Question - Disable Phone and have the touch be JUST a GPS/PDA? - Touch CDMA General

Hi Guys,
Just a really quick question here. I have my telus HTC Touch still... I recently moved down to the states and now how the HTC FUZE. My Touch is still in great shape and I was wondering what your idea's were on how I could go about making it into a PDA with GPS running Tomtom or something like that.
I already have tomtom and what not installed on there (I used it tons when I was up in Canada) I just dont need the phone features really! So if someone could give me some direction on how to permanetly shut off the phone features that would be great. Like I said. I like the thing as a toy still so to have it still be usefull instead of sitting in a drawer would be ideal. Maybe leaving it in the car as a GPS unit or something.
Thanks!
Aaron

Just disable the phone, turn on airplane mode.

I'm thinking more along the lines of having even the buttons remapped so that the phone pad wont pop up. So when you press the call button tom tom is launched or if you press the hang up button another gps program is launched.. that way in order to actually GET to the dial pad I would have to open it up through the programs or something.
Is this even possible? Does anyone know how I would go about doing that?

You could use a program like AEButton plus

I'll try that out. That said.. I've discovered that my touch wont start up the GPS antenna. I left it sitting on the dash of my car as I was driving around. The service with telus is long since done and there was originally a hack on the phone that got it to get a gps signal in about 5 seconds from a cold start. It dialed into some server and bang.. worked perfect.
Now that I have no actual phone service on the phone it CANT dial into that service and there for it wont get a GPS lock. It's weird that the GPS antenna is tied directly to the cell antenna though. Kind of a downer cause now I literally do have a paper weight.
I DO have an external bluetooth antenna I could use but its a serious pain when compared to just being able to start up the phone and have GPS work.

im running the nfsfans rom 1.04 with the 3.41 radio not the newest version 1 back
i baught delorme for like $20 CAD a long time ago werks like a charm and looks and werks waay better on WM than on the computer!!?? weird eh!
I have no service with my telus vogue
all werks good!!
ae button will remap buttons for whatever function you like just dunno if it werks for the vogue......used it for other hardware before.
best of luck in the US from us here in Ontario!!

The Fuse already has a GPS & can run TomTom.

Yes I know that.. and I use the GPS... But I still have my touch so figured I would turn it into a standalone PDA/GPS unit..... So I have another one for when a friend comes down to visit in florida. Save them some cash on renting a GPS unit from the car rental place... or a second one so I can let a friend borrow it, or just as a back up! Who knows! Two is ALWAYS better then one right?

Switch off Universal

Hi guys,
This may be a stupid question but here goes....
I recently upgraded my father's phone to an XDA Exec from a Nokia 9500 and everything seems fine but I'm having two small problems...
1) There doesn't seem to be a way of actually switching off the phone like you can on the HTC wizard ot Tytn... is there a reason for this and is there a patch I can install that will remove the screen dim function and replace it with a real off button?
2) I have installed MS Voice Command 1.5v but there seem to be problems with it, it wont call contacts or even display them on the screen, I dont really fancy paying another $40 for it so is there a bug fix for this or is it literally a case of biting the bullet and ordering the latest version?
Thanks a lot guys, this site is Fab!!

Some utilities may have shutdown commands, or you can remove and reinsert the battery; the device won't restart until you press the power button.

That version is known not to work under WM5. The current version, 1.6, works fine, so you may want to upgrade. Cheers,

Rebuilt Wizard - now worse than before!

I desparately need help! I finally got fed up missing calls because my MDA Vario wasn't ringing or because it crashed when I tried to answer. I've had a problem for a while, in that after a day or two it will mysteriously stop making any noises. No menu clicks, no voice directions in TomTom, no notification sounds and worst of all, no ringing when a call comes in. The only fixes are to reboot or to go into Sounds & Notifications in Settings, go to the Notifications tab and then change the volume up or down! It's then fine for another day or two.
I finally got fed up and did a hard reset last week, put my data back on through ActiveSync and then reinstalled the following:
Opera
TomTom 5.21
Total Commander
SmartsKey
Omapclock
I set SmartsKey to overclock to 240mhz and used Total Commander to edit the registry and switch on caps indicator, enable the various caches as suggested in in the wiki, and to set GPRS to always on (as I'm on unlimited data). No other changes, no other software. I did install the trial of SPB Mobile Shell, but then removed it because I didn't like it. I'm on the standard T-Mobile firmware, ROM 2.21.2.6 WWE and I've not unlocked it at all.
The phone worked like a dream for a week or so after the hard reset, but now it's started doing the same thing with the sounds again! Furthermore, if I'm using TomTom it doesn't override the power save settings - so it turns off the backlight after 2 minutes and then turns off the phone after 5! It didn't do this before!
PLEASE can anyone help before I throw the thing out of the window and buy a Symbian smartphone!?
Thanks in advance,
Tim
Can nobody help?
Nobody have any ideas? Am I really the only one with this problem!?
Tim

