I Love It !!!
Hey .. thank you for the links !!
I totally love this UMPC.. this is the best device ever released yet ... I have to wait about 6months to have it .. but I want it as soon as possible.
It will be so nice using a big WinMobile screen (better than the small 320x240 on a 2"8 screen). Vista is a so nice OS... I will have my 2 favourites OS on the same device.. I can't believe it !
HTC has put everything needed in the device. The review is nice.. but they should have introduced origami 2.0 ... not just showing the start animation.
If someone want to offer one ... I take it !
Unless they have sorted out the 2 hour battery life, it will remain a gimmick and no buyer will be satisfied with the purchase
I was really into the shift until I spent about three hours with a Fujitsu Lifebook P1620 today. 9" touch-screen convertible, 1.2ghz dual core, 100mb hard drive, vista or tablet xp, PC card slot (hello cheap wireless 3g card), VGA out, fingerprint reader, 3 USB ports, bluetooth, wlan, touchscreen works great for writing/browsing (it is passive digitizer though), you can touch type on it with some practice, and over 5 hour battery life My 2008 budget comes in next week and I am absolutely buying one.
Making calls with shift seems like it will require a hack, no simple soft-reset for the crippled wm6, embarrasing battery life, 5 minute cold-boot time for vista, etc. Why pay nearly $2k for a gimmicky device that in the end doesn't really do what a phone or a laptop can do. We all have a phone anyway...who wants to carry that monster to the pub just so you don't miss a phone call??
Well. I got mine 24 hours ago and I like it. Keyboard is nice. I cand write using my 10 fingers after some training. Battery life isnt bad and if I need more live I ve a power bank that gives me 7 hours more. wifi, hsdpa and bt works very well. It moves Vista nicely. I ve installed my development tools (Visual Studio 2008, eclipse and jboss) and work nice. VGA output letme use hi res at home with a lcd screen. I wasnt very convinced when I bought it but by now I am very satisfied

well .. you are wrong on many things ! ouch ....
1°) making calls is still not sure that it will require a hack ... you can see french sites telling that it is a COMPLETE PHONE... so I think that it could depends on the country you buy it.... we'll see !
2°) for WM6 there are ability to soft-reset it .... because it will be A REAL WM6.. even if they talk about "Snap-Vue" it IS WM6.... what they put upon will never be enough to change it in another OS... it is running WM6 !
3°) embrassaing battery life ? if you are using WinMobile .. you will have about 1 week of battery life.... it's enough ! Vista is so greedy that you should never think about using it without a power supply.
4°) 5 minutes cold-boot time ... oh my god ! .. you are completely wrong !!!!!! it is faster than that .. it is about a minute ... not more than 2 minutes ! And with Vista SP1 it is the same time for hibernate boot ! (hibernate was not good with preview Shifts... because of Vista.. but Vista SP1 is a little better). On the video : vista starts at 6:36 and is running at 7:40 ... 1:04 for resuming from hibernate !
5°) The device is more about 1200$ .. than 2k$ ..
If you don't know anything about the real shift spec.... I understand why unuseful 9" laptop seems interesting for you !

nice !! have you tried installing winmobile application sending a cab by mail ? just to be sure that we will be able to install everything we need .
is there any way to shutdown both (winmobile and vista) ? Something about voice calls?
My main concern is if I'll be able to run full version of WM and access files on hard drive or SD card and work with them. If yes, I'm in! Anyone has been able to hack it so far?
No luck sending the cab because you can save it to disk (outlook doesnt want to execute it because It says is unsafe). But after saving it I dont know how to execute it....
I havent tried phone calls. well, I dont know how. Vista can be turned off, of course. But you can turn off windows mobile. Even I dont know how to reset it (except remove one second the battery). But I am sure we will solve all this issues.
Dani
once saved to disk, press CTRL while tap and holding on the clock. Select run
type FEXPLORE or FEXPLORER (don't remember)
Launch your cab.

