Help! at the point of sending back! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Had my XDA Exec for a week now and its great until I try and do any thing computer related.....
only managed to get it to sync once and that was just luck, sometimes even when active sync says not connected I can still explore but wont sync but this happened only a couple of times?
the message says:
CRITICAL COMMUNICATIONS SERVIES HAVE FAIL TO START, TRY RESETTING THE MOBILE DEVICE, AND CONNET AGAIN.
which i have done loads of time including hard resets!
I had none of these troubles with my ipaq!
Tried:
uninstalling active sync (NOW 4.1)
turning off firewall
soft resets
hard resets
rom update (luckly done it the one time it did sync)
Calling O2 - dead loss tried to get me to call a premium rate number!!
Tried Microsoft’s sync 4 help page - this is when i got it to work the once, i opened properties in networks and checked and uncheck the box's and just seamed to come to life didn’t change any thing??
Tried it since and nothing happens?? Must have some thing to do with this but no luck so far..............
The second problem is TomTom 5 put on sd card put in xda and and it fires up for one second then nothing? Does the same when I open from PDA?

Sorry also am I correct in saying you get a 2 week cooling of period with o2 so could send back with in this time and cancel contract?

did you try to install the latest 4.1 with the firewall switched-off?
What firewall s/w are you using?
(remember to uninstall all previous versions)

yes already had it running and used with ipaq 2210 and worked spot on!
and as mentioned fire wall is turned off

What firewall(s) are you running? I take it that when you say you switched your firewall off you also mean the WIndows firewall as well? What messages do you get when you plug it in? USB device not recognised or something, or does it not react at all?Have you tried trying to connect through Bluetooth, or by using a different USB port on your PC? If so and it still isn't working, there might be a fault in which case return it!

It's just that if your device is connected (you can explore it etc) there doesn't appear to be a connection problem, the problem seems to be with synchronization, for which Outlook 2002 (or later) is needed. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, but I had a similar problem when i tried to sync my Exec to my laptop (which only runs Office 2K) I had to install 2K2 from the disc which came with the Exec and all was fine.

At work I get a similar problem.
When I sync with the PC I need to start outlook first before connecting via usb, or else it comes up with an error and only allows me to explore the device.
At home it seems to work ok.
For me at work I think its down to activesync trying to do its thing before outlook has properly loaded.

i dont think this is the problem as i sure i have the xp pro version but will check when i get home...
but saying that the exec connets fine at work?

On mine here are my observations and what I did:
1) I deleted poutlook.ink from the start up folder. This seem to help and at the same time reduces any notification errors after a soft reset which I noticed occurs if I have either sadaemon.ink and poutlook.ink on the start up folder. As of now I only have handymenu.ink in there, a program that I use to launch some system applications.
2) I also noticed that for my computer to recognize my EXEC, I need to plug it in when it is OFF. If I plug it in when it is ON, I get the message device not recognize. If I forgot and plug my EXEC while it is ON, definitely, the message device not recognize appears, so I just disconnect my EXEC from the USB cable. Then turn my device OFF by pressing the power button and plug it back to the USB cable after 10 seconds.
3) Remember not to connect your EXEC immediately via USB cable if you just closed the screen and assume it is already OFF. You have to make sure your EXEC is OFF by turning it OFF using the power button or at least you have exceeded your set time for device activity while on battery power.
4) If however after all these precautions and I still get that message device not recognize, which I seem to experience 1 in 50 tries. I just disconnect my EXEC from the USB cable, make sure I turn it OFF using the power button and plug it back in.
5) I also ONLY experienced this problem to have occured after I upgraded my radio version to 1.06.00. BUT this is a small price to pay for the added benefit of that upgarde.
With these in mind, I always connect without any problems. The message device not connected, I only experience 1 in 50 tries, so I am happy with that.

checked outlook and i have 2002 sp3, going to try the over thing mentioned

Is your USB cable plugged directly into your PC? I have had problems syncing before when my device was plugged in through my monitor instead of directly.

it was the firewall after all just turning it of was not enough uninstalled it the got norton and set up prop as on microsoft web sight.
job done!
just got to sort tomtom prob now, but brought step by step instrucions of ebay for a fiver!!
looks like a rip of but had bits of the guy before so figures crossed!

