My Nexus one - Dead on arrival - Nexus One General

Just received it and only displays crap when I turn it on - see the attached. Not something I'd expect from a premium device like this. Hope they can replace it quickly.

looks like a dislodged/damaged connector cable.

ya sorry to hear that. it has nothing to do with how "premium" a device is though. Its electronics, thats what happens.

Well I hope so - it's made me question how well made this phone is and whether I actually want a replacement.

Yeah, because 1 failure like this out of the (fuzzy) estimate of 20,000 means it's a shoddily made device.
SC

If you've been reading here and the Nexus One support forums, you're going to hear about a lot of the problems with the phone. This is going to be highlighted since people don't generally make posts like "I just got my Nexus One and it has no problems. Have a nice day!"
I'd like to make it clear that I have a Nexus One with zero problems whatsoever. This particular screen issue seems to be rare, as I've never seen it before.

How much light leak is unacceptable?

I got a bit. Would be happier, obviously, if there weren't any. How much light leakage would you say warrants a return?
make sure the lights are on and give it to someone and if they don't point it out, then it is ok.
Omg, dont do it. Is it killing your experience with the phone? Are you getting payed to discredit this phone? Come with something better to complain about. This is something I'll think some lil girl will worry about. Some s hit you barely even notice unless you look for it. D amn. I had to try to look for a leak to see it. F uckin sad. I went through the same line of thoughts. But alas, we paid handsomely for this device and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect they be free of manufacturing defects. Yet, I understand that some may be unavoidable. Ergo my question: how much light leak is too much?

you handled his tone with aplomb, i must admit
i remember when i got my nexus, people went crazy about this that and the other.
no device is going to be perfect. ever. and, wait until 2 months from now when another phone comes out, and see how many threads get posted up about how people are whizzed that their phone is already "out of date", even though it isn't
it just happens with technophiles.
if you see another phone like yours (and you probably will sometime), just do a comparison. or, go down to the store, and do a comparison. if yours is substantially worse, then you deserve a replacement. if its the same, or not as bad, then either deal with it, or get a different model of phone

Thank you for your thoughtful response. This guidance is reasonable and I will it. BTW, how do you like your Evo over the Nexus? I was still teetering as of yesterday.
I have my EVO. What leaked light are you talkin' about, Willis?
You can hardly even see it in the night. you would have to look for it. if no one never mention this none of us would probly even know. thats how lil it is.
But as the other user say "No phone is perfect"
I will bet you anything. you can be rich as hell and buy a million doller phone. you will always see a post saying "OMG my phone dpad get stuck, is this phone going to ship with a major defect?"
But i think it sometimes get annoying. and carry to far out when people start crying about lil things as in "OMG Its dust under my screen how can i get it out!" or "MY PHONE JUST REBOOTED! BY ITS SELF! WHY!!"
People never do the basic stuff to fix a problem. like maybe try a reboot, or take out the battery, or wipe your phone clean. You people just come to forums looking for answers that you can solved on your own
I got lucky then. Can't see any light leaking.

OK so look, I love the Hero. But the Dust under the screen issue was VERY major for me. I'm not talking a few dust particles. I'm talking about people instantly noticing and asking what happened to the top of the screen. Luckily I live next to a really good sprint store and the tech was a nice guy and did a good job of cleaning it out on 2 separate occasions.
BTW, I can't find any issues with the EVO yet, and hopefully the dust issue is only for the Hero. (The reason its a big deal with me is because I clean my screen constantly and that's how the dust keeps getting in...

damn, you handled his tone very proffesionally. I would say if it is enough to distract you or make your usage of the EVO less enjoyable (IE. flooding onto the screen) than it is to much
I see a little bit but I bought a case and it hides the little I saw. No biggie.

All this rage from a senior emmber and not once did you answer the question the OP had or even had a rational thought towards the matter, was he complaining? no he was askign a question in which you should have either replied with a resonable response or kept your e-rage to yourself.
just not being able to turn the lights off on the buttons was nearly a deal killer for me on my droid. luckily someone came out with ledshack.
i prefer having no lights at all and just memorize the button placements. it's extremely annoying when you're reading an ebook with night mode one and having a bright light shining in your face.
so for me any light leak would be a deal breaker. so until ledshack gets updated for the evo i'll put off buying it for now.

He wasn't referring to Coleman's unfortunate death, I'm pretty sure he used that phrase just to question the issue he brought up.

Serious heart to heart.

