can i use with a 802.11N router - HD2 General

hi all i have read that the htc hd2 with a reg edit can run wireless N but is this true, can i use with with a 802.11N router, or will it only work with a 802.11G router,
i need to know as i plan to buy a long range router for work so i can stream DI.FM radio to my htc from my pc and the distance is around 50meter so i want to buy the bets possible router so i can listen to the radio glitch free
info on work network:-
1) 6mb speed via a cable
2) approx 50meters from where i walk / work

It might work at 802.11N standard, but unless your broadband speed is greater than 54Mbs then you'll have nothing to gain. Your router should be backwards compatible to allow 802.11G connection which the HD2 definitely supports, this should be good for speeds up to 54Mbs dependant upon your connection quality.

You'd still get the benefit of greater range, which would in turn mean you'd get a stronger connection. Even a really strong wifi connection on my PS3 only gives me about 700KB/s, despite being on a 20Mb connection (which I can use fully on my wired PC).
I do think, however, that 50m is somewhat optimistic, despite the claims of how good the signal should be (I believe it claims to do 250m outdoors!)
I'd love to try this myself, but don't have a wireless-N router, so can't. I'd be very interested to hear how you get on with this.

Works with ~700kb/s*
I was sending data between laptop and phone with wifi only.

well im going to take my THOMSON TG585v7 i have for my home internet to work i got it with my bethere internet, for free of the provider so im going to try it and see what i get with this,
i have no idea how good this router is though

how far indoors do you get a signal

router is downstairs and even when i'm upstairs i still get signal

Same. Got a Linksys WRT610N. With N-band enabled, not only is the signal strength better, but surfing the net and leeching YouTube vids just flies even though the Internet connection itself is only 12Mbps.

ok all ive decided to buy this for my work to send a N signal to my phone
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Edim...multi-function-wireless-access-point-repeater
my broadband speed is only 6mb at work but i just need the range so i hope this will get me at least 50meters walking distance lol.

Seems to only have 2 (small) antenna's though.
My Asus WL500W has 3 antenna's and has a great signal; whole house and garden covered.

Running DD-WRT this beauty does it's job very well.
You could, if the signal is not strong enough or has to get through walls, consider getting a directional antenna to hook up to your router.
This will greatly increase the range.

Final words about Wireless on HD

I'm not happy about Wireless reception on the HD, I was using one of these La Fonera routers as my home Hotspot with one 10db omnidireccional antenna on top of the house, it was working just fine, good signal inside the house and outside, even some neighbours use my connection, also my last pocket pc was one ETEN M700 and I had almost no problems connecting to the router.
Now with the HD I can only get stable connections with line of sight to the antenna, already tried different channels and b mode only, also changed the wireless setting to best performance on the HD and it improved only a little.
The strange thing is that the HD picks my WRT54GL wireless signal better than the other router signal, this is one router that's inside my house and the HD still picks it up better than the other router that has the outside antenna.
Now my theory is that the HD wireless driver isn't 100% compatible with atheros wireless chips.
Please help me and others to find if we can improve the wireless of the HD.
I would appreciate to have some feedback about the brands and models of routers.
Best regards
I've tried my HD with 2 different types of wireless routers.
With my cheap Netgear DG834G, it works perfectly. Range is very acceptable all round my house (which has solid old internal walls!) and even a way down the road. Streaming apps work just fine, for example listening to internet radio.
On the other hand, when I tried connecting to a friend's "Billion" brand router, it seemed a lot slower and generally a bit.. well, flakey.
From my experience, the wireless reception is acceptable. It's not going to be streaming those HD videos on Youtube but it satisfices my needs.
REception in home is 50% compared to 80 - 100% on my laptop.

