Htc droid eris section - Android Software Development

Mods can we please get a HTC Droid Eris Section up and running. I am currently in love with this phone!

Already proposed this. From what I hear it is waiting on admin approval and creation.

They are probally waiting for it to have full root access, but in the meantime tips/tricks and general knowledge can be thrown into the forum.

No, most of the time HTC phones get on here before they get root. It is a common misconception that the HTC Droid Eris is a re-branded Hero, so that is probably why it doesn't have its own section yet. The hardware is identical to the Hero, but the operating system is an updated and patched version of Android 1.5. This is why the Hero rooting methods do not work on the Eris. I'm willing to bet that the device is not actually the Hero, but the long lost HTC Desire because the bootloader says DESIRE.

What ever it is, I love my device after turning off all wireless/wifi/bluetooth/mobile network always on. I had 56 hours of uptime no charging/syncing and a total of 5 hours of use absolutely the longest ive had for a phone!

This would make good sense since ERIS is the last 4 letters of DESIRE backwards. Good thought!

HTC Desire forum added at the bottom.

As soon as i post a tutorial on battery life and increasing it, The forum dissapears!

Rooting Droid Eris

I know it's just a Sprint Hero, so maybe someone has figured out how to root the Eris. I've got one coming in the mail on Monday and would like to figure this out.
I was wondering if you have found out any more info on rooting the eris, i love my new phone but some of the stock apps need to go....
Nothing yet. I know there is a thread for rooting the Sprint Hero, and this is (from what I've read) just a redesign for Verizon... As I'm used to the rooted G1, I'm hoping that this is an easy process.
has anyone tried rooting it with the current method for the Sprint Hero?
I tried with all the methods i could find on the sprint hero with no luck. but i have also never rooted a phone before so i may have done something wrong but i am pretty sure i did everything right and was still not able to get it done. I am really looking forward to though...
The Eris is currently in the same boat as the Cellular South phones (which even look identical to the Sprint phones)...the vulnerability that we used in the sprint phones was patched and so you guys are stuck waiting for the new method. >.<

Hopefully, given the fact that many would be Droid buyers are opting for the Eris for the slicker interface and lower price, there will be enough of these on the streets that someone with the knowledge will want to figure it out.
Eris is awesome! but yes @chicojd it needs to be rooted!
newbie question
Since my N770 expired with the BSOD I've been looking for something to use as a small tablet. This morning I saw a Droid Eris on sale. When this gets rooted will it 802.11g capable without registration? Thanks.
soywalker
Are you aware that there is a separate forum for the Eris now?
You will probably have better luck there!

Dave

Why is the Incredible the last to get any Froyo Love??

Showing my Newbness: What is the biggest hurdle to building froyo from source for the Incredible? How do HTC phones that came out at the same time and later have Froyo roms already and we have nothing? I don't get it. I started reading the developer guide to try and set my own kitchen up and get an understanding of how this works. Can anyone enlighten me as to how the Evo, Desire, Nokia, Atari 2600 and Nintendo DS (Last 2 are jokes) have froyo builds and we have nada??

Not many dev's have our phone plus it was the last one rooted as well. It sucks but it'll come eventually.
I thought the Evo was the last. I guess I can understand the phone shortage. Thanks for the fast reply!
The EVO was immediately rooted and is FAR easier to root as well. We are the new kid.
The EVO was rooted before it was even released, due to the unrevoked1 team.
I helped a friend downgrade her moto, root it and upgrade to Froyo. Then she smoked me in the benchmarks.... This wait is painful!
Ok. Done whining now.
I tried to port the Froyo rom for the desire over, using the newb kitchen, it just caused a boot loop. I did a logcat and it seemed like it couldn't create any folders in the /data partition for some reason. Thank goodness for nandroid.
I guess that's why I'm a Network Engineer and a 39yr old college student, instead of a developer.

but in real life usage, not some benchmark, how did the moto feel speed wise...
personally i went from a moto to an incredible (back when the inc first came out) and even though I had my moto at 1.2ghz, the inc felt way smoother.
course I have yet to see froyo on a moto... i have one sitting in my desk drawer up at work, might should try throwing froyo on it just to see I guess...