Just to apologize in advance to posting this thread.
I really need help on a choice im on the fence about since next week I will lose my 30 day return period.
Here it is 5 Nexus S's later and almost every unit had a different problem.
1st: soft resets at least 4 times a day.
2nd: wifi doesn't work
3rd: massive screen banding.
4th: back button did not respond to touch.
Now: screen coating is peeling.
I love Gingerbread! Its going to be really hard giving this away. I love the design and profile of this phone.
I've convinced myself that its ok for the weak wifi signal and a Gps that doesn't lock as good as other phones.
I'm torn between returning it or sending it in for repair.
I also have owned every Tmobile smartphone (MT4G, G2, Vibrant), I could exchange it for one of those.
Why lol does the best phone ive seen in a while have to be seriously half-assed.
Not because of the features but because of all those problems I put above.
I want something that works pretty solid and software mix but it looks the world is in capable of doing this.
Thanks And hope some one with patience can help me out.
Idk man I just picked up nexus s today from bestbuy, I had the vibrant and the problems you've had software/device related I have not seen on mine. Mine just OTA updated about 2 hrs ago to 2.3.1. I havent had it long enough to comment on peeling but ya.
Its solid device to me so far, But I understand what your saying after 5 NS later.
Yeah I really dont feel disappointed. Just sad. lol
I dont want to send it in because thats 2 weeks without it And I HATE Samsung especially their costumer support!
Well I know ur sad about it, But in order for stuff to be changed its gotta cost samsung money that all these phones r coming back. I mean its a shame, but maybe you still have a old android phone to hold ya over?
Nope lol I sold my nexus one....worst mistake of my life I guess Ill just do the return and hopefully my patience will pay off.
What sucks is that even after six months Samsung wont improve this phone as far as defects go. Look at the vibrant lol
If you have a good one with no problems hold on to it man because I wish my luck was good enough to have a good one.
On my third one here, will use vmy black tie for another eventually. Shop around. I went to different best buys. Some get bad batched. One had 10 all with the creased glass screen. Another had none. Some of these phones were made days before the launch so though its disappointing, I believe there are good ones. I have one now but the stupid platinum case already scratched my phone.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Like the poster above me, I would try to exchange at a completely different Best Buy. Bad batches are called so for a reason--the entire batch may be faulty.
I picked up my Nexus S at 8:00AM Launch Day and haven't had a single issue with it at all. I had to go through three MT4Gs before I returned it completely, and three G2s before I was satisfied with the last one(it still had issues, but at that point, I was tired of dealing with it). And on the screen coating thing: I don't know what coating people are talking about and if there is such a coating, then I think alot of folks are expecting too much out of it. Review/unboxing videos and my own device had fingerprints showing up the second people started using it. Do folks honestly expect touchscreen phones not to show fingerprints/smudges ever? That's unrealistic, imo.
And it's only under direct light(i.e. a directional lamp pointed right at it) that I see them at all. In day to day use, it's not an issue for me.
story like this, makes me feel a really really lucky guy, since i ordered mine by mail.
it'd have been a nightmare if it had any of those defects
I appreciate all the insight so far.....
If i do go back to an old one it would probably be the G2
but Im thinking of getting another one and fit it with a screen protector right away to stop this peeling garbage.

Have you tried returning your phone at another best buy? (if you can) as others have said, if your local store has a bad batch and sales are low you may keep getting units from the same batch.
Depending on the staff, you could also ask about the number of returns that store has had recently.
Seems a shame after 5 phones not to try once more in the hope you get a good one!

This doesn't sound like a bad idea whatsoever. Seriously... I'm on my 4th SNS. I just love it too much to give up. I did two swaps at one best buy, fully returned it and drove to another one. This one seems solid now, and I have a month if I change my mind, but if that's the case, I'll return it and go online. Sounds like you guys have been having luck, no?

Major Galaxy S II issue that needs to be brought to light!

