Switch off Universal - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi guys,
This may be a stupid question but here goes....
I recently upgraded my father's phone to an XDA Exec from a Nokia 9500 and everything seems fine but I'm having two small problems...
1) There doesn't seem to be a way of actually switching off the phone like you can on the HTC wizard ot Tytn... is there a reason for this and is there a patch I can install that will remove the screen dim function and replace it with a real off button?
2) I have installed MS Voice Command 1.5v but there seem to be problems with it, it wont call contacts or even display them on the screen, I dont really fancy paying another $40 for it so is there a bug fix for this or is it literally a case of biting the bullet and ordering the latest version?
Thanks a lot guys, this site is Fab!!

Some utilities may have shutdown commands, or you can remove and reinsert the battery; the device won't restart until you press the power button.

That version is known not to work under WM5. The current version, 1.6, works fine, so you may want to upgrade. Cheers,

Just got a XDA Exec, New to this need help info

Hi all
I am new to this board and new to the xda,, I have just bought a XDA Exec (guess i am in the right place, this is the same as the "universal"?)
GOt it from ebay, boxed as new for £265 which i did not think was a bad price.
I mainly wanted it as I want to be able to use msn messager on the go, plus email and intranet access via work, plus I like the idea of putting my music on to it aswell..
As I am new to this I would appicate all the help you guys can give me.
A,,, Which ROM is the best to use (where can i download, how do i update)
B,,, What software is recommended for use
C,,, I am going to be using it as a mobile phone as well, can you use it like a normal one (IE hold to side of your head while shut and speak like you would on a normal phone)
D,,, ANy Hints tips or tricks would be greatfully received,
Thanks very much in advance.

Do you have a problem with the O2 ROM that it (presumably) already has? The O2 ROM seems to be pretty stable and reliable. Certainly works for me. If it ain't broke....

Absolutely. You can have the screen facing out or in: the Exec has two different speakers in the screen shell for this reason. You have another two in the base for the speakerphone. The microphone is near the power button. One tip: Don't flip the screen from landscape to portrait (or vice-versa) when the phone rings. Leave it in its current orientation and answer it. If it's closed in clamshell mode and the phone rings, open the screen to see who's calling, but close it again to answer. Don't flip to portrait mode just to answer it cos you'll probably lose the call as the OS takes a second or two to flip the screen orientation.
Browse this forum for a while. You'll find lots of tips and tricks to improve your experience with your Exec. Disabling the O2 Active interface, turning off Error Reporting, and Incoming Beams are the first, most basic things you can do to improve things for yourself.

P3600 buttons not working anymore

Hi!
Since yesterday my ok, windows, on and off hook and -- buttons aren't working anymore. The button in the middle and the cursor are still ok. Any ideas?
Due to the fact that the "--" (left and right) are not working I can't even do a hard reset.

Hope this helps

Hi all,
OK I did a hard reset but it didn't work. Still no go :-(
The black coating is also peeling off. What a nice device.
mine just packed up too
more and more bugs are showing up every day passes... I somehow knew It would happen.. I don't think I'll take the risk of buying a p3600 through import without warranty after reading all these problems..
Good luck man
Trinity working well ..

While I dare not say my Trinity will be problem free, so far it has served me well. Everything is working as it should and the internal GPS has been enabled without a single problem. I'm on the test ROM (AKU3.3) and so far the performance is much better than my old Dopod 838 Pro (Hermes).
So far I have been very impressed with HTC built devices. A friend of mine's Dopod 838pro (Hermes) went into the pool accidentally, and it refuse to boot. After 3 days of intensive 'drying' it finally came back to life and it is working problem free until now.

Hehe, good to hear that....
I'm personally considering the hermes (TYTN) myself, because it's available here with warranty.. I hope the new ROM with AKU3.3 will improve it..

