Man I love having everything that could be fun and useful on my G1, so far I am at 149 apps. How many does everyone else have? Also this doesnt hurt the SD card holding all this does it? =/
Anyways last night, some new apps came up like a G1 FTP Server for file transferring. So thats nifty. ConnectBot is good too.
Anyways just wondering, having so many apps, does it slow up the G1 any or can the G1 be like a PPC and handle all this? Open source android is nice but downside is, so many apps that have potential or worth putting on the G1 add up heh.

There is a difference between how many applications you have installed versus how many applications you have running.
I tell people who ask that I have maybe 13k mp3's on my computer and the common response is "omg your computer must be so slow!"
wtf?
Users seem to correlate lots of stuff on device = slow device.
Correlation does not imply causation
Ah while I understand your post, the G1 is a tad different. Afterall the Apps ARE installed to the SD. As you know the G1 itself if "running" too many apps would cause it to lag up. However having alot of apps too I dont know if it slows down the G1 by trying to have it all show up or so. Imagine this. You have EVERYTHING on your Windows Desktop, that has been known to cause slowdowns too, Its not running but the system still maps to it and tracks it so to say.
Plus some apps install and auto run in the background. Since its loading off the SD, depending on the class of your SD it could cause sluggishness I would say.
Not sure what the count is exactly, but I have backups on my sd card, my netbook, and my laptop. Sometimes I download apps, back them up, uninstall and just store them on my comp just incase I might need them someday. Haha

I have ten apps installed.
By the way, while apps that are not running will not cause slowdown perse, some apps start background services or periodic recurring timers (e.g. Loopt, Twidroid) which can cause slowdown.
I have 368 Applications. only problem- HOME SCREEN RELOADS AFTER COMING OUT OF APP
368? WOW You must install everything that sucks too. =p
What do you have thats interesting maybe? =D

i have a lot of things. All gameloft games(Bought it from xda user gameloft) all ea games(from handloft.com), Snesoid, Gnesoid, Jrioni terminal(for gp2x), Sim Checker Cupcake, Nesoid,Youtube downloader, Steamy window, Spray can, Meridian, Mechanics TOuch, Military Madness, VNC Viewer, Phone MY PC, IM+, Better Keyboard, Blues etc. These are some of the apps i can remember. I dont install apps that suck . They are 368 +. A week ago with aTrackdog they were 368. I use Swapper, SetCPU to run my phone smoothly. They really help. I have windows X, Debian etc. running too. 1200+ songs, 3+ movies
Swapper, what about the warnings about how bad that actually is?
Also Windows X and Debian, tell me how are those and is there a guide somewhere to get info on it and easy to setup?
Military Madness...? WHERE?! I love games like Battle Isle!
SetCPU tell me about it some, Ive been wondering about it but is OCing really worth it on the G1?
Kk I found a xwindows/debian guide.
http://www.androidfanatic.com/cms/community-forums.html?func=view&catid=9&id=1615
Everything i use is worth using coz i have to use them regularly. About swapper, most SD cards todayhave the power to cover the damage done(most class 6). So its worth. You should have root to enjoy your g1. SETCPU- my g1 is clocked at 528 MHz permanently so i dont experience lag.
Btw as you can tell another point of this thread is to get info on apps. =)
But online, got a link for a good class 6? Ive had issues trying to determine WHICH is a class 6 or what.. Upgraded to a 4GB Sandisk which runs better but I still am not sure its class.
Also Doesnt the setCPU drain your battery more? Any risks on that?
dont worry anout battery it is not much affected
i have about 135 apps
I am very picky about the apps I install on my devices. According to aTrackDog, there are 46 on my G1, but I probably use half of them. Time to do some cleaning

This makes me feel a little better since I only have 314 lol. My ext3 partition is 2GB with Debian installed. No need to really delete anything
How many others here use SetCPU, whats stable, a solid increase and wont hurt the G1 or battery? Also yea, its nice to compare notes heh. Keep installing new apps all the time.
I WISH however that the market was easier to navagate tho.. Like add a "Apps added since you last checked" type of thing or DATE them. "Apps added on "x" date" cause its a pain to track them since looking last with so much junkware being added and your limited to scrolling. =/
atrackdog is least a VERY helpful tool.. if your G1 doesnt know its installed in the market. Least this app does..

