Orange UK Panther push email - HD2 General

Hello guys,
I need some advice from someone... was wondering if the "unlimited push email" on Orange panther plans could be used with the HD2?
I'm worried that it might only be for blackberrys.
Does anyone have any experience? Or is it possible to make the HD2 receive push email in the same way as a blackberry?
Thanks,
pkchips.

From what Im aware, the HD2 doesnt do push email, only check the server every X mins.
And the unlimited push email on panther plans applies to blackberries only it seems.

Thanks Midnight.
Do you know if there is any software to make the HD2 receive email like the Blackberry?
I've seen something called Blackberry Connect, but it was too complicated for me to understand. It seems to do push email, but also a whole load of other stuff. If I use that, would it be free?

I actually knew HD2 did push email, but was wondering if the orange thingy would include the wm style of doing it? Is it possible to get email in the same way as a blackberry would, just to be safe?

I'm just loving the directpush technology....its just amazing! I guess its goodbye RIM....wonder how bberry is going to differenciate....!
The battery life is phenomenal....a whole day of use with direct push enabled and gprs always on, my battery is down to just 53%.....mind blowing!
way to go!

I agree, Direct Push is pretty good and I've heard whispers in my company that we might be rolling it out in the near future.
however you said a day's worth of use brings it down to 53%.
This seems a bit heavy to be honest, I've had use of a blackberry for a few weeks and i'm pretty sure it didnt drain as fast as that.
Overall though I'm very happy with the new functionality.

I have a doubt about the push mail configuration. If you select to syncronize when "as items arrive" it asks for a for a delivery address information for the device, do you know which is this address? I suppose is related to sms, but I don't know and asked vodafone, they didn't know what to say.

It sounds like you are talking about the old system - I.e. Where it required an sms address and then the servered sent you a hidden sms which your phone used as a trigger to sync with the server. (I never bothered trying to get that set up because I can't see the point in paying 10p for the sms + the data charge just to each email more tha every 5 minutes.
Direct push on the other-hand is supposed to work by your device creating a secure http connection to the server, which is kept open on both sides, but no data is sent until a message arrives at the exchange, at which point it is transmitted down this connection. This completely cuts out the sms.
I can't wait till O2 release a new rom with the direct push stuff - it may be worth going with the jasjar rom just to get it.
Cheers

I'm sorry asking again about this question but in order to have clear idea, do you mind to put same mail address in the request of "delivery address" as you have for exchange?
thanks.
You do not put anything in for the address - this is for systems using pre SP2 push technology or systems that will not allow an incoming connection and wish to continue to use the AUTD (or auto up to date) system. This involves the exhange system sending an email to an address that then sends an SMS to your device - this then initiates the sync.
SP2 push, as stated before relies on a persistent HTTP(S) connection to the exchange server.
Try it without anything in the address field and see if it works - if not then check that the exchange system you are accessing has been set up to take advantage of the new push update technology.

For those of you whose mail servers dont have ms exchange, you can use a free trial with 4smartphone.net for 15 days and hook it up to any of your email accounts. Works like a charm! (thanks Carnivor for suggesting 4smartphone!)

It's a good idea except for people like me that our corporate exchange has a rule that doesn't support to forward messages automatically outside.
does it mean the client device has to be always connected to the internet? (through any connections: GPRS. wifi, dial up). I thought it should work even its not connected sometimes?

I experienced the opposite. Since mine upgraded, I have poor battery life. Not sure why. My device is now very fast. But battery life is decreased.
From 8 -12, only with phone and BT on, the battery drops to 50%.
I also noticed that the BT connection drops once in a while. So far I had about 5 times drop for thepast week.

Yes, you have to be connected to the internet in some manner for it to work. However, when you use GPRS to stay connected, it doesnt drain your battery to the magnitude you'd expect. Thats because MS has implemented a new way of sending out data, and the battery drains only when it does heavy transfer (which is not the case). Also, a whole day of usage has costed me just 180KB for heartbeat only (i subtracted the mail sizes approximately...)
Its an excellent solution in my regard! I sent a few test mails from my laptop, and i was astonished to see them arrive within 5-10 seconds after the mail was sent! I guess its flawless
Cheers!

i have found the direct push a charm, i am using about 1mb per day. battery drain is no worse. i normally get the email on my pda before outlook picks the mail up
Paul
Is there any documentation about the Push email technollogy? Manual? do i need to have a exchange server in order to be able to use Push mail, or can it be done using my proviser's email server?

