Is there any way to remove the dust from the screen? I can't exchange mine because I'm rooted and the bl is unlocked so.... ya.
Take a look here...think there are some tips: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613115
well I already peaked at this thread and didn't really find a remedy for dust already being there so...idk if taking the phone apart is my only alternative. do you think compressed air will make a difference?

i got mine replaced and the bootloader was unlocked. dust is a manufacturing defect, not something an unlocked bootloader can cause. you should check out the thread that has already been made for this issue.
No fix for dust under the screen, aside from disassembling the phone, cleaning it out, and reassembling it. Some people have had luck getting HTC to replace the handset under warranty even with an unlocked bootloader... can't hurt to call them and try.
oh wow I never realized that. I'll give them a call tomorrow. if this works I'll lose my engraving right? I really don't wanna lose that because I like it so much
But really, do think it's really worth it for me (or anybody) to go with a replacement even if it's not even that much dust. I don't know the specific device has really grown on me and i don't know if a couple specs of dust are worth replacement. Also i could also be receiving a unit with a defective screen, dead pixel, bad camera sensor, ghost like screen, a purple hue screen, you name it idk
Well I got mine replace just this week. It took them only like a day to ship it to me, and all I had to do was ship mine back. Everything went smooth. My phone's bootloader was unlocked, and I bricked it by pulling the battery while it was updating the radio. I was $-530 in my bank acct for about 3 days lol, glad that's over with.

Just thought I'd let you guys know. I just called HTC support to try to get my phone repaired. I read other post saying It'd be a good idea to let them know over the phone if it's unlocked so I did. Pretty much hung up the phone on me there, said they can't /won't do anything, even though it's a hardware issue. If i bricked the phone, I can take responsibility in that, but this is just BS.
Anyone else have a similar issue or way to circumvent this? I'm tempted to just brick it and get it replaced as they won't see the unlocked.
Any input would be great. There is a **** ton of dust too.
How long have you had the phone? I got mine three weeks ago but this dust issue is the reason I haven't rooted. So far I have had no issues. Does anyone have a high Res pic of the dust issue? Kind of curious to see it.

Mine are in the dead center - 4 or 5 big ones that are super noticeable. and a lot of itty bitty ones
I just called again hoping to get someone else. I did. I got the exchange process going and they are sending me one. I just am worried about once they review it. Last time when I sent it in I had a manager call me back personally and leave a message. Wish me luck guys. And if it comes down to it. Deny deny deny !

Yeah, I did.
Yesterday afternoon the trackball on my N1 stopped working. it'll scroll everywhere but left. Nothing obviously wrong with it, just wont go. thought i'd give it a minute, push and play with it, see if something gives, but no dice. This morning I called HTC, no questions about bootloader which should not affect a hardware issue anyway. Having a replacement sent today.
Now I'll send this phone back, and they will assumably examine and test it. I would agree with any non-hardware issues being rejected due to unlocked bootloader, however if they contact me and say they will not cover the trackball because of this, I will bite the bullet and pay for the repair or replacement, and won't even be pissy about it. I'm just curious what HTC will do, being as this is obviously a hardware issue which unlocking cannot affect.
Seems 50/50 whether they will cover it or not really.
i had a h/w issue and an unlocked bootloader and they still charged me $55 for a replacement
good luck
As of yesterday my trackball has started being annoying, has trouble scrolling downwards, though is not completely broken. I am reluctant to do an exchange, because mine is a special import and has an unlocked bootloader.
Do you have the number for US HTC anyway?

no just curious because I myself am looking into buying this phone. I don't want to repeat someone else's mistakes (if there are any mistakes at all). Not related to this but i've heard plenty of times where someone has said "if I was a little more careful, this wouldn't have happend". I'm trying to find a bunch of those situations so I don't fall for them. Thats it..

i have that as well on cyanogen 506. honestly it should be fine.
if it sticks, clean the ball with a very miniscule amount of alcohol, it'll break the dirt down and youll be good to go. or just dont think about it everytime you touch it (i used to be that way and now im better off. ha)
oh and a friendly tip.
EVERYTIME you're done using the TB, WIPE IT ON YOUR SHIRT or something cloth. thats the best way to clean it. up and down on your shirt. side to side even too

Needless to say I think i've heard every problem you could possibly have with this phone happen. From the screen cracking from a 1 foot drop to the camera app not working, to this post. However, I'm going with the n1 anyway. I'm sure that for every bad nexus one, theres 1,999 good ones. Anyway the only thing I need help with is finding a good case that will prevent damage because I have been known for dropping my phone alot.
My friends have told me to go with the "seidio innocase II" and others have said get a crystal silicone case. What do you recommend?

I've had it since release. I ordered it about 30 minutes after the google.com/phone site was up and running. I am always careful with my devices, and use cases and protectors. My phone has never been dropped or mishandled. By way of example, I also got my G1 on release day, and when i got my nexus I was able to sell it on Ebay for $250 with a review about the immaculate condition of the phone he had received. He said it looked like it just came out of the original box.
I hold babies with less precision and attention.
Easy fix
I had the same problem but mine wouldn't scroll down. After getting the run-around on the phone from HTC, I tried to fix it myself. It took less than 10 seconds.
Just grab the ball using your finger nails or something similar, and twist the ball a little bit. it'll loosen up built up dirt and oil on the sensors, and viola! You should be able to scroll again. If not, then you need a replacement.