Hey everyone, I know this is going to be a lengthy post but do please read on and feel free to post your thoughts.
Here's the story... I have had my Galaxy S II for 4 weeks now and every phone call I have made & received has been problematic. Everybody I spoke to was complaining about poor quality, an echo to be more specific, they reported their own voice was being echoed back but the call is always fine on my end. What this means is the call is almost impossible to hear for the other person and they end up calling me back on another phone, its driving me mad and it really is a big issue so I decided to get it exchanged with the company I got it from (Dial-A-Phone). I only arranged the exchange today so I have to wait 3 - 5 days for the bag to arrive to post it back in.
In the meantime I was looking online to see if anyone else had this problem and I can across a thread on AndroidForums (Can't post a link here because im a new user). So it looks like it's not just me its actually a lot of people and seems like it's most Galaxy S II's! Reading the posts on the thread its clear to see that the problem only exists when a case is on the phone and that is exactly what I have been finding (I have a CaseMate Gelli).
So this is now making me think exchanging it will be pointless as the new unit will most likely be exactly the same... I did some more looking around and was pretty shocked to find how many people have this issue. I simply searched Google for "Samsung Galaxy S2 call echo" and there are a lot of results, they are all the same issue just on different forums and posted by many different people.
So my options are as follows: Not use a case which I don't want to do because I want to protect this expensive phone, take it out of the case everytime I get a phone call but that is not practical in any way! people have also said to turn off Noise Reduction when a call connects but again I don't want to have to hit "Menu" > "NR" everytime I answer or place a call! Other people say that putting tape over the Noise Reduction mic and cutting bigger mic holes in the cases makes the problem better... But once again I should NOT have to do this! I should be able to use the phone with all functions normally with a case as protection, especially as this is one of the best phones of the year, costs about £500 and none of the other brands such as HTC have problems like this!
A friend of mine who also has this issue showed me an Amazon.co.uk case review entitled "The FACTS about the Galaxy S2 echo problem & the Case-Mate Tough Case" (Again; Can't post a link) but another person who has had the issue and Samsung even tried to cover it up by discontinuing their own case because it was uncovering a problem with their flagship phone.
Anyway that's probably enough on the subject but I just thought this needs to be brought to people's attention and I am also stuck on what to do, As I said I should not have to do any silly workarounds or not use a case, and exchanging it is 99% certain to be pointless... All I can think of is get the replacement phone brand new, don't open it and sell it on eBay brand new then buy a different phone like a Galaxy Nexus for example. But it does annoy me because I love the Galaxy S II, it's a great phone in every way, its just this that ruins it.
Finally, what do you guys think I should do?
Thanks for reading this and feel free to contribute, I just think this needs to be brought to light instead of just secluded in various forums, afterall, its a phone and if the phone calls are useless it's not going to be very good for many people.
You really should search the SGS2 threads before posting. This issue is old news and if you search you will find tweaks to solve the problem.
Edit: But if you reply you will get your post count up a bit
I never had this problem since i bought it, but it's a scary thought since i am doing a lot of calling with it.
I just talked to my G.F. she said my voice comes threw like butter, no problems on any end.
But i do use a plastic casing for my Sgs2, maybe the metal case that you use is the problem my friend, why not try the plastic one's?.
Can't speak for anyone else, but I've had absolutely no issues with call quality either on my end or the person I've been speaking to. None of my friends who have a SII have complained about it either.
Now it may seem like a lot of people are complaining on forums, but Samsung have reportedly sold 10 million units according to an article on Cnet in October. How many complaints have been made in comparison to that number? I doubt it will be as high as 0.1%. So to claim that it "seems like it's most Galaxy S II's!" is a bit over dramatic. Have you really seen about 8 million (that to me would roughly equate to most), different users on one forum? Keeping in mind that it probably the same people moaning on the different forums.
Personally I'd say go for the replacement, the SII is by far the best phone I've ever had. Yes like any electronics there's going to be issues, but I'd be willing to bet the call echo issue is for a small minority of handsets.
I use the samsung official case, vented back cover, not the best protection but i never mess with noise reduction, volume on my end is normally set half way (otherwise the whole world can hear both ends of my conversation) and it has worked perfectly fine, clear as crystal since day 1.
After getting a drink spilled on mine, and subsequently replacing the charge port PCB which also houses the microphone and speaker connectors, i can tell you that there are clear variations in hardware, although minor, still significant enough to potentially be a problem.
It may be totally unrelated but if you search general for "charge port problem" you can see the discussion on different hardware revisions.
Failing that, the easy test is to try this without your case on, also try lowering speaker volume during call and try even blocking the NR mix hole, if nothing fixes it, then its clearly a hw problem and so should really be replaced by Dial A Phone or Sammy.

LOL! Yeah dude, I've been using the phone for 7 months now, no issues of this sort at all. Had a hard case, moved to a soft case a few months later (it was a gift) and all my calls have been fine
ajh94,
So you have eliminated the possible issues originated from the network operators?
No problem here, too.
Yeah I have the same problem but seem to have mostly fixed it.
I removed the rubber housing the microphone as it seemed to be blocking the hole and made the microphone hole larger by wedging a small screwdriver in it.
But I agree with some of the other posts, there are ship loads if threads on this topic. I have posted specifics of my fix on one of them.

not being funny but do you think everyone who owns phone looks at forums reports problems or even notice them. Example nice lady where i work thought her sII was perfect, I looked at it showed her pink spot and yellow tint on screen she hadent noticed and wasent that bothered tbh but point being it was there yes its wrong to generalise but arent you doing the same ?

