N1 Owners running Cyan's ROM - Are you running Apps2sd? - Nexus One General

I have been using Cyan's rom for quite some time now and am absolutely pleased with his work! But as we all know none of Cyan's rom for the N1, the latest being 5.0.2 at the time of this writing, have app2sd support out of the box.
So begs the question for N1 owners running Cyan's ROM, Are you running Apps2sd?

I'm not planning to use Apps2SD.
Simple because when I had my G1, I was new to Androidâ„¢ and apps and shtuff.
Now that I've upgraded to the N1, I now know what apps I like, what review sites to trust, which developers to trust, which types of apps I need/want.
I currently use about 5-7 apps daily that I've purchased.
I doubt I will ever have more than a dozen or so installed, even with trial usage of free apps.
Unless something super AMAZING comes out that I gotta try/have/buy.

Well, I become nervous when I see the internal storage has only 196MB so I decided to go for app2SD with my 16GB class 6 microSDHC card...

I also wish to have apps2sd installed as my disk space getting low. I have actually quite a lot of games waiting to be installed but sad I can't yet. Was thinking waiting for Google to provide native SD card apps install support. - I really hope it will happen soon.

No, I have no need for it.
I only have a handful of apps installed. If I want to play something more taxing than Solitaire or Robot Defender I'll fire up my PS3...

Ditto. I've never gotten into handheld gaming. I'd rather load up Crysis on the PC.

I don't do much gaming either, but why use the phone memory when the SD card is available?
Also it helps when changing ROM's as all my Ext3 apps appear without reloading.
So yes I'm using it and it's great 224 apps installed and 24Mb of my 196Mb used

200mb's is plenty for me. I got a TON of apps installed and still have 100mbs free. So no need for Apps2SD, which also will slow down ur phone a little.

Ditto. Slower start time = no thanks.

I haven't really seen these huge games. I have and play:
Radiant - 5.36MB
Totemo - 3.82MB
Haven't really found anything else on the market that was worth paying for.
I also have everything I feel like I need, and still have 140MB FREE (extra 40 from Cyanogen) of storage on my phone (out of 196MB).

the only reason i use APPS2SD is when i flash new roms or do wipes, my EXT partition is still saved. So when i install/test any new room, apps2sd is enabled and i will have all my apps right where i left them.

Why does the Nexus One not need apps2sd?

Someone told me the Nexus One doesn't need apps2sd. I'm curious why they said that. Is it because it works that way automatically or are they just saying that because of the extra RAM and ROM?
The nexus one has 512 megs of rom. Tons of room for apps at this point there just really isn't much need for apps2sd since there is so much room. Also native ROM storage is probably faster then SD access.

Also I'm pretty sure Google said they were working on encrypting apps so you could store them on your SD card in the future
I installed all my apps that I normally use, plus a few others, and I have 130MB+ left in storage. My G1 started with around 70MB free depending on which ROM I used. I had a 512MB partition (formatted to around 500MB) and usually had close to 400MB free with my apps on it. I think we'll be fine for a bit, but when really, REALLY nice games come along to take advantage of the phone's power, we'll need microSDHC storage.

50Mb RAM? Is this a problem?

I only have 50Mb of RAM, running stock Google ROM with Google Update.
I don't have a huge amount of apps, maybe 35...
Is this a problem?
What is the best way for me to get more free RAM?
I don't want to wipe if possible...
No, its not a problem, nor is 20MB free, etc. Android free's memory as needed by closing app's on its own. More memory will be had with kernel 2.6.32 when highmem for arm support is added. This may or may not change the amount of free ram, depending on how many apps are loaded to your phone, as its again, dynamic.
I had down to 20 mb of ram and the phone was very laggy those time. Had to restart it and everything was normal again.
What do you recommend for not having those kind of situations?
One option is to install a custom ROM
Second one is to use a task killer everytime.
If you want to unlock your Bootloader (void warranty) then go for Cyanogens MOD, aotherwise install something like App Manager.

I'm almost always operating at 20mb free without issue, I've even seen 5mb free, and still no issue. Its not windows xp, you don't need all kinds of crazy free memory to operate.
Personally I don't think Google will really have an issue with you unlocking the bootloader. Generally they seem to want people to play with it.
Flash one of Modaco's custom ROM's which has Himem and you'll have 160-230meg of RAM spare all the time. Blazing fast!