You know, I would try this if the replacement hadn't been delivered to my doorstep like 5 minutes ago. Downside = I suppose I will need to run stock for a few weeks in case they refuse to accept the return because of the bootloader. Will make me appreciate devs all the more.

No insurance on the phone? I was going to say get a replacement screen on ebay but I just checked the prices and my god its not worth it.
Would probably be worth keeping it. Parts prices will fall in the next few months and could replace the screen pretty cheaply if you hold on to it.

save it for a rainy day. spare battery or whatever isnt damaged. i dont see the need to start a thread to help make a decision about something that does not help anyone else on XDA.

I claimed it as lost, It fell off on a very busy road and I wasnt to keen on trying to stop traffic to get it. On the way home it had worked its way closer to the side of the road and traffic was a lot lighter so I decided to venture out (mainly just to see if my SD made it). I had already made the claim though as lost, since I didnt plan on trying to retrieve the phone.

If there is a problem might be best to go through Samsung for a repair instead of Verizon to just get a refurbished device. That's what I'd do.
Before you reset/return...take your battery out for 10 min. or so...and then restart your device...maybe the battery voltage or calibration is causing the speaker interference...it's worth a shot.

Well I think it was the battery. The microphone seems to work now. Did 3 voice recordings. All of them came out crystal clear with and without background noise.
Good to hear...it wouldn't hurt to purchase a new charger too.
I'm gonna hang on to the charger, its the first offical charger I've had in awhile. My DINC, nexus and gs3 all burned through their real charger oddly quick. I think its the weather where I'm from its been 111°-120°f for all of September

Getting the run around from Motorola, they say its physical damage which voids the warranty and they are not sure they will replace it. This is a replacement for my original which was defective but the warranty should have transferred to this one. They say they will get back to me in 24 hours after someone higher up looks at the pics I sent in. I don't use it any more as I bought an iPhone 6 and went to the dark side but they still need to replace it.

I'd say from the pics it seems obvious the damage came from the inside, where user damage most often comes from the outside.

Since it is a Developer Edition unlocking the boootloader is covered in the warranty (hence the higher price).
Overclocking a device should never make the battery cook/explode. My guess is the damage was not inflicted bij an exploding X8 SOC.

The only thing that would have caused that is a failed battery. It appears to have puffed up to extreme levels.
Better then bursting into flames at least...
I'm glad at least it didn't caught on fire and burn down your house.

No it was turned off for a week and sitting on a table.

Users can cause damage on the inside. This is a Developer Edition, so it could be unlocked, rooted, overclocked, etc. Just saying...

It's fully stock except for the unlocked bootloader and as have stated previously it was turned off and disconnected from the charger just sitting on a table.

Since it is a Developer Edition unlocking the boootloader is covered in the warranty (hence the higher price).
Overclocking a device should never make the battery cook/explode. My guess is the damage was not inflicted bij an exploding X8 SOC.

The issues tech support were having last night are: 1). this is a replacement phone for my original which had cell radio issues and they weren't sure the original 1 year warranty transferred over to this one 2). physical damage voids the warranty as they assume it's caused by the user dropping it 3.) they've never heard of a battery exploding when the phone was turned off and not charging. Having the phone in hand its obviously it's from an exploded battery I offered to send it in to them so they can verify this. I was told I would hear back in 24 hours as to if they will cover it under warranty once someone higher up looked at the pics I sent in.
Kinda worried about mine doing the same. I have a dev edition as well and over time the phone's back has developed a few bulges and feels uneven to the touch. Hopefully it doesn't actually explode though. I'm not too interested in changing phones again.
Been almost 48 hours since I contacted customer support and still no word back on if they are going to cover it under warranty. If I get a replacement I'm going to sell it as I got the new iPhone 6 and am happy with it and I still have a Nexus 4 to play around with.
Hey maybe you could do us current x owners a solid and donate it to someone on the PA legacy team so we could get official PA builds. Pretty please

He'll need to send the phone in. They don't take your word it's broke and just send you a new device. ?

I didn't have high hopes but I thought it was worth a shot lol. Hopefully he can get it straightened out soon. It's a good thing he has another phone to use, I'd be pissed if I was phoneless this long.
Three days later and still no answer back so I contacted them again and this time got it moved to repairs escalation reports who are closed on weekends. Tech support guys on chat keep saying well that's physical damage and voids the warranty and you have to pay for repairs. The one I talked to today actually said batteries are only covered if it explodes on first few charges. WTF? Three days ago I offered to send the phone to them to verify its an exploded battery but they said no the pictures were enough. If I had bought this through a carrier I would've had a new phone by now, Verizon always replaced my defective phones on the first call no questions asked.
