I know it's just a Sprint Hero, so maybe someone has figured out how to root the Eris. I've got one coming in the mail on Monday and would like to figure this out.
I was wondering if you have found out any more info on rooting the eris, i love my new phone but some of the stock apps need to go....
Nothing yet. I know there is a thread for rooting the Sprint Hero, and this is (from what I've read) just a redesign for Verizon... As I'm used to the rooted G1, I'm hoping that this is an easy process.
has anyone tried rooting it with the current method for the Sprint Hero?
I tried with all the methods i could find on the sprint hero with no luck. but i have also never rooted a phone before so i may have done something wrong but i am pretty sure i did everything right and was still not able to get it done. I am really looking forward to though...
The Eris is currently in the same boat as the Cellular South phones (which even look identical to the Sprint phones)...the vulnerability that we used in the sprint phones was patched and so you guys are stuck waiting for the new method. >.<

Hopefully, given the fact that many would be Droid buyers are opting for the Eris for the slicker interface and lower price, there will be enough of these on the streets that someone with the knowledge will want to figure it out.
Eris is awesome! but yes @chicojd it needs to be rooted!
newbie question
Since my N770 expired with the BSOD I've been looking for something to use as a small tablet. This morning I saw a Droid Eris on sale. When this gets rooted will it 802.11g capable without registration? Thanks.

Are you aware that there is a separate forum for the Eris now?
You will probably have better luck there!

Does anyone have one or is it mainly the sprint hero being used here?
I have one and I love it so far.
It will probably mainly be Sprint for a bit since we've had the Hero a while longer but I'm sure more Eris folks will start showing up (Just as there are a few Cell South users around too).
They might all be hovering around their respective "root status" threads.

Yeah I have one and i absolutely love it. I have had the following android phones and I think the Eris is the best... MyTouch 3G, Motorola Cliq, and now the Droid Eris.
love it
hey i got a Moto DROID on release day and ended up returning it a little over a week ago for the Eris.... I miss 2.0 and the the DROID had a little more speed, as well as the flash, and gps nav..... but i wouldnt trade my Eris for a thing....
I love my Eris, loved my G1, and was ehh with the MyTouch3G. The Eris has the best UI but the G1 was great for modding anything on the phone except the carrier (T-Mobile sucks).

I think once we get more familiar with the cdma bits you'll see the hero/eris reach a similar .level of customizability.
I totally agree. Once this phone is rooted it will beat all the other phones I have owned. I do miss Tue physical keyboard but not going to cry over it.
i got one and love it
Best new phone experience yet for a smartphone and just keeps getting better and better.

So I'm reading on Android sites that 2.1 will come to Droid and Eris on Dec. 11th. I know Sprint doesn't have OTA updating for things larger than 10MB sorted out yet so are we screwed? I am really going to be pissed if the Eris gets Sense with 2.1 while Hero's get left with 1.5. Does anyone know if there would be an updater like RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_1.29.651.1_signed_release.exe so that Hero users can install without waiting for some OTA fix? The people at Sprint seem less than competent when it comes to Android stuff so I have no faith. For example, my wife's Hero came with the wrong firmware (version 1.22.651.1 instead of 1.29.651.1) and she couldn't get the OTA bug fix. The Sprint solution was to take it back to Best Buy and do an exchange because, and I quote, "there is no way to update that phone." Well I came home and ran the RUU and it worked perfectly. So much for their tech support.

Well, if it comes down to it I am sure we could get an Eris 2.1 dump and port it over to the Hero but I am sure once released we will get our hands on Hero 2.1. Also, if the Dec 11th date is correct then that is great news. I don't see why HTC wouldnt release Hero 2.1 and Eris 2.1 in tandem. Speculation I hate you. lol
These updates and dumps are NOT coming to us for some reason. I don't there is one person that is going to port a full ROM to the CDMA verision of the Hero. We're just smelly Americans that don't deserve it apparently.

the dev population for the gsm hero is bigger because its been out longer. Not because we are "smelly Americans"

I think that HTC will release it for the Eris and not the Hero because they won't have Sprint's permission to release it. When I was having the firmware issue I described in the OP I talked to HTC first and they admitted they could fix it but since Sprint won't give them the go ahead for any updates they are bound not to release anything. I asked about future updates and he said it would be only with the carriers permission. I know it sounds pessimistic but I can see HTC rolling out the update for Verizon because their OTA is working. Sprint, on the other hand, would be forced to have customers download the update and manually install or have them come in to the service centers. I'm sure they think their customers are too inept for the former and considering the level of competence in their service centers I don't see the latter happening either. If by some miracle they have OTA working I will gladly eat my words but from what I have heard they aren't even close to having a fix.
I don't see why Sprint would make a big issue with the OTA bug or whatever it is. There is no reason why they wouldn't post an update for people to download. That's how it's been done for years with WinMo. And I don't think the average Hero user would even know there is an update. Mostly it would be people like us. And if the average user knows about it, well, it's probably cause one of us told them about it

Ok. First off, Sprint will release an update. It may be more delayed than others but we will get it. That said there are two options. Either A) We get a dump of the HTC official rom before Sprint releases it or B) someone posts an Eris 2.1 rom which we can then mold.