Did you thik it maybe hardware not software!!!! Maybe your phones has a fault that comes and goes. I would take it into the shop to see if has a fault!
Can I suggest that you start with the basics. Do a hard reset but reset it before the extended ROM can install. (If you don't have a stock operator ROM installed nows a good time to do it). Don't install any software at all. It might sound a bit boring but it is important to establish if you have a hard ware or software fault.
Now run the fone for a few days and see if the problem returns. If it doesn't start to add your apps one at a time until you find which is the culprit. If it fails to work with the basic stock ROM you most likely have a hardward problem.
Going for repair
Thanks for the replies, all. As the phone is a year old in June and will therefore be out of warranty I spent 45 minutes this lunchtime on the phone to T-Mobile to get it sent for repair! They were fine about it, just deeply inefficient. Anyway, a prepaid bag is on it's way for me to send back. Any ideas if they will try to repair or just swap it out with another one? I imagine a fault like this which might be software or hardware and which only manifests itself after a few days will be more trouble to fix than it's worth? Anyone had any experience of getting one repaired?
Thanks again,
Tim
yeah, I had been p[laying about with roms for a few weeks and after what I think may be water damage or a drunken drop, my screen stopped working.
Take into account it was christmas time but still I received a brand new phone but had the old battery cover haha. They replaced the stylus too. My old phone was battered and screen was scratched so I was totally happy with the 3 week wait.
No questions asked although I did return my rom to exactly the one it came with, i was unable to re cid lock it.
Overall give T-mob time and it seems they replace phones ok
i did take mine into a t-mobile shop so don't know if that makes a difference (time etc) and was not covered by t-mobile insurance but my bank account has free phone insurance as back up
Hope that was of some help

Why cant we take the lock device on wake off one phone and place on another?

Ok excuse e but i dont know the first thing about this stuff but you guys do some crazy things with these phones I would think you could take the device lock features off of say a treo 700w where the phone locks on suspend and locks the screen during a call and put it on a mogul/titan/ppc6800/any other phone. And YES i know there are to "devicelock" apps and slide2unock but niether work as well as the one built into the treo i had. i like the titan much better but cant san getting off the phone and having the digital clock changed to anolog and all kinds of crap open. I would try to conquer this myself but i havent the faintest clue as where to even start. thanks even just an explanation as to why this wouldnt work would be great

I'm sorry but punctuation and paragraphs works wonders...
Device locking is but something we all have are particular preference to. I use S2U and I still find it to be one of the best things to hit my phone. Some people still like to hit "Device Lock" and unlock it the usual way. Other's might like using the password feature of WM.
So if you ask me, not many people would want to use the screen locking features of the Treo because maybe it doesn't appeal to them as just turning off the phone and having itself lock down anyway since its in hibernate. If it wasn't made, then it hasn't crossed a software developers mind yet to use it applicably.
This is the only explanation I can give you really, since after the clock's explanation in your post didn't make sense to me grammatically...
If you have the problem that I also had, that you open all kind of apps while phoning. the solution is very simple:
after picking up the call push the power button. the call will remain but the screen and all buttons are swiched off
paragraph schmaragraph im not an english major nor anything even close. you obviously understood so i dont see the need. But thank you for the input. and thanks for the turning the screen off idea i think i will try it.

A Problem with WiFi in the Titan, Please help me!