Dude! I gave her the kernel to put it back at its native speed of 800MHz (didn't want it getting hot on her) and that thing was fluent. The JIT compiler is UNREAL!! Have you seen the video where the Nexus smokes the Evo and Droid X, because it was running Froyo? That, and this [email protected] coffee, is why I'm so antsy about it!
I bought an Eris with the promise that I it would be updated to 2.1 from 1.5 within two weeks. Needless to say, I did not get the update for five months. So, I'm not holding my breath for Froyo to land on our phones anytime soon. Even when HTC completes the build for our phone, Verizon will take forever hacking it up so it works the way they want. For instance, I'm really sure they will leave that tethering option intact for us to use for free.
I wish I knew enough to compile it from source for us. I've compiled my own linux kernels before, but its easy to compile them for the machine you're working on. Compiling for HTC proprietary hardware is out of my league.
*sigh* I'll just have to be patient.
Welp
I have to believe that the rom developers are not sitting around waiting until the Xth request for FroYo comes in ... just so they can gauge demand
It will happen when it happens ... trust me, I am dying for FroYo --- I need bluetooth to trigger voice dial.
I didn't realize there was a kitchen for Android.

I wasn't requesting it. I asked why every other device has it already; even one that was released after the incredible. And what was the big hurdle.

magic getting 2.2.1

i am outraged, i just saw on phandroid that the htc magic was getting 2.2.1 (without live wallpapers, wifi hotspot or flash player) so why is our hero not getting it? its more or less the same specification, just with sense, and we have already seen 2.1 with sense, so why are hTc not giving us hero owners an official froyo update?
Our Hero won't get it because HTC don't want to spend money developing the update, it wouldn't make sense financially to them. It is more or less the same specification with the exception of the Camera and RAM.

but surely they would have chosen our heros instead of the magic seeings as its better?
Also htc would have to develop a 2.2 sense that would work on the hero, which they see as way too much work. Face it, as far as HTC is concerned, the hero is dead and has. been for some times

Nope, in their eyes the Hero has already been updated (to 2.1 from 1.5) whereas the Magic was on 1.6 I believe, so they were obliged to update it.
what are the chances of porting the magic 2.2.1 to the hero ?
the magic's hardware seems close to the hero.
same screen, same cpu same memory.
afaik it's the predecessor of the hero.
shouldn't that be a great thing for hero rom development ?
Why would you want to port it? There are tons of 2.2.1 roms available for the hero. Remember the magic isn't a sense 2.2, its a generic android 2.2, which as I say is availavailable in abundance on xda and similar sites

Yep the hardware is extremely similar. It might be useful for Hero development, I think the developer's could use the drivers to optimize perhaps, but that's about it really.

DHD rom development-what's going on?

Hey guys,what's up?
Well,as most(if not all) of you,I am enjoying this wonderful phone for almost a week now. However I've been watching the DHD forums since they started, when I had my Desire and my Hero only. Not that I am unhappy about something and everyone around here is pretty helpful and all,but I thought that such a device would get more attention.Especially 4.3 inchers from HTC(Leo and Evo) are very favoured by developers. For the DHD there are only a few roms and they don't get updated very frequently.
Does anyone know whether it is just too early or if I'll have to stick with it?Maybe it's just that I had the Hero and the Desire when they were all the rage and am used to that, but I don't think that's the case...
Well, the thread's open for discussion(civilised if possible ) and I'm waiting to here other people's thoughts on the matter!
With kind regards,
Apostolis

I believe it is still a bit early for mass-development.
Dont forget that the device has been in very short supply since its introduction.
Cheers
I too agree. Shortages globally may influence the lack of current interest. However, it would not really be interest...more like mass-interest. Developers have done a lot for this phone, there have been many users here making threads, such as the camera threads, battery life threads, and there are many replies and many more views. I believe there have been only a few developers who decided to get the Desire HD. Why? Some may regard the Desire HD as not a big enough reason to ditch the Evos, Desires and HD2s! I'm sure this phone will boost up its demand in XDA soon. Give it a month or two. Another speculation is: this device is almost perfection. What can you do to make it perfect, considering all humans have different views and ideas of perfection? Only making the device "better" is attaining a higher form of perfection or nearing that goal. Therefore, those particular areas in modding can take a while to implement!
I too kinda have the same question..

