I'm interested in purchasing the HTC Imagio to join an extra line on a family plan. Does anyone know if a data plan is required upon activation? I realize the appeal of having a data plan, but I'm interested in activating this phone without the data plan.
verizon will not let you activate this type of phone without a data plan.
Thanks for the response!
Do you know what the difference between the 2 data plans are offered by Verizon? There is the:
1. Unlimited Data Usage $44.99/month
2. Email and Web for Smartphone $29.99/month

I've been trying to purchase a Galaxy Tab from AT&T, and I would like to know if I were to unlock it, would I be able to use my regular sim card that has unlimited data on it ? I have a family plan and 3 of the lines have unlimited data plans and I'm not planning on adding another data plan for 25.00 a month. Thank you in advance

Yes.

Hey guys just upgraded to Atrix liking it so far! Never had unlimited data before but couldn't justify having it without unlimited data so been researching the current loophole and just wanted to share what I found out.
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2) Hard reset the iphone, put in your simcard, and register the iPhone 2G in iTunes. You will be asked to confirm you agree to $20/month unlimited 2g data + 200 text messages.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Find a CSR that will change your Iphone 2g plan to unlimited smartphone personal. I tried over the phone multiple times and they kept on saying they couldn't do it since the unlimited plan didn't exist before June 2010. I was about to give up but went to a retail location and the guy did it on his computer.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
NOTE: Whatever you do DO NOT let them change your data plan off the iPhone data plan. If you lose that plan you need a new simcard and to start over. I think I may have had more difficulties cause I am on a business account, but it still worked!
I am almost certain that you came in my store and I did this for you hahahah
I had someone come in my store this evening who did the samething...we werent in san diego but he lived there
good find though, ill let my customers know that..might be worth it to invest in an iphone 2g and leave it at my store for customers to use

Hmm.... Awkward lol.
I'm Confused. So with this I'm limited to 200 text messages a month? And what exactally do I ask the csr to change in the store? Wouldn't the regular 2g data plan work on the atrix?

Does it stay $20/month...?
what you are doing is making your phone an Iphone 2g.
making your phone an Iphone 2g gives you the unlimited 2g data (that comes with 200 texts as well) for $20.
Our in store systems allow us to go from unlimited 2g $20 to the unlimited 3g/4g data for $30 giving you unlimited data to your atrix/inspire/captivate if you didnt have it before.

You must be the coolest AT&T rep ever! haha
Moving off the EDGE network
I don't know about anywhere else around the country but AT&T is slowly migrating everybody off of the 2G / EDGE network. I don't know how much longer AT&T will allow you to activate 2G iPhones on the network.

So after this is done, is it $30 per month, with unlimited data? Also, am I still limited to the 200 text?
Thanks for your help.

Or you can "request" unlimited data with customer service on a new 2yr contract upgrade or new you have to do it through customer service and it might take a few calls Ive been able to add it without a problem on 4 lines last weekend. If you have 2g/3g data on the device you may experience service issues more awkward than normal by using this method in the OP I had a 3g unlimited on my main line and upgraded without change and pages barley loaded with full bars, this is not recommended to use the iphone data plan.
Will update with the feature code and name as soon as I can.
Would this work with an iPhone 3g? My friend has one lying around I could probably borrow to swing this. Also wondering about the ability to get unlimited texts.
edit: And I'll probably try the whole, calling customer service until I get what I want, plan soon.

No it won't work for a iPhone 3G. The reason this works for the original iPhone is that the only option for the phone is unlimited data. The 200 text messages has no affect on you if you have family messaging unlmited etc. Even if you have unlimited text you can always call back in to get it added back on.
So i tried to do the trick with an Iphone 2G, I checked online to verify and i think it went fine. Also online it gives me an option to change my Iphone Data plan to the Smartphone Bundles (1. SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500 Message for $39.99 2.SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 200 Messages for $35.00 3. Smartphone Personal Unlimited Data for $30)
Should i keep the Iphone Data plan or change it to the SmartPhone Personal plans?

Option 3 is a current unlimited smart phone data plan for the device, its thinking you had it and changed devices use this option so that way the data plan will work correctly for the device. You'll still have $30 unlimited data aswell.
If you are getting the option for smartphone personal unlimited that is the correct data plan for the atrix. iPhone plan doesn't support 4G as far as I know, if that ever happens.
This trick is more common for iPhone 4 users, where once they plug the sim back into the iPhone 4 the system automatically detects it is not a 2G device within a few hours and auto upgrades them to the $30/month iPhone data plan with a text messages alerting the customer. Chances are you will not be able to stay on the $20/month plan so I'd switch before AT&T realizes you are using a 2G iPhone data plan on an Atrix.
I should be good if i change it to the SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500Message for $39.99 right?
Yes, It's still a smartphone unlimited data plan!
it's giving me this error when i try to process it.
What should i do now? call customer service?

