New Smartphone User Looking for Advice. - Hero CDMA General

This is my very first smart phone so when I switched over from the Iden network I about stroked out...LOL....been with Nextel for over 10 years. I'm sure you get this question a ton, and I have done some reading through this forum. (A close friend referred me here) Im looking for what you would term "absolute essentials" in regards to running the phone. If you have advice for me to learn from, please share it. Understand that Im a "Virgin" to these phones, so if you tell me that my flux capacitor needs adjusting, I will probably believe you..
Anyways..sorry to bother you guys with this, was just looking for your opinions........

What are you looking for, exactly?

oops.. I guess I could have clarified a bit better. Basically looking to find out what people view as essential apps. Things to do or avoid to make sure my Hero runs smooth. Those type of things. Im really new with this phone, and I'm sure I will learn a ton, but I have a nasty habit of messing stuff up.. Does that clarify a little bit better?
Thanks for your time.
Brian

I love hacking the crap out of my phone that's number 1 to me.
2nd id have to say senseUI is the best phone experience Ive ever had.
3rd is Android. There is so many good things about Android im not even getting into it.
4th is value. Sprint's network is very good in my area and it's half the price of other android carriers and free calling to any mobile phones
Thats a winner for me

HD2 Breaks my Heart

Hey everyone i know that there has been about 20 of these posts and threads about ppl hating or being upset with the HD2, but i feel that i have to post this.
*
For a few months now I have been eagerly waiting for HTC to release a USA version of the HD 2 before conforming to apple or android well the dream came through and T-Mobile gets one will all these goods HSDP+ which gives you super fast 3G which is not in my area as of yet but waiting for it to get here but back to the goodies movies really cool apps and preloaded games I have had HTC phones all my live no other phone. But this phone seems so great lack the WP7S which now dropped the S LOL but I could care less for 7 for mobile. What I’m getting to is this phone is a beast with has a lot of potential but the sad truth is that you have to tune this phone for almost every thing to work but then you’ll get bugs regardless what you do its like buying a Ferrari enzo and having to tweak it that just does not make any sense to me. no matter what hardware you have from HTC its always going to miss one thing team work Micro Soft makes this great software that I know can do great things but because there are so many manufactures making devices for them with so many different hardware specs you’ll have issues left and right no matter what you. Hence why there are the Windows the market place and applications for windows mobile sucks so bad developers like Gameloft, EAGames, Capcom and others like fandango and 100s of others don’t take windows mobile devices so serious. i hate to say this but apples device specs don’t match up to what to what windows devices do but because its one device one hardware once manufacture there will always be great games and applications for apple iphone/ipod/ Ipad whatever. i cant expect XDA to make me happy with fixing and making a dedicated team or get other nationwide Developers to see the hd2 for what it is and can do. XDA has too many damn phones to tweak for the world. the HD2 is a great phone for big windows mobile users. i can say im a big htc/widows user but you cant tell me thay sometimes you wish you didnt have to tweak your phone unleast you reallly Have to. too many many companys are in the cell phone game with the same os on them. We will never see the full potentional because its DOA im tired of the rom flashing game. im not moving to apple because they suck and jobs can you know what as for android there in the same page as windows mobile too many wanna bees aka manufactures. ill keep my hd2 because i support htc and windows till thw day i die but know this phone broke my heart like a beautiful chick with a 10 sec memory bank no matter what she wont get it lol if you dont like my thoughts im sry i wasted your time
post you thoughts and comments here maybe some pointers and hits on what to do and if the tmo stock rom is just complete otter garbage
Uhmmm I have a comment.
My brain now hurts from trying to read your ramblings of confusion. Try using capital letters, breaking up your run on sentences, and for gods sake try proof reading your post before throwing it out there for all to see.
Now having said that. They are two different OSs with two different people in mind as users. The iPhone is a child's toy as far as I'm concerned. It's apps are made for 13 year olds that want a phone filled with mostly useless apps. On the other hand you have Windows Mobile which is for people who want to be productive with their time. Maybe get something accomplished while still out of the office. Now I'm not saying the the iPhone doesn't have it share of useful apps it's like I said though two different user bases.
Having a phone with enough power to get almost anything done is nice but yes as usual with any Window product you will have to tweak it to get it to your liking. I'm thankful I have the ability to do this out of the box without having to jailbreak my phone or pay for it. I have not a problem I couldn't solve so far with the phone by coming here and searching the vast amount of information and knowledge.
If you feel better after rambling then it was worth reading your post.
sry about the really bad post lol i didnt have time to proof read it at all had like 10 mins to type it on my phone battery was dying should have just waited now i look like a fool lol sry man
try listing some of the problems that you have been experiencing. a lot of other hd2 owners that i know in person seem to be having the same complaints; freezing, lagging, screen blackout, etc.
this website has helped tremendously in helping with such issues. simple things like using the task manager and a program called "free ram" help the hd2 run smoothly.
on top of that, i found that i can tweak the way i want the phone to operate by turning off certain widgets to save battery life. i also found some great programs such as s2u2 for custom lockscreens, bsb tweaks and co0kie's home tab to make the hd2 run the way i want it to. i.e., enabling pinch ande zoom to skyfire and IE. enabling rotation to google maps, etc.

