left my phone in my car last night and came out to it this morning and the screen is cracked in multiple places. im wondering how to get this replaced. i'd have to call google warrenty company... any thoughts or questions please ask.... i need to have this phone replaced, only had it for 3 weeks now.
How cold did it get last night where you live? I wonder if that caused the screen to crack.
im in virginia beach, and it snowed here last night. first time in like 6 years... its 26 right now, so probably lower 20's last night
screen prob got too cold and cracked? o_0
The quality of the glass used on this phone is about the lowest of the low. It probably got too cold. 20's is a bit rediculous though for a screen to just crack and shatter.
If the screen really can crack from temps in the 20s, we will problably see many more cases. I guess I shouldnt take mine skiing.

I doubt that was the case... my N1 got delivered on a day when it was a high of 6 degrees where I live, was very cold, and the screen was not cracked. As well, being that it is cold where I live I am sure my screen has gotten below 20 degrees a time or two since, so say the least... I don't leave it in my car, let alone over night, but it has been exposed to -10 degree weather, with blowing wind, and time in a car waiting to warm up at those temps where the phone is cold to the touch for sometime after going inside.
very interesting. Keep us updated if you find out what the cause of this was
Wow very interesting and mysterious.. I wonder what could've caused it to break. Are you telling us all of the story? And if it did actually break with cold, then I must say shame upon HTC.. I hear the screen cracks from simple drops also? I mean, I've never had a phone that screen's broke simply because a fall of the concrete..

I could probably take all phones with glass screens with a certain size and just by dropping them on concrete from a couple of the feet they would all break. I could understand people complaining if it broke by hitting your carpet, but come on... Stop dropping your $500 phones on concrete. I've had several 3"+ screen phones and _never_ had a cracked screen in all those years.
edit:
And who leaves their phone in their car? I can think of numerous places where I wouldn't even leave the car stereo attached.
Bummer...let us know if it was indeed the cold

I find it odd this doesn't apply to the G1.. I've dropped my G1 a few times, and nothing has cracked.
Everyone drops their phone once in a while, but I've never heard of any phone cracking before. Is it simply because of the size of the screen? Or are there other factors that contribute to this? Sorry for the questions, but when I get my Nexus One.. I know one day, it is going to fall, and I don't exactly understand why it must crack also.
I don't want to be afraid to use my own phone outside because its going to break if I drop it, mistakenly.
If you're all thumbs when handling your phones I would suggest getting a case and screen protector for it.
i was buzzed and cold, thought i lost the phone. didnt bother looking in the car as it was snowing and i was freezing. i live in virginia beach and it hasnt snowed here in 6 years... so sat morning i went to warm up the car to go to work and my phone was sittin on the passenger side floor board.
i doubt it was from the cold as well, but never know... right now im using my g1 until i hear back from htc and find out where and who to send this to.
i've only dropped it once from about 2 feet up in the air. it was on the charger here at work and i went to answer my work phone. i attempted to set the phone down on a cubby/shelf thing and i didnt make it, so it took a lil spill to the floor. but that was like the 2nd day that i had the phone.
so far all i've done is sent htc an email, as their gonna be the ones covering it, not google... if anyone has any ideas, or tips plz let me know.
its been about 3 hours since the email was sent and still no answer.
EDIT: trying to upload pictures of it... but im at work and all the pic uploading sites are blocked so im trying to do it from my g1... anyone know of a site that i can upload pics and post em here, from my g1?
here are some pics... hard to see the cracks from a straight down view so here are 2 shots

It's glass. All it takes is an impact in the right spot and the glass will crack. I've accidentally dropped my iphone a couple times and it came out ok. But a friend of mine dropped hers and it landed flat on its face; needless to say, the screen was toast.

I agree with you, it is glass and they will break if you impact them in the right spot will crack them.
well, just got off the phone with htc and they said it most likely wont be covered under warranty... and i'd have to pay $30 just to get it to them, then $250 in repairs, if it wasnt covered under warranty... i just peeled the void sticker off the back screw cause i can replace the screen myself (have replaced multiple iphone screens)
so now im off to look for parts... anyone know of a place to buy parts online? im googleing right now and so far, no luck

Some possibilities:
1) it flew from the seat, hit the inside of the car and fell to the floor during a turn/braking.
2) a passenger stepped on it.