Connecting, connecting, connecting.......

Activesync just keeps trying to connect and is never successful. I have re-installed Activesync on my pc but it didn't help. Also, my work pc doesn't connect either. Definately a problem with my 8125. All has been well for a couple months and I have added no new software before the problem started. This problem also happened about two weeks after I got the phone and the only resolution was a hard reset. What a pain reinstalling all the software and settings I have now, it's customized just the way I like it. Anyone know how to re-install Activesync on JUST the phone or have any other ideas?
Try the latest activesync 4.2 beta and disable any firewalls if possible on the pc. On the device start activesync application and go to menu\options - delete pc that you are syncing with and try again.
Deleted profiles on both pcs installed beta on one. Still no connecting. Tried clicking SYNC on phone, pauses for a second then nada. No connection.
Have you deleted profiles on the device? and disable firewalls, and if you have a network adapter enable it because latest activesync treats the connection with device as a network - there are many posts on this issue do a search and read through some - seem to be many different factors involved.

I removed the PC profiles from my 8125. Also reinstalled Activesync 4.2 on my work pc. Nothing. Although this time I got an error message- Cannot find the file "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=65257&clcid=0x409" (or one of its components) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all libraries are available". Like I would know what that means. Anyways, no firewall enabled. Besides, this should not be happening, all of a sudden, on 2 separate pcs. That kinda rules out a pc problem. It has to be in the phone. That, and the fact that a hard reset fixed it last time. I'm thinking something corrupted in Activesync on the phone???
And searching on this forum is useless. I type in "connecting Activesync" and every post with either word shows up. 614 in just Wizard forums alone. Is there a way to search so that ONLY posts with both words show up? That way I can modify my wording until I find something useful. Search for any terms or use query as entered is ticked. On other forums you can just use quotation marks but not this one. It makes searching very difficult. ROB
Oh, and yes my network adapters are still enabled as always.
Yes best to search with the word AND cuts out all the other stuff i.e. activesync AND connection would do it. Yep sounds like it may be the device.

Happy reading, the last post is about connecting activesync via bluetooth so maybe thats an option.
Thanks Mark. I think I may try the bluetooth connection when I get home tonight. Or I may just throw in the towel and do a hard reset. that worked last time. Plus, I can install the latest ROM upgrade. Shame theres no way to uninstall and reinstall Activesync on the phone. Seems that should do the trick (maybe). Just tried my friends 8125 on my work pc- syncs just fine. So much for all the pc fixes everyone seems to be trying.
I had the same problem with AS refusing to connect via usb or BT.
In the end i went & purchased (although the demo version would have done) Sprite backup. installed on the PC. Browsed to the install dir to find the cab file. copied to my wizard (wifi, or sd card reader etc).
Insatlled & backed up to SD card
Hard reset
restore
stop here if you're happy, if not
AS to sync calender & contacts to pc
hard reset
update ROM
AS contacts, cal, docs etc back to wizard
install SW & settings
BACKUP
Yep. Had to hard reset. All is working again. Crappy Activesync. What's up with this P.O.S. ? Trying to setup bluetooth now and the pc finds the phone but AS won't connect. The phone finds the pc (HomeCenter) but it shows no services available. I'm assuming that there should be some listed (maybe Activesync?) Guess I'll have to do some searching for bluetooth problems with AS now. Did I mention that AS is a P.O.S??? But you all knew that already. :lol:
Dont forget to open a port in you BT settings (on the pc) and tell AS (also on the pc) to accept connections on that port.
Then your wizard should be able to see the AS service on the pc (you initiate the sync from the phone, not the pc)
I have had this problem since day one, and continue to have it despite several (more than 15) hard resets, multiple ROMs, multiple pertnerships etc. I plug in my PPC USB, and it just says "connecting" forever. Every time, after plugging in my USB, I have to shut off my PPC, and turn it back on. Then my laptop finds and connects with my PPC, and syncs all my data like it should. If I do this more than 3 times, my laptop crashes and reboots. If anyone has figured out how to fix this, let me know.