Question for those who use WiFi on their X1

How far from the WiFi HotSpot can your X1 get before the connection is useless? I'm in a house and it barely works in the next room (newer house, walls made of drywall). My brother has an iPod Touch that works all over the house perfectly (same router). I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the WiFi radio on my X1?
i get v good coverage from the x1 as good as the iphone. try changing your radio firmware
WhyBe,
Is it set to best performance or best battery?
Go under settings to check.
Cheers.
Doesn't it depend on the HotSpot itself ?- I mean on the router, its signal strength and etc...I connect to my router trough 2 brick + concrete walls and have no problems at all...Always connected in every room

same , even good outside/inside the neighbours house ,
be sure to have the 1.15 or 1.16 radio (or smthing like that , the new ones)
+what poisonwolf said
and dont buy a metal case for ur phone
also helps if i slide open the phone for me ... and its good to face the router too (not with ur back towards it)

I can always connect to my router from the door on the street (I live on the first floor) and everywhere in the house including the bedroo with router being on the corridor outside.
And I did not tweak anything in my EnergyROM 3.0
Thanks all. I have never specifically changed my radio firmware. Is this something that is updated when I change ROMs? I've went from R1a to R2a to R3a. Does the radio get changed with these?
I have the X1 set to best performance.
It depends on what kind of router you have. The cheap ones are crappy. I have a medium spec one and I get good connectivity through 3 walls.
I have a LinkSys G router. It is pretty common. Everything I use works fine with it (3 laptops and iPod Touch). Only the X1 can see it but not connect.

Did you see the settings in the phone that allow you to use better Wi-Fi reception, but get poor battery life? I had problems with Wi-Fi until I set it to "better performance" rather than "better battery life".
Yes, it is set to best performance. My X1 recognizes the router but doesn't connect. I'm wondering if there is some other problem?
EDIT: OK, I just discovered that if I turn off the phone radio, the WiFi works properly. Is it supposed to be this way?
with linksys and all other routers really one have to upgrade the firmware once in awhile
to get best support with newer devices

Nope. There is a problem. I have no idea what it could be though . Maybe an update is a good thought.
I only use stock ROMs and haven't really tweaked my system beyond factory state. So I don't see why I need to update anything. I'm thinking there is some sort of conflict between my internet settings for the phone and the internet settings for the WiFi connection?

Mine did that when I 1st tried to set it up, it would find the network (hidden) ok, but would not connect. No matter what I tried, even though 2 pc's (wired), laptop (wireless), xbox (wired) & iPod touch (wireless) were working fine.
I gave up on the X1 and turned my attention to the router, tried a static IP for the X1 etc (it's back on DCHP now), after rebooting the router, the X1 connected and worked fine and it has ever since. I have no idea why - but initially it would not connect - something funny with the router.
I have a netgear router and every now and then kicks me off. i have to disable my wifi on the x1 and reconnect or even power off the router and back on for it to work.
Turn off your router for 1 minute and power back on then try to reconnect your x1.
I have a Linksys WRT160N router and it actually doesn't even detect it when it transmits mixed speed, only of I put it on B and G it detects it.
Otherwise the signal is average, a bit worse then my laptop.

I only use Wi-Fi at my university. Well basically my Wi-Fi works everywhere around campus, at the dorms, and at the movie theater right next to school.
It's freaking great, but I prefer 3G. I just can't afford it.

Wifi sucks on touch HD

When I first bought the touch HD I was thinking how good it would be to have this phone while having wifi with the lack of 3g for tmobile in the us, but it turns out that the wifi acutally suck! I have a iPod touch 2g And the wifi works great with blazing speed. I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod. I been very disappoint with this phone for simple fact that this phone recieves wifi poorly. Anyone can help me out with this problem would be much appreciated because despite the wifi problem I love the phone cause the 3.8 screen is so damn sexual lol.
I've no such issues!
Try to set wifi power options to performance. Also, Enabling G Mode (with SKTools is one of the ways) helps improve speed.
Thanks for the info but it might be the lack of range of my router cause I have been on my wifi with the phone before but I get disconnected frequently and most the time it doesn't even show up or detect it but I don't have that problem with the iPod. With iPod I seem to get wifi everywhere. I'm starting to believe the iPod is better might sell it and get a iPhone or maybe a hero but don't know if I'm willing to spend 600+ on another phone
Next time put [rant] on the title
My wifi connects well to open, WEP, and WPA connections. I tried numerous access points (at least 30), even 802.11n APs in mixed g mode. It even connects to Apple Airport (802.11g). The connection is stable both on power saving and best performance, but I think I get much better speeds on average with best performance.
Its wifi range is much better than my little HP 613 smartphone, but again worse than my notebook. I get 54Mbit connection with signal quality of about 50% at 10 meters through a wall and then it automatically finds another channel on another AP. It roams (handover) APs better than some Lenovo r61 laptops around!
But I am not satisfied with its speed (even on best performance) - it finishes copying a 700MB file on a 54 Mbit connection in 30-40 minutes using total commander and saving on storage card. That means average speed is around 300-400KB/s - laptop does the same (same AP, same file, same network settings) at 1.6-1.8 MB/s in around 7 minutes.
I also noticed that saving on storage card is slighty faster than into the main memory...