Is Sprint still doing that $35 repair deal if you don't have insurance?

EDIT: ...And I just barely touched it and the whole screen shattered. Definitely not gorilla glass.
Cell phone glass is so temperamental. i've dropped mine from 5 ft onto rugged asphalt while running and it left a scratch on the edge but nothing to the glass. Doesn't really make sense.
It was a weak spot in the glass, it can happen to any type of glass. This just kind of proves that the durability of each panel isn't tested a whole lot...

ive dropped my phone so many times its not enen funny and my screen is still flawless
So is Sprint still offering that $35 repair, or did that actually get canned like 3 months after they started it? Would like to sell this evo for what the EVO 3D or iPhone costs after my $150 upgrade discount.

Probably could have searched myself for that, but thanks!
I'll try this out on Wednesday.
The Evo DOES NOT have Gorilla Glass..I hate when people say it does, because it does not.
Although it isn't super weak, I dropped mine out of a mid size truck (about 2.5 feet) on concrete from my lap and it didn't break and I've dropped in it my bathroom (brushing teeth and listening to music lol) face down and not one crack.
As much as I hate to compare the two , but my Blackberry Storm vs the Evo . Performance wise the Evo slaughters that poor thing into the ground and back . But the blackberry storm doesnt have one scratch , not even a nick in the touch screen . That thing went through hell and back and the screen still looks like the day I bought it and never had a screen protector on it . I love my Evo but I miss the scratch resistance of the Storm

I droped my phone on concrete maybe 7 times in various senerios and nothing happened. I drop it in my bathroom 1 time and the screen shatters. I have insurane and took it to a repair center and they made me go through insurance where i had to pay the $100 deductable. The only good thing is that when you send the phone back they only want the phone. I got to keep the battery, charger and 8 gb micro sd.
SeNt FrOm YoUr MoThErS VaGiNa!!!
It's sad to see so many people going the insurance route when many times only the digitizer, a $20+ dollar part readily available online/ebay is what has shattered. Chances are, if you're technically inclined enough to be hanging out at XDA, you can handle repairing your Evo.
If the evo really had gorilla glass it would be posted on sprint and also on the box. Plus HTC would have said it on there site.
That site is mis informed . Those of you claiming it has it cause you dropped it just got lucky it didn't break or scratch . Also 2 inch fall is nothing lol.
Well my local store won't do anything. Insurance. Insurance. Insurance is all I heard.
Guy tried to tell me that the $35 repair was only for a month or two over a year ago, yet its still on their website.
He also said that it is gorilla glass for sure. If it is, its the cheapest piece or it HTC could possible buy.
The more I deal with sprint, the more I hate them. Still getting 100k 3g at my house and its been that was for 7 months.

Damn dude! Friggin sucks... Yea each cell phone screen is tempered differently. I abuse my Evo just to show off sometimes. It's totaaallly fine with it. I remember when I got my TouchPro2 on release date... I broke it in 2 days. There was an HTC recall though that if your phone fell from within ear range (~5ft average) and cracked, they would replace. I still have that replacement, and lemme tell you, it's a beast. The screen on that phone can get scratched though, so I put and invisishield on it. The designers know that we aren't perfect, and that **** happens... They build the phones to ensure endurance from normal impacts.
and yea... 3g is worse than dial up for me... and im in Miami... >.> 4G i dont have, dead RSA, too lazy to get phone swapped. I trust Sprint though, they'll bounce back, and hard. Unfortunately, I'm speaking about the corporation... Not the employees. You'll usually only find ****-heads in stores. No offense Sprint employees, I said usually, I know theres some kind folks out there. Call the corporate customer service, and complain, like hardcore. Driving back and forth to stores for a screen fix is insane. They are wasting your time, time is money. And they are depreciating you as a paying customer with legal and principle rights!
That why I use a case..