CTRL while tap and holding on the clock ?? Seems to be a pretty good hack !
danielherrero .. plz confirm that it works
1. YOu prove my point. phone functions are NOT widely available, if at all. I am glad you red something on a frech website, but I have actually held and used one of these and it did NOT make phone calls out of the box. Yeah, we can hack to do that if bought in a non-voice approved area, and get no support/possibly void the warranty. nice.
2. show me a soft reset hole, cause the one I played with didn't have one. THere is another thread in this forum from a guy who has to take the battery out of the shift he actually has in his hands to soft-reset. Your syllogistic argument is silly.
3. battery life of one week when using the phone...which I already carry one of, if you want to use the pc part of it the battery life is miserable so what's the point of having it there when it must be tethered to a wall wort at all times.
4. Watch the unboxing vids, this thing takes ages to cold boot vista, which i what i was talking about, not the hibernate resume you are quoting. also, the one I used for several hours took about 4.5 minutes to load vista. Desktop PC's fully specced have trouble loading vista in one minute my freind. IF that has been solved on newer releases I would like to hear someone who is holding one right now say that. Thanks for the tip to "never use vista without a power supply" now please continue to prove my point about the pc function of this thing being a joke by telling me how the shift can't be downgraded to xp....
5. The cheapest I have ever seen advertised for the shift is on the edge of $1700 US. Where are you seeing them for $1200?? I have seen them for 1200 EUROS, which is about $1680 US. Note that euros and us dollars are worth a different amount.
I'm not trying to bash the shift. Nor do I want some kind of flame war with you. I am reporting my experiences on actually having used both of these devices. I am sure that for some people the shift fills the little niche that they need. My point was that for me, and I would venture that for a lot of business users, the shift has a lot of shortcomings and is not the right device.
Your post makes me pretty sure that you have never ever actually used either of these devices, so you shouldn't tell people that they don't know anything about something you are even less informed about. If someone who owns one of these and is using it now wants take issues with my statements, I am very ready to listen. Perhaps the models they have are better than the one I used, if so I'd love to hear about it...from people who have one in thier hands!

No luck....
It was working on a previous ROM. I am talking about the CTRL key from the physical keyboard. Try from the mail app for example. If it's not the clock, it's the battery icon.
As a side note, did you get the unit as a reviewer, or did you actually bought it from somewhere where anybody else can?

I have used the shift for about half an hour on a demo day (Microsoft Unified Communication launch). But I have not bought it yet.
1. yeah .. but I hope for a hack (without a warranty void !)
2. it seems that there are no soft-reset hole..but I'm sure that we will be able to soft reset with a program without having to have full WM6
3. battery life on my laptop is half an hour.. so the shift is more than what I'm used to ... maybe this is why I'm not worried about. and if you have read my scenario (few threads before) you would see that the Shift is not on a battery life that much in Vista mode.
4. I have watch the unboxed videos and read many reviews about the shift.. and what they said was always "resuming from hibernate take longer time than a cold boot" and that a cold boot take about a minute and a half to 2 minutes but these times were from the "test prototype" of the shift. And if resuming from hibernate take only a minute... you just have to use it and you should not care about the cold boot time ! (I'm on vista on my desktop and always use hibernation mode ... and it comes back in less than 30 seconds .. and from sleep in less than 2 seconds... but it's a faster computer than the shift).
5. I have read a lot about $1200 announced before the official released ... but maybe the price is a higher .. the iphone is 1000€ and I think that it is less than $1000 ... so don't believe that the price in € is significant to the price in $ .. it used to be the same price ($1000 --> 1000€ .. even if $1000 is only 680€) but I can't say if there is shops where the shift will be under $1400.
I don't want to enter in a war with you too .. I'm just sharing my opinion that's all. I have read a lot on the shift for more than a year (like so many people) and I'm not a current owner of a shift.

.. I hope we will find out to do it ... I'm sure there is a way ! because they need to remove snapvue for the support !
I think the clue is to know how the updates will be applied. Probably It will be done using vista side. So I think there will be a way from this side to access flash chip WM6. This weekend I couldnt research about it but tomorrow I will do it because I want to install bandswitch to use gprs with direct push instead of umts to increase battery live. (althought I ve to say battery live is good so far..
Dani
ps. I bought it on shopping center in Madrid, Spain. They have it since last monday.
There is a way from vista, because the manual state you can install a certificate for the WM side from the vista control pannel. I think this is just a com port to redirect on the WM part for getting AS, but if the trick I gave you doesn't work, it's just a question of time before getting access to the OS.
Maybe you could try on you PDA to check what I'm talking about. Presse the center of your D pad instead of CTRL in this case.