Who needs periods, commas, or any punctuation marks anyway
It's that not I don't understand the issues but whats the sense of making a post if it makes no sense. Take a breath slow down and explain your actual issues. Many of them can simple be solved by using a rom that actually works. I have yet to use a stock rom that works right out of the box. Load a custom rom and it's a whole new phone. Yes custom roms are not without problems but most times they're little compared to the bloat that comes with stock roms.
Ok one i get random device.exe fail and other programs fail giving me that Microsoft error ...exe fail. For instances Opera, FPSECE 10, Morph Gear and the Camera gives me the same .exe Microsoft error. Also the music tab takes ages to load my music from the memory card . One more thing even after using Chainfires 3D drivers 1.1 and TX 3d Performance update than preloaded game Ferrari GT evolution lags so bad man. All of these problems repeat their self even after a hard reset. Oh and Chill with the spelling and all this I’m puzzled from reading my post I’m pretty sure I made my self clear onto why it looks that way ether help me or just keep it moving.
Try lossing the stock rom and that will solve a good bit of your issues. Also might want to make sure you have .NetFramework 3.5 installed.
Simple. First, lose the stock rom. Next, move the racing game from the sd card to the phone memory. Tada.
There are much bigger problems than the easily solvable problems you mention (my sig comes to mind). No reason for you to complain!
Again wisdom, the problem lies with the OS and Hardware, i dont think HTC and WM will ever take advantage of the specific hardware in our devices for the sole reason that there too many differences. Why do you think the iphone runs so smooth...well think about it an OS designed for its proprietary hardware/software, the OS is taking full advantage of the hardware's efficiency. But with proprietary software comes a drawback, developers need to redesign there software to run on that specific device, this is where i think WM wins because its OS architecture has been out for so long being its universal capabilities with hardware where else apple likes to stick to there own s**t, well thats dandy and all but it doesn't work all that well with developers that started off with windows for so many years, so now we need new developers to start fresh. look at all the apps not on the marketplace that have been out for years..apple doesn't come close, the marketplace just makes it easyier for our users today to find what they need, "Competition". please correct me if im wrong but this is my view. I always thought about this for example take your PC's hardware running Windows and tell a game developer to design a game to your specific hardware and OS, just imagine the performance difference to a universal platform game, thats why alot of games designed for an apple computer run most of the time 50% to 100% better then the same game on windows pc without having to upgrade your videocard... Im still waiting for the day that the hardware in our HTC WM devices are matched perfectly with the correct/proper drivers! My HD2 which you bought for me is fast as hell, but just imagine how much faster it can be...This is just my 2 cents.

You still understood what he was saying did you not? We all have are strong and weak points. Your reply would have been fine without "My brain now hurts from trying to read your ramblings of confusion. Hey it was just one more suggestion to help solve his problem. Nothing like speaking clearly and being able to get the point across. Do you like to talk to somebody who mumbles under their breath all day. Do you like to talk to somebody who incoherently babbles? I doubt you do. No different here, I have no problem helping people, I have no problem trying to figure out what somebody is saying but when it's a complete paragraph of gibberish there is not much I can do. I could understand if he was some where in Europe and English was not his primary language.