So a nice lady showed you her new phone to you and your natural reaction was to show her "faults" with the phone that she hadn't even noticed?
Let's make sure we eliminate the network operator before creating such bold statements as "major issue". I know tons of people that own this phone at not any of them have reported this issue. Trust me, I'd here about it if there was one.

So is there a fix for this? Because my phone does the same thing when i receive and make calls. I know someone said to lower to noise.reduction on the dailer. But no clue where to find or how to do that. Thanks.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Solutions:
- Send it to the service center, they should replace the mic with a newer revision.
- Disable Noise Reduction. It's only available during a call and cannot be disabled permanently (Unless phone is rooted, see below), so you have to manually disable on each call.
- You can disable it permanently if your phone is rooted, by using VillianTweaks 1.3.1. There is a fix by LeoMar that supposedly work.
- Use a cover that doesn't cover the top and bottom sides. I've heard that the Case-Mate Barely There cases work, haven't tried it though.
Check this thread for more details.
I have the same problem and my phone is currently at the Samsung service center, though they seemed clueless about the problem so I'm not holding my breath.

Thats my point. Do you think of the 10million GS2s sold that they all have a "major fault" because of a few people mentioning it on a forum?
The vast majority of mobile phone users dont use forums to either report a fault or not to. Using a forum as proof of anything is ridiculous.
If there was a "major issue" do you not think it would be all over the news with 10million units sold? How many of the new nexus phones were sold before the volume bug was reported everywhere?

Mine does have this annoying touch problems, and it's really annoying. Yours fine? Good, please don't disrespect others complaint if yours "fine".
This is the kind of thing I don't understand, someone does a thread of the issue/news on it and suddenly comes people with their "fine" product and post how "fine" theirs are or/and that they don't care.
If your Nexus is "fine", then no need to read about it, enjoy it, but there are a lot of us who got a bad unit, I can't return it because it started after the 15 days of return warranty, so I'm stuck with it.

Yup, and the 15 day return period is a joke as well.
All defects should be covered by a free replacement warranty equal to the product warranty.....NOT REPAIR...and the customer should not pay a dime for shipping.
At least one year......after the way Google has handled this they should extend the free replacement warranty to 3 years. (Yeah right)
I'm not buying an Asus device again that's for sure, at least not until the product is well tested...

Same here.....Google could have kept me by taking care of the problem.
I'm done with them too. They gave me the run around so bad I'm still dizzy.....

Please don't disrespect us who have perfectly working products by only calling out those who have issues.
Mine works fine.
I'm not sure if 7 people in that thread is really Google taking a beating. Also, it really isn't Google's problem. It is Asus'. How many tablets were sold vs how many have the issue. I got mine on launch day and no issue. I've had to send a few different items back to Asus in the past and had to pay shipping every time, but then again, $7 for shipping vs having to buy a new item is ok in my eyes. What a gimme gimme gimme world we live in.

Next time, read well before quoting something directed to another user. I was specifically quoting him for saying that most of the complaints were exagerated, were a touch problem on a touch screen device is definitely not exagerated, besides how could you know if your device is working "fine". My quote wasn't directed at you, not interested in continuing this.

ROFL!!
"A gimme gimme world!!" - You are a corporations dream come true!!!
I paid for a defective product and in my business, I take care of my customers who receive defects.
You are SO wrong.
Such a "gimme gimme world" that I just spent money on a new tablet that actually WORKS!!! Nobody gave it to me!! IMAGINE THAT. I spent my hard earned dollars and received a functioning product - WOW!! What a novel concept.
No need to be a prick.....and you were one.
I currently have a mild problem with the touch, it's not as bad as some but its still annoying. Has anyone who has rooted and installed a custom rom experience the touch problem go away?

You use the word "so" where he uses "and". Two very different words and uses. I'm sorry if someone close has developed some form of cancer but don't bring it to an Android forum...:good:
Edit: Google isn't taking near the beating as you nay sayers lol
Mine's been working fine with no issues *knocks on wood*. I got it at launch. I don't expect any device to launch without issues but maybe it's just me. I'm not seeing this as a common widespread issue.

Okay replace and with so, my point still stands.
I also don't see how my analogy would be offensive to someone who knows someone with breast cancer so don't turn it into that, you also don't make the rules so I'll bring it up if I want to.