Activesync 4.5 Problem: won't connect to my device anymore

so i thought i'd give vista's "windows mobile device center" a try on my vista laptop, and wasn't surprised to find that i couldn't get it to recognize my phone. i was surprised to find that the xp computer that i've been using with activesync for a long time suddenly stopped recognizing my phone as well.
up to now i've hard reset phone (dcd 3.04, 3.37 radio) and reinstalled activesync 4.5. no dice. please if anyone can help me troubleshoot this thing i'd be way grateful. why has my phone stopped communicating with my computers?
For WM 6 devices, on Vista you must upgrade to Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1.
i downloaded and used 6.1 on my vista machine, but it didn't work. any other ideas? i think there may be something that changed on the phone, because now, activesync won't work either...

Just for ****s and giggles, have you tried the following:
1. Using a different usb port
2. Blowing the dust out of the port on the phone
3. Using the Y adapter that came with the phone in between the sync cable and the phone
First, plug into the USB, wait for the Windows new device chime, see if anything occurs in the WM Activesync.. If no Activesync connection is made (after the 'connecting' has stopped) then unplug and plug in back in another USB port. Do that at least 4 times (cycling between ports...even the same may eventually work) to see if you have a success.
Restart your PC, Soft-rest your phone and try again.
If still nothing, then don't bother plugging your phone in and then Run As An Administrator the attached batch file and then under View 'Show Hidden Devices.' You'll now see all devices that have ever been installed and retained for your OS, with the faded devices as those not currently attached/active.
Rather than the batch file you can open up a Command Promp Window with Administrator access (Start\Programs\Accessories\Right Click on Command Prompt and Run As An Administrator)
(I usually keep that batch file accessible in the root of my OS partition, just to keep it easy to clean out legacy device drivers that can cause problems.[/i])
Enter:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Uninstall
Network adapters\Microsoft Windows Remote Adapter
Portable Devices\PocketPC
Then under Programs & Settings uninstall the Windows Mobile Device Center upgrade, and then reboot your PC. Reinstal that Device Center 6.1 update and then again connect your phone with the USB. (for the XP machine you can do all of the and unistall/reboot/reinstall the ActiveSync 4.5.
(note to self or another.....these steps to be added to the Wiki for ActiveSyn issues)
well, i'm thinking that the "****s and giggles" have it. i blew into the port, plugged her in, and it connected to my xp machine, just like days of old. after about 3 minutes though, the connection dropped, and i've not been able to get it going again since. i think this rules out any software/settings problem, and looks like it's a hardware issue. i'll try cleaning it one more time a little later, and if no go, i'll have to figure a way to re-flash the stock rom (i only have a 6gb card...) and send the beast back. thanx for the input, guys (specially keystone, dang man that was one badass post with some instructions that will help someone, i'm sure.)
Do you have the Y adapter that came with the phone? The one with the audio jack and the 5 pin mini usb on one end and the 11 pin mini usb on the other? The reason I ask is because for some reason HTC decided to put an 11 pin mini usb connector on our phones, yet supply us with a data cable that's standard 5 pin mini usb. If you have it, just humor me and try it and see if it keeps the connection.
Oh and P.S....the "****s and giggles" wasn't just a shot in the dark. I've solved many activesync problems for people before using all 3.
I actually hadn't used the cord without the Y-adapter untill today. both ways yeild the same result.
Another Activesync problem
I've been on vacation the last week and while away i had to do a clear storage..anyway, my phone was fine but when i connect thru activesync i get an error code : 85010014 and my contacts list doesnt get updated...:S can anyone out there give me some advice or do i hafto start from scratch?
Also is there a way to find my contacts on my comp?

