Can i use the 10$ data plan with my n1 - Nexus One General

I wouldnt really use the internet i would just download apps and use some of the apps that require the internet (youtube, goggles, maps, weather, pandora etc.) Could att find out i have a smartphone if i dont use the broswer? Thanks

guessing you mean AT&T
you could start off at $15 for the data-unlimited plan.
After a week you will get a SMS saying they have added $5 for messaging.
After another week they will push you into their "smartphone plan".
Yes they have a way of detecting the Nexus now.

IM application gone?

Did they take this out? I'm not talking about G-Talk. The IM app that has YM, AIM, and MSN. I can't find it in the Launcher
The IM app from the other phones charged against text messages to send/receive. So I say good riddance. Besides, there's plenty of much better apps that handle those services in the marketplace.
i believe it uses data not sms. Otherwise I would rack up 10,000+ sms a month
but what's a good IM client out there then besides the one HTC provides?

The G1 documentation made it very clear that only GTalk worked over data and that other IM clients used SMS.
I think the real reason you don't see it, is that this is not a T-Mobile phone (who provided that app), but it is actually closer to an AOSP type of build. The carrier adds their own applications and the carrier didn't design it.
Hmm...my previous phones were the G1 and MT3G. that's true. there is not T-Mo branding anywhere so it makes sense that the IM client is T-Mo's app, and they probably do something to tweak the plan to exclude SMS from the IM client...otherwise they would have pages of statements.
But in any case, what's a good IM client from the market?

Just wish they had BeeJive for Android!

Messenger like BB messenger

Quick question is there any or only like GTalk one? I am looking to send messages over my data plan and I am not sure if GTalk is like instant messenger that only comes online when I send or receive message Like BB messenger does?
Gtalk is googles equivelent to bb messenger. Works in exact same way buddy
-------------------------------------
..
are you sure? I am moving form BB to Droid world and want to move my other phone and use same way and not to pay for SMS extra or being charged extra for data used by GTalk being online all the time
Its usage is minimal and is used in your allowance for net but remember bb users can't gtalk and gtalk can't bb.

..
** bb users do have gtalk, I've talked to my friend with it before.

Why you can't talk on Gtalk with a BB ? Sure works perfect

BB messenger-like app for android

I've been searching around for something like this. All it needs is phone signal. This would be convenient when I'm in another country. So yeah, are there any apps like this? Paid included
The ones i can think of are the ebuddy, im+, meebo and imeasy
yeah but those require data connection. BB messenger doesnt, it sorta like has its own private network
But then wouldnt you need a connection to the BBM servers? Which most likely means u need a cellular or data connection.

You definitely need a data plan for BBM it just used signifigantly less data than most cause it does all the thinking n rendering on blackberries end.
On that note, the bad news is that there is definitely nothing comparable in android. Check ebuddy but you're still going to need a data plan, even with a BB.

Try kik messenger, I dont think you need a internet connection for it, I use it all the time. It's in the android market, and its free.
They all use either a data connection or sms as far as I know. What other ways are even possible? Using the GPS to send it over a satellite, or ultra far reaching bt/wifi...
PS:The last sentence is sarcasm...
google talk

BBM uses an internet/data connection to acces BB's servers. You therefore need a data connection/plan to use BBM.
If you're looking for something similar, try the Ping/Pingchat app - it's cross platform (BB, iPhone, Droid) and works in a similar way to BBM (using Ping's own server network).
You'll still require a data connection (need not be wifi, or 3g for that matter) - so you ay even want to stick with something you already use on your computer (google chat, msn, skype etc via multi IMs like Nimbuzz, Fring...the later two can use Skypeout to make VOIP calls)
All apps need a data connection
WhatsApp is your best option. However, it's still in closed beta for Android. When it is released, you will be able to chat with iPhone, BB, Symbian, and Android users by just having their phone number in your phone book.
Google Talk!
Oh I see. I was under the impression that bb messenger works over cellular networks because it has its own network. Thanks for the clarification guys. Mehh blackberry step aside for android