Yup.
My touchscreen was mildly effected also. Mostly the missing touch problem when not holding the device (ie: sitting on a table or such).
Rooted using the forum tutorials, installed sfhub's ts10 update and the touchscreen works fine now. No skips, no missing or ghost touches.
For the record, I've only been using android for about 2 weeks now so it's not that hard to learn how to apply the fix that worked on mine.
Now, should an end user have to do you this to their device? Nope, it should come this way. For mine it was such an easy fix, it would seem they have no excuse for not designing the software properly in the first place.
I quite like the rest of the devices features (ie: nice screen, battery life, speed, just right size for book reading and fitting in my coat pocket, etc) and it's quickly becoming a favorite device of mine.
As to those saying thiers works fine, I think they are valid comments. Not all the devices are effected and as is normal with human behavior, those that feel "screwed" are often the ones who are the loudest. Not that they're not justified in being upset with getting a "broken" product, they are.
But it is equally valuable to hear from those that get products that work.
How else are we going to know if there are more bad than good if we don't also hear from "the good"?

You're absolutely right: I don't make the rules and you can bring it up if you want to. I was simply suggesting that life and death disease analogies can always offend Someone and might be a little overboard on an Android forum.
You would need to replace so with and. He was making two separate points and connecting with the word and, while you are expressing cause-effect with so (should be used in conclusion). Though due to ambiguity I could be completely wrong. You brought up logic. I just thought it would be easier for two rational human beings to get to the same spot.
And my G2 screen is wonkier than my Nexus 7. Turning it off and back on seems to solve it though.
Guys, let's not argue about whether what's important to one is also important to you. Everyone has their own opinion. It looks like enough people are upset about the issues, and that is a fact.
I am one of those people. After devs here on XDA put together near perfect AOSP roms for my ThunderBolt, I expected stuff coming out of Google directly to be rock solid. N7 is my first Nexus device, and I am quite disappointed with regular random reboots that I still have, as well as intermittent touch screen issues. For example, I can't play Subway Surfers since N7 keeps ignoring some portion of screen touches (leading me to crash lol).
My HTC DNA, however, is rock solid on the stock rom. Why can't a Nexus device be the same? People typically complain of manufacturers adding stuff to android that makes it worse. Well, I am not so ready to say that now. As far as I am concerned, HTC is doing a better job with their devices than Google.
PS, TB was buggy when it came out, but all the bugs were subsequently fixed, even on Verizon!

Couldn't say it better, let's keep it a happy forum, and just to reflect what you just said, the same thing goes for me with Dead Trigger 2, I can't play it because of this, it's simply NOT fair, after I paid for this device.

Nothing but problems with my N4 - never buying another Nexus device.

So ASIDE from the problem where my touchscreen doesn't work right when plugged in, and ASIDE from the problem where my screen flickers at random, and my screen would get lines through it, now I'm having this exact problem here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyOG-FPL0Mc
Whenever I turn my phone on it has these green lines. I have tried rebooting, restoring, and different kernels. **** is still there. Phone has never been dropped, and it's out of warranty. Literally the worst phone I've ever had the unforunate experience of having to use. Sorry, but never using another Nexus device, but since I'm stuck with this piece of **** till I can get the funds for a different, less worthless phone, is there any temporary fix? At all? Pretty impossible to text or read emails or anything when the whole screen is flickering and half of it is green, gives me a goddamn migraine.
Oh yeah, let's not forget the part where I had it charged to 100%, left for work with it in my pocket, maybe a dozen times today checked the time on it, and sent two text messages, never even made a call, and got home and it was at 10% battery.
sounds like you should have changed it while it was still in warranty, why did you wait?

I figured it was a problem with 4.3 (other members here said some custom kernel and rom usually fixed it) so I figured 4.4 would fix it. It used to be a once-every-two-weeks or so problem, not a literally every time I use the phone problem, so it wasn't a problem.
Never had an issue with the N4 or my GNex before it! (GF has the GNex, and still going strong!). Looking forward to the N5 and will be getting the GF one as well in the new year!

I was talking to a friend about it - I love the premise of the Nexus line, and will still definitely support it and tell people to buy them, but I personally will never own another one myself. Well, maybe I will, when it's non-LG. May sound stupid but of all the phones I've had, besides the suicide-HTC One X, no phone has given me as many problems as this Nexus 4.. I'll be selling it for parts and adding some money to get a Note 2 or S4 as soon as I get some funds.
This thread is pointless. You aren't going to change anybody mind by posting this. This is a Q&A section.