JUST STFU!!!!!!!!
At least this thread is good for one thing, getting a good laugh.
And yes I do hate Apple with a passion. You like it so much go buy an iPhone and STFU yourself. I never said every app was childish or made for children I simply said they are marketed more towards children or should I say the simple minded. Hence it is a child's toy.

want to come over to the HTC world from Blackberry...but..

i was wondering who in here has come over to this phone from a blackberry.
likes? dislikes?
i have been reading some on here about the "lag" with the HTC HD2. is this true? all the reviews i read say nothing about it. and i do not like a laggy phone. and disabling Sense makes no "sense" to me...
also, is there alot of customizations that can be done? how about updates? are they common like on a blackberry? will win7 mobile be able to be run on this? hows the battery life compared to the iphone? (that is why i dont have an iphone any more, i cant stand the battery life)
i LOVe the looks of that phone...
Thanks all!
I jummped the Blackberry ship for the HD2 last week.
I wont be able to answer ALL your questions 100%, but I will be able to help.
Lag, If you use your task manager and close the unused programs, then you *shouldnt* have any lag. I am still using the stock phone settings from T-Mo. and I am not seeing any lag at all just by closing the app/programs this way.
Customizing, The phone is still new, and the devs here are working hard to push out new stuff all the time. But the phone is VERY customisable. If your comfy working with DLL and CAB files you can change the layout/colors/buttons/exctra of the dif screanes and apps.
WP7, As of right now.. No. But the devs here are working on it, as well as the Droid os.
While Blackberry has updates offten, it still upto the provider to push em out to the end users, and T-Mo, is the worst at doing so. But you can get all the updates/mods/apps from the devs here.
Batterie life can be awesome, or it can be the bane of your phone. lol. If you keep task manager clean, the batterie will last for wat feels like for ever. I ran both of the Transformer movies from start to credits, played on the internet a bit, and made a few calls, and still had a lot of bat strength left. but if you run a lot of apps in the back ground, and dont keep your task manager clean, you will charge your phone 2x a days.
Over all im loving this phone. I have a ton to learn about it still, but it is a great phone.
My $.02
Wolfee
Thank you so much for your reply. that helped alot.
i just sold 2 of my BB's, so i am looking now at buying one i cant wait
I have to say with my blackberry experience with the one I carry around for work, a Nextel 8350i. being the network admin for the company I work for, and I also work with the BES server software. they can get pretty laggy as well at times. especially when there is alot of background data transfer going on to the BES server.
In the end i prefer my HD2 to blackberry. I consider the BB a good platform for someone who wants something that just works, and arent very technically minded like the people I work with. I can already imagine the issues Id run into trying to introduce the WinMo platform there.
WinMo is good for technical users that like to tweak and customize and can live with or work around the occasional bug, and are able to figure things out for themselves or with the help of a support forum like this
I would never recommend WinMo for someone that requires hand holding with anything technical/computer related. it just becomes too much of a hassle and waste of time for me having to support them.
great post...that makes me feel better to. i feel the same way, i have owned alot of blackberrys and they do lag alot more.
and i am one who LOVES to tinker with things..so i am thinking i might like this better...are there ways to recover if you play TO much and brick your phone?
also i cant seem to find any screen shots of what the sms inbox looks like? was wondering. is it threaded messages?
IF you successfully install HSPL, the chances of really "bricking" your HD2 are pretty low. The worst thing you can do "brick" a TMOUS HD2 is to flash an incompatible Radio (one with ...51... in the identifier string). As long as you stay with T-Mobile compatible Radios/ROMs, you should be fine.

Yeah, it has threaded sms messages. And there are almost always ways to recover your phone from bricking it, unless you flash the wrong radio, like he said in the post above. Just don't flash ones with .51 in them and your fine. Odds are you won't even need to flash your radio, so it's nothing to worry about. Good luck with your new HD2. Its the most versatile, powerful phone when you learn to use it well.
Yeah, I was a fellow BlackBerry user. I've had 2 in past... and my most recent device was the BlackBerry 9700.
I certainly miss the days where I'd manage to squeeze 70 hours out of a single charge cycle.
But nevertheless, I am absolutely in love with the HD2. Plus, I've owned countless HTC products, and I'm always left satisfied and smiling...
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!
(I couldn't help myself...)
i JUST got it! walmart had one left and i had a gift certificate. omg i love it alreay, and i have not even started to play with it. Guys i need your help...
what do i do first? updates? how do i know what updates to do? are there any tutorials in here i can read about noobs? i want to make sure mine is up to date for sure...but so far i love it. what a nice screen and feel...
LOVE IT!
I just upgraded from a Blackberry curve, and from an IT professional's standpoint, I love this phone. The ability to tinker, the software community here, multimedia capabilities, and the tools built in (wifi access point, slacker, etc.) are a welcome breath of fresh air to having a smart phone.
i have been looking and reading, but im getting a little confused. where do i go to find any updates for my phone? i cant seem to find any on the HTC website?

oh ok, that is what i wondered...so there are NO updates for the tmobile version? is that becasue i already have a newer ROM with all those updates on it? my rom is Dated 2/22/10 and is version 2.10.531.1 (82076) WWe
is this because the tmobile version just came out?