Well the hoop jumping is fun and all but I think if you uncheck the "Enabe advanced network functionality" in Start > Settings > Connection > USB to PC it may help.
Damn! That was simple. I unchecked the "Enabe advanced network functionality" box and I'm up and running! I'll save the hoops for later. Thanks!

my mogul has been giving me crap with vista and xp for weeks. Nothing can solve it. I've re-flashed, downgraded, used different ports, different cables, modified the USB to PC settings.
Add this to the list of things that randomly seem to be a problem for this phone.
I had a similar situation, none of the software based suggestions fixed it. Wiggling the cord around would sometimes connect, but soon thereafter, my phone stopped charging. The USB port was the culprit, so be careful.
I'm sure everyone who was having troubles figured out solutions, just thought I'd add in my dealings with this.
I just had the phone activated today (yes I bought used) and brought it to work to sync with my work outlook, well the usb cord would charge the phone but give me nothing but errors in the way of actual data connection. I was a little bummed this afternoon thinking I bought a partially broken phone. But WHILE HAVING THE PHONE CONNECTED ( I bold because I had done this multiple times while not connected and had no results) I opened the Comm Manager and clicked on the sync button at the bottom, suddenly my computer could recognize my device and I was sync'ing like a mad man.
Very possibly a stupid thing I should have done from the start, but I don't know any better since I'm brand new to all of this. I only post in hopes of helping another bummed out soul as was myself
I an running a HTC TyTN-II 4550 phone (WinMo 6.1) on a desktop PC (WinXP).
I couldn't get Activesync 4.5 to work either, but there were obvious reasons--my version of Office 2000 isn't supported (2003 is the earliest, I think) and IE and Outlook are not set as my default mail clients (-and that's how I like it-).
I didn't really need Activesync but I did want to be able to get files on and off the phone from my desktop PC through the USB cable. When I'd connect the phone, Activesync would automatically start up and spin the little logo for a while and then say "connection couldn't be made" and then I couldn't do anything--even move files on and off the phone.
What I found works is this:
1) open the Task Manager, and kill the wcescomm.exe process.
2) navigate to the folder that Activesync is installed in, and run the file named WCESMgr.exe.
3) that will popup a window, asking if you want to sync, or cancel. Press [cancel]
4) the normal Activesync window will come up, and the choices for "Sync" and "Schedule" will be greyed out, but the "Explore" button should work.
Sometimes I can disconnect and reconnect the phone without going through steps #1-#4, but not always.
With the "Explore" window you can drag files on and off the device.
I tried dragging small Word and Excel docs on and off; both converted properly when dragged onto the phone, but only the Word file would convert again when dragged off.
The phone will access the internet through the USB when hooked up this way, also.

Connecting to Activesync but not able to Sync

I am having a problem syncing with activesync, and i must think the problem is due to a drop i had the other day. It made the miniUSB port...smaller seemingly, although the cable still fits in (be it very snugly now). i can still charge it in the wall, and it shows "connected" on activesync when plugged into the pc and the amber light comes on every time. However activesync quickly gives me a message that "synchronization cannot be completed successfully, please remove device and try again or open the troubleshooter"
I'm not sure if i should just start to look for a different way to back up files via PIM or others and move on without activesync ...flash using microSD from now on? consider replacing the port (not even sure how much effort that is, or if it's possible yet)
Or is there anything simple i can try that i haven't done yet? TIA
EDIT: I Have tried unistalling and reinstalling Activesync and even dl'd latest version of AS again
How about deleting the sync partnership with ActiveSync, reestablishing the partnership and then seeing if you are able to sync?
have you tried syncing via bluetooth, then at least you would know its the usb port that is the problem, you say the connection is tight when you insert the cable, are you sure that nothing else is lodged in there when you dropped it?
well, it doesn't look like there's anything in there from what i can tell...the metal actually looks bent or mangled just a bit. Unfortunately my lappy does not have BT, so i can't try that. good thought though
Well if i was you i would invest in a bluetooth dongle for your laptop ,that way you should still be able to sync, and flash via sd card. That way you will have the problem sorted to a degree. Have you tried flashing another rom via cable btw. You say it connects via active sync. I would do a backup using spb backup or something similar and reflash the device and see if that fixes the sync issue. Try a cooked rom first, if that doesnt work try an original rom.
The only reason i mention the cooked rom to flash first is that it is quicker
I've had the same problem where active sync wasn't recognizing my phone.....that is until I soft reset'd my phone while still connected to pc...usually works for me.
another solution..on phone goto:
Settings->Connections->USB-to-PC->Advanced Network Functionality
on... I turned it off. I haven't had a random disconnect, nor PC crash.
A soft reset did the trick for me.

