My HD2 freezes/crashes after connecting to USB in my PC - HD2 General

After installing Miri's rom 6.5.x my HD2 started crashing every time I connect it to the PC whether it is on ActiveSync or DiskDrive mode. It sometimes crashes right after I connect it , but most times after I disconnect it. I have installed Steve007 and SUperboy007 Elegance theme , Midomi , ManilaBirthday , Klaxon , NetRipper's KeypadLedControl , CorePlayer 1.3.6, AppToDate, JWMD Icon Changer, TouchPal, cleanRAM, TorchButton, Chainfire HD2 3D Driver Patch, Mosko.Mobi FIM , Jaguaralani HD2 Action Screen , SRS WOWHD , Resco Explorer and Resco Photo Manager , Xtask , SPB Backup and BSB Tweaks 1.6.
Could you please tell me what is wrong ?
I did hard reset after I flashed the rom.

Anybody?

your whole device or just audio manager?
dont know if this is of interest to you:

My problem is different. My whole device crashes and needs a soft reset after I disconnect it from the PC

Have you installed any of those to the storage card? Because the storage card is not available to the phone when you connect in file mode, though it should be ok in active sync mode. Most of those things should not be installed on storage card anyway.
Also, when you connect the phone it seems to me that it starts to prepare the pre-selected option right away, so if the last time you connected in file mode, this connection will be opened as soon as you connect, and if you change to another connection, the first connection is dropped and the other opened. To avoid this you could go into the usb settings and change connection mode before inserting the usb cable.

I've found my HD2 the same problem. As most of my apps were installed on SD card, when I connect the phone to PC, it's OK until I run an app that was installed on card while the phone remains connected to PC. Afterward, the phone freezes without any word.
Just a piece of my own experience...

Are there any new hints on this item?
My HD2 also freezes, as soon as I disconnect from USB, using hard disk mode. (When using USB to ActiveSync, there are no freezes).

this used to happen to me 2 months ago, but i cant rememeber what was eactly the reason, it may have been 'a theme, task manager or as i rememeber i suspected G profile '...

nothing of these is installed on my device (beside the OEM task manager).
Thanks anyway!

Just try to give it some time. Due to the fact that windows as well as several programs use some kinda autoplay options when external storage device are connected it may take some time until you can use your device. Mine freezes for seconds to one or two minutes until it can be used.

I remember when I made a rom and it didn't include a few oems in my kitchen, it caused freezing when I tried to access the sd card when connected to the computer
have you flashed a new rom to see if the rom isn't the problem?

I only flashed the new official Vodafone 1.72 ROM.

Exactly same kind of problem in HTC touch HD
I know I am discussing this in HTC touch HD2 forum, but I have HTC Touch HD and facing exactly same kind of problem. Have Upgraded from 6.1 to 6.5. Worked flawlessly for 5 months until now. Phone freezes in the Today screen right after connecting to computer thru USB and have to resurrect by resetting. I have Winterface UI installed. It used to work fine before. Please help.

I have noticed after many many efforts and after reading many subjects about the freezing issue, and after almost dumping the HD2 in the garbage, that the reason for this problem is the SD card 32 fat. I have switched a couple of 8GB cards and the system freeze starts within minutes. Then I copied every thing onto a 4G card 16fat and the mobile is flying since then.
Also avoid spb-traveler as it has a conflict with the device making it very slow and full of errors.

Still a problem...
I was excited when I saw that someone had posted on this subject, as I too am plagued by my phone crashing when its connected to USB to the pc. Unfortunately, the post was from a long time ago. I'm using the newest T-mobile rom 3.14.531.1 and it occurs EVERY time I plug the phone into my Windows 7 computer or my Mac...
I don't specifically believe that it's related to the SD card itself, because I can connect in Android via USB and this isn't a problem. I suppose, this could be an issue if it's just related to WM 6.5. My next option (my phone is not with me currently) is to remove the SD card and plug in the phone and see if the same thing happens. If it still occurs, I believe that would 100% rule out the SD card as the issue.