Hi danielherrero, do you have any 16 GB SDHC Memeory card? if so can you let us know whether it works fine with the Shift, thanks !
Hi folks,
Here are some questions that I haven't seen answered elsewhere. Very interested to know the following. Would prefer someone who has actually tested on a real X1, as opposed to what *should theoretically* work:
1. Does the supplied headset allow volume and music track control?
2. Does the standard 3.5mm port allow a wired headset which has additional volume and music track controls?
3. Can volume and music tracks be controlled remotely via a bluetooth headset?
4. Does the RDS radio require the headset to be plugged in to act as an aerial?
5. Can the radio work with a bluetooth headset?
6. Can the radio volume and stations be controlled with a bluetooth headset?
7. Does the phone play audio tracks encoded in AAC+ (in addition to AAC)
8. Has anyone tested my freeware Quicken-compatible personal finance program, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=440922
Best regards,
Malcolm
4. Does the RDS radio require the headset to be plugged in to act as an aerial? - Yes.
1. Does the supplied headset allow volume and music track control?
No. Only one button on it.
1. Does the supplied headset allow volume and music track control?
A:NO, theres just an answering button.
4. Does the RDS radio require the headset to be plugged in to act as an aerial?
A: Yes. The Radio must have a headset plugged in to act as an aerial. It won´t start without it.
Edit: hmm I waited too long with the posting i see..
I have another quick Q for those lucky Xperia owners out there (mine was shipped today from eXpansys!):
When you first received the phone, did you FULLY charge the battery before turning it on once?
The reason I ask is because I know Li-Po batteries like to be fully charged before their first use, however I am puzzled because as soon as I plug the mains into my HTC Uni, the phone boots up.
Just wanted to know the answer to this question to know if I can tear right into the phone after unboxing, or if I have to wait the ungodly wait of 4-5 hours to fully charge the battery before using.
Thanks guys!
And please if some Xperia owner can answer 1 question for me.
Does the Xperia have Smart-Dialing?
Thanks in advance for answering.

If you mean when in the phone app typing 07123 brings up all those who have 07123 in their number, or typing 2783 brings up arte..... then yes.

Put my battery straight in (couldn't wait) however the status showed it to be pretty much fully charged anyway.
3. Bluetooth - Nope. I have a SE DS 980 and it don't do pants!
Will try it with Jetware installed... and then let you know.
4. Yes. Headphones in.. and Radio comes up.
5 & 6
Nope. The headphones have to be in.. to enable radio...
8. No.. because people who have paid 600 odd GBP for one of these things.. really has more money than sense.. so any Financial personal software is wasted on us. We just pee money.. so we don't care...
We love the yanks for screwing the worlds economy!!!

Hi Guys,
Just a really quick question here. I have my telus HTC Touch still... I recently moved down to the states and now how the HTC FUZE. My Touch is still in great shape and I was wondering what your idea's were on how I could go about making it into a PDA with GPS running Tomtom or something like that.
I already have tomtom and what not installed on there (I used it tons when I was up in Canada) I just dont need the phone features really! So if someone could give me some direction on how to permanetly shut off the phone features that would be great. Like I said. I like the thing as a toy still so to have it still be usefull instead of sitting in a drawer would be ideal. Maybe leaving it in the car as a GPS unit or something.
Thanks!
Aaron

I'm thinking more along the lines of having even the buttons remapped so that the phone pad wont pop up. So when you press the call button tom tom is launched or if you press the hang up button another gps program is launched.. that way in order to actually GET to the dial pad I would have to open it up through the programs or something.
Is this even possible? Does anyone know how I would go about doing that?
You could use a program like AEButton plus
I'll try that out. That said.. I've discovered that my touch wont start up the GPS antenna. I left it sitting on the dash of my car as I was driving around. The service with telus is long since done and there was originally a hack on the phone that got it to get a gps signal in about 5 seconds from a cold start. It dialed into some server and bang.. worked perfect.
Now that I have no actual phone service on the phone it CANT dial into that service and there for it wont get a GPS lock. It's weird that the GPS antenna is tied directly to the cell antenna though. Kind of a downer cause now I literally do have a paper weight.
I DO have an external bluetooth antenna I could use but its a serious pain when compared to just being able to start up the phone and have GPS work.
im running the nfsfans rom 1.04 with the 3.41 radio not the newest version 1 back
i baught delorme for like $20 CAD a long time ago werks like a charm and looks and werks waay better on WM than on the computer!!?? weird eh!
I have no service with my telus vogue
all werks good!!
ae button will remap buttons for whatever function you like just dunno if it werks for the vogue......used it for other hardware before.
best of luck in the US from us here in Ontario!!