Do you have a "legal liability insurance"?
This insurance pays (for example), if you causes an accident, when you cross the street. I don't know if you have that in your country, but in Germany, everyone gotta have this insurance.
If a friend of you has this insurance, you can simply say, that he "threw" the dumb bell on your "bag" and the phone was inside of it.
Normally, they can't proof that you did it yourself.
BUT, you need someone, who has this insurance!

That's not standard to have in the uk, and insurance fraud isn't to be recommended.
Having contacts in insurance, this isn't the time to make false claims, as they are being ultra vigilant, especially on high value electronics, particularly expensive smartphones...
They became aware too many people were having unfortunate accidents with them, and often investigate those claims.
depends on the company obviously, but beware they can take legal action if you lie in a claim declaration.

Yes of course, that's true. Probably you shouldn't say that, when i advised you here @xda to do that. But, if you don't behave stupidly it would work though.
But pulser_g2 is right, when he says, that it's an insurance fraud. Probably they will do legal actions.
Send it to Samsung or so and ask, what it costs to repair it... might be the cheapest way.

Doesn't look as bad as I thought, how many kg did you throw on the phone? Is your phone still running? If yes, a replacement of the glas would fix your problem... saving $$$
But now we know, that gorilla glas ain't resistant against bumb bells :-S

I've broke mine to. I was just walking along the street and it slipped out of my hand when I got it out of my pocket and fell to the floor.
It fell flat and the samsung case popped off. When I picked it up there are two cracks on the screen and no response. It turns on etc, just blank screen though.

You can replace it yourself but you will need the correct tools. And iPhone4 repair tool kit will work. I have replaced the digitiser and LCD on a Samsung android phone before and it is not for the faint hearted. Once you get through all the clips and delicate flexible data cables, you will then have to go up against the dreaded double sided tape which holds the glass to the phone. Do it wrong and you snap the plastic frame!

If it still works, he should consider himself lucky. Things like is always makes me glad, I'm safe than sorry. I'm going to have to consider SquareTrade after I get my screen protector & case.
So we can assume now that the material used by Samsung is not the same in terms of strength and durability as Gorilla Glass.

Either way I have dropped alot of phones and the semi hard case seems to take the shock
Bummer man, probably 145usd for a screen assembly.........
Note hasn't even been out for that long so even if you don't have insure to cover it I'm pretty sure your still applicable to apply.
A device that big and heavy would really break easier than the smaller ones I guess.

It works perfect no body damage just the screen
Its not gorilla glass its just a thin piece of common glass. I am pretty sure it broke because it landed flat on the screen.
The problem with any glass screen isn't that they are "shatter" proof, but they are scratch resistant. Just about any piece of glass tinsel strength will resist a scratch (except for a diamond), but a sudden impact, especially on an edge will pretty much shatter it. The gorilla glass can flex, if you've seen the video, but I bet they never show anyone striking it on the edge. Even though in your event, it fell on the face, from the look of the photo, it landed on the edge first, even if just by a small amount.
I have a Dell Streak and the first thing I do before exiting my vehicle, is to make sure it is in the pouch before I get out of the car. My previous phones (HTC's) got dropped several times getting into/out of my car. I use to keep an otter box case on it, but they are so bulky, not many cases around for belt use.
I feel for you, but, I bet just about any large surface area piece of glass would do the same thing. Head over to the Dell Streak forum and you'll see a few broken glass streaks.
Hey everyone,
I was recently walking outside in the pouring rain with my OnePlus One. The crazy thing was that it was still functioning fine despite being practically hailed on. So I pulled out my M8 and decided to start recording. In this test I put the OnePlus One underwater multiple times and it came out fine each attempt. I didn't have any issues with the touch sensitivity, headphone jack, or even charging. It's pretty crazy quite honestly.
Thanks for providing this. I think you're a bit crazy considering people would kill for this phone, but it looks like it might have a nano coating like the moto G
Thanks for risking it.
Beyond that - how did you find the screen in the outdoors? Just respond instinctively (e.g. "rainbows directly into my eyes", "it was OK", "use only in caves - dark ones even for them")
a lot of modern phones can do this. the way they are built with low tolerances gives them some water resistance. but the oneplus is not waterproof, and it has no water resistance certification. so dont try this at home with your phone. you will probably mess something up and the phone can start to act weird days later. it is a testament to the build quality though.
@Nxxx,
getting interested about Speaker, is it working after such shower.?
what about earpiece.? OnePlus One detects earphones after this.?
etc. with such thing that are not visible at first glance or through video...(is it fully functional.? microphone.?)
i just wanted to add here. i got caught in a really bad thunderstorm last night while on my motorcycle with my opo in my jeans pocket. i rode for about 5 minutes in the worst thunderstorm i've ever ridden in, i was completely soaked and the opo got it as well. it was stil on and acting fine so i threw it under the seat and continued home and haven't shut the phone off yet and it's still fine.
i'd say the phone at least has a nano coating. i always worried about my nexus 5 because i knew this day would come at some point where i'd get stuck in a storm with my phone in my pocket and not be able to pull over. look slike the opo will do just fine.