Some people still navigate the Market on their phone? I always use Cyrket (Newest Content category seems close to what you're looking for) and then when I find something of interest search for it directly on the phone.
Oh that website is nice, I have seen it, but doesnt help TOO much for installing it to your G1 Not like you can click on the website and have it install to the G1 like Xbox live lol.
I have been playing around with ATT Android phones over the last several months. I started with a Nexus One, nice phone very fast. Then purchased an Aria for the fun of it... again fast phone but too small. Lastly yesterday I picked up the Captivate, and with a 1ghz, the Aria seems faster than this phone. Seems to lag between screens and boot. Is it just me or anyone else see this? Is there a quick fix for this? Anyone?
Oh I hate touchwiz, worthless crap for a UI.....loaded ADW launcher instead
thanks
Larry
It really is a software thing with Touchwiz. After I installed Launcher pro I never looked back and it has been a lot faster.
There may be a bunch of apps running slowing the phone down. I have Advanced task killer, and kill a bunch of app every once in a while when It starts feeling slow.

Where did you find this Launcher pro, and how much faster is it than stock?
Check #17 out in this post. The Euro version owners have known about this for some time.
There are some fixes - but, most likely not until we can get some custom ROMS.
Launcher Pro helps a lot, just search the app market for it.
Ive been doing side by side comparisons of my N1 running CM6 and the Captivate all day. The Captivate is faster 95% of the time. Both running ADW launcher.
You can load ADW or LauncherPro from the Market. When you set as default home, you will not be able to use "Touchwiz" widgets.......

A crapload faster. After installing it, the device is like lightning , haven't had any pauses. Just search the market. Think it is a beta.
Yes to all new samsung galaxy S owners get rid of the ****ty touchwiz launcher it sucks and its laggy as hell, get launcher pro instead.
whats the best widget pack to replace the touchwiz ones
is there a way to port sense widgets? (push from a htc/pull to captivate or something)

eventually. Widget packs.. hmm you should just try out new stuff, explore and what not
Also, new news so to speak - LauncherPro will be coming out with a lot of integrated widgets that are similar to the SenseUI widgets.
Koxx - here on xda has made some really great widgets. I think I have purchased them all. MoonSpoon (used to be a very active themer and now is a lurker due to being busy elsewhere) made themes for all of Koxx's widgets.
If I just want to go back to the default Android drawer can I install the Launcher.apk from a Cyanogen 5.8 rom?
Even with Launcher Pro there seems to be some lagging issues. On the Vibrant thread, the a subject on Fixing Stalling/Lagging. On the vibrant it seems you can partition your SD card and have the files run off of it. They said that it runs faster on the sd card then the built in memory card. I trying to do this procedure but kind of stuck. I can't seem to get the phone in download mode. Still searching around if i can find out i let you guys know. Meantime check out the thread and if you find out or know how post it up on the Captivate side. Not much instructions on "HOW TO MOD CAPTIVATE" in our thread.

Arguably, I don't see why this wouldn't work on the Captivate. Granted, I'm not going to be the one to try it right now, but it really should work just like that. Anyone feeling ballsy enough to give it a try?

I did it. It works great.
No more stalling at the moment, and my Quadrant score went up 100 points as well.
But be sure to follow the steps, and make sure you have enough room in data/data, and keep in mind that you can still fill data/data up with app installation. Google Earth is particularly bad about eating space here.
And keep in mind that the Galaxy S people that did this find that eventually it starts to stall again, so this is a band-aid.
When I get home tonight, I'll try the better, more effective SD card method, don't have an easy way to make an /ext3 partition on an SD card at the moment.

You need an external SD card, a program that will let you partition the ext3 format, and then you just need to follow their commands. Where are you getting stuck, maybe I can help guide you.

There's a few tools, but most will require a live CD to utilize.
Does anyone really think that the lag problems can be fixed by an official firmware update form Samsung? It seems that this is a hardware problem only: Samsung chose slow memory for the filesystem on which /data/ lives. How can this be overcome in an official update? Sure, there are some hacks out there that require buying an sdcard (and then never removing it) or using up the very last bit of NAND which will surely cause problems for some with lots of apps or with apps that have large databases. These hacks will probably work well for some, but Samsung won't do anything unless it is transparent to the end-user and works well for everyone. Is it even possible for them to do it?
I think there's a guide somewhere here that changes the filesystem to EXT3/EXT4 which improves performance.
Im very confident Samsung vill fix the "lags" hell Im on stock firmware and just by using luncher pro the lags are much less of a problem. Lets wait for the first official firmware update before we all start to panic

I think ext3/ext4 is part of one of the hacks involving an external sd card. It probably works very well, but is not an option for Samsung unless they decide to give every one a free sd card.

There is no question that there is, nearly terrible, issues with stock I/O performance. Everything else is zippy, even more so when you use LauncherPro with cached pages. Games are super fast, which makes me think that the memory speed isn't an issue for long-term performance. I do wish the internal storage was NAND, but other than that I think the hardware is top-notch and I wouldn't trade it away.