Yes I know that.. and I use the GPS... But I still have my touch so figured I would turn it into a standalone PDA/GPS unit..... So I have another one for when a friend comes down to visit in florida. Save them some cash on renting a GPS unit from the car rental place... or a second one so I can let a friend borrow it, or just as a back up! Who knows! Two is ALWAYS better then one right?
Got a HTC P3450 that won't respond to anything. Plug in USB, nothing. Plug in charger, nothing. Hard reset, nothing.
Throw in the bin or is resurrection possible?
Can you try to press the power + camera button together?
Do you see a bootloader screen.
If the phone still wont start , it maybe one of these issues.
- Battery totally dead
- Motherboard Issue (Which you are screwed)
- Power button issue.
Ok I tried the power + camera button together and nothing happened.
I have two batteries and neither work. I tried power + camera button together with the unit plugged into the power socket and via USB and that didn't do anything either.
So I guess it's down to a bad motherboard or a power button issue. Although if it was just a power button issue the charge light or something would come on or something yeh?

Get an android phone, under htc, heard that it was better.
Hi Jeremy (nice to have someone to chat with, thanks)
I believe my friend's ELF is a genuine unit, it had pof's SPL 1.11. And a Chinese guy cooked his own rom and named it Guilin2008.02.22. Plus I could dump everything using the "automated backup.bat". Device ID by dsixda also read well.
The problem now is it could not even turn on to white screen or bootloader. I though at least it must have some power response, or else gold card unbricker won't start right?
So you recommend the "android" ..... I haven't study it at all..... though keep to WM, easy WMDC with outlook each..... plus I'm itching to get a bigger screen type, like blackstone, but ouch it's not only big, but expensive too.
Say, ELF's 200Mhz sometimes feel faster than Niki's 400Mhz (my director's unit), and also faster than Blackstone's 528Mhz (my CEO's unit). I think blackstone uses too many 3D ...... if I ever get one, must replace the rom with light versions...
Anyway, learning to cook my own now, only managed to dump, but still don't understand enough to cook.... well keep reading
Hello CX5,
Thanks alot for dropping by XDA, without you, there wont be me, either.
Yeah, I feel that those devices with more processing power, HTC would usually like to cramp lots of useless animations to the device, thus taking up more space and more power and make the phone slower, so you will buy a new set soon.
Talking about your elf, I cant really help, you may have to drop by your closest service centre for a checkup. I am only more technically inclined to software issues, so hopefully, someone with technical knowledge is able to help you with this.
Android is really a good OS, I managed to install it on my ELF recently, just to give a spin on how it works. Its great, good to use and most importantly, open source.
I seen the newspaper recently, and have you heard about that famous MP3 player brand called Creative, those people originated from my hometown, Singapore. They recently lauched a new phone which comes with their own OS or Google Android, and it cost around $120 USD for Telecoms to buy and rebrand themselves.
I clearly see Android being the next OS, and on top of that, Microsoft's Office is teaming up with Nokia, to install Microsoft Office Mobile onto Nokia Symbian phones.
With that,
I wish you all the best for your phone ( A New one, probably )
Jeremy
Thanks again Jeremy
yeah, my friend's send the wrongly_flash ELF to a hwardware repair, let you know outcome later.
say, just realized Iolite is 528Mhz, I'm able to get it at RMB 1.8k ~ USD225, was my favorite choice before laying eyes on Blackstone.
hmmmmmm. android good on ELF eh............
ok, study study study...................
Hahaha, you are from China?
I have so many China friends at my country in Singapore.
They do so well in maths and chinese, good talent!
--
To be frank with you, just choose a phone you like, and suit your budget and get it. Its too hard catching what is new as there is something new everyday.
Even for myself, im studying too. So ya, money is quite hard to come sometimes.
Iolite sound great, Blackstone is better.
Blackstone has so many apps available, and they have more support in their community there.
Have you checked out the android phones, htc magic and htc dream?
They are quite cool.
Best Of Luck in Studies,
Jeremy
Hi again
Actually I'm Malaysian, working in HK, often visit to factory in China, while my main customers in Taiwan, finally with little visit to customers in Japan.
Anyway, I still like the Iolite design, but screen is not big enough , while blackstones screen is big and nice, but complaining it can't fit into pocket comfortable. Anyway......
I haven't got a chance to study the android, magic or dream. Too busy working. But will someday.
Yes, best of luck to studies.
Oh, all the best for your dream phone!