For this to be a smooth transition you must realize this is a completely different experience. There will not be a lot, if any, official updates. What there will be is unofficial/leaked updates that are implemented in custom (cooked) roms. Some of these will be leaked from Microsoft and some will be released from HTC but TMobile USA will most likely not leak any. Don't panic though, because this is why we love XDA Devs so much.
You will need to read MSkips tutorial on flashing HardSPL. HSPL will allow you to flash these custom roms and a few other things. These custom roms will often be cutting edge so read which ones you really want because some will simply be going for speed, others looks and others stability. There are some great cooks around here who actually combine all three.
I write this because you are already panicking on a lack of updates. That's just not how it works here so you have to let it go. You don't find the same OS version on every model like in BlackBerry or Iphone over here. Older models are having roms cooked for them that include what only the new ones have out the box because many of the older phones here don't have the memory or are simply out of the loop for the carrier and HTC. My 8525 was like that. I'm just explaining so you understand the landscape better.
The best way to succeed here is to search and ask questions once you can't find the answers. Most of the stuff you have questions about has been asked and answered before (most but not all). Make sure to read in this forum and the other HD2 forum because the phones aren't that different. If you have a question or concern about a specific program or rom make sure you ask the question in that thread and not create a new thread.
Welcome to WinMo and XDA Devs. Also our TMo USA HD2's do have the latest official updates.
Hope your htc hd2 blows up! The starter of this thread is a joke! He bothers me for two days texting me as early as 5am saying he wants the phone please dont sell, as he's waiting for the money. We make a deal after going back and fourth on text messages. He tells me a few hours later he's not buying because he bought it locally at walmart. WHAT A PATHETIC JERK!! I ^&%^ wasted my time taking pix to send him just for him to take this whole thing as a JOKE! I lost out on another potential deal because this idiot agreed on buying it. BE AWARE of this LOSER!!!

I really don't know what to say about this. Did I talk with him about buying his phone yes, did we talk back and fourth all day about it? yes. Isn't that what craigslist is all about? bartering, making deals etc? it was at the last moment when i found out a local walmart had one HD2 left at the same price he was selling it at, and i had a gift card so it was even cheaper, and it was 5 min from my house (for returns etc) so that is why i backed out. I am in no way a "scammer" because of this. sorry, im not.
I apologized multiple times, and he wont accept, so there is no more that I can do. I even tried a few contacts to see if they would buy it from him. I cant do any more...
on a positive, Jain75 was Very good with communication, and answered all my questions i had about the sale. he did take multiple pictures for me like i had asked. I had asked for all of that, because i was sending someone 450 dollars whom i did not know, so i wanted all the proof that the phone was legit that i could get. and he did give that all to me.
again, i feel really bad, but what else can i do? i have had MANY MANY people say "yeah ill buy that, let me get back to you" and i never hear back. at least i told him the truth,....
I just recently came over from a blackberry storm 2 to hd2 April 1. Let me say that the HD2 is a totally different experience from blackberry. I loved how the blackberry managed my business OTOH it sucked for pleasure. With the HD2 you get both business and pleasure.
HTC blows blackberry out of the water to me, at least this hd2 does. By that I mean large screen, plenty of themes, apps, etc. Not the same old tired interface as blackberry. It has NO LAG WHATSOEVER. This phone has all my needs met and more.
Only thing about windows is you have to find roms, apps, etc instead of it being in a central location.
I will be using this phone for awhile, t-mobile is crappy in my area so I unlocked to at&t.
I carry a BB Tour and a HD2 right now.
The only two things I like about the BB over the HD2 are the battery life of the BB and the keyboard. I HATE the HD2 on screen keyboard. Even swipe blows.
But if you are anything like me, it's all about the Apps (quality Apps, that is). The HD2 is my media phone, hands down (better than my iPhone). The BB is the work horse and back up music player.

I hate the onscreen keyboard too lol. I have been trying to find another input keyboard that somewhat resembles blackberry.
Actually this HD2 can do it all. Give it a try. I use it for my business and media. I plug my phone up to my car everyday for media and it charges it as well.