My personal advise to you would be to test the 3G call on that device before you buy it. The only advantage the Tytn has over Trinity is:
1) Flash light & Macro Picture
2) Keyboard
3) Additional hard button (Messaging, IE, 3G call)

The main reason I'm considering it is that i can buy it from here in israel with warranty, I don't wanna risk buying the trinity abroad.
I don't really care about 3G calls, I never use it, but 3G internet speeds aren't bad
the keyboard seems a big advantage over the trinity. The main advantage of the trinity is the small and pocket form factor, but unfortunately I can have it only by importing it

ok cheers, if it's any help they have repaired mine twice for this issue. Originally it went in for the peeling paint, but while they had it the buttons failed the test so were replaced. Then when they bodged the repair and it went back again, again the buttons failed the test and they replaced again.
Then when I get the phone back...the buttons don't work! Incidently before they started repairing the phone I never had a problem with the buttons
Hi!
I know that this thread is quite old but I prefer to post in this thread rather than opening a new one (sorry if I am not doing well but I am new at the community )
Yesterday I was working on a P3600 and suddenly all buttons stop working. The irDA also did not work. I have left the phone all the night without the battery (I really don't know what I was trying to achieve ), and this morning the buttons (and the irDa) did not work yet. Now, after a hard reset, it seems that all is working as it should.
My questions are, why after a hard reset? (it seems to point out a software issue); is this problem related to the touch screen problem I've been reading about in the forum? (perhaps the cause is the same); and finally, is it likely to appear again?
Thanks in advance
ROM version: 1.15.412.2 10/23/06 (original one)
Radio version: 1.20.00.11
ExtROM version: 1.15.412.101
My D-pad select, down, right and OK have been getting steadily worse requiring more pressure to use. Mine isn't software related. Just sent it back today asking for the black peeling issue to be repaired as well.
I held out as long as I could hoping that any issues had been resolved by HTC. I'll post when I get it back.

You will probably have to get return authorization through your retailer.
It's been about 2-1/2 weeks and no word from HTC. I emailed them today. I will be sure to post when I get it back regarding GPS Rom and peeling.
Just got it back - all pretty again. They replaced the bezel and switch board. Still has old rom but I am happy.

I've had the exact same thing happen twice now. Everything is going along fine and then suddenly all the keys stop working until I do a hard reset. The touch screen keeps going as normal. I haven't tested the IRDA but it appears that USB and active sync don't want to go either. A hard reset solves the problem but then I have to reinstall things which is annoying.
There must be other people out there with this problem. Has anyone come up with a solution?
I don't think, that there will be a fix...seems like a hardware problem to me.
I have nearly the same....the red and the green call buttons don't work properly!
For me they work immediately after a soft reset and then stop again within about 30 seconds. Hardware or software? it would appear to be software but I had the same issue using the official T-Mobile WM5 and still umder Black Satin WM6.....
think I'll flash back to official ROM and take it into the shop tomorrow!

Problems so far...

I have been having teh following problems with my X1 and just spoken to O2, have arranged an exchange. I could probably do some reset on it and sort the problem, but since I am still withint the 28 days period, why the hassle?
- Phone loves turning itself off, not the screen, but the phone itself.
- Passcode playing trick, half of the time even I entre the correct code, it won't unlock my phone, and says wrong passcode.
- Installed apps can't be found even the successfully installed message shows up.
- none of the games I have installed works or else won't work to the full screen.
- Google Mail won't work after installed from the Google website.
Anyone eles have the same problems? Or is it just me?
as of now maybe just you mate, maybe something you have installed. maybe try to hard reset just to find out and if nothing happens then exchange it. it's worth the try mate and tell us what happens.
My Xperia has a faulty headphones socket I returned it to where I got it from, then they sent me another one. And guess what that had a faulty headphone socket as well.
When the headphones are inserted nothing happens. Also the headphone icon does not appear.
Any Ideas ??
A hard reset is a good idea, or I might have to wait forever for the phone to arrive, always out of stock... what is SE playing at?
I have tried hard reset and it dosent work
It seems to me that the X1 has so many little problems as I have heard / seen, this si my first WM phone, so can't compare... nearly sold my X1 for an iphone (I am a Mac user), but no, not worse the money.
maybe xperia phones are selling well, lol.
go for the hard reset mate.

