And next time use the search, you'll find plenty more people like yourself.

If you said "I plan to get it, then cancel, and then use the phone on my family plan" then that would make sense as they have already been helpful for people who are trying to get these phones on their family plans at less than full price - though I think there are possibly even cheaper ways of doing it that don't involve paying another $150 to Google.
If you said "If I cancel within 14 days will I pay anything?" then they may have said "No" assuming that you would be returning the phone to google which are the standard terms of cancelling under the buyer's remorse clause.
But, did you call T-Mobile and say "I am going to order this phone, then cancel the contract within 14 days and I will *not* be returning the phone to Google"? If so, then they should have told you that they will charge the $200 unless you return the phone.
The entire reason Google dropped the "equipment recovery fee" from $350 to $150 was because of this $200 that T-Mobile collects from you. You can avoid both by returning the phone within 14 days. You can avoid neither by cancelling and keeping the phone, no matter what the time frame is.
Hey flarbear i told tmobile that i am not returning the phone, and they said that they have nothing to do with the phone bc i bought it form Google not them. I mean i have called them 4 times to make sure of this. I don't understand why everyone on this site is getting mad about this if this works it is good for all. also in the term of sale it says to connect the provider to get their termination fee and i am going by that.
I got mine for $330 because I have my own plan and don't live off my parents.
Just saying, what you're planning on doing constitutes fraud. Something that is a rather serious offense, and if found out could lead to much more than that extra ~$140 that you're "saving". Also, as part of buyers remorse, you must return the phone in order to qualify. And even if Tmo isn't selling you the phone directly, a partner is. And since Tmo is the subsidized partner, they're even more willing to charge you extra fees since they make money off the fees and plans, not the phones.
On a different note, if they are truly, without confusion, maliciously deceiving you, then its a whole different ball game.
ps. Your horrific English may have also confused them.
Actually its not fraud. Everything he is doing is totally legal.
It may be against the spirit of the deal google/T-Mobile are offering, but there is absolutely nothing illegal about it. Which part would you say is illegal and which law specifically would relate to it?
It would be fraud if he were buying the phone and saying it was stolen when it wasnt. I would be fraud if he lied to T-Mobile and said that the phone was broken and that's why he is cancelling. In this case he has a right to pay the ETF and terminate early as per the terms of the sale. He is not obligated to disclose why, or even enter into the sale more inclined to keep it than not.
Google charges you a recovery fee if you don't return the phone. That brings you above the price of buying it unsubsidized.
I assume you'll be cancelling your credit card or whatever payment you made with it.
Way to go thief.
google's terms of sale said:
For example, if the full price of the Nexus handheld device without service plan was $529 USD and the price you paid for the Nexus handheld device was $179 USD with a service plan, the Equipment Recovery Fee you pay will be $350 USD in the event you cancel within the first 120 days of carrier service.

I don't understand why you guys are getting mad and attacking his character when you have a problem with his method. He is trying to test out a potential loophole. That is not illegal or fraud, just trying to beat the system.
we have these things called casinos for such endeavors..
While I find the action morally questionable at best, given the changes in Google's terms of sale for the Nexus One it would probably work. You are entering a contract with a premeditated plan to immediately break it to your benefit. It is at the very least a violation of good faith terms but this may or may not be actionable. Even if it is actionable the chances of either party (T-Mo or Google) bothering is not high.
Prior to the changing of the wording there was little doubt you would pay the full price, but they changed the terms due to the outrage at the "double dipping" return fee.
I have no issue with the OP, I just found it rather ironic considering the thread topic that he was upset google had the audactiy to charge him tax on the full retail price and that they were being cheap. I still don't think this would work considering the whole google "if you change/cancel your plan within 120 days you'll be charged the full price of the phone" deal, but if they've changed the wording I say go for it and be the guinea pig.

You should look into this again. Google lowered this fee from the original $350 down to $150. When it was at $350 it was obvious that you would be paying more, but now that they have it at $150 it is no longer so obvious.
Guys I just wanted to give you a forewarning about T-Mobile's business practices.
I apologize if anyone takes offense but I am simply posting my experience with T-Mobile. I understand I signed a 2 year contract but where I am moving I have horrible service and I am not asking for a sympathy boat either, but if you don't agree with the way T-Mobile handled this, please feel free to upvote this.
tl;dr - T-Mobile's map shows 4+ bars where I'm moving; we (my fiancee and I) get 2... outside and that doesn't include the many dropped calls we get either. I never got a dropped call until I went to the new location. I have to pay $300 in cancellation fees because they wouldn't budge because their map is supposedly "right."