If you have a card reader, copy this - http://toril.ru/pda/akrndisadd.exe - onto the phone and run it there. It works every time my phone decides to stop talking to the PC.

I am having Syncing issues, last night, has been fine until now.
Did all the deleting partnerships etc but to no avail.
The phone sync's fine with my Work PC(XP) but at home(Vista) its not,

I am having a strange problem with Active Sync.
When I plug in my mobile with USB and use active sync. it does not synchornise.
I have tried all the options liek chaning schedule, changing the settings and diabling advanced network functionality still I am not able to make the diamond synchronise.
Finally, I download the active sync. 4.5 even then my problem remains the same.
It always shows the message "connected" and fails to synchronise.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services]
"WCESMGR Windowplacement"="0,1,-1,-1,-1,-1,0,0,0,0"
in windows xp registry.
Error is no longer appeared when I connect t32 (WM6) with my pc.
Doing both things in post #6 worked for my TyTN. This trouble started only after I plugged my phone into a Vista laptop to use it as a modem. Gotta love Vista.... (smile)

I have Vista Home Premium....
try pluggin your mobile directly into a usb port on the back of your pc and not through a hub
mine did this now it works 100% of the time

TouchHD will not connect to Activesync under XP

Hi All,
failry new memeber when it comes to posting but have been using you guys as an essential source of bugfixing, problem solving and general HTC MDA advice since my TYTN.
I have spent sometime searching but not been able to find anyone with an issue similar to mine.
So heres the thing, recently exchanged my TYTN for a TouchHD and overall extremely impressed with both the handset and dev work done on here already.
I am running Dutty's 1.7 rom coupled with Radio ROM 1.09.25.35 all has been working and syncing wonderfully, however today when i try to sync up to my laptop to upgrade the radio to 1.10.25.25 i cannot get the darn thing to connect to activesync at all.
I am running XP SP3 and activesync 4.5 (again successfully until today)
I am using a non HTC USB lead which i know is generally a no no, however i sync'd up my kaiser with this lead for over a year and have been successfuly syncing my HD until today. I have tried an alterante USB lead just in case, again one with which i had no issue on the Kaiser.
I have tried to sync with the firewall on and off, also with my AntiVirus on and off
I have tried disabling Start_settings_USB-PC "enable faster data sync" to no avail.
I have tried the cusomary uninstall and reinstall of a fresh MS downloaded Activesync again no joy.
When I connect my HD to the pc and select connection type "Disk Drive" it recognises it instantly and allows me to browse the microSD card
When i connect with connection type "ActiveSync" it opens activesync, and displays connecting for smoe time and then decides it can't connect and offers me a diagnostic scan.
I have run the scan and saved the log file for information.
so basically the laptop can see my HD, activesync recognises a device has been connected via USB but refuses to finalise the connection. Oh obviously i have tried the "connect all using the connection" setting in activesyn on the HD as well. Figure the more i can tell you about what i have and havent done now the more time it saves you guys.
Its almost as if a process or service has been stopped or deleted on the device but i am buggered if i can figure if or what that maybe.
Any help appreciated guys. Obviosuly i will as a matter of course re-attempt all the above with the official HTC USB cable when i get home, but honestly dont see this being the issue considering the history of effectiveness of these cables.
I look forward to a flurry of interesting responses for me to try. Big thanks to all those who have made my WM PDA experience spot on to date.