It's not Google one has to be concerned with. Perhaps the OP isn't interested in voiding their warranty quite yet, or ever.
Personally, I could never go back to the stock image but those on this site who are all about cutting edge are not the target audience I'm afraid

[Q] Do or Do Not: Moving apps to SD?

I've moved up from a G1 rooted to the MT4G, so I've always had apps2sd. It's just a necessity with the limited space.
My question is on the MT4G, since we have 1GB of internal space, do I really even need to move any apps to SD? What would be the pros and cons of moving apps to SD on this phone?
Right now, I'm still stock, not rooted, with 96 apps installed and I still have 850+ mb internal space.

I'd say don't go for it. See my sig; I'm also leaving behind my G1 where yes, it was definitely a necessity. However, even with a C6 SD card, things were noticeably slower off the SD vs internal storage. It's just not worth the performance hit right now when you have ample internal storage.
I dont see a reason to move them with a 1gb of space, that will be increased once devs figure out how to unlock the partition.
I had 2 on my N1 with only about 150mb to play with
cool. I wondered about that. I just moved everything that got installed on SD back to phone.
no a2sd until i run out of space for apps.....which i dont see happening for myself.

Yeah... a gig is really a crap-ton of space for apps like these... maybe when apps get huge after gingerbread, there may be a use for moving some less used / less critical apps.

LagLagLag (FIXED!)

FIXED! See my post at the bottom
I moved to straight talk and away from my Evo3D on Sprint last month, and decided I wanted to do a lot of gaming with my next phone, and didn't want to spend a ton of money for a newer unlocked AT&T phone on craigslist. I picked up a play fairly cheap, and I had the bootloader unlocked, rooted, installed Doom Kernel, overclocked a bit, and installed some rom tweaks (still running stock).
However, it seems that the stock launcher, while pretty great ( really like the folders in the launcher, etc) just seems to lag like hell all the time.
I have things overclocked with the smartass governor. Seems like launching of apps seems to take forever sometimes as well, and the problem's gotten steadily worse as I've gone along.
From my android experiences, stock roms are generally this way, so I'm curious if anyone else has similar experiences to mine with the play...and if you've found a nice rom with good gamepad compatibility (I don't ever use the joysticks btw) that seems to take the lag out of the device.

Which class SD card are you using ?
When internal storage gets to about 40ish mbs it starts to chug along.
The 512mb of ram can also be an issue. eg if I'm browsing a very memory hungry website, and I hit the home button, all the widgets and icons will have to reload and it takes a while to get back up to speed.
It's pretty smooth most of the time though. Stock rom, stock everything.
Use SuperCharger V6 to avoid these home launcher reloads

u still use stock sd card that have a bad read speed, try to upgrade a better one lik class 10...
Definitely not a class 10, those are horrible for gaming, I'd rather recommend a class 4.

ANDROIS ICS User Manual?

All right so this may be strange but...
I had no problem creating a bootable SD card for the Nook Color. Wanting the latest and greatest, I went for CM9.
I got Samian's larger CM9 image file so I could use the cm9 nightlies, which are too big for the boot partition of CM7 build.
Anyway, it all went great. Smooth as butter, no crashes, no fuss. So far everything works....EXCEPT, I don't know exactly how it IS supposed to work, since this is the first and only android device I've owned.
So I am in the strange position of having no real technical issue -- but I do have significant "user" questions.
Here are a few. 1. Android Marketplace seemed to install fine. But I end up going to google play when I hit the "shop" button. Is that right? Or is marketplace some kind of integrated app I should be able to use without google play coming up?
2. Can I access the files on my internal Nook Color memory -- i.e. can I read my books, or do I have to put them on the SD card?
3. Are all my apps always on? Is there a way to "shut them down"? Do I need to? Coming from a PC environment, I like to shut down a program when I'm not running it.
4. My "system" information shows (when look at running programs) that I have only about 500MB of RAM. Is there a way to use some of my SD card for more RAM -- or any other way to increase it?
5. Any kind of general user guide for CM9 out there? I realize there probably wouldn't be one specific to Nook Color, since in a sense this is very elaborate hack, but I am starting from scratch.
thanks so much. I've enjoyed the messing around, and I'm thrilled at how well it's gone so far. I got a lot of info from xda.