If you guys are willing, please upvote. I'd really appreciate it.
Once your locked in....its pretty hard to get out.
Yeah I'm seeing that now. I honestly loved the service, but now that I am moving, it's no good to me.
Contracts blow. Stupidest thing you can ever do is lock yourself into a phone contract, especially when there is the possibility of moving, and the FACT that in a few months, some OTHER carrier will probably offer a better deal. Might as well avail yourself to the chance!
It is ALWAYS better to buy your phone outright.
Note: I suspect that eventually, the US carriers will be forced out of their contract practices.... we in CANADA even already have a new NATIONAL carrier that DOES NOT OFFER contracts.
I've never understood contracts personally, I hate being tied into anything just because they give you a sparkly new phone. That's why I'm thankful T-mobile have 30 day rolling sim only deals, I can get huge discounts after a year on a newer phone upgrade, get 350 minutes (any network) unlimited text and free unlimited internet (thank you rewards) for £15 a month and can walk away with only 30 days notice anytime.
Thank god for the sim only plan
thats why you get used phones and no contract.. plus being on an employee plan is always nice
You don't need to get a used phone... the carrier will still sell you the phone without contract, just at the "full price". You can also buy your phone from a STORE rather than from the carrier.
Note: The way the contract works, you end up actually paying SIGNIFICANTLY MORE for the phone through the contract than just buying the thing from a store for full price.

You don't need to get a used phone... the carrier will still sell you the phone without contract, just at the "full price". You can also buy your phone from a STORE rather than from the carrier.

The problem is that the full price of these devices is quite high. A lot of people can only afford a decent phone by getting the contract.
Another problem I had when looking at the g1 initially was a lack of good data plans on non-contract deals.
The people that are telling you it's cheaper to buy your phone outright... this really isn't the case for the G1. At launch, I purchased my G1 for $179 in 2 year contract. Unlocked would have cost $399. I needed phone service regardless, so the fact that I was paying for service is moot.
Now, when I moved, I knew I wasn't going to still get service, and didn't want to stick with T-Mobile. So I paid the $200 to get out of contract. That brings the total cost of the phone up to $379. That's pretty damn close to the $399 price point I would have paid for an unlocked phone from the start .
To the OP, your only real choice is to live with it or pay the termination fees. Read every contract you sign carefully. Service outage isn't a reason to break the contract. It sucks, but that's US carriers for you.
I appreciate all of the responses but again, why pay for a service I cannot use? I had no intention of moving until after the contract; things changed, so I had no option. I'll just be glad when contracts like this are over with worldwide; cell phones could get away with murder if they wanted to. BLEH I say, haha.
We will see how things turn out with the FCC and FTC. Maybe my complaint will push them over the barrier and stop advertising fake signal readings? Roughly 5 phones report all the same exact thing, but their map is always right apparently.
BBB will probably just tell me to deal with it, so we will see on that too.
Again, thanks guys.