Is the HD2 really THAT BAD?!!!

I'm just wondering why people make it seem like this phone is so bad from the factory. It runs MUCH faster than any other Win Mo device and I haven't seen it freeze one time. I have an Android g1 on my other line which runs about as fast as an iphone in my opinion and I've never had any problems with freezing or anything. I got the G1 because I could no longer deal with freezing and resets from Win Mo devices even though I preferred them over droid based on iphone systems. But with this HD2 I'm very pleased. It basically seems to run even faster than my G1 and is better than the Iphone in all ways as far as I'm concerned with the exception of the apps and having to pay for most of what's worth having on a Win Mo phone. And this is without having flashed any roms or adding any 3 part apps which I would usually have done to a Win Mo phone the same day I got it in the past. But the thing is I just got mines this week so maybe what ever issues that may have existed when originally released might have been eliminated by now. Or maybe data/connection issues are based on what area you're in. Sorry, just asking cause I was curious. So what do you guys think?
I think complaints about data are likely location dependent.
I got mine day 2 after launch and it was part of the first dozen the T-Mobile store had in stock. So I got mine out of the "first" batch.
(And for anyone wondering, mine has a "red" reset button.)
I came over to T-Mobile after over a year with a Sprint HTC Touch Pro and the HD2 is way better. And I like being able to use data and voice simultaneously on 3G. Overall I'm happy I made the move to T-Mobile and got the HD2.
I used the stock ROM up till a couple days ago. I did not have any real big issues with the stock ROM. It's just that ROM chefs like NRGZ28 will ALWAYS make something that's better than stock . And with NRGZ28 being a T-Mobile customer with an HD2, I knew his ROM would improve on anything that could be improved. I also used to use his ROMs when I had a CDMA Touch Pro, so I'm familiar with his work.
So with EnergyROM, I'm finding that everything does run faster, but everything was running faster than my old Touch Pro using the stock ROM . And with stock my data and WiFi speeds were "OK", but with EnergyROM I can say they've gotten way faster. The radio on mine is 2.08.50.08_2. I've never flashed a different radio and far as I know EnergyROM does not include a radio. But as usual EnergyROM did improve on something that was already great.
If there were no custom ROMs yet, I would not be complaining, because with stock things were well for me.
If mine were not working well, I guess I'd complain too, but mine works great, so I'm just enjoying.
Mine had been running just fine. The only time I had freezing issues was after I installed spb mobile shell. Other than that it's been fantastic. No freezing, no connection problems. I've used windows mobile devices before and I really don't mind it. I'm coming from a G1 and I love the screen, speed and media options on the HD2. I don't even miss android.
Read the HD2 complaints.
Then look at who is doing the complaining.
Many of your questions will be answered.
Most the people on here that have heavy complaints could actually have a fix, yet just get all pissy about how they used to have a nexus1 or iphone or droid or whatever and never had "this" issue. I'm not one of the masses so I don't just complain, I find a solution then floss my phone to the world.
Fact is, the internet is a haven of complaining. Most people in the "regular world" are using the HTC like butter and have nothing to say. But when we get our chance to shine on the forums, boy will we get on the soapbox trying to get people to not only boycott a phone, but even whole operating systems.
If your phone is a little screwy, GOOD, welcome to the techno age asshole.
I'm getting really tired of people flooding this forum with threads such as this... opinions are NOT important on this website, FACTS are what matter.
And the FACT of the matter is... frequent users of these forums do NOT want to read endless arguments and complaints from folks who are incapable of properly operating a mobile device such as the HD2!
Honestly, it seems like there must be a lot of morons in the United States who have JUST NOW discovered the quality devices that HTC has to offer...
Because, truth be told (again) I haven't experienced ONE, SINGLE, even minor problem at all with my handset. NOT ONE!
I have made countless registry tweaks, installed tons of Manila modifications, and I'm still using the STOCK ROM provided by T-Mobile USA.
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS DEVICE!
Please, feel free to spread the word. Thanks.

Agreed. This is the best, most problem free, and fastest phone I've ever owned.
But this phone has attracted more WM newbies than any other WM device in the past, so we're hearing the problems all these iphone & android users and just alltogether non-techsavvy people are having adjusting to and learning winmo. They don't understand why it isn't dumbed down (and locked down) like the iphone or android.
I think T-Mobile is advertising this phone too much as and entertainment and media phone. This phone is not for everyone. But it most definitely is the most powerful and versatile phone out now.