I agreed that everything but the io is excellent. However I rely on several i/o intensive apps like calendar, shopping lists, task managers, and all of these really suffer. I hope I am wrong and that samsung find a way to fix it.

same here.
the lag is caused by the touchwiz interface over android ....remove touchwiz and it will be as fast as the nexus
As mentioned the third party stuff isn't really amazingly optimized at this point, but I reckon just changing the values at which levels android frees up memory should take care of most lags, even on stock firmwares.
Running JM2 with ext4 fix and AutoKiller I hardly ever notice any lags on my phone, if anything some apps sometimes takes half a second too long to load but it's nothing I can't live with.

Saying that there is no lag for anybody just doesn't work. There are many, many documented reports of the lag here, youtube, other forums, etc... It's a known problem. I am using LauncherPro and I still have lag problems. Most notably, when I long press on a screen to create a new shortcut, it takes launcherpro sometimes about 15 seconds to bring up the list of applications. There are many other case of things taking 2 seconds when they should be nearly instantaneous.
The NAND fix does work: as a test I moved the Astrid task manager database to /dbdata and now Astrid flies. However, I don't believe that Samsung will be able to use the NAND memory as part of an official fix. Does anyone have any ideas or predictions on how Samsung can solve this problem?
I use Launcher Pro, task killer and still have SEVERE lag. Also very curious as to what solution Samsung mighy have up their sleeves and when we can hope it will br released.

I'm starting to think that people who say they see no lag at all without any fix are either trying to convince themselves or just lack the ability to notice. I know I'm practically calling people delusional here, no offense, but come on... that would mean there's like a 1% of all shipped units that mount superfast internal SDs, that's unlikely.
Internal SDs are slow as &%£$. EXT4 on external SD fixes the problem for good. Maybe we're just gonna have to live with it...

Yeah they all lag out of the box, no one got lucky and got sent a special/custom version with different hardware that doesn't lag.
Some people obviously are more acceptable of lag and don't call a small delay lag etc . There are some of course that after spending a lot on a device don't want to admit its flawed in some areas so keep saying mine doesn't lag etc, people can be strange sometimes .
Not all have the 10 seconds of black screens etc that you see on some of the youtube videos but without applying any fixes they all have delays here and there.
I agree with the above 2 posters, lag is VERY obvious out of the box. I came from Winmo 6 (where lag is the norm and not the exception...lol), so when I first got the SGS I too was very tolerant of the lag and was wondering what the heck people was complaining about.
Then I got to try out my friend's Desire. Everything just "moves" so fluidly...opening app drawer, changing wallpapers, opening the dialer, contact page, handcent etc. When I got back to my SGS I realize what I was missing. The SGS on paper is more powerful than Desire but doesn't perform as sweetly, UI-wise.
So far, mimocan fix + autokiller maybe mitigate 80% of it. But sometimes still lags badly, for eg; when adding shortcut ...the application list takes ages to come up. or adding widgets.
Anytime a new firmware leaks and we hear of people saying lag is fix...but I am still sceptical. I am on JG5 and things are still as before. Still need to apply fix.
With the external sd card partitioned to ext4, do you need a fast sd card? or would a class 2 work just as well for this lag fix?

Hi,
My partner picked up an arc in the week, and we have both noticed the performance is rather poor on occassion. Sometimes loading an app will take ages (10secs), or even the app drawer will take a long time to open or to exit back to the home screen.
We also had a low memory warning from tasked and upon checking there was only 16mb free with nothing obvious taking up the resources.
Has anyone else noticed this? Firmware version is 3.0.A.2.184
Did you try to do factory reset? this helped for some people. My arc is really fast and everything works great.
with low memory you mean the internal storage? this happens if you installed to many apps. I always move games to the SD this saves some memory

Don't really want to do a factory reset a few days after getting it (I know it might help, but it's more the principle...)
Most the of time it feels pretty snappy, but every so often it just seems to lag for a while.
As for low memory, I was referring to RAM not storage. Internal storage has something like 170mb free, but RAM seems to be constantly running with ~60mb free and dips down to <20mb even with not much running.
The only things that should be running in the background are twitter, facebook and Wordsfree.
i have degraded performance though not that worse, i suspect mine was caused by running background app like yahoo messenger, facebook, g talk and possibly go weather.
also change home to go launcher. this may not be correct, but with default se launcher certain app get killed faster (maps). also opera mobile contents somehow get purged a lot with go launcher (note : this may not be true).
currently available ram drop to 32 or less in hours while previously it took days (or maybe never) to drop below 100 mb ram. sigh..