It's only normal for a pocket pc to get warmed up.
Or at least that's what I think.
My device warms up near the bottom when I'm using the network.
Welcome to the world of HTC devices .
For most of us who had an HTC Touch Pro or other earlier devices, we're just happy the HD2 does not get so hot that it stops charging . That was the NORM with devices like the Touch Pro (Herman). If you talked while charging or used the data connection to stream music while charging, a few minutes later the charging would stop because the device would overheat quickly.
So far, with the TMOUS HD2, I have not had any issues with it not charging during my normal use.
The device feeling a little warm on the back should not trouble you, so long as it's not too hot to hold and can continue charging.
Seems some of the Nexus One folks have even worse problems when it comes to heat.
I've noticed then when using Google Maps with the GPS..
It gets hot incredibly fast..
damn hot...
my HD2 becomes unstable after 3-5 mins while using GPS, or when connected to PC and charging. The bottom right side gets hot and it is restarting.
And, as a bonus, some problems after restart:
Phase1: HTC white screen is displayed; Phase2: Windows is loaded; Phase3: Manilla is trying to load... Phase4: The device restarts again.
Then, Hang on HTC white screen.
I'm forced to remove the battery and let it some time (2-3 min) to cool down to be able to use it again.
So, I've spend some money to buy this HD2 equiped with 1GHz processor, GPS antena ... and I'm not able to use it at full capacity. I can say that my old Toshiba G900 is much more stable than this piece of ....
To be able to use it for a long time I've:
-stopped using Manilla.
-stopped using GPS.
-started checking for mails only once a day.
-stopped transfer files between computer and device using ActiveSync and started to use the laptop's card reader.
So, I'm asking myself (and my wife also is asking me ), what did I've get for 500$?

If it's overheating enough to cause it to reboot, etc, I'd venture a guess that one of the heat sinks inside the casing isn't making proper contact anymore. you should be able to do any/all of those activities you listed without it overheating (though it will get warm, that's normal and expected).
I would get it swapped out under warranty, it sounds like you just got a bum unit.

Sell it and get something else. Probably a faulty unit. Mine gets warm, but works fine.
maybe sd
i noticd that if you run apps from your sd card it gets hot faster
I've noticed the heat. I'm wondering if using a case, especially some of the more insulating cases, would hinder proper heat dissapation.
Good question.... I'd like to know myself.

does anyone else have similar experience?... I just wanted to know if this is normal or not?
Again it doesnt really get super hot... barely noticable ...

I think all smart phone have this problem, dont worry
I've noticed this on both my hd2 and also my g1 android phone. Seems like it doesn't happen as much on the hd2 anymore though, for some reason.....
Overheat
Hi people,
Every device that is connected for charging, or using 3G, wifi - Bluetooth gets HOOOT and it's normal.
If you use a Nokia or "iFon" It'll DO the same.
The MAYOR problem with my HTC FUZE was NOT CHARGING WHEN IT COMES HOT. I'll get the HTC HD2 T9193 soon and I hope it doesn't have this issue
Hope this help your question dude...
My HD2 worked perfectly for few months now, few days ago it started being unstable, restarting and freezing during restarting, and i noticed it's caused by overheat, i cannot use GPS now without it going off and restarts, i used to love my HD2, but now i am sure it's crap, and I am sure HTC, does not care, i was wondering if such a problem ever occurred with any iphone? even that i hate iphone and it's system
Can this be a Battery problem? that the battery can not provide the required current when it's heated?
ok, i did these two experiments
1- i heated the battery alone on a air heater to almost 45 degree
and cooled the phone, but the phone did boot up normally
2- i heated the phone on the heater and cooled the battery, the phone didn't bootup
so the problem is defiantly with the phone not the battery :-(
Well my phone heats up to the point where it stops charging at times, when its connected through Wi-Fi and charging at the same time.