Well, I removed the SD card and when I plugged it into a computer it STILL acted weird. The symptoms seemed different though. First, I can't hit the start button. Well, I can physically touch it, but it does not respond at all. Nor does the start icon at the top take me to the start menu. Also, I tried to go into settings > Menu > All Settings to then turn off sense to see if that was the problem, and it won't even let me in to the 'all settings.'
I guess next step is to just do a hard reset in hopes that this fixes the problem, that or move to a custom rom. I just don't really want to do either because I have a lot of stuff I'd rather not tweak to get to where my phone is at again.
If anyone has any ideas, please help.
Thanks

Hey
Just turn the data sync options like fb and twitter to off. ANd you phone will be running in no time. JUST went to the same problem today and found turning data options off as the best solution.

Help! at the point of sending back!

Had my XDA Exec for a week now and its great until I try and do any thing computer related.....
only managed to get it to sync once and that was just luck, sometimes even when active sync says not connected I can still explore but wont sync but this happened only a couple of times?
the message says:
CRITICAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVIES HAVE FAIL TO START, TRY RESETTING THE MOBILE DEVICE, AND CONNET AGAIN.
which i have done loads of time including hard resets!
I had none of these troubles with my ipaq!
Tried:
uninstalling active sync (NOW 4.1)
turning off firewall
soft resets
hard resets
rom update (luckly done it the one time it did sync)
Calling O2 - dead loss tried to get me to call a premium rate number!!
Tried Microsoft’s sync 4 help page - this is when i got it to work the once, i opened properties in networks and checked and uncheck the box's and just seamed to come to life didn’t change any thing??
Tried it since and nothing happens?? Must have some thing to do with this but no luck so far..............
The second problem is TomTom 5 put on sd card put in xda and and it fires up for one second then nothing? Does the same when I open from PDA?
Ahhhhhhhh! its driving me crazy!!!!
sorry to go on but I desperately need help as don’t want to send it back?
Sorry also am I correct in saying you get a 2 week cooling of period with o2 so could send back with in this time and cancel contract?
@glen
did you try to install the latest 4.1 with the firewall switched-off?
What firewall s/w are you using?
(remember to uninstall all previous versions)
yes already had it running and used with ipaq 2210 and worked spot on!
and as mentioned fire wall is turned off
What firewall(s) are you running? I take it that when you say you switched your firewall off you also mean the WIndows firewall as well? What messages do you get when you plug it in? USB device not recognised or something, or does it not react at all?Have you tried trying to connect through Bluetooth, or by using a different USB port on your PC? If so and it still isn't working, there might be a fault in which case return it!
Fin
Also, sorry if its a silly question, but you have got at least Outlook 2002 on your PC?
pretty sure i have willcheck later? whys that?
It's just that if your device is connected (you can explore it etc) there doesn't appear to be a connection problem, the problem seems to be with synchronization, for which Outlook 2002 (or later) is needed. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, but I had a similar problem when i tried to sync my Exec to my laptop (which only runs Office 2K) I had to install 2K2 from the disc which came with the Exec and all was fine.
At work I get a similar problem.
When I sync with the PC I need to start outlook first before connecting via usb, or else it comes up with an error and only allows me to explore the device.
At home it seems to work ok.
For me at work I think its down to activesync trying to do its thing before outlook has properly loaded.
i dont think this is the problem as i sure i have the xp pro version but will check when i get home...
but saying that the exec connets fine at work?
but thats windows 2k
On mine here are my observations and what I did:
1) I deleted poutlook.ink from the start up folder. This seem to help and at the same time reduces any notification errors after a soft reset which I noticed occurs if I have either sadaemon.ink and poutlook.ink on the start up folder. As of now I only have handymenu.ink in there, a program that I use to launch some system applications.
2) I also noticed that for my computer to recognize my EXEC, I need to plug it in when it is OFF. If I plug it in when it is ON, I get the message device not recognize. If I forgot and plug my EXEC while it is ON, definitely, the message device not recognize appears, so I just disconnect my EXEC from the USB cable. Then turn my device OFF by pressing the power button and plug it back to the USB cable after 10 seconds.
3) Remember not to connect your EXEC immediately via USB cable if you just closed the screen and assume it is already OFF. You have to make sure your EXEC is OFF by turning it OFF using the power button or at least you have exceeded your set time for device activity while on battery power.
4) If however after all these precautions and I still get that message device not recognize, which I seem to experience 1 in 50 tries. I just disconnect my EXEC from the USB cable, make sure I turn it OFF using the power button and plug it back in.
5) I also ONLY experienced this problem to have occured after I upgraded my radio version to 1.06.00. BUT this is a small price to pay for the added benefit of that upgarde.
With these in mind, I always connect without any problems. The message device not connected, I only experience 1 in 50 tries, so I am happy with that.
checked outlook and i have 2002 sp3, going to try the over thing mentioned
tried all those tips and i still get the same message:
CRITICAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVIES HAVE FAIL TO START, TRY RESETTING THE MOBILE DEVICE, AND CONNET AGAIN.
which i have done loads of time including hard resets!
I had none of these troubles with my ipaq!
Is your USB cable plugged directly into your PC? I have had problems syncing before when my device was plugged in through my monitor instead of directly.
Thanks chaps i sorted it at last!!! only took 2 weeks!!!
it was the firewall after all just turning it of was not enough uninstalled it the got norton and set up prop as on microsoft web sight.
job done!
just got to sort tomtom prob now, but brought step by step instrucions of ebay for a fiver!!
looks like a rip of but had bits of the guy before so figures crossed!
if any good ill post up here........