Hello everyone, well, I will explain my problem, The Wifi in my Titan used to work great, but as it is a little old, it have some hardware problems, actually the answer green button doesn't works, but I have no problem with it, the real problem is that the Wifi switch don't want to work anymore, I now it because after some days after it happened, I open the phone, turn it on, and try the switch, it only worked with a very big preassure, but now, after some days, it's fully dead, I have allready tried using the 10 Buttons Comm Manager, but when I click the Wifi won't work, there appears the dildo-like image in the top of the screen but only about 2 seconds, and then it just go and the Wifi is still of, so I'm asking for your help, what can I do? Thanks in advanced.
Ah, I was forgetting to tell you that here in Mexico there are no service for any HTC because it is not usual to see here one of these excelent phones.
You won't get wifi to work if the switch is broken in the off position. Your only option is to get a new one.
My wifi used to work great until I upgraded the phone to the MR2 update. When it restarted, it would do exactly as yours. I would turn the switch on and it would keep the wireless icon in the top of the screen with no connection to a wireless network. I tried to go back to MR1 update but to no avail. I took the phone to Verizon and they told me the wifi chip must have burned outduring the upgrade and that it was not their problem and would not replace the phone. I had to go through insurance and pay $50 to get another phone.

Same problem here. It seems to be more then just coincidence here. It cannot be that so many people are having the same problem at almost the same time experiencing the same symptoms.
We need to find out what is in common between all of us in order to find the solution.
I have searched in the past, with no luck, for instructions on how to dis-assemble the Mogul. Maybe the hardware switch can be replaced? (assuming you have the stomach for such things)

Disregard wrong post.
Well, finally after some research, without any results, I decided to work my self, so I disasembly the back of my Titan, rid of the useless swtich and build a bridge with a copper wire from the terminals and now it works perfectly!!
Of course the problem is that is it too dangerous and to be honest I don't recommend to do this, but if you try it, you will have to be prepared with a 10 buttons comm manager, because with every reboot, the wifi wil be turned on, I know that this is not a good solution, but here in Mexico there are not service for HTC.

What could I do with this phone without a carrier?

Well... I recently changed carriers (from Bell to Rogers) and with the change I've upgraded to the HTC Magic. What I'm wondering is what to do with the old phone.
Hopefully someone here has some great creative idea.. other than giving it away or using it as a dedicated mp3 player or the like.
PS This ironically is my first post in this forum. Truly, from trolling these forums for over a year, my old phone went from kinda neat (stock) to being fully usable (NFSFAN's roms come to mind) to "look what i can do!" (android) all on the shoulders of your hard work. You all don't get enough credit so I just wanna say thanks to everyone here who kept this phone kick a$$ while I was using it. You guys rock!

second that. iGo 08 windows mobile, works fine without data.
I use my xv6700 as a permanent GPS with a bluetooth receiver. Can't wait for my NE2 at the end of the month. The 6900 will go on the dash and that means no more bluetooth connecting everytime I want GPS!
I 3rd the iGo as GPS.
When I start using the Vogue does anyone know a way to get the GPS to automatically connect, and iGo to initiate, say once my car starts? It's connected through my dash to a cigarette adapter splitter, which powers on when my car starts. So is there a program that will launch iGo on USB power? (Does iGo automatically configure the internal GPS itself?) And then when the power shuts off it would turn off the unit.
I guess I could leave the battery out, and maybe boot the whole unit everytime, and have iGo run at startup... but I think for trips it would be best just to leave the battery in and hold the GPS position for quick stops, so i wouldn't have to reroute if I turn the car off.
But then on my daily commute the Vogues battery's going to drain to zero after I park my car and then charge practically everytime i run the car... lowering my gas mileage and running my alternator extra... not that all the stuff i have plugged in doesnt do that already.
Of course, this is assuming im going to be lazy and never want to press a power button or close on the screen
my vogue auto-powers on when it receives power from the USB port, so if I shut it off after turning off the car, it will turn itself on when i restart the car. If I put the gps launcher that I used for iGo into the windows startup, it would've always brought me directly to the GPS screen.
Is it just my vogue that does this? I cannot turn it off when connected to USB power, it will just reboot instead.
EDIT: On my dedicated GPS unit, it automatically turns off if I disconnect power, with a warning box that pops up asking if I want to cancel... I suppose that could be written pretty easily...
just my .02 but you could always dl ppod app and pretend its an ipod! Nah, GPS is a better use. BTW i prefer tomtom 7.45