I just reall don't see what all the fuss is about. If I buy a blackberry I can get push email by adding on the £12.77/mth instant email package.
If I want to do it on my Exec, I have to have £700 Exchange or similar configured on a server, and pay someone a monthly fee for exchange hosting on top of that (I think?)...?
I work in O2 sales, and they were training us in the update the other day, but the vast majority of our SME customers won't have Exchange + Win Server. To be honest, it makes more sense to simply check your email every 10 minutes automatically for most people...
Am I way off base here, am I missing something??
i have exchange and windows server.
i want push email as it will simply alert me when an email hits my inbox and i dont need to watse time connecting and checking all day

Most people don't have exchange and server running though.... and there's no wasting time involved in setting your exec once to check mail automatically on a set schedule.
I just think too many people are getting excited over this for nothing.
I'd have said that A2DP was more important for most.
@belfast biker,
I'm with you. I was an IT Manager (as well as a Management Consultant) a few years ago with a small company. The Consultants wanted Black Berry devices with Push email. I said it was not worthwhile (even though we did use MS Exchange, a Black Berry server would have been another £2500) and so I set-up email downloads on their mobile phones and told them to check their emails when they had a spare moment. Guess what, most very happy with this solution as they did not to start their laptops and look for a dial-up point etc.
I used to have a blackberry. Its actually a great device in corporate mode, useless for personal (as it does not let you manage your main email acc, you have to set up an account with a provider so its a whole hassle). The main reason that push email is great is that, on the blackberry, you do nothing. then when email comes a green light flashes. You just brush a button and it shows you the subject. If you want to see the first few lines you just click another key, all instantaneous. If you want to see the whole email you click to download + attachments. I would love to have this facility on the universal. I expect that like the blackberry service providers will eventually offer a personal service (i.e. no BES or exchange server needed).
I'm quite happy with web based email on the universal however. I refused a blackberry from my company as I don't want to be working at 5 in the morning ...

emoze.com offering free push email...any tried this yet?

www.emoze.com has just come up with a push email feature for mobiles and pdas.
i just wanted to know if anyone has tried out the service and how is it?
i don't have an outlook exchange server so i can't really set up direct push on my 8125.
I just checked and Emoze does not support the Qtek 9100 yet
try selecting the Tmo MDA.. same thing.. i'm downloading the program now to see if it works..
ok, stay away from it for now, it is in beta, but here's what happened to me..
1. it replicated my contacts about 40 times.. i had to go thru and delete duplicates... ugh..
2. Program on the PC desktop crashes randomly, it crashed 4 times in a 30 minute period..
3. kinda flaky performance.. it works as in the push email function, it notifies you, but then it took 3-4 trys on the PPC to get out of the notification/program and see the actual email in outlook..
give it time and if they perfect it a little, this will be very cool to have..