Can't get 8525 to work under Vista (32 bit)

Hi all, I have a frustrating problem with my Cingular 8525. I just formatted the comp and installed Vista Ultimate on it fresh. I downloaded WMDC but I can't get it to recognize my phone for the life of me. It keeps saying "connecting" forever and never does. I have done all sorts of installs, re-installs, hard resets, but I can't get it to detect at all! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

first try to install the driver of your device.. go to device manager and look for unknown device at OTHERS..
good night and good luck
The driver is installed... it displays HTC USB Sync. I am getting frustrated . Stupid Vista.
USE the search function dude
Hermes vista config guide
Also make sure you dont have any firewalls active. I have had issues syncing my phone with my computer when using AVG's firewall. I simply disabled the firewall and it fixed my problems.

I already tried that guide... still not working. Ill try disabling the firewall
go to settings->connections->usb to pc and then check Enable Advanced network functionality.
If that doesn't work remove/uninstall htc sync device, unplug device and plug in device to reinstall the htc sync device after you have set the usb to pc connection settings.
Also try using a different USB cable and plugging it into a different port, you never know, it could just be something defective.
But I'm putting my money on the firewall
I had a problem connecting my 8525 to my Vista machine. It would say connecting but it would never finish 'connecting'. It took a while but finally I figured out what was causing it. It was the 'recording' .wav files in the notes directory that were causing the issue. If you have any .wav files in your notes directory I'd suggest moving them to say your SD card or deleting them. That fixed the 'connecting' problem for me and since I did that it's been syncronizing fine ever since.
I tried everything listed in here at once.... something worked I should have done each step by step to pinpoint what exactly... but its working now. Thanks everyone!

Same for me. I had a load of problems getting the Mobile Device Center working with my HTC TyTN. First I was unable to even install the driver when I first connected my device. The "add new hardware" wizard always tried to connect to Windows Update and install an updated driver which then failed. The solution was to let it fail and manually install an older driver from the list using the icon in Device Manager. After that I could start Windows Update and download the latest update.
Then I had the same problems as you describe. When I started WMDC it just hung while displaying "Connecting". Looking in the task manager I noticed that the wmdc.exe process was consuming more and more memory, up until something like 250 MB, after which WMDC just showed "Error". Finally I got it to work. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what I did to fix it. I know that the "advanced network features" under USB in connection settings on the TyTN need to be ticked and the device showing as a Windows Mobile Device instead of HTC USB Sync.
Initially I did a hard reset of the TyTN. Further, I manually unistalled and reinstalled the driver in Device Manager a couple of times. I tried to reboot both the computer and the TyTN several times. Also, I did restart the "Windows Mobile-based device connectivity" service after plugging in the cable. Finally it just recognized my device and I could setup the partnership. Now I can sync over bluetooth too and skip the cable.
HTC phone support was not very helpful with this problem. "We will call you back". Yeah right.
Mobile cofiguration:
Dopod 838 Pro
LVSW 4/17/07 WM6
Hard SPL
PC configuration:
Windows Vista Business Edition
I encountered the same problem. Currently able to sync back by hard resetting my device. The USB to PC connection on settings does not appear to affect the sync problem.
I suspect that the problem arise when I originally sync with an XP machine.
What worked for me was to enable the advanced usb setting on the phone as mentioned...then while the phone is still plugged in, I removed everything associated with the phone from device manager on the pc. Once that was done, I unplugged the cable, waited a few seconds, and plugged it back in (with the advanced usb settings still checked.) Worked like a charm with WMDC.
I had problems with all sorts of "connectivity" in Vista, including connecting up my Trinity, and setting up my xbox 360 as a media extender.
As soon as I uninstalled MS One Care it all started working.