We are not getting any roms made for us because we are 1.5. 1.5 was easy to make roms for on GSM because it had GSM built into it officially from Google. CDMA however was not native until 1.6. Once the 2.1 firmware is released we should be able to more easily port over other roms including Cyanogen and all the others. Also, if there was another 1.5 firmware from HTC we could port it. For instance, the Eris dump we can port. It wouldnt make sense to because its the same as the Hero so we never did. Porting over Moto or LG or Samsung is more difficult because of driver issues.
Look, simply put, we could argue back and forth about this forever but when it comes down to it CDMA Hero will be as good as any other phone out there when the update is released and one way or another we will have the update shortly after HTC releases it.

jeez children... stop your bickering
10mb has to be some fictional number, I've gotten PLENTY of OTA updates in excess of 10mb, specifically one for the pre which was 80 something MB
And before you say something about wifi, I started and finished the d/l at work with no wifi coverage what-so-ever.
This restriction is just a rumor... and a lame one at that. Someone is misinformed, even if a sprint rep is saying that, I would love to talk to him and find out exactly where they THINK the restriction is at.

Knowing that my hopes are always crushed, I can only assume Sprint will drag their feet for the next 2 months getting it to us. We will probably have to rely on those really nice Droid and Eris owners to dump us a Rom that one of the smart devs (this eliminates me) here can do something with.
My opinion, make it yours.
dont you need root to be able to dump a system rom? i dont think the droid or the eris are rooted yet, so how would we get a dump? just asking.
Well everyone. Look over on the Android development thread and you will see 2 Hero 2.1 roms. Not fully working but if you wanna test go for it. Once its done downloading I am testing this stuff. Just remember it is GSM so we will have to change stuff to make it work with ours.

True but this is a good sign as obviously the Hero 2.1 dump has been unwatermarked. I am trying to see if there is a way I can get ahold of the dump because I believe it might be a CDMA dump. If not, then we will just have to wait.

Wait if Android 1.6 and 2.0 both have CDMA support built in then all we're missing our the specific drivers for the Hero which should be available in the 2.0 leak to GSM phones right?
Also, I don't understand how we are at a disadvantage because CDMA wasn't built into 1.5. The drivers for individual phones aren't built into Android so why wouldn't that sink us just as much as the no-CDMA thing?
I'm an EVO guy so I thought I'd ask here as well. My brother is on Verizon and looking to get either a fascinate or the X. He asked me which I thought. So I popped into their development forums to have a peek.
There doesnt seem to be much at all for either verizon phone in the way of ROM's. Am I correct in assumng that the EVO community is just so much more badass? He likes the things I show him with my phone and wants to be able to do something similar.
Is there another phone, forum, or something I'm missing that could help me get some better info as to what to recommend to him? Or if anyone here has a little Verizon experience they can share with me. Thanks for any info at all!

HTC phones have always gotten way more support. For example, the Incredible on Verizon probably gets as much support as the EVO.
As for the two you mentioned, the Droid X, as far as I know, still hasn't gotten cracked. You can root it but can't flash custom ROMs. The Fascinate I don't know much about. Cyanogen Mod is being ported to some Galaxy S phones but I'm not sure if that includes the Verizon one. Either way, Samsung dev support is always slower.
Edit: If he can wait, there's a Verizon branded G2/HTC Desire Z coming out soon (?). There's also rumors of a Motorola "super phone" that will ship with a dual core Tegra 2 by hopefully holiday season (or if not, Q1 2011).
Nice that you mention the Incredible, he currently has that so we're gonna root that and play with it for awhile see if he can hold off getting another phone till the next big thing comes out.
Thanks.
If he's going to get a phone right now, then one of the Droids, preferrably the Incredible. Droid X is 2nd, and Fascinate is last. Why? It's a Bingphone. Like the Kin, which died after just a few weeks. That's right, al of the Google apps have been removed and replaced by Bing apps, and the Google stuff on the Market are practically hidden.
If he has the incredible why does he want another phone? Like stated above, incredible gets almost the same amount of support the evo does.