i just wanted to add here. i got caught in a really bad thunderstorm last night while on my motorcycle with my opo in my jeans pocket. i rode for about 5 minutes in the worst thunderstorm i've ever ridden in, i was completely soaked and the opo got it as well. it was stil on and acting fine so i threw it under the seat and continued home and haven't shut the phone off yet and it's still fine.

I once used my Nexus5 for almost an hour in pure rain. It got so extremely wet, you can't imagine. I already thought I'd had to buy a new one. Nope. It's still working.
(Yes I had to stay in the rain. I was at the army there.)
I was taking a shot REALLY next to the water when a wave hit a half of my phone and it was underwater (but still in my hands) for less than a second. Nothing happened. I don't think it's waterproof, but somehow it resist

do you think it is possible for someone to check for IP for a specific device (like me to check my phone for IP##).?
maybe someone would like to push his device for testing
Don't get your hopes up too high people,
Friend of mine actually broke his OPO this way after 2 days (biking in a heavy rain storm).
The speakers were completely soaked and couldn't play anything till they dried. Everything seemed fine after the phone dried but it couldn't charge any more thus rendering the phone useless.
So anyway be careful out there! You never know if your device is just as water resistant as in this video, my friend already had bad luck so don't jinx it haha.

In my opinion you are only fortune, try a second time you will see that the OPO will die.
but do you usually walk on the streets without the shoes?? where do you live??
Consider this: you can have unprotected sex with someone who has herpes and not get it, but would you chance it? Didn't think so. It's not waterproof because it's not waterproof, you just got lucky.

can't be, all waterproof devices has rubber plugs on ports: audio, microusb, this doesn't.
here is a teardown for the OnePlus, doesn't seem to have rubber and protections against water in any part:
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/OnePlus+One+Teardown/26484
notice that the microusb port give complete access to water to electronics inside, it is either luck for sometime (what happened an hour later? is the OPO still working?) or it was treated with waterproof material.
then compare it with the Galaxy S5, where you can easily see rubber protections around parts that reach to the outside, camera, back, etc:
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+S5+Teardown/24016
The correct term is water resistant, not proof. And I don't even believe it have water resistant nano coating until officially confirmed by OPO. And they would not neglect to advertise that feature if they spent money on it.
NO! this phone has no seals in it at all! you will kill your phone sooner or later. hell i had a s5 and still didnt put it under water. dont do it ppppppl
Hope your charging port doesn't corrode, especially since the opo doesn't have wireless charging... cool video though. Makes me feel like i dont have to baby my baby as much as i do!
I feel like the headline of this should be changed so that people who are just skimming the headlines won't get the wrong idea and drown their phones :/

I agree the title is misleading. The phone is not water proof, there's no gasket on the back cover, no nano coating, and no port covers. It's just glass fused to the midframe with a tightly fit back which makes somewhat resistant to water, but there's no ingress protection so no dunking your phone.
Please don't take the mick I'm absolutely fuming, dropped my phone this morning and part of the screen has shattered. Now it's completely black and nothing I can do to make it work, the phone is on because it's still receiving messages. How screwed am I? I'm going abroad tonight and I desperately need some sort of phone I don't even care about the screen being cracked. I don't have Nexus Protect either. Thanks in advance
damn, where'd it hit?
aside from getting the screen repaired, no clue what to suggest. mustve dislodged something causing the entire screen to go black
Just over the bottom speaker. This is awful the crack isn't even that big, less than a quarter of the screen! I'm close to the edge right now I can't believe a phone I've had for just over a month does this the first time I drop it. WHY TODAY FFS
At this point you probably have to send it in for repairs. You want someone here to tell you something that doesn't exist.