At a loss with activesync

I'm at a complete loss with activesync. I've done everything I can think of and I can't get my computer to see my 8525. I've reinstalled activesync and hard resent my device. When i plug in it says
one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows did not recongnize it
usb root hub (2 ports)
- unknown device
- usb composite device
Am I missing some sort of driver somehow? I don't know what to do..please help.
Hey i had the same problem. Is this your first time installing/using activesync??
Well what I did was this:
-Install activesync 4.2 from the CD (CD that came included w/unit).
-Uninstall activesync 4.2 (don't delete any drivers installed by the CD)
-Install activesync 4.5 (download it from Microsoft Website)
-Plug in your 8525 to the PC via USB cable, and your PC should NOW recognize it.
This is what I did and it helped. There may be a better/alternate way in doing this, but I FINALLY got Activesync to work!
Oh and see if you can help me with the prob. that I'm having.

Ya I can't find the CD that came with my phone for the life of me.
ok found disc and tried that. Nothing. Could my phone be broken?
heres what I had to do to get AS working again.
Delete the current version of AS from your PC
Go into c:/wondows/program files and delete the AS folder (Windows may not let you delete some DLL's.
Go into the registry and delete any AS entries you can find, or do what I did and use Ccleaner registry clean up program (Google it, it's freeware)
Restart the PC
Install AS 4.2 from the AT&T/Cingular disk.
Install AS 4.5 from MS.
Hook up your 8525 and all should be well.
Tried that....didn't work.
Still hoping someone has some advice. I've tried two different usb cables and used different ports as well so it's not that.
quick update...
I searched through the forums and googled a few things and from what I can tell other people have had this problem and not found any solution. I am considering trying bluetooth but I don't have bluetooth for my PC...can i get some sort of adapter? Also...Is there a specific driver I can download for the HTC hermes that might fix this issue?
Yea your situation sounds like the one I used to have.
Do you have a firewall?? If so DISABLE it. I have COMODO and even though I would press "accept", the drivers wouldn't install completely.
This is what I did:
-Start your PC.
-Uninstall Activesync through the Add/Remove.
-Delete the Microsoft Activesync folder in the Programs folder.
-Restart your PC
-Wait till your firewall loads up. Disable it.
-Go through the procedures I mentioned in my 1st post.
Oh and make sure you have internet access. I'm not 100% sure if internet access helps, but it could help with the drivers.
Even though I just got my 8525, I don't mind helping someone
tried that. no go. I think i'm going to just have to get a new phone.
Did you try disabling the Advanced Network Functionality?
START -> SETTINGS -> CONNECTIONS -> USBtoPC
Yes. when I do that it makes windows see my device, but windows does not know what my device is. Thats why I think some sort of driver might be missing, but I don't know how to fix that.