Hmm, are you sure that you don't compare two different situations ? Did you also try connecting to Wifi with your iPod while already being connected with your Blackstone ?
My personal experience shows me that the Touch HD seems to have a better radio than the iPhone 3G. Have you upgraded to the latest Blackstone stock ROM and radio available on the HTC website or XDA Devs ? Whether or not the radio also affects Wifi unfortunately I don't know.
Moreover, use WifiMonster to monitor the strength of the signal, it'll help you discover the best spots for using Wifi. I even receive Wifi signals from the neighbors' houses in my own house (not speaking about appartments), of course that always depends on the room !
BTW I'm pretty sure that a Hero won't solve your problem, it's the same old hardware specs as on the Blackstone.
The Wifi on my device works perfectly and i have had no issues at all with signal or quality. I have had more problems with my ipod than the HTC, are you sure its not the WIFI AP you are trying to connect to? Also are you using stock rom or custom?
I'm using the Energy ROM. I'm assume its my wifi signal its very weak and my touch hd cant seem to detect it. With my ipod i shows up and i can connect to it...will updating the radio make a difference?
I came across a startling discovery the other day regarding the Touch HD wifi. I was also having issues at home with weak wifi signal. I didn’t seem to have this problem with public access hot spots.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse connected to my computer and very rarely turn that computer off. I found that when my computer was off I would get a rock solid connection to my home wifi, but when the computer was on it would drop in and out. I narrowed it down to the wireless mouse was interfering with the Touch HD wifi connection.
I tried all different channels on my router, but as long as the Logitech mouse was plugged it I would get wifi dropouts. But as soon as I unplugged the mouse and the radio dongle, I wouldn’t have any problems with the Touch HD wifi.
I can’t comment if this is your issue, but something might be interfering in the 2.4Ghz with wifi.
Guys,
Sometimes even cordless phones, microwaves, etc will interfere with the connection.
Cheers.
As Poison Wolf correctly pointed out, other household items can interfere with the wireless frequency. Try changing the channel that's being used to transmit from your box (This will involve changing some settings on your wireless router so do some research before you fiddle around with it) I have had to do this before and can confirm it can make a massive difference.

Everybody has this problem because the card seems not capable of more speed.
But it seems nearly nobody cares.

Stron,
Hmm, interesting. The only reasoning I can think of is that perhaps there's a limiting factor in order to reduce the heat or something? I don't see why they would cap the speeds.
Cheers.
What if it is capable of connecting at 54 Mbit, but can actually do only 11 Mbit? Nice trick. I hope it is just a bad idea.

HD2 low WiFi reception

Is it normal that my hd2 has lower wifi reception than my laptop? I mean, my router is in the living room and i have 4 to 5 Bars of wifi signal on my laptop in the bedroom, but i have only one bar on my HD2! There are two walls(one room) between living room and bedroom? I've try'd it at my friends house with his laptop and his router, it's the same thing.
Is it normal the phone to have lower reception or may i try to flash a new radio?
I'm using stock ROM 1.48 with radio 2.05.
Thanks in advance!
doesn't anybody have this problem?
My HD2 gets slightly less reception bars than my
laptop in the same location. Could be the way the meters are calibrated, but more likely the larger antenna in the laptop. With wireless N enabled my internet speed tests seem about the same with two bars as with three. Almost same with N disabled.
I have a linksys WRT54GL router and the HD2 gets low signal strength. Only about 7m away from the router and behind one wall. So I am not sure what is up. The router also has 7db antenna attached.
Laptops get much better signal strength. Not sure what the issue is.
A phone doesn't have the same amount of Power as a laptop nor the Antennas Range ... On my Laptop i get several WiFi Signals while on my HD2 I only get two... In the Same location
Could be that you need the wireless N enabled on your phone use the search option
Thanks for the tip about the wireless N enabled on the phone.
I understand that laptops have higher powered antennas. But even if I place the phone right next to the router it will not get 100% signal strength. It will go to maybe 50-60% tops. This is with the phone right next to the router.
Maybe a radio upgrade etc might be on order.
Will try the N enabled feature 1st, even though I use a G router.
try to remove the battery cover. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785907
antenna in your laptop will be much bigger and better located than the one in your phone
with a WRT54GL Router The Wireless-N Option will have no effect.
Your router only supports Wireless-G