Well,I too place my bets to the fact that it's early and all.And boy did I like what you said!It is perfect indeed!
It's just that we can get many things more with custom roms. Not only performance-wise,but many functions restricted by HTC.Anyway,I for one would overclock the hell out of it just to see it kick some Sammy Ass!
Shame I'm all talk for now.I have installed the 1.72 OTA(thank god I S-Off'ed my radio before I did) and now I can't root wihtout downgrading and thus deleting all my apps and data. And boy I can't stand the whole process of reinstalling everything from scratch just to have nothing from my data. No,I'll wait some time in case they manage to root the 1.72 OTA.And god I hope they will!

Most probably you're right,in fact all of you must be right now.Pardon my impatience, but I've used the Hero and the Desire on their "time of glory",when they were, like, what everybody wanted and many people developed for them(I know it's not exactly like that but never mind ).Anyway,it must be just too early...Well,time will tell! And I think that time, being a nasty bastard, won't be saying anything about the DHD until the first rumors and leaks about HTC's Gingerbread update start coming out.
Who needs quantity when you can have quality?
We have Cyanogenmod.
I think you've been unlucky? to come to us just after the gingerbread release and the fallow period prior to the Gingerbread based roms

Well, looking at the Desire Z forums makes me feel kinda jealous...
They get more roms, they already got cyanogenmod 7,they got a 2GHz kernel(yeah,I'm such a crazy m0therf^cker I would flash that! ) and so on.I want these things for us too!Plus they would look so much better in 4,3".
What do you guys think?
That was posted in the portal a few days ago in the interview of m-deejay:

Am I the only one excited about this?
maybe you are right and other phones (may) have more development going on.
I do feel that, the dev. that is going on is of very high quality with good working roms being released, tuned & tweaked kernels being released and so on.
I believe that the source code for 1.72 has not been released yet, preventing OC kernels for this.
Root for 1.72 is available through custom roms, including the 1.72 update (like the LeeDrOid rom I am using).
For me the number of roms is ok....I'd be flashing all the time otherwise
i think there is no time for development.. they all enjoy this phone xD like me..
and waiting for 2.3 from htc is more senseful to continue to cook some roms

My goodbyes.

I am sure none of you really know me but I have been around for awhile, first came here with an HTC Touch, loaded up window mobile roms and hacks.
Tested roms here and there for winmo 6.5 and android for the vogue, disappeared after downgrading to a blackberry then I came back when I got my HTC Hero.
I have posted few but learned alot, enough to run a small little gig of phone modifications on top of my freelance computer engineering. I have recently obtained an Evo Shift after my mom used my upgrade so I used my dads. After chopping off sense and enjoying the amazing performance of this 2nd Gen processor I have to say goodbye to this Hero forum and move onto the Shift as my new home.
I will probably be in and our picking up roms for my dad and running to the evo 3D for my mom but that's about it.
Sorry if this is a "who are you" kind of outting, just felt like saying goodbye :] take care.

It's the sense of connection and togetherness that makes our Hero CDMA forums so great. We have such an active and friendly community that rivals other forums. I am still running through these forums looking at what's new, sad thing is we are getting a large amount of new shift owners since bestbuy made it free for upgrade. They are all bugging us about rooting 2.3 which is currently not available but hopefully Revolutionary fixes this so they can stop filling up the sections.

And they think its as simple and safe as jailbreaking. They need to learn about ADB and the other little goodies before rooting, maybe even a little common sense. Too many one click root babies.