So... with the RNDIS checkbox UNCHECKED and your FIREWALL OFF, you get the USB Device not recognized error? In that case, ENABLE it and look at these other settings:
1. In the PPC open ActiveSync, then select Connections... from the menu and make sure the Synchroinize ALL PC's using this connection: USB option is checked.
2. In Windows (XP) check your ActiveSync connection settings (see image).
3. Did you try the AS 4.5 Connection Trouble Shooter?
4. You should also try another computer, just to double-check.
There is no driver to make AS work, AFAIK. Question: What happens when the RNDIS checkbox is enabled? Does Windows report an error or simply doesn't connect?
Tried all of those things, still device not recognized. I do need to try another computer but unfortunatly do not have access to one.
When i click that RNDIS checkbox nothing of interest happens. If it's clicked on when i connect windows very briefly see's the device (although it's not recongized) and then the little symbol for unknown device on my taskbar dissapears. If I then click it off windows will again see the device and the little symbol on my taskbar reappears, but it still doesn't recongnize the device.
Wow. That's a strange problem you have there. At this point, it could be a hardware issue. You could try installing WM5Storage or CardExport just to check if the USB hardware is working (bad cable?). Also, try checking your PPC registry, specifically, HKLM\Drivers\Usb\FunctionDrivers. It should look similar to mine (see pictures attached). I believe these keys tell Windows what to do with the device when connected thru USB. Other than that, try a flashing a new ROM from the SD Card, something like VP3G's which is known to work correctly.
Branden,
I have this problem from time to time. My solution is as follows: make sure the usb cable is connected to both the phone and the computer, even though you are getting the unrecognised error message.
Reboot the phone (soft reset) while still attached to the usb cable. Do not rush anything. Input any unlock passwords when prompted by the system but be aware that booting up can be slow, so give it time.
Once the phone has booted up you should then see activesync kick in. You may have to try this several times before it works but it always works for me.
One thing I would advise is to disable/deinstall any auto locking software, eg S2U2. These tend to kick in on long synchronisations and throw the usb status out.
Hope this helps.

Same Problem
Just to let you know your not alone ...
I am having the Exact same problem at the moment .... fortunately i do have access to another PC ... My Laptop connects to it with no problems what so ever .... so it obviously is a PC issue and not a Phone issue
I too have tried all the currently posted attempts at a solution to fix it but so far nothing has worked ... i am beggining to think that i may have to do a fresh intall of XP and that would Phiss me off
So any further suggestions would be doubley appreciated
Tried everything mentioned since my last post and still nothing. Also I am now getting the white screen issue again (Which I fixed originally by buying another hermes that had a crushed usb port and swapping the screens out). I think I may be about ready to move on to another phone as this is now my third major problem with this model of phone (although one of the problems may be an issue with XP).
I had the same problem. I updated my WM5 to WM6....and it stoped syncing with my computer. Went back to exchange it. Later, I learned it wasn't the problem with the phone syncing.....here's how you can fix the problem.
Click on Start>Settings>Connection Tab>USB to PC
Uncheck "Enable advanced network functionality"
Click on "ok"
I just upgraded to wm6 again and followed these steps....now it syns fine.
It worked for me.....hopefully it will work for you.
Peace