if he already has the Droid incredible he has no business getting a new phone. awesome dev community and still in the top tier of hardware. its pretty much a mini evo without 4g and hdmi.
in the coming months you will start to see phones that may actually be substantially better than the DINC, but nothing atm. i would hold on the the DINC for at least a year.
Stick with the incredible until the next HTC phone or something better is released.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4G using XDA app.
I think just because the fact that he's had the incredible so long, he assumed it was time to get a new one. He doesnt keep a phone too long, and me not being on Verizon I didnt know there was so much support for the incredible. I'm going to recommend he just hold onto that for now.
After many failures with the newer hardware versions, Unrevoked came thru with flying colors. I wanted to thank everyone for their time and effort for not just me, but all the other chicken-sh!t folks out there. This is my first posting, as I didn't want to ask questions that others were asking. Believe it or not, my biggest obstacle was trying to root using windows 7, 64 bit. Worked like a champ on a 32bit version.
I removed most of the sprint apps, but kept a few. I found out that removing some will make it impossible to load new apps. There was still a bit of trial and error, but I could have not done it without everyone's help. I removed all the apps using Titanium. The only issue is that it does not seem to back everything up that you select (so no restore); however nandroid to the rescue. The biggest issue with that software is the names in Titanium does not always match what people recommend to remove via a terminal session.
My next leap will be a new rom (possibly gingerbread when it's finalized). I am happy just to get rid of the major sprint crap. Speaking of Sprint, I talked with a good buddy in corporate (yes I know everyone says this) and he told me don't hold your breath for a EVO 2 anytime soon, if at all this year. They really thought the Epic would be the next evolution, but we all know better. They don't foresee a new a new HTC replacement this year, which is a shame. Also, I was told that Sprint and HTC are banging heads regarding upgrading us to Gingerbread. Also, the shocker to me is that Clearwire is starting to test LTE with an unknown phone. Apparently with Verizon talking about being LTE only now, Clearwire is on the run. I would be happy with any 4G service at this point. Who knows, maybe the sexy LG dual core phone will make it's way to sprint.
I will end this long monologue with a quick question.... Is there a multi-purpose ROM that will enable me to keep the camera, 4G (if it ever comes to us) , tethering and a few of the other goodies that you have to give up when you switch.
Again, bow to all the effort put into these forums.
What hardware version do you have

getting a wifi version for sure. It would be awesome if I could preorder tomorrow at bestbuy.
Yeah, since it went through the FCC, I'm hoping for a simultaneous release. Unfortunately, none of the 'leaked' advertisements have so much as hinted at a WiFi version, so I doubt it's going to be so soon.
I'm undecided on whether thats a good thing or not. As early adopters we're taking the risk that this thing is not rootable. If its not I for one will be really disappointed.
What I'm saying is letting the 3G guys take the risk could be decent for those looking forward to WiFi.
That was my cynical half talking.
Practical half here,
No way could it be locked down, if so, Motorola really shot itself in the foot.
I hope Canada gets the wifi version ASAP.
I'm like the rest of you, waiting on the wifi release date. There really isn't any reason we shouldn't know it by now.

Most, if not all, Motorola phones have a locked bootloader. I don't know what this means exactly, since I've never had a Moto phone, but it can't be good for development. I'll bet the Xoom's bootloader is also locked.

Really, really hope not. Can anyone cite where it says Google Experience devices have to have unlocked bootloaders?
+1 for wifi xoom....
I don't think there is anything that explicitly says what standard a Google experience device needs to adhere to, other than straight vanilla android goodness... I guess I need to refine my statement from earlier.
The way the Xoom is being marketed, it seems like it is being pushed similarly to the Nexus S. With Google working specifically with the Moto Xoom as a showcase for their new 3.0 platform I would be hard pressed to think it would be locked down.
as a caveat to my previous statement, Motorola is the only manufacturer that has successfully locked down any major portion of the OS from modders, so it is kind of scary to think of such a sweet device getting overlooked by the development community here at XDA.
I have the Droid X, and while you can root it... you can't mess with the dang kernel. Take a look at the type of ROMs for the Nexus line of phones.. and then compare them to the type of ROMs for the Droid X. I love my Rubix and ApeX ROMs tho, so don't think I'm ungrateful... we have a great community I just hope the Xoom doesn't share the same fate.
I just hope it's within the 30 day return window that we find out if it's locked or not.
"The way the Xoom is being marketed, it seems like it is being pushed similarly to the Nexus S. With Google working specifically with the Moto Xoom as a showcase for their new 3.0 platform I would be hard pressed to think it would be locked down. "
Thats where I'm worried. Marketing is inherently deceptive as is Verizon in my limited experience.
I've been out of the Android game for sometime, what is usually the turnaround time between launch and root w/ kernel access?

It varies, depends on how difficult the device was to root. Sometimes a device is rooted before it's even released, and sometimes it can take months.
usually someone would have rooted the device by now lol... The incredible was rooted before it was available, and so was the EVO.
I'm sure root will be achieved, but kernel access is another story entirely. Since most who do initial rooting on devices know where to find the possible roadblocks, it shouldn't be too far off from launch when we find out if the device is encrypted or not. I give it 2 days after release max and we'll know if it has an encrypted bootloader.
Really, devices have been rooted before release? How is that possible?

Its true, lol... I got my evo the day it released. Had it less than 20 minutes and was already going thru the rooting process. I think the OG root method was put a week or so before the phone actually came out. No idea how the hell they do it but im glad they do.