I could NOT have "agreed" with my opinion any better than you just did here, sir.
Finally, someone to rationalize with... Jesus!
Anyway, for the record... I meant NO disrespect towards those people who legitimately are "noobs" to our community... I'm just having trouble understanding just how it is that so many people are complaining about such a masterpiece.
noobs need to get off the site

everyone wants a phone to be perfect yet no one has a perfect phone there is no such thing as a perfect phone or anything being perfect hd2 is great better then anyother phone ive had came from the iphone and the touch pro2 to the hd2 both the toucch pro2 and the hd2 dont have much different besides the rom and the speed and the screen. those noobs that are on this site need to know that theres no such thing as a perfect phone and if they dont like it go return it its that easy.
The reason why I runs much faster than a G1 or iPhone is because it has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, the fastest processor right now for a mass production cell phone in the US. The iPhone 2G and 3G only run at 412MHz, and the G1 at 528MHz.
Spec vs. Spec, the HD2 blows the iPhone (and G1) out the water, everything is bigger but doesn't always mean it's better. As a previous iPhone user (still have it), I love everything about my HD2 features, it just does things my iPhone can not do and it's jailbroken and heavily modded too.
So is it that bad? No, it's not but I do believe the product was rushed. I've had lots of problems with mine, including the data connection issue. If you read some older post, some of the people from Europe are having issues still that HTC has not care to look into (phone launched last year).
I think people (those who reply so far) and others are quick to turn a blind eye or ignore when people are expressing problems. If your phone is problem free, congratulations, you are very lucky (and we envy you), but to say "THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS DEVICE!" is blantant lie. There are plenty of threads with info, pics and video showing off the fustration members are going through. There are people even make .cab to fix issues that should have never made it to a production phone (IE: Text Message timestap/server time)
Also just because other people haven't step forward or posted on a forum does not mean the phone is working perfectly, you guys gotta realize not everybody has access to the internet or know how to search, register or reply on forums with issues. I have a couple of friends who have the HD2, experincing problems and are far from computer savvy. I ask them if they've heard of 'xda' or 'pocketnow' and it's just blank stares, lol. So like most people do in this case is, call T-mobile. At least T-mobile is NOW finally understanding the issues because a CSR told me today they've been getting numerous complaints and T-mobile is looking into the issue (take it for what its worth).
Look, to be honest, I also think a lot of complaints come from experienced users who are used to the state of the art Flashed ROMs, therefore, any factory ROM is below their standards...I personally hated it because I'm in love with WinMo 6.5.x...doesn't make it horrible, just my preference...though I never "complained" lol...
There are many who will enjoy the HD2 those who have no need to make a phone call usinf wi/fi, those who do not mind the small battery & those who can remove core issues from the micro, it is a very nice phone but from my experience HTC pulled a fast one & I have no use for the HD2

I don't think it was rushed. The problems are no different than any other WinMo device has had in the past. But most people who are WinMo users understand this and come to this forum and together have come up with solutions. A lot of the problems have the same solutions they did on previous devices, so people who know WinMo know how to work around these.
You have to understand that WinMo was not originally designed to be a phone.... it was and is a portable stand-alone version of a windows OS... a full fledged operating system. It has had phone functionality added to it over the years. It is much more versatile and doesn't have the limits that other mobile OS's(ones that were built just to be phones) have. It is a portable computer with phone functionality. The other phone OS's are phones with some portable computing functionality.
T-Mobile is blatantly advertising this powerful, portable computer as a "media phone" and a lot of people who are not technical enough for a device this powerful are getting it expecting it to work like a media device that was designed to be an easy to use phone. That's why I can't completely blame all these newbies... they were thinking they were getting a media phone, but end up with something that's way beyond there level of technical experience. Hopefully T-Mobile will realize this once they get enough complaints and returns and maybe they will stop advertising it as such. But it will take them a while because they are making a killing off of them. But actually, I think the phone may be refined and user friendly enough for most users to get by with it good enough that they are happy with it. Otherwise, T-Mobile would be getting much more returns and complaints than I think they're getting and they would be cutting back on the advertising already. I'm sure most people aren't using the device to it's potential, but it seems most people are happy enough with it to keep and use it. The Sense UI does a pretty decent job at making the interface "phone-like" and user friendly, even though it does have some problems. Personally, I could do without the Sense UI, but that's a whole other post.
@ zarathustrax & @ Raadius: I may not be as savvy as most PC players yet I follow pocketsmart, wmpoweruser, & quite a few more & I realize how short of a time before TMO itself will unlock the HD2 & yes quite a few other ways to do the same but both your threads seem to show you have good reception with no need for UMA (wi/fi ). Now if as I'm learning, is there a way to enable wi/fi to the HD2, since my reception with TMO is terrible & regardless how long I've been following the Leo, I am sad to say I have to return the HD2 unless someone can show me a way to improve my reception. It is sad to say the only way I can find wi/fi is with a smaller screen & kb which is no use to me.
I will go to android if the snapdragon, battery, screen & reception are present.
I've grown through Palm OS into Windows, Android is to me freeware on my Windows OS PC. So again unless noted, I am sad to release my HD2.
I only had the phone for a day and got the sleep of death 4 times having to reset it...and that was without even installing anything on it. On top of that it wouldnt hold 3G and kept flipping between 3G and edge killing the battery off ridiculously fast.