TouchHD will not connect to Activesync under XP

Hi All,
failry new memeber when it comes to posting but have been using you guys as an essential source of bugfixing, problem solving and general HTC MDA advice since my TYTN.
I have spent sometime searching but not been able to find anyone with an issue similar to mine.
So heres the thing, recently exchanged my TYTN for a TouchHD and overall extremely impressed with both the handset and dev work done on here already.
I am running Dutty's 1.7 rom coupled with Radio ROM 1.09.25.35 all has been working and syncing wonderfully, however today when i try to sync up to my laptop to upgrade the radio to 1.10.25.25 i cannot get the darn thing to connect to activesync at all.
I am running XP SP3 and activesync 4.5 (again successfully until today)
I am using a non HTC USB lead which i know is generally a no no, however i sync'd up my kaiser with this lead for over a year and have been successfuly syncing my HD until today. I have tried an alterante USB lead just in case, again one with which i had no issue on the Kaiser.
I have tried to sync with the firewall on and off, also with my AntiVirus on and off
I have tried disabling Start_settings_USB-PC "enable faster data sync" to no avail.
I have tried the cusomary uninstall and reinstall of a fresh MS downloaded Activesync again no joy.
When I connect my HD to the pc and select connection type "Disk Drive" it recognises it instantly and allows me to browse the microSD card
When i connect with connection type "ActiveSync" it opens activesync, and displays connecting for smoe time and then decides it can't connect and offers me a diagnostic scan.
I have run the scan and saved the log file for information.
so basically the laptop can see my HD, activesync recognises a device has been connected via USB but refuses to finalise the connection. Oh obviously i have tried the "connect all using the connection" setting in activesyn on the HD as well. Figure the more i can tell you about what i have and havent done now the more time it saves you guys.
Its almost as if a process or service has been stopped or deleted on the device but i am buggered if i can figure if or what that maybe.
Any help appreciated guys. Obviosuly i will as a matter of course re-attempt all the above with the official HTC USB cable when i get home, but honestly dont see this being the issue considering the history of effectiveness of these cables.
I look forward to a flurry of interesting responses for me to try. Big thanks to all those who have made my WM PDA experience spot on to date.
Dboy
Update as promised.
Have got home and tried to connect using the HTC cable but still no joy.....
What could possible have gone wrong ?
No one any ideas ??
Hello,
I got a very similar issue, after some investigation I found out that it was my calendar causing this strange connection behavior.
Please do the following test,
1. delete your phone in active sync
2. reconnect your phone with the PC using the USB cable
3. When it asks for the synchronizing options (by default contacts, calendar,E-mail, favorites & M office one Note are ticked), REMOVE the tick of the calendar.
4. After finishing the setup wizard the synchronizing process will run as expected
So in my case I'm having trouble with the calendar, why ? I don't know but maybe someone else might have an explanation.
Good Luck
I encountered similar problems with ActiveSync previously but it was solved not via a soft/hard reset of my HD, but after I reboot my PC. Hope this can help you.
Note: I rarely shutdown or restart my laptop. I simply leave it to hibernate.
Reset HD Touch to get syn again.
One day could sync next day could not.
In the end did soft reset of phone all OK now.
Think the problem is I took a photo and it took ages to save it?
Thinking of put small hole in case so I can do a soft reset without the pain of unclipping cover. Any thoughts.

Tethering overrides flash memory?

I've never had the need to use WMWifiRouter as a 3G to USB connection, but my modem at home is dead and won't be replaced until Tuesday. 3 days is quite a ways to go without Internet! So, I used WMWifiRouter 1.51 to enable the 3G to USB connection for my desktop PC.
After I was done with the 'net, I turned off WMWifiRouter and unplugged my phone. I then realized I needed to upload a few things on my phone, so I plug it back in to use it as a storage device. Problem is, my computer immediately detects my phone as a tether rather than the storage device. I've enabled the option so my phone asks me what type of connection it wants to create, but my computer keeps forcing the tether instead.
I know it's the way my computer is seeing my Touch Pro 2, but I was hoping somebody else may have run into the same issue before and found a resolution.
Thanks in advance!
I just used WM last night as a test, and then finally sync'd up my outlook 2000 contacts and calendar today.
Are you absolutely sure that WM has stopped running? I know on my diamond, the task manager option would NOT show some running apps after it was running without a soft reboot for like 2 months.
I haven't tried a "storage connect" yet though, I don't think I've ever used that.
I am absolutely positive it has stopped running completely. I used the built-in task manager with SKTools to verify. Even after a soft reset on my phone, my computer still does it.
Like I said, I know it's just the way my computer is now detecting my phone, but I was hoping somebody here had the same problem in the past.
I find it a little funny... I used my phone as a temporary solution to not having internet at home and now it only leads to more problems
Try uninstalling the drivers that your computer installed for the TP2, it would be in the Control Panel->Device Manager . Honestly i have no clue which one they would be but by doing this your computer will have to reinstall the USB drivers for your phone and re-recognize your phone.
Tried it. My computer installed it as a modem, but uninstalling the drivers didn't help. My comptuer would still detect it every time and reinstall the modem drivers.
Hard resetting my phone fixed this. It's the worst solution, yes, but it still worked. Fortunately, it only takes about 20 minutes to get everything back in order once more.
Thanks for the help anyways.
UPDATE: Ran into the same problem again last night. Fortunately, I found a better solution.
I made the USB to PC connection automatically connect to ActiveSync and disabled "Enable faster data synchonization." Disconnected and reconnected my phone and I was able to use the Disk Drive option once more without having my PC automatically see it as a Windows Mobile Modem