[Q] Tmobile plan question

I'm a Tmobile subscriber in the US. I do not have a data plan, and don't want one. What I want to do it get an Android-based phone such as a MyTouch and be able to use it for talk and for text, but also to be able to get online via WiFi. Before I hunt for a phone, can someone tell me if this is even possible?
If you get the phone through T-Mobile they require you to get the smart phone unlimited data plan. That's true for any smart phone. You can get one off of eBay and just put your SIM in it without telling them and you wont have to get a data plan, but keep in mind that you have to have a data plan the first time you use the phone because you have to login or create a Google account on first use. After that you will not need data and can just use wifi.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if it is possible to root this phone and then update the google account info to eliminate the need for a data plan at all?
I have a Chinese android tablet and I had to do that to get the android market to work with a method such as this: Sorry about the funny URL but my acct here is not allowed to post URLs slatedroid dot com/flytouch-epad/3763-market-app-working-flytouch-epad.html. I'm wondering if a similar hack would work in this case.
As far as I know there's no way to root until you actually gain access to the stock ROM, which is only do-able with data.

How about borrowing the sim card of a data subscriber just to activate the phone ? Would that work or would I be stuck with their Google acct?
No that would work. You just login with a Google account so its nothing specific to the SIM.

Email used 4GB of data in 4 days?

I haven't had this problem before, though for some reason my email decided to use a ridiculous amount of data in 4 days, I'm not sure why and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I haven't changed anything since I got the phone. The settings are to check every 15 minutes in the background for new email. For now, I've restricted the background data, but I'm wondering why this happened. Any ideas?

Did you figure out what happened ?
My wife today got data usage warning and it showed 3GB of data used by email from Feb 4-6.
I put data restriction on the phone and will call provider tomorrow to see if the can cut off data if it reaches certain number.
Thank god we have 6gb monthly or there would be some insane bill to pay.
Wow... Wtf lol. That's crazy.

You can always set a warning and also set a limit on your android phone so it doesn't use up all your data or go over. It's extremely helpful.
Also, check your data usage through your carrier first. It's possible that the phone may have calculated the data wrong (could be a bug or something).
Third, if it has really really used 4gb of your data then it maybe because you synced all your emails and while syncing all the emails, it may have amounted to 3-4GB (which doesn't seem possible to me). Good luck!
what sort of email is it? pop3 or is it an online system (hotmail, gmail, yahoo)
if you set it up for IMAP or some sort of setting to sync your entire online based mailbox with your phone it could easily bring in that much data... after years I finally cleaned out my gmail and am back down to only using 2GB haha
Isn't syncing with email done when you setup new email account ?
The phone worked fine for 2 months and this happened all of a sudden without adding any new additional email aco****s.
Could it be you got emails with large attachments like photos or pdf files? If photos are not resized they can easily run over 3 MB a piece. Same thing with pdf files they can be huge.
Sounds to me like another Auto-Sync funjob. When my girlfriend got her old HTC, it plastered 450mb in just 3 days syncing only e-mail. If I was you, I'd turn it off. Auto-Sync that is. Unless you desperately need it sync'd then I don't see the harm in simply opening the app and clicking refresh
When you first set up your email account on your mobile device, make sure next time you sync your mail via wifi. If the image download button is check under settings, un-check it.
That's ridiculous, I'm on my email every day, pandora for hours, youtube constantly, and amazon mp3 cloud, and have only used 550MB since January 31st.

I won't disagree that that is a crazy amount of data use... I'm almost done with my first month on the tmobile $30 plan (5gb) and dispite downloading a few movies via torrent, a good bit of netflix and hulu, LOTS of pandora and streaming music from my google and i'm right around 4gb so far after trying to kill all 5gb...
Well sinfamy, it all depends how much you use it. I can say that in 2 days, according to my device data usage I've used 728mb of data.