And this is one of the many reasons I switched to Android from winmo. I know people dont mind tweaking their phones and whatnot here.. but some of these things people SHOULD NOT have to do when purchasing a $500 phone. There is no reason winmo phones should STILL be having the sleep of death as long as the 6th version of winmo has been out. There is NO reason they shouldnt have implemented the timestamp/date fix into this thing BEFORE shipping it. There is NO reason the phone should be freezing on the FIRST DAY right out of the box.
I was once a major winmo fan and was pretty anti everything except it. But once I tried Android I realized that having to do all of these tweaks and flashes shouldnt be necessary just to get basic functionality.

Care too share your mods? and registry tweaks?
Just got an HD2, I switched from an IPHONE, I love the device. My only suggestion for those who knock it... figure out what you don't like and try to customize it or tweak it till your happy. Its a Windows device and is 10 times more versatile than an iphone. Also, the ROMS that are available out there are phenominal. Start off with one that is minimal and build away.... I recommend the MIRI ROM with cookies mod.....beautiful!!!
peace...
I don't see how anyone could claim the T-Mobile US HD2 was "rushed" when it took what seems to be forever for the device to even reach the USA to begin with. And the T-Mobile US version has 1024 NAND memory.
All I can say is that I'm happy.
But I don't think you "really" know till like 6 months out when everyone has used a device for a LONG TIME and then we all can say how great or not great it really is. Of course we'll all see something else that catches our eye by then, but longer term use tells an even truer tale. So far though, almost 30 days in and I'm happy.
And yes, custom ROMs make a good device even better.
im a total noob when it comes to win mo phones.... never complained, but i've never been one to really complain..
i just dont like the constant 3G to E switching, but thats a tmobile and location issue.. not an HD2 issue..
I LOVE my HD2!
I don't know why, but it seems since I moved to EnergyROM, that my device stays on 3G more often.

Rooting means getting full permissions to the Android system. If you don't know what Linux permissions are, don't worry about rooting; it won't have any effect on you. People generally do it to modify their phones like replacing certain software or enabling features that aren't officially supported.
No one really knows what all the OTA update covers. It's suspected it adds two features, but that's about all we know. Nonetheless, I can highly recommend the G2, even as your first smartphone. Keep in mind that most people on these forums are overstating problems, so don't listen to everything that's said here. I think short of the iPhone4, the G2 is the best phone you can buy right now. T-Mobile is definitely better than AT&T, so get the G2!
I had the same question, actually. Coming from a long line of WinMo phones myself (TP2 was my last phone, R.I.P) I get that Hard-SLP unlocking and shopping for custom roms is par the course since it's pretty much essential for the optimal WM experience, but coming over to Android and seeing how everyone is really bummed out that this phone can't Root..or at least, doesn't have one that stick, is really confusing, especially since the added "benefits" I've at least read about isn't all 'that' great...
Please excuse my ignorance on the matter, but coming from a mobile platform where modding/hacking is pretty much called for if you even plan to use the darn thing makes everything I'm experiencing from the stock Android a dream compared to its alternative.

What you have to remember is people will hack anything and everything, even if there's no real benefit to it. Back in the days, when G1 first came out, rooting was a big deal because it provided access to such things as apps on sd card, themes, auto-rotation, multi-touch, etc. At this point - you can get it all on stock android. Of course, there's overclocking (unnecessary on this phone), wi-fi tether (if you need it) and some further mods but it is not as critical as it used to be.
With that said... the moment permanent root is found - I'm going for it with the sole reason is because I can! Well... and because I want black notification bar
Temp root has a nice little perk.. you can restart it and it puts it back to factory if you need to have it fixed or replaced.