have you upgraded your radio ?
have you tried using EDGE instead ?
you seem more upset with the contract than the service, and one of those two might help things.
if you're at 2 bars with edge, ya, that's pretty bad. 2 on 3g is about average to bounce around at from my experience. 2 - 4 on 3g can mean a person standing between me and the tower.
good luck
That's why I hate contracts. You get a $600 phone for $150, but you're stuck with it for 2 years. And you envy evr1 who gets a new phone while you're stuck with yours and then in 2 years when you get a settle phone, a new one comes out a month later.
Just as an update, T-Mobile received my complaint from the FCC and took the charges off immediately. I'm only left with the last monthly bill.
Goes to show they do care about you... a little.
So how exactly did you get FCC to contact T-mobile, you write them a letter, eh?
The squeakiest wheel gets the oil.
Good to hear it mate . Generally they won't budge as far as cancellation fees, from my experience.
Well, I certainly woke up to a pleasant surprise. I've been stuck with having to buy the Evo on Wirefly to claim a hundred dollar savings I had won, only to see that the final price is thirty dollars lower than I expected! You pay $169.99 with a 35 dollar activation fee. There's no taxes, and the FedEx shipping is free.
For those of you wondering, Wirefly is a reputable place to purchase from. Two weeks ago, I purchased two blackberry Curves and a Hero from them with a new contract. They waived the activation fee via a promotion, shipped it within twenty four hours of ordering via two day FedEx for free, and the phones arrived in two days after it was shipped. The only problem is speaking to their sales department; it consists of nothing but overseas representatives who are difficult to understand at times and try to push device protection on your devices constantly. If you order online, though, there's absolutely no issues. They allow you to check on the status of your order, and include every detail of the purchase and plan in the sales receipt if you want to make changes.
Just thought I'd share this great deal .
Edit: Oh! I also forgot to mention that Wirefly is a partner of Bing Cashback. When you order through Bing, you get $50 cash back on your account. That brings the total cost of the device down to $119.99. Sounds good to me!
I have used Wirefly 3 times before and they are great! I am impatient and do not want to wait for my phone this time though haha
That sounds pretty awesome! I'm going to have to see what I can do with this one.
If ordering from them do you know if I can port a phone number?

Yes, you can port your phone number through them. I transferred my parent's and brother's numbers from Metro PCS to the Sprint phones without a problem.
I wonder what will happen if someone tries to upgrade who is not eligible for an upgrade and who is still on contract. I went through the motion of buying it there and the final price came to $180 or something. Wonder what would happen after I get the phone.

can't you just call up sprint once your order is processed to add the discount? nowhere in their terms state you can't add discount; it says you can't switch to a lower service plan, but adding a discount isn't lowering the service plan
here's the terms of their instant discount:
INSTANT DISCOUNTS
Wirefly promises you savings in the form of instant discounts with no rebates or gimmicks when you sign up for wireless carrier service. Delivering on this promise means that you must agree to maintain your agreement for a minimum of 6 months after activation. Deactivating your phone, or downgrading features or the rate plan, may lead to additional charges.
When you sign up for wireless carrier service through Wirefly, we discount your phone purchase price by an Equipment Discount amount ranging from $200 to $300. By ordering through Wirefly, you agree to repay this discount if, during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, if you:
Fail to pay your balance due to your carrier each month
Disconnect this line of service
Transfer this equipment to another line of service
Change your carrier service rate plan to a lower monthly service rate plan
Deactivate the email/data feature if one was required at the point of purchase
Transfer/port an existing phone number from another account if this is a new line of service
Replace an existing account with this account if this is a new line of service
Return or exchange your phone and it is not in its original, new condition with no more than 30 minutes of usage
If you break any of these contract provisions, except as a result of a documented service quality issue related to the carrier service, you authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of the Equipment Discount.
EDIT: they changed the price to $189.99
As of 4:30 this afternoon, Wirefly has officially run out of HTC Evos. The site lists the next shipment time in five to seven days. Fortunately, I was able to get my order placed at 4:00. Unless you really want that $50 rebate, I'd look toward other stores.
These things are selling out an alarming rate.
Now it says shipping within 20 days...
Oh man. Still $50 is probably worth it considering I still have my iPhone for the time being.
i know letstalk is getting shipment June 10, but they still have backorders they need to fulfill; don't know any other place where i can get it without waiting for the mail in rebate
sprint online store has them in stock and can receive in 2-5 days, but not willing to pay $1049 now and have to wait for rebates for 2-4 months

You couldn't be more correct. I stupidly placed the order for my parents and brother via Wirefly's sales department via phone, and it was a horrendous experience. It took over an hour for the idiot to understand what I wanted, write my name down properly, and to shut up about the extended warranty and accessories.
That being said, that's what the online store is for. It's just like the rest of them.
Also, wow. Shipping within 20 days? I was 15 minutes away from having to wait a month for my Evo to arrive? Insane.
I got lucky and got my order in before they raised the price. 169 + 50 bing cash back plus avoiding 45$ in taxes here in CA. It arrives tomorrow =).