I got a very similar issue, after some investigation I found out that it was my calendar causing this strange connection behavior.
Please do the following test,
1. delete your phone in active sync
2. reconnect your phone with the PC using the USB cable
3. When it asks for the synchronizing options (by default contacts, calendar,E-mail, favorites & M office one Note are ticked), REMOVE the tick of the calendar.
4. After finishing the setup wizard the synchronizing process will run as expected
So in my case I'm having trouble with the calendar, why ? I don't know but maybe someone else might have an explanation.

I encountered similar problems with ActiveSync previously but it was solved not via a soft/hard reset of my HD, but after I reboot my PC. Hope this can help you.
Note: I rarely shutdown or restart my laptop. I simply leave it to hibernate.
Reset HD Touch to get syn again.
One day could sync next day could not.
In the end did soft reset of phone all OK now.
Think the problem is I took a photo and it took ages to save it?
Thinking of put small hole in case so I can do a soft reset without the pain of unclipping cover. Any thoughts.

ActiveSync not working (all of a sudden)

Hi All
I searched the Forum but couldn't find a solution to this problem.
1. Came back form holiday yesterday - synced up my HD" with Outlook no problem
2. Tried to do it this morning. By the normal 'connect PC' option didn't come up and activsync icon didn'tr light up on PC
3. Rebooted HD2 and PC..no change
4. Tried to repair/reinstall activ sync, but towards the end of the repair it says 'there was a network error reading from file 'setup/msi'. Guessing that the file may be corrupt, I downloaded it again..same problem..so I can't repair or reinstall
5. There is definitely a connection of some sort as the HD2 begins to charge when connected
Bottom line is that the HD2 is not syncing - and I can't figure out why not.
Any advice appreciated...

Do you have a Norton (Symantec) firewall installed? I’ve found that the Norton product can interfere with ActiveSync.

Good point..but no. I have AVG installed (and everything was working OK yesterday)
Spooky thing is, I have managed to uninstal, reinstal and reboot..and it still won't show that it's connected with AS even though there is a connection of some kind, cos the device is charging.

ActiveSync is just a bit crap. It'll do this occassionaly, so if you use it a lot then get used to it.
A restart of the phone, whilst the USB cable is not plugged in, usually does the trick. Only plug it in again when it's fully started.
Also, try setting the AS connection to not allow USB connections, unplugging and plugging back in, and then setting it to once again allow USB connections.
Just messing with it like that usually works for me. Like I said, it's just a bit crap.

Yeah, I seem to recall I had this problem a while back - I'll faff around with the settings and see if it makes a difference

Well if johncmolyneux's suggestions don't work then try disconnecting your phone from the PC, restarting both, disconnecting the PC from the network, disabling the firewall element of AVG (if it has one) and then connecting the phone to the PC again.
If that doesn't work I can only suggest removing ActiveSync, totally shutting down your PC, starting up, then re-installing ActiveSync.
I had a similar problem but I was able to narrow it down to Norton in the end but it's a real pain when you don't know why it won't work.

I also occasionally was not able to connect with Active Sync, but rebooting the HD2 always fixes that issue. You said that this did not helped you, so try messing with the settings on Active Sync, like johncmolyneux said, also try when plug the usb cable into the device by default it asks you what kind of connection you're establishing (Active sync, data transfer and internet sharing) - try using data transfer, if it connects, unplug and connect it again, this time use active sync.

That'll teach me to not check the obvious! - It turned out that the cable had developed a fault. I changed the cable and it's now OK.
Case closed.