[Q] Wi-Fi speed incredibly slow

I've noticed that my wi-fi speeds are hell of a lot slower than 3G speeds. Anyone experiencing similar issue?
wi-fi: DL- 56kbps UL- 78kbps ping- 1218
3G: DL- 3106kbps UL- 1228kbps ping- 131
Device: Xperia Arc
With my previous phone, which was Xperia X1 I had much better results on wi-fi than on 3G. Also because X1 runs on WM6.1 there are settings to improve wifi performance, Android doesn't have anything of the kind as far as I know.
My modem is b/g, Arc has b/g/n. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
I wonder what causes this and what could be done to solve the issue.
30 minutes usage of 3G network makes battery very hot, almost kill the phone. Need hardware reset again.
However wifi seems perfect doing well for me.
ARC sometime do run into battery problem, need to give it restart/reset.
No problems with hot battery here on 3G or anything else but the wi-fi speeds are disgraceful.
ive noticed the wifi signal isn't very strong on my arc, even when i'm sat next to router with no other devices near me. My X8 had superb wifi connection speeds, but my arc sometimes won't even detect wifi signals that my x8 had no problem connecting to.
I copied a video to my Arc over wifi @ about 900k/s. It was in the same room as my router. No issues here, except maybe a little less good reception than my laptop, which is normal.
My router is in my living room, I use wifi on my arc all the time from my bedroom and while "sitting on my throne" in the bathroom. No issues.
Maybe you have a loose wi-fi antenna in the phone? (not sure if that's even possible)
I can use the phone in the house too but the speeds are low. If it was the possibly loose antenna I wouldn't be able to fix it without voiding my warranty.
Speaking of warranty... Why doesn't SE say anything about this issue? Would they like me to return the phone to them?

sry, read too fast through topic, thought was more like a general question.
b/g/n device on b/g router is no problem. you should test with different security encryption and on other networks so you can see if it is a problem with your device or router.
Hi, just wondering because I do not have my Arc yet.
Does it happen if the phone is on a table (ie. no "death-gripping
' it, who knows if that s an issue)?
Do you have a cover? on my DHD, a simple gel or whatever case would butcher the GPS performances, for example. Have to take it out of it if I want it to work properly.
Well, I did some more testing today and this thing has me puzzled. First off in the morning I got blazing speeds (in excess of 6500kbps down) on my wifi but in consequent tests the speed was slow (about 50kbps down) again. I went to my neighbours house to try it on his wifi and it ran fast there (6700kbps down). So obviously the Arc wifi can run fast too.
I'm thinking it might have something to do with router configuration as suggested here earlier. My neighbour has b/g/n router and uses WEP encryption. I have b/g router and use WPA2-PSK. I might try to reconfigure and see if it helps.
@kipue - I have no cover on the phone and it runs slow whether the phone is in my hand or on the table.
I wonder what SE might have to say about this issue.

don't think Arc has death grip problems. tested a lot, signal strength weakens only when i cover the top chrome line (where power button is) with my finger
OK, I think I solved it, for now at least. I changed wifi encryption to WEP and in about 10 speed tests the download speeds ranged from 5000kbps to 9000kbps.
I'm not happy about switching from WPA2 to WEP either but what good is secure wifi if I can't use it? It's not like I'm keeping any secrets here and living in a little village I doubt there are many identity thieves prowling this dead end street.
Try wpa/wpa2 personal/enterprise with tkip/aes, maybe you find a combination witch works fine