You are never limited to 200 texts even on the original $20 iphone plan. You can still add a text plan on top of it. It just uses your 200 and then starts using whatever else you have on plan.
But when you move to the $30 plan you lose the texts anyway.

I recently discovered that ATT gophone (prepay or pay as you go) for android phones is only 50/month and everything is unlimited...voice/text/data. There is no way you can go over any limits, even if you tried to.
Can anyone verify this is actually the case and if they use this?
Apparently you have to purchase an additional data plan if you are using IOS or WP7, but not Android. I'd love to know if anyone knows why this is the case.
I'm currently on tmobile im paying over 100/month, but the 3g limitations on the GNote is maing me switch to att, thankfully. This should cover the cost of the note in less than one year.
Thanks,
Jason

I think its his/her enterprise data plan.
My Note's on the way - should be here on tuesday. Meanwhile, my 2 yr verizon contract ends tomorrow, so i signed up with at&t. I picked the post-paid month-to-month plan that includes 450min. + unlimited data (for non-smartphones) which would bring my monthly bill to $70. I was thinking of doing the $50 gophone thing but then i read that coverage not as extensive, speed throttling on prepaid, etc. so i'd rather just spend the little extra for the benefits of postpaid.

Sorry to break it to you, but I don't think that it works like that. The $50.00 unlimited plan only provides unlimited data for non-smartphones. You can get that plan with an Android phone, but if you do, you will have no Internet access. If you don't talk much and don't use too much data, you could go with the $25.00/250min plan plus the $25.00/500MB data plan. (Source: I just chatted with a support rep.)
Personally, I'm hoping that they either release a US-compatible CDMA version in the near future, or that the people in this thread succeed in getting the existing Note to run on T-Mobile. If either happens soon, I will probably import one immediately.
Grandfathered $30/mo unlimited data plan for me. Good thing too, because I usually go through 10+GB of data per month!! Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and Google Music. Make sense now?
So your bill at the end of the month is $30 plus tax? Is there a voice anf text plan or is this all inclusive? This is through att and if so is pre or post pay?

He has the grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan. It's $30/month on your bill. It stopped being obtainable about 1 year ago.
Yes I am crystal clear on the $30/ month part for unlimited data. I'm ado quite clear on the definition of grandfathered in this context. This however does not answer my question regarding
1) which service provider(I'm assuming ATT, but I'm not sure)?
2) does this also include voice and text or does he have those plans in addition to his grandfathered 30/month data plan?
Thanks,
Jason

This is patently false. I've been on the non-smartphone data with AT&T for over 3 years using a variety of imported, unlocked smartphones (android and otherwise).
Well that's good news for me then. Do you have full internet capabilities? Also could you tell me which plan, provider, pre or post pay?
Thanks!

I am post-paid on AT&T, 450min/mo @ $39.99 + $10 unlimited data for non smartphones (MEdiaNet) + $20 Unlimited texting / mobile to mobile calling. If you search about there are a ton of people on AT&T doing this. The caveat is that your IMEI number cannot be in AT&T's system as a smartphone. That means you need to use an international market unlocked phone. There are people doing this with Galaxy SII and you don't need root or anything else.
Also, if you are bringing your own hardware (GNote) you don't need to sign a contract either (even post-paid) so you can quit whenever you want. Just get a SIM and activate it.
You can always go to T-Mobile and do the $50 prepaid contract that does unlimited talk, text, and web. But you have to provide your own cell phone or purchase one from them or elsewhere. This is a really good deal, it also gives 4g if you have a 4g phone.

Sadly, T-Mo uses AWS frequencies for HSPDA that aren't available on the Note.
Ok so why wouldn't you do the 50/month prepay (att) which has unlimited voice/text/data and use the same dumbphone imei?
It seems you currently pay 69/month with some limitations.

My Note is arriving this week. I am planning to use Straight Talk following this wiki:
http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/Straight_Talk_Android
$45/mo prepaid for unlimited talk/text/data using AT&T towers.
With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

no no i was wondering is it possible to use the 15 dollar unlimited feature phone data option? If i was to activate it ona feature phone first then put it in my sim. When do you think they would add the smartphone one. But I will test the tmobile prepaid sim i got in a tester phone I have first before in it because Im on sprint need to test my network options lol.
Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
I had the unlimited data plan from verizon single like. I upgraded to the tiered plan add a line 20 bucks more to get the promo buy an s7 get one free. Now my plan is changed but i still have unlimited data on my main line. I hope i did not make a mistake by changing my plan. I still have unlimited data. anyway after changing my plan the verizon guy told me i could not move my phones or in other words say give one to a friend to put on their account because verizon checks the imei number to make sure those phones stay with their perspective owners. I was told if i move or give my phone or even sell it i would loose my unlimited data. is this true.
so my questions are
1. did i make a mistake in changing my plan
2. is it true if i give a phone away and to a friend will i loose my unlimited data.