Holy crap, shut up! Mine is arriving tomorrow as well! . Of course, I placed my order when it was back at $189.99, but it's still a great deal.
Any idea what'd happen if I tried to order this even though I'm not eligible for an upgrade from Sprint? I'm trying to see if I can grab one of these to participate in development. Although, I'm not sure I'm willing to blow $450 for the privilege.
Ok. I'm on Wirefly and I want to add this phone as a new line on a family plan.
I am seeing:
Service Plan: $9.99/month
Sprint Data Pack - mobile web, web-based email, and basic Sprint TV/Music: $15.00/month
4G Premium Data: $10.00/month
What's that $15/month part? If my family is already on the Any Mobile Any Time with data included, is that required?
I want to try and put this in ASAP!

It does look like I can get this for $189 (+$50 bing cashback) if I select that I would like to extend my contract with Sprint. I'm a little curious about this, you'd think that I shouldn't be able to do this, but at the same time Wirefly probably has no idea that I started my contract in November 09. I'm just worried about what happens when I get the phone! Is no one the wiser? Do people just not know? Maybe I should try this out and give you all an update as to the outcome. I'm willing to bet if there's some kind of foul up and a cancellation charge appears on my account, I could possibly settle it with Sprint feigning ignorance. It's not like I want to jump ship or anything after all, I like Sprint.
Hope you find out. I'm on my hero and not due for upgrade or anything... I wanna upgrade to evolution from hero, but don't have hundreds of dollars

I've been following the Galaxy S and Vibrant releases for a while and love the Vibrant. I however have a problem concerning plans. Since I will only be using its Internet capabilities where I have Wi-Fi (college, home, work), I have no need or desire for a data plan. T-Mobile REQUIRES new devices are sold with data plans so my question is.
1.Would getting a Vibrant from Ebay (for ~$500) and using my old SIM be the best option?
2. Can I just walk into a Tmobile store and tell them I want to purchase a RETAIL ($500) Vibrant with no contract or SIM and get one that way (or are they going to add a data plan and ask me for my Tmobile line credentials to do so)?
3. Is getting a Vibrant on contract for $200 + data plan and then cancelling the contract after the 15th day the cheapest option?
I suppose I would prefer to buy it from Tmobile, even at retail price since I get the manufacturer insurance of 1 year (have needed it before) free though if not possible, Ebay is an option too. I'm just looking at getting it as cheap as possible without having to do a 2-year data plan contract.
Thx.
I bought it at T-mobile off contract, however i made some other account changes while i was there so not sure if they require anything account wise when buying off contract.
I see. What kind of changes did you make? Adding a data plan or something else?
Do you think I can walk into a store, and buy a Vibrant for $500 WITHOUT providing any account information so that they cannot associate my account with the phone?
I'd like to keep my contract AS IS currently, and if possible not renew it (it just passed the 2 years mark so I can technically get a discounted phone if I renew it but I do not like T-Mobile's new contracts. I have unlimited texting on my line through a Family plan)
you might try asking this over in the the Tmobile vibrant forum
i believe you can cancel the data plan after or during the first month but i'm not the expert
costco WAS selling Vibrants off-contract (even more plans) for $229. not sure if its still ongoing.
Either costco or t-mobile. At costco they have to tie it it to a new phone line, which you can cancel at any time since you aren't under contact, pretty sure there is no fee.
I opted to but at tmo, and have the price split up over 20 payments interest free. I already had an existing android plan though.

Even More plans are contract plans. Are you talking about Even More Plus plans?
Go by a T-Mobile store and ask or call their customer service. You'll get a much better answer straight from the horse's mouth than you will from here.
I've heard about people trying to get a discounted phone with a new contract or making changes to their plan so they qualify and then immediately change things around in a manner that would disqualify them from the discount after they got it and then T-Mobile hit them with the remaining amount for the full price of the phone in their next bill. I guess it's their way of saying "cheaters never prosper".
If I buy it from Tmobile with ANY sort of contract...Even more Plus or Even More, they WILL add a data plan to it. There is also activation fees for a new line so not only will I have to pay the $500 for an even more plus plan, but I would have to CANCEL the line...in that case I may as well get it off of Ebay and save myself the hassle of all that.
The T-Mo forums are really helpful with everything other than development. Try there or stop at an official T-Mo store. The third party official partner places get paid to sell contracts. I've had some bad experiences on eBay and had to go to resolution with the seller twice on pre-smartphone phones, so beware.
What kind of bad experiences exactly?
If I were you and looking for a SGS I'd buy the full model that has all the extras... or possibly even the version with a slide out keyboard and ffc. The SGS Pro i believe it is.

