Once the Tab is unlocked, can u use your own sim card? - Galaxy Tab General

I've been trying to purchase a Galaxy Tab from AT&T, and I would like to know if I were to unlock it, would I be able to use my regular sim card that has unlimited data on it ? I have a family plan and 3 of the lines have unlimited data plans and I'm not planning on adding another data plan for 25.00 a month. Thank you in advance

Data plan required for activation?

I'm interested in purchasing the HTC Imagio to join an extra line on a family plan. Does anyone know if a data plan is required upon activation? I realize the appeal of having a data plan, but I'm interested in activating this phone without the data plan.
verizon will not let you activate this type of phone without a data plan.
Thanks for the response!
Do you know what the difference between the 2 data plans are offered by Verizon? There is the:
1. Unlimited Data Usage $44.99/month
2. Email and Web for Smartphone $29.99/month

Heads Up For AT&T Data

Just a heads up for GSM owners. I tried to get a data plan with AT&T today and after over an hour on the phone they told me that the only "data only" plan their system can add for the note 10.1 is a 5gb plan for $50. If you want the 3gb plan you also need a voice plan.

If you already have a plan with AT&T you can add the Note to your existing account as a non-Smartphone device. It's $9.99 for the extra device and $10 for unlimited HSPA+ data which isn't throttled or soft-capped because you're using the Cingular (3G) APN vs. the Phone (4G) APN. If you don't have unlimited messaging on the account the data is $15 vs. $10. The Note can share the plan minutes that are on the account for voice calls. Since the 3G Note is a foriegn device AT&T doesn't track the IMEI and can't detect that it's not just a dumb phone.

PMentior, BarryH_GEG is correct. If you already have an account with AT&T, just say it is a non-smartphone and will work great. I tested using my SIM card from my SIII and works great. I did noitce that indeed APN shows as Cingular, so like Barry mention you will have unlimited data. Here is a video of the Galaxy Note 10.1 I did, to show how to use it as hotspot and make phone calls.
Thanks for the replies. I know that I could get it set up with the media but plan but thats not really what I was going for. I don't need data on it too often, only when I go on a trip. With the tablet plans being no commitment I could pick it up only for a month here or there when I need it. With the media net plan it seems like I would be paying every month for services I don't need.
From my talk with att it seems like their system isn't seeing it as a valid tablet yet but I assume that would change in the coming months when the LTE version is released. Maybe I'll try again later but for now it is a case of something I would like to have but I know I don't need it.
As a side note I tried a prepaid tmobile data sim and I do get coverage but only edge speeds. I wish tmobile didn't use weird frequency bands for their data as the setup for the data sim was super fast and easy. If only att could be more like that.

Oh I see. Have you tried getting a pre-paid SIM card for a non-smartphone. I haven't checked into those yet, but if it does work with whatever plans they have, you could use a months worth and pay as you need it.

Unlimited Data @ ATT for only $15

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SW4h1tOAsg4
Wasn't sure if this worked, and if you actually order the phone, wouldn't you have to pay for the plan?
I believe att can detect your phone and will automatically put you on a corresponding iPhone (bull****) plan, not 100% sure though, I do know that international phones can be used on the Medianet dumbphone data plan though.
This is very interesting and I am really thinking about trying it out. The only bummer is you ahve to by a phone just to get the sim card. If anyone tries this out let us know how it goes and if I try it out first I will let you know.
OK I Activate AT&T Phones Daily and of my best friends works at a AT&T Call Center, so here's some FAQ
Is it really unlimited data for $15?
Yes it is Unlimited Data for any Basic AT&T Phone, but if your trying to use it with a smart phone and use like 8GB of Data in a month they will be suspect
Will it work with a Smartphone?
Yes and no, If your using a AT&T Model Phone AT&T Will either block data or in most cases add the data package
If you have a T-Mobile Unlocked Phone or a Unlocked International GSM Phone it will not be in AT&T's System so you won't be flagged
Do you have to do anything to make it work?
Well Yes APN, you have to use the MediaNet APN, The normal 4G and LTE APNS will not work
Also to note Many New Go Phone Sim Cards are now Married to the phones IMEI they ship with and will not work in another phone unless you get a sim unlock code, I have verified this with the $19 Samsung Flip phone ZTE Z431, ZTEAvail, and the AT&T Fusion, I tried the sim card that came with the phones in my Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Samsung Vibrant and Samsung Propel
Thank you for your investigation, saved me the time I would've spent asking questions and searching for answers.
Well what I want to know is, if you buy one of those messaging phones for $0.01 on the 2 year contract like the video says, so that you get the sim, won't you have to pay for the 2 yr contract regardless? Or do they not charge you unless you activate it?

Yes you would, You would be required to commit to a 2 year contract and would have to at Minimum have the 450 Min for $39.99 and the $20 Unlimited Texting or $0.20 Per Text Message and the $15 Basic Phone Data Package so that video isn't really correct..
If you want "Unlimited Smartphone on AT&T then the Straight Talk Sim Cards are a much better way to go, For $45 a month you have Unlimited Talk, Text, Web, Data, I setup a Friend with a Galaxy S Captivate on it and he has the Full 3G Speeds and has had months he's hit 6GB and never had a Issue, The only thing you have to watch for is if you want to do the Wireless Hotspot, It is against the TOS to do Hotspot but you can Use Wifi Tether For Root Users and it will show as Mobile Web Usage so they won't bug you.
You can get the Straight Talk Sims in Both Full Size and Micro Sim Versions for Both AT&T and T-Mobile, and if you put the AT&T Sim in a AT&T Phone you don't even have to unlock it to work, I've setup Go Phones, iPhones, HTC Sensation 4G, HTC Mytouch 4G, Samsung Captivate, AT&T Avail http://straighttalksim.com/shop.php

Ok guys so I found an about 8 month old ATT sim that's never been activated, and I just got an ATT manager to give me an unnactivated sim. Is there anyway I can use either of these on the plan?

Hey guys. Quick question regarding the plan. I have an International S3 and I had the 10$ Data plan on AT&T . For some reason, I just received a txt message that they have changed my plan to the smartphone plan. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

you should probably check the other thread about thisBenefits of International S3
Seems like they caught on about this workaround so not much you can do. You can try calling them again and reactivating the $10 plan but it will just be a matter of time before they swap it back again

No data plan needed on AT&T.

With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

They do reactivate your data plan but from what I seen its pretty rare. I have some friends running ATT without data plan and they haven't activated a data plan for them yet.

no no i was wondering is it possible to use the 15 dollar unlimited feature phone data option? If i was to activate it ona feature phone first then put it in my sim. When do you think they would add the smartphone one. But I will test the tmobile prepaid sim i got in a tester phone I have first before in it because Im on sprint need to test my network options lol.
Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