J327p Galaxy J3 Emerge Virgin: Debloat, custom ROMs and other Questions

L9Hello guys and thanks for having me in your forums. This is my first post, I'm a big fan but I never registered, just lurked and read posts lol.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge J327P from Virgin US, it's rooted using the method listed on this forum for it with TWRP and supersu, but I'd like to kill the bloatware, stop mother fuc*ing Google from always running location services stuff(I'll post screen shots) in running services under developer options, increase my battery life and generally soup up my phone a bit with cool stuff. I'm not some bad ass Hax3r elite script kiddy but the pentest apps have always fascinated me and I've got a few installed and they're helping me learn this old dog a few new things. but I'd also like some more that are ofc not gonna be on app store so if you have any of those as suggestions pls hook me up. Also custom Roms, what's the deal? Do they have any for my phone and what can they help, where do I get and how do I install? Now that I'm rooted does anyone have any suggestions what to do next?
I used to work for Motorola and Nextel back in the day as an entry level wireless engineer straight out of the Army, but that was freaking years ago and I'm pretty out of the loop. That being said I'm not a completely moron and I'm pretty handy with hardware and software and I've written a few apps which are one app store.... But I did that with some help and as a project for online classes I take in my dotage to stay busy. I'm catching on pretty quick here though and i think my experiences and schooling and what not could be a good asset to the underground communities if I take the time to learn.... And Also... well mostly...because Ii really like mobiles and wireless **** fascinates me so hook me up. Feed me knowledge and where to look and learn and I'll donate the 200 or so dinosaur brick sized phones bi have in storage to your museum lol.
thanks guys,
Grandpa (or at least I feel that way right now) catguy

Sorry I can't be of help
Sorry that I have nothing to add on the ROM department, as I'm far less knowledge than yourself and about 98% of the individuals on here (the other 2%, smh. Just wow). The reason for me taking the time to reply is because A) I feel on the trying to teach an old dog new tricks; it takes me 20 minutes looking up what the meaning is of the lingo, then 40 minutes on how to implement it. Ironically I also worked for Sprint/Nextel but mine was the far less glamorous call center job. And totally random, & tbh with myself) none of my business, but I couldn't help but notice your mention about meds and regaurdless if it was one time thing, recent injury, old injury/condition, just whatever the situation look into (if your not familiar with it) mitragyna speciosa (kratom) its all natuarl plant, 100% legal (I think its 2 states miscategorized as a synthetic), its related to the coffee plant, and although its not perfect and not for everyone, its better than any pharmaceutical. There are quite a bit of Vets that are big advocates of this botanical. And sorry it's off topic (like 100%) but it changed my life, so I know it can for others too.

Don't take it personally, for the most part people here don't reply unless they have something constructive to add or say, it keeps the boards from getting flooded.
Since you're rooted I was going to suggest looking into porting, if you can get Lineage 14 running on your device (I have no idea what specs your model has off the top of my head to know what's possible for it) then it would give you a good jumpstart on porting 15 when that's released you could set up a race with the other J3 Devs and see who wins haha.
I seem to remember reading something about that phone too, iirc the article I read had it with a special case with Kevlar weave (which sounds badass on its own), I'll see if I can find any info on it again.
A lot of bloat can be eliminated by creating a nandroid backup (or TWRP if you have it) and taking it out that way, failing that titanium backup will let you get rid of a lot of bloat.
I just picked up a j327p for Sprint yesterday. I immediately wanted to flash Lineage onto it, but everything I'm seeing suggests that's not possible. (I wasn't able to do research before the purchase; it was an emergency replacement).
I found your post because I came here looking for the same information. I haven't flashed recovery onto my device yet, so I may try to return it to the store instead. It sounds like you got TWRP on there okay. Are you just stuck with the OS?
EDIT: there is this thread, which everyone in the universe was probably aware of but me, it just took me a bit to locate it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt/wip-custom-rom-j3-emerge-sm-j327p-t3634206
I built a rom for Sprint / Virgin / Boost check it out
How do you flash a zip from twrp? I know how with Odin but I downloaded one of the custom roms from cad tried to flash without help but the only thing that seemed to change was my xposed wasn't installed anymore I must have done something wrong can someone show me what roms are best and give me instructions for flashing the right way