Nope. A memo was sent out and they raised the price Tuesday morning to $479. Think the $250 was a pricing error.
The best deal is with Bing cashback! $325
Go to bing.com
search for tmobile (you should see gold dollar sign w 35% off)
click on the link to tmobile site then do your shopping
I got my phone for $325 and on top of that, 35% off activation and the $59 plan.
so my total saving was $208
But bing is ending its cashback program at the end of july so better hurry!
I don't see the gold $ when I search t-mobile nor when I do my shopping after clicking through bing do I get the discount.
Is there supposd to be some code you put? Is it possible for you to just post a link?
too bad Bing cashback is gone at the end of the month.

I totally agree! I recently switched our 5 phones over from AT&t and we went with Even More Plus because it's cheaper in the long run and no contract. However, we had to pay full price for the phones. Two of them were basic flip phones, but three of them were Samsung Vibrants at $500 apiece. We bought them at a T-Mobile corporate store and the most they did for us was waive the activation fee (which I found out would have been done anyway as a AAA member) and give us one free car charger when we bought the other two. We shelled out $1500 for the three Vibrants and we could have paid $750 at Costco!!!!! We're still in our 14 day return period, obviously, so if this is all true I'm going to call T-Mobile and see what can be done.
I'm going to get the 3G Xoom but return it once the Wifi version comes out. How long are the return periods at Costco and Best Buy? I've heard good things about Costco, but do I have to be a member there to get the good benefits?

This is true. To avoid the ETF I think you have to adhere to the carriers grace period, which I think is what.. a week?
We are however, talking about a month-to-month device with no ETF. ETF's are only for subsidized devices. I do appreciate you adding that to the discussion though as it is good to consider for normal cellular purchases at Costco.
I am actually glad for this thread because it forced me to verify. I too plan to purchase this device and then return it when the wifi-only version is released. I don't like to do such things, but they really shouldn't release a 3G version first.

It may be, but costco has the agreement with its products company. You can return without a reason, so how are they gonna say no? As an employee, i have personal heard people say when ask why they are returning "because you have a newer model". There is nothing we (as costco employees) can do but say ok. Infact we have one person that on Monday ever week comes in and buys 3 books/magazines. Then the following Monday brings them back and buys 3 more. But not to hijack, so back on topic. I personally will buying one on the 24th at costco, just because of the price.

What price do you mean. Unless I missed something, the only difference in price is a 35$ Mail In Rebate that essentially cancels out the 35$ Activation fee.
To Sirchuk. Fraud denotes illegality. The only illegal exploitation of a return policy that I am aware of is the one in which you purchase an item, and swap it out with a broken one and return it and keep the working new one. I am simply utilizing the return policy lawfully, albeit deceitfully. I do not like to do it, on principal, since I LOVE everything about Costco. I once purchased a TV two days before a Black Friday sale because I was assured I could come in and get a refund for the coupon price. I did this to avoid the lines, lovely. I will only return it if the WiFi Only version comes out within 90 days. If this is released like the WiFi Only galaxy tab, then it wont be out in 90 days and I'll be stuck.
To Bwcorvus. The book guy is a jackass. I know returning electronics when something better comes along is bad, but returning books is really bad. With electronics, I don't get to use said device anymore, or if I get a newer model, Costco is still making money. I actually want to work at Costco, but they have the worst careers section on their site. After finally finding the link, I couldn't get a list of job openings, just positions that exist for which I could blindly apply for.
EDIT: I researched the terms Sirchuk presented. I am seeing that I am the evil consumer from the viewpoint of a retailer. I suppose I am not as good of a person as I thought. Hmmm. I could use an excuse about how evil Best Buy is. They really are though. When I bought an iPad, and was unsatisfied with the device they charged me a restocking fee. I argued at length with them since the return policy did not mention restocking fees on tablets, only computers. They argued that it was a "notebook computer" despite the fact that it's not. It is a new device their policy doesn't cover. They refunded me a month later when they removed their restocking fees altogether.
Either way, as much as I am a conservative, I do have uncontrollable anger at Best Buy. I do however love Costco, because they have never wronged me. If buying something knowing full well that I will likely return it, maybe I should buy from Best Buy who has screwed me and my friends before. Does it count that I plan to keep the device if something better doesn't come along? Should I have to keep a device that is inferior in some way if my purchase is recent? Do I get credit for not returning half-eaten food? I had a salad from costco recently that I hated, but didn't return. I am so conflicted now. Though no matter what I do, I will still sleep fine.
EDIT2: I have one more roundabout possible justification. Capitalism works on the principals of consumers voting with their wallets. Which sends a clearer message. Waiting lord knows how long for a cheaper wifi-only version(the one I actually want), or buying the 3G and returning it for a wifi-only version. My logic is that they need a tangible way to show that consumers like me don't want them to play this carrier codswallop with tablets. They should release wifi-only versions simultaneously, or first. If people like me don't buy the 3G version, then swap it out, how will they figure it out. They don't send surveys. I need them to know that I have the money for the 3G version, but don't want 3G, and furthermore that I won't simply settle for the 3G version.
The ony other thing to point out, if they offered data plans as affordable as they used to.. 20-30$ for unlimited data, I wouldn't be having this discussion. I would simply pay for data every month and happily keep the 3G version. But they are charging a 200$ premium for roughly 50$ in parts and the "priviledge" to pay for 3G and later 4G. Add to that the fact that they offer "month-to-month" data with no contract, but apparently if you dont pay for a month or two, you have to pay 35$ to reactivate. Someone will have to prove a tangible reason for this fee before I will consider it anything but greedy.