Performance on Go Launcher was woeful for me, but with the SE launcher and Launcher Pro it seems fine, well aside from the issues in the OP anyhow.
sigh, se default screen protector and input keyboard are slippery. to op, i see that only facebook is what we have in common.
i've completely log out and remove fb data but still it run in the background. any advice to stop it from running (non rooted phone please)?
does anyone know if freeze -ing app stop it from loading or just froze it in memory?
thanks for your input on go launcher and quick reply.
I'm always like around 150MB free RAM, i don't use any kind of task killer nor do i kill anyting. there are 20 apps running right now. The phone can lag when syncing (you see the syncing icon then) but in overall it works really smooth.
I think there is something really messed up. i think you will be beter off with factory reset. if you have root you can use titanium backup.
Funny how all of us jump in saying do.a factory reset or reinstall this or is got to be a app running in the background lol. Phone is beautiful and all but factory ROM is crap! I installed the NAG rom and seems to be helping a bit but yes stock launcher lags crazy. I hate when u have to do so much **** to a phone to make it run better. That would be us but a average person that buys this phone for daily use with no idea of RAM or a different launcher would say **** this phone. To slow. Lol. I love the camera that's why I'm putting up with this. I have two lines tho. Using a Thunderbolt too. Yes it is faster. Snappier.

One of the programs that's running in background might be messing up. Go to running service and kill all the custom applications (NOT DEFAULT ONES) then see how it works. Less than 20MB RAM will cause performance issues. Uninstall software that you don't use much. Uninstall task killer software if you have one. I find that unstable. If that didn't do the trick then as said before Factory reset would be a best option.

I'm watching this forum for a long time, and it's amazing how much the community split up - 80% of users love the phone and have no problem with it, while 20% moan about performance and etc.
**** happens; you maybe got a phone with faulty hardware, or something else, w/e - do a factory reset before crying how crap the phone is, common sense really.
My phone doesn't lag or does the browser and ram always sits over 100mb
I just rebooted my device after 40 days of continuous usage.

he didnt factory reset,,, he re installed the rom... i did the same .. i still have to reboot at least once a day.. phone cant handle me.. i text a lot .pictures taken and web and also google music.. gets laggy after a few hours .. this is not my first or second android phone .. there is something on the ARC that eats memory and wont free it up its like the phone performer slowly die....and the only way to revive it is with a reboot .. still love it tho.... dont mind rebooting once daily
have to agree that something is definitely leaking memory, which only seems recoverable by a proper reboot.. (using the button on the top and not reboot widget..)
trying to figure out what is causing it isn't proving to be a simple task..

I had a similar issue and as much as it might be against your prinicples, I did a factory reset and the phone is now fine. It's much easier to flash an android phone as all my contacts are synced with my google account, most of the apps back up their settings to the SD card and all of the apps you've bought you just redownload from the marketplace, hell google even have my wpa key to get on my wifi. If you aren't prepared to reflash then learn to live with the lag but I think you would find it will help a lot
just a thought, perhaps browser cache put a lot of strain on flash chip? i know people said latency/fragmentation is not an issue on them, but again i've seen many slow down/unresponsiveness on worse scenario.
I always *****ed that ICS was painfully laggy and slow.. And always had people act like I was talking crazy talk..
So.. On a whim I did something I avoided like the plague.. Instead of a normal factory reset, I also formated USB storage which was never erased since I bought the phone at launch.. Holy crap it fixed laggy ICS.. The phone absolutely flew now and better than I remember Gingerbread.. It was the easiest `fix' I've ever ran across.
So, any of you guys who know the file system well.. What could have been on the USB storage to cripple the performance so much? It was always slow regardless of formatting data/system/ etc etc (everything you do before installing a new ROM etc).. I know I've read others who thought ICS was laggy.. If I were you I'd ask yourself when was the last time you formated USB storage and try it.. It was about a 300% difference in performance..
Who knows. Probably just junk left over from old apps and pics. I'm sure there is an actual answer. I've heard if the USB format fixing other issues as well. Maybe others will follow suit and try. So many people complaining about it. Lol.

MOST issues get sorted through /system and data/factory resets though (this deletes .android_secure). If there are still issues, sdcard should go too. Never had problems with any devices I've used like this.
Glad you've happily moved on though. Enjoy ICS.
for one thing, a clean sdcard means less work for the media scanner running in the background, which frees up the cpu used on the media scanner. you should backup important stuffs on the sdcard, nandroid, reformat the sdcard every few months.