Cool, thanks for the input. Hopefully they'll fix the bugs soon so we can use it.
replicated my contacts also, it states that you cannot have activesync running while this program is running, which is kinda ridiculous...another thing is, it runs OFF of your computer, uses your OUTLOOK, nothing on their end, its just a piece of software...in other words, if your computer is off, no email....useless if you ask me
Ya know, it's a shame the T-Mobile's SMS-based notification feature isn't a bit better tuned. It really works well - just takes to long to notify your phone of a new event.
For anyone who hasn't tried it. When you go to the T-Mobile website, you can put in the info for one or more of your non-T-Mobile email services. You can use POP3 or IMAP4 servers along with your SMTP server, and you specify your email login and password.
After that, you can click on the feature in your MDA that retrieves specs for your email account from T-Mobile's servers, and pocket Outlook will set up an appropriate additional account for you in the MDA. With this all set up, you can, in addition to your normal way of checking your email, check your email account via the T-Mobile website or via your MDA simply by doing a Send/Receive on the MDA in the Messaging app.
The neat part that T-Mobile hasn't quite implemented 100% is that you can have their server monitor your email account for new incoming messages, and in turn send a "silent SMS" to your MDA to let it know when new email has arrived. Then your MDA automatically kicks off a Send/Receive, fetches whatever email is waiting on the server and notifies you.
This works quite well. The ONLY problem is that that it may take way too long for you to be notified that something new is on the server. This could be due to one (or both) of two possibilities:
1) T-Mobile's back-end servers may not be monitoring and checking your email server frequently enough. If it checks for new email every minute, that's great - but if it waits 30 minutes between checks, that's about the best you can hope for when waiting for your MDA to be notified about new incoming mail.
2) Even if T-Mobile's back-end servers "know" that your email provider's servers have new mail for you once a minute, that only helps if the "daemon" (or whatever process they use) sends the "silent SMS" to you immediately. If the "silent SMS" is queued up, and the process to send them out is delayed, or possibly scheduled to happen once every 30 minutes, we have yet another way in which it takes too long for your phone to be notified that new email has arrived.
Whichever delay is causing this, it would be fantastic if T-Mobile could fix it. If they did, this would, functionally, serve the purpose of push email for many of us -- especially for those of us who have unlimited messaging as part of our plan with T-Mobile.
despite the bugs, it worked great, and i'm gonna keep an eye on their progress..
This is basically the program i've been looking for. Something that I can load on my own PC (since it's on 24/7) and have it sync my inboxes on my 8125.. it was nearly instantaneous when it worked on my system..
a note to people that want to try this though...
1. BACKUP YOUR CONTACTS!!!!
2. Make sure ActiveSync is set to not sync anything, and turned off.
3. Then run the program..
I wish it was more stable, and i'd use it all the time, but until then, im sticking with POP updating every 2 minutes..
I can't get it to work on my PC in my office. My company uses a proxy server and the desktop app can't connect to the internet. Any suggestions?
not really sure.. but keep an eye on this thread from their forums, the emoze team might respond with an answer..

I think they started push service in their "live.web2mail" bbeta but I could be mistaken as I have not tried it. Even if it free it wont be for long as MS has pretty expensive licensing fees per user to use exchange server. I think they have 6 months where they can claim 0 users. The emoze you need your home pc on all the time. For me it would be ok cuz i always keep my pc turned on but for a lot of people i dont think they do that.
Any news on this? Is it working yet? I keep my computer on all the time and was looking at running Exchange Server from it to get Push Email, but maybe I'm better off waiting for this?
I've been using a mail3web live account for a couple of weeks and it works very well. I just had to set up mail forawrding from my own ISP. I'm pretty sure it's not push email but it works fine through active sync on the PPC as long as I remember not to kill the application. You can set it to synch with the sever as often as you like and as I'm a bit worried about getting a large bill and I'm not too wooried about getting everything instantaniously I've set mine to synch with the server every two hours. If I want to check more frequently I just hit send/receive.
Dave
Whoops - no I haven't discovered a new one! The above should read mail2web live account!

There's no tweak. mail2web just upgraded to Exchange SP2, so if you've got a ROM in your wizard that supports push (I'm using the 2.17 custom on my TMO MDA), sign up for a free mail2web account, forward your email there from other accounts, and follow the diretions to set it up on your Wizard, and you will get true push email now.
The only problem I have is that I forward my gmail to my mail2web, and once or twice/day I notice I'm not getting e-mail, sign in to my gmail account and under the forward it says gmail is having trouble forwarding to that account. I push try again, and it starts sending my email again for maybe a day. I think mail2web is either having a problem receiving so much mail (there's been a big buzz about it on xda and howard last few weeks), or else it might be a problem with their spam filters...
MC
thanx for ur reply...that's exactly what i did and got a gmail account too and everything's ok here...all my mails are directed to my mail2web account ( actually live.mail2web.com account)
But can not succeed in push to mail...my rom is the "test only" one I think it's the one before the official 2.17....Any chance to get it work though?
Many thanx...