1. Market just was upgraded by google to Play Store. So it is operating properly.
2. You can access files from internal media memory (emmc). But you may have difficulty reading the nook books stored there. They are encrypted for your nook account (DRM). But you can install the android version of the Nook reader and log into your account and redownload them to your SD.
3. Don't worry about always on apps. Android was built for multitasking and has a very efficient memory management system. It does everything for you. It puts apps in memory for you so that when you go to them they are ready to start. Just being in memory is not using processor time so it is not a drain. Also Android will automatically remove apps from memory if it needs to.
4. Because of 3 above 512MB is a lot ram. There is really no need to expand it.
5. Off the top of my head I don't know of a manual, but I'm sure there are some out there. Just google search.
Most of the questions are Android related matters, so any google search about general Android, would do the job.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate it.
Two follow up questions:
I am running ICS/CM9. Only been at it a day or so, but so far, no real problems. The screen might be *slightly* less responsive than the NC system, but it's not clunky -- maybe just a little slower, a little more prone to having to tap some things more than once.
1. I've seen many other posts of people raving about CM7 and how stable and zippy it is. Would I benefit from switching to CM7? Is it faster/more responsive than CM9 currently?
2. I was thinking of just finding another cheap micro SD and installing CM7 on it (rather than the dual boot thing, which would require me to wipe my current SD and start over). Any reason it wouldn't work to run CM7 off a different card?
thanks again!
It would be worth it for you to get another SD card and load CM7 on it to see the difference. I have used both CM7 and CM9 and love the interface of CM9 but do prefer the stability of CM7.
Learning your way around the systems can.be daunting, but stick with it - Google your questions, read the forums here. You will learn loads just using your nook.

RevTom,
Only use a Sandisk Cl 2 or 4 microSD card for an SD install. Others don't work as well. This has been well documented here on XDA many times.
There is a high likelihood you will have a bad experience if you don't follow this advice.. (force closes.. slow response, ramdom re-boots, etc)
Search the web.. they are about as inexpensive as the rest. Sometimes Radio Shack has a decent price on them.. sometimes not..

1. Just a little faster, more stable. But you give up the tablet interface.
2. Only reason not to is inconvenience of manually switching the cards and of course your media files go with each card. But it will give you a chance to look at it and decide which you want.

Yes, I've seen those threads -- maybe I can add some new info. I went with a SanDisk class 6 16GB. I didn't see the class-rating discussions until too late. There are some who also recommend staying 8GB.
However, with CM9, I've had no trouble using the class 6, 16GB. Maybe I just got lucky, or perhaps CM9 can handle the 6.
I'm glad your class 6 is working for you. Have you seen Racks thread in the development section for a dual boot SD card with both Cm7 and Cm9 on it? I did that for awhile. His instructions are pretty straight forward. You can have your books, pictures, music, etc. on the.SD card and use them with both systems.

Yes, I've seen the the thread. I would still have to wipe what I have so far, and I like the version of CM9 I've already got -- believe it came from someone called "Samian" or something like that.
One final question. For a single-boot SD OS, anyone have thoughts on the best CM7 to run with?

My own setup involves Cm7 at main memory with 233 nightly and sdcard with Racks dualboot (kang Cm7 and ICS).
You should consider the fact that its easy to try other systems by just swapping Sd cards. Then you will find what you really like.
Unleashed from my Nook Color at 1.2G
Here's where I got my original CM9
android.sphsolutions.net/Encore/Nightlies/Misc/
The "generic 1.3" creates a larger boot sector to accommodate the larger cm9 nightlies.
Since the first post, I left that one on my larger, faster card (class 6, 16GB), and tried Racks' Dual boot. Cm9 seems to run a little zippy-er there, but I can't tell if that is the build or it is the fact that I'm running that one from an 8gb class 4 card (which is said to be better than a class 6).
Still favoring ICS/CM9 over CM7.
Any thoughts on file management for the free SD space? I am having mixed results with plugging the Nook into the PC. Sometimes I have full access to the free space/storage on the SD, and sometimes it shows up without any folders or files at all. (this is in Racks Dual boot, CM9)
Also, anyone remember off-hand where I can find the thread that tells me how to make CM9 the first (primary) boot instead of the secondary? I've traveled so much ground in these forums lately...