Rumor says that costco will have the 3G tablet for $100 less than Verizon/BestBuy.
Also to note, nobody has seen the actual rebate form for the $35 back. How much do you want to bet it's going to require service for at least 2 months?
If BestBuy really is only 14 Days, I may have to renew my costco membership.

Ugh, yeah, 14 days sucks. If Costco really is $100 less, I'm definitely going to renew my membership. Might do it now just due to the 90 days. I don't anticipate returning it, but I didn't think I would with the Nook Color either. It went back on day 30 of their 30 day return.

As much money as corporations make, the brass at those corps make and the revenue the shareholders get.. well, I find no fault in your logic in how you conduct business.
Anyone that says otherwise is just throwing stones cause they have nothing better to do, or are kicking themselves for not being as sharp a consumer.
Policies exist for us to take advantage of... if Costco thought their policy wasn't good for business it never would have seen light of day.

Rumor says that costco will have the 3G tablet for $100 less than Verizon/BestBuy.
Also to note, nobody has seen the actual rebate form for the $35 back. How much do you want to bet it's going to require service for at least 2 months?

I rarely exploit return policies. Most of the time I am optimistic but simply can't live with a device. I simply couldn't live with the iPad, or the Viewsonic G-Tablet. These devices are too expensive for doubts.
It's small potatoes, but consider paying 100$ for a Costco Executive Membership instead of 50$ for the basic. The Executive membership has a bunch of perks, but most notably is 2% cashback at the end of the year on most purchases. If I recall the only normal exception is gasoline. But if you have a Costco credit card you get 3% on gas. It's not much.. but if you get executive membership.. you'd save 14$ on a 700$ xoom.. or 16$ on a 800$ one.
Gold Star Membership
Gold Star Membership is available to individuals who do not qualify for a Business Membership. Gold Star Membership is $50 per year, and includes one household card per primary membership. See the membership counter at your local Costco warehouse for additional information, or call us at 1-800-774-2678.
Executive Membership
Executive Membership is our highest level of membership. Executive Members receive an annual 2% Reward on most Costco purchases, and extra benefits on member services, such as lower prices on check printing, auto financing and long-distance phone service; larger Costco Cash card amounts for mortgage, real estate and home equity transactions; one-year free roadside assistance for vehicles covered through the Auto Insurance Program; and extra travel benefits.

Anyone know if Bestbuy pre-order is refundable? I was thinking, I might just put down a deposit just in case I cannot get it at Costco.

Don't quote me as I can be forgetful. I am 90% sure that I pre-ordered the EVO at BB then cancelled, got my 50$ back.. and went to radioshack. If memory serves BB handles pre-orders by giving you a gift-card which I was able to refund.
Again don't quote me on this, but I do recall that I was on the list at BB but then I went to RadioShack. I think I did that to get a better number because BB already had like 16 people ahead of me. BB refunded me, but radioshack wouldn't since I ended up getting my EVO on eBay from a Google I/O dev.