maybe its the same phone, lol
if not return it to them again and ask them to check the unit in front of you

hard reset won't solve the problem of your headphone problem mate, its a different problem
If you have problems with your X1s either
A) take them back to your supplier,
B) use the SE X1 support (theres a little silver card in with all the documents).
If the device is turning off (completely) then it's a hardware fault, have you checked the power settings?
funny enough, I had exactuly the same problem (phone turning itslef off) with my SE W960, sent it in for repair, nothing was found... I bet it would be the same this time, maybe I just don't have those so called "technician hands" I work in technical support and very often with the head technician touches certain things, they work!)
I have checked the power setting, nothing is wrong, just weird... maybe I am just unlucky.
Like other replies suggested, a hardware reset would probably do the job, but since I am still within the 14 or 28 days period, I would rather not take the risk of having the same problem again o day 29 where I would have to send it in for repair than having a new handset...
My biggest gripe with this phone is the double tap/ click bug or feature.
It appears that even while the screen is on and the back light is off, when you tap the screen it turns on the backlight and then you have to tap again to perform an action.
1 - never had that problem
2 - never had that one either
3 - Sometimes it does that, but it's the app's fault, not the phone's.
4 - Games are working fine if you install the "arm" ones adn the ones that are for ppc. The resolution is not a problem of the phone. It's just that the phone is new and not many game manufacturers support it. Yet.
5 - Idon't use Gmail sorry

Hmmm... you don't need to download the google app at all, that's for older, slower, low-mem devices.
I use google all the time
1- Open gmail's web page in Opera browser
2- Set up your gmail account in Mesages, it is autoamted and works a treat !!!
IN CONCLUSION: I think your phone is OK. Mine never turns off, never freezes, never hangs up
I've had the diamond, tytn etc and let me tell you this phone is far more reliable than those previous devices...
Don't blame the phone, blame some app or tweak you have done
May I suggest you to hard-reset the phone and start installing your apps, mods and tewaks one by one until you find the faulty one
Remember: this is not a simple "phone": ithis is a computer with Windows.
You wouldn't be blaming Dell if your PC becomes unstable after adding some programs/apps/games that are not suitable for your, let's say, video graphics card as an example
I have somewhat of a problem with mine 2.. It doesn´t seem to play any of my mp3´s that i put on it,but wma files work just fine.. Strangely it plays the mp3´s that were on it when i bought it.. Any idea what the problem might be??
Well, I have changed the setting abot teh power, still happening, nevermind, a replacement is coming tomorrow, so I guess I will just start fresh again. What do they do with these faulty phones? Do the fix them and sell the as reconditioned at a lower price or sth? How about those unwanted return? Just a matter of interest.

universal going crazy on me! keeps dialling and doing weird things!

Hi, recently my SPV M5000 has been really acting weird. it was fine using WM5 official rom, then i upgraded it to luca's wm6.1 rom, and it was still fine. then a month or two later it started behaving weird. in apps such as word, typing on the keyboard brings up the phone app, and when left alone it suddenly starts dialling numbers (the last number dialled)
i flashed it to tomal's 6.1 rom, and its still doing the same thing!! i'm at my wits end right now. could it be the bootloader or something? im using v2.06. i cant remember if i upgraded to it or if my device came with it.
thanks in advance
Try Doc format and reflash ROM
thanks for the reply, i just tried it but it dosent work
after checking it out some more, i realised most of the keys work fine, however its the h,n,j and u keys that are causing it to launch the phone app. Im not sure why it keeps trying to dial the last dialled number all by itself. i have to cancel it maybe 10 times before it stops trying.
the green "call" button on the spine of the phone also dosent work
could this be a hardware issue?
If if you tried the doc format and flashed other roms and the issue is still there it might be hardware problem...
and one thing just after flashing to new rom don't back up anything and see if the problem is still there.. if no then this bight be due to some applications in backup....
cheers
Rajiv...
sounds like hardware. you may have a sticky key. I'd take it to bits, give it a good clean and make sure the connectors are firmly pressed in - as concerns the spine keys and keyboard.
no, its not a sticky key. i guess its a loose/frayed connector
i'm reluctant to disassemble because of the form factor. guess i'll have to mothball it until i can get it repaired. i dont use it much anymore anyway, have since upgraded to a HD, but my girlfriend was using it as a mini laptop for word and skype when she didnt want to lug her laptop to college.
thanks anyway for the help
Is the screen intact? Is it clean around the edges? Did she spill coffee (cola?any drink?) on it? Is there any dirt around the screen where it meets the frame? Has it got a new screen protector installed recently?
Sounds like your hinge PCB got wet and is shorting.