I can't post links yet so I can't post a photo, but for a phone to be a paperweight after a fall and crack this small is frankly ridiculous, an iPhone will still work flawlessly even if the screen is utterly destroyed. And without Nexus Protect I'm now placed in a position where I can't even get it fixed, even for money? You can't even get Nexus Protect in the UK, does this mean that any UK Nexus user should just throw away their phone when it breaks?
I love this phone to bits but build quality like this is appalling
Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but you are looking to blame everything except the one place it lives, yourself, you dropped it (not deliberately), you have no insurance etc.
There is as much chance of an iPhone having an inoperable screen after being dropped as any other. Seen plenty of iPhones that work but nothing on the screen over the years, same as with other phones, so this is not unique to the 6P at all. As for Nexus protect, no it isn't available in the UK, but there are lots of alternatives, Bank's often provide cover for a fee, you can extend your house insurance to cover it, there are also 3rd party polices specifically for phones like Protect your Bubble.
I know you are emotional at the moment, but the phone isn't to blame for you not being properly covered if you should have been. Some consciously decide to take the risk, others get themselves covered. Some unfortunately choose to not make a decision, they can't blame others for that. Even having cover would not solve the problem of having it repaired in no time before you go away. If you need data off of it, have you rooted and installed TWRP?
Do you not have the old phone the Nexus replaced?
I know two people whose iPhone 5s and 6 suffered a 4 and 6(maybe) foot fall and it's display behaved the same way as it's doing on your 6P.
Yes it's my fault and yes I'm an idiot. This is my 10th post so I can actually show you the extent of the damage. I've never seen any other phone rendered useless from something as small as this

In all fairness I would expect any phone to crack the way I dropped it. It was only from around 2.5 feet and bounced off the carpet but hit the edge of a tile face-first. However I would also expect the phone to still work as it wasn't a huge impact. If every phone ceased to work entirely after the first drop people wouldn't pay £500 for it

Yeah, I have backups on the phone but I can't get my laptop to connect to the Nexus as I can't put my passcode in. And I sold my OPO as soon as the 6P arrived. Sod's law

Instead of trying to disparage the phone, deal with your problem at hand. Send it in for repair. That's your solution.
Furthering the point. Does anybody know of any decent UK-based repair centres that deal with the 6P?

Doesn't help you now bit once you have it repaired you could insure it for £7 pm, well worth it in my opinion.
Not aware of any repair stores that deal with the Nexus, apparently it's a hard phone to repair also so don't think it will be cheap [emoji19] [emoji19]

It is what it is. Your statements lead me to believe that you are very immature and demanding. You dropped your phone, you chose not to insure it and now you are upset about it when in fact you botched by breaking it and not having insurance. Hopefully it's a lesson learned but after reading your posts I doubt it.

Also depends what damage has been done in the inside too pal, I'll be honest I've dropped mine a couple of times and taken chunks out of the bezel I was really lucky not too smash the screen... Just luck of the draw I suppose

You made your decision already. Get an iphone next time since it is impervious to destruction.
I may be wrong, but that photo you posted looks like the screen got smashed by something blunt dead center with quite a bit of force. not the froce of a 2.5ft fall on carpet, then to a hard object.
You have no reason to lie, it's an anonymous forum, but the photo doesnt look to me to match the story. Ive seen multiple drop tests from 6+ feet and not much more than some cracking. That looks like a thin hammer was taken to it.
Really sucks, and repairs don't look as easy as other devices... Good luck, and whatever you end up doing, report back so others know where to go if in the same boat
That was my thought. That is quite a forceful blow shatter pattern. Not hugely surprising it has affected some of the electronics like the digitiser.
Hopefully the damage is limited to the replacement screen part.
I just saw the photo also. you can see the center of the blunt force that hit the screen and it circles outward. That wasn't a fall to the ground and a spiderwebbed screen.