[Q] "Mobile of the year '09" bull****

I just got my HD2 back from repairs after 1 month now, I had the problem where the phone freezes up when I recieve calls. This got fixed, and I have not noticed any of the symtoms I had earlier. But now...
1. The FM-Radio does not work.
2. When I connect my phone to my computer, my computer sais: "One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. for assistance in solving this problem, click this message." And just connect - disconnect - connect - disconnect.
3. When I turn on my cellphone, I get a warning: BTTrayCE er ikke et gyldig Pocket Pc-program. (BTTrayCE is not a valid Pocket PC-program in English)
It just kills me that the phone that actually won the "Mobile of the year '09" by Amobil.no, sucks more than the Iphone.
Should I just send my phone back to repairs again, or do you guys have any idea how to fix this without using another month in repairs?

First off, I'm sorry to see that your phone is having these issues. Mine has worked like a charm ever since I installed the first custom ROM.
Now my question; have you HSPL'ed your phone yet?
You could try installing another (custom) ROM and a newer radio version to see if it helps.. It might aswell fix your problems.

I did use HSPL before I sent my phone to repairs, but it did not fix any problems, therefore I do not believe in HSPL'ing anymore.. I did not notice any difference at all, after installing a custom rom, or radio..
I see.. Have you tried Task29 yet? (Formatting it completely)
And then installing the latest Radio + a custom rom? (Before trying this, be SURE you have HSPL'ed it!)
If you've already tried that, I think the only thing you'd be able to do is to get a huge stone (or your HD2 itself), put a note on it saying 'It still does not work properly', and throwing it through the window of any HTC office in your country .
Or just open a ticket/calling them saying it still doesn't work and that you demand a replacement/new phone, as how it is now it's kinda an expensive brick.

Do HTC even bother about their customers? Doesn't seem so, seeing that if the cellphone should have any problems of this sort, they say you will get a new phone. But rather getting a new phone, I got the old one back, in worse condition than before.
Also, I wonder if they can check my problems? Because we have a law in Norway, if the same problem occours after 3 times repaired, you can either get a new phone or money back (same with all other electronics). So could I just lie and say I have the same problem + the new problems? **** the ethics ..

Task29 isn't that risky.. Just run HSPL again and get that done, then run the packed exe as found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644781. As long as you press the VolDown button when it restarts, you will be totally fine. However in your case, I'd indeed not expect much improvement, as it really seems to be a hardware problem.

I think it is all the same with those big corporations. One customer, who cares? As long as their phones sell, why would they bother? Same story all over again.
I'd go for the three strikes = new phone way. However, it does suck to have your phone taken away from you for another month or so..
sorry mate..mine works like a charm since day one must be just u it still is the best phone
lmao it has some disadvantages (like tft screen,no tv out/hdmi out/crap loudspeaker) but lmao its still better than most phones out there

Guess what, it is the lastest stock, I just checked it.. Norwegian atleast, and I don't bother using other languages (even English). Just posted a ticket on HTC.com/no, and then I will send it to repairs again, and again, and then I'm changing to a Samsung Galaxy S..
I've heard Samsung support is even worse than HTC..
But indeed, the Galaxy S does have features that our phone lacks.. Still, I think the HD2 looks more sexy.

The HD2 looks way better, I do agree. But my brother bought himself a samsung galaxy s, and he's going to start making games and apps, so he could teach me a little bit, and if I have problems, I could go to him rather than sending it to repairs, (not all problems are easily solved on the intarwebz) and then I'd get rid of Windows Mobile..

I had the same issue too. TomTom replaces two BT files (Your bluetooth should not work by now) so the BT application can not start up properly. THIS fixes at least this problem (Use Resco Explorer or TotalCommander and unhide system files).
I hope you'll find help for your other issues, too.

Well, instead of buying a licence, you hack it, using a keygen of some sort :S Didn't quite get what I did, but I used CMD to open a keygen and create a file :S Was weird, but hey, I did it... After 2 hours of trying
Easy when you know how, but im sure its not something that should be discussed on the forums. (WTB TomTom for sale from the australian site, as i feel its worth the cash)
anyway, darkkoushirou is correct regarding TomTom + Bluetooth.
I found it easier to install it to the SD card then factory reset. Once thats done i used total commander to simply copy a link back into your start menu.
Now that my custom ROM has XDA_UC i have set it to auto-copy the link back to my start menu after each rom upgrade
I know that when i got the handset i was trying many different apps, some of which caused issues. Once you get an idea of the ones you need, doing a factory reset is recommended. Then only install the 'good' ones.