Anyone got an Exchange Hosting guide?

For push email, looks like I'll be using one of the exchange hostsing services:
1&1
Option 1: 69p/mth for "Instant Email"
"1&1 Instant Mail gives you 5 dedicated POP3/IMAP e-mail accounts to create [email protected]. Send and receive e-mail from any Internet - connected computer."
Option 2: £5.99/mth for "Microsoft Exchange"
"Experience the benefits of seamless communication and collaboration with Microsoft Exchange. Use Outlook to send and receive e-mail from any Internet-connected computer."
4SmartPhone.Net
Option 1: $3.99 for "Express"
Includes Push Email, Wireless Sync, OWA: Outlook Web Access
Option 2: $6.99 for "Professional"
As above plus Outlook 2003 support, Sharing of email, contacts, calendar and tasks
Mail2Web
Option 1: FREE - Pop3, IMAP4 or SMTP not supported (huh???)
Option 2: $1.99 for "Personal Exchange"
"With our Enhanced Email plan, based on Microsoft Exchange, you are never far from your email, contact, schedule and other personal information. It’s all available from either your desktop, the web, as well as any Windows-powered mobile devices as Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition and Microsoft Windows®-powered Smartphones. Get information as it arrives where ever you may be.
Microsoft Exchange is much more than an email solution - it's a complete messaging solution that goes way beyond email to provide calendars, task management, contact lists, advanced rules for sorting your messages and much more.
Previously this solution was only available to businesses but we have developed a special version with the individual in mind. Now you can get your own Personal Exchange account on the mail2web.com domain."
OK, now I'm confused...
What exactly does everyone else use, and how much does it cost, what option and what does it give you?
looks like very attractive services, wonder if anyone has had a few months using these services, and can comment on the reliability etc.
Always a bit weary of hosted services, had dropped emails from hosted services in the past!
I was going to go with 1&1 however, it seems to me as though I have to pay for six months up front.

I've went for the $6.99 a month (but a year upfront after the fifteen day trial) 4smartphone.net service. So far, so excellent!
Does it include the Universal client or are you using a new ROM?
There isn't a client as such as the functionality is already built into ALL of the Roms.
The main difference is the existing ROMs may not have the push functionality that a lot of people are waiting for.
I used smartphone during the trial on my original O2 ROM, this meant an SMS being sent to my device everytime I got a new message, however once I got hold of a ROM with push technology, I tested it with an Exchange Beta and it just worked out of the box - I suspect the same will be the case for 4smartphone.

I tend to judge a company by how they handle things like this - any company is good when things work, but when things go wrong it's good to know you'll not be left up the creek without a paddle.
Top marks. Will definitely be buying the years service after the 15 day trial.

Yup, in Business Sales. I've to give a training session in Data tomorrow - group shared tariffs, personal tariffs, GPRS/3G/Wifi, BlackBerry vs. XDA, Email vs. Push Email, that kinda thing. Having done all this at the weekend will help me - otherwise I'd be telling them to tell our customers that if they want Push Email on the XDA IQ, they'd have to invest in Server 2003, Exchange etc etc.... at least this way, you do without all those capital costs and do it for just £4 per month to 4smartphone.net, plus minor data costs. Although I'd not recommend the process to normal humans.

IMAP Pusher Service

Does anyone know if this programs runs on htc touch hd?

I will runs quite well. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now with my gmail account and only bug is that it gives an error message after soft reset, but nothing major. All in all i've been satisfied with the program.
Seven works very well also:

or alternatively you could just set the native email client to check for mail every minute if you have an unlimited web package (joke)
Edit: I can confirm that the program you linked to in the first post does indeed work on the Touch HD - just tried it successfully myself!
I just downloaded this, but before I install it, I was wondering: Can this be configured for multiple accounts?
Thanks!

Hmm. The most frequent option I'm given on my Touch Pro is every 5 minutes...
The programmer of the application you have referred has "disappeared" for quite some time. Webis do a full email client that supports IMAP Push without any other add-on, however it is not a solution if you want to use the inbuilt mail program.
An alternative that is I use now is Mail2web, which has a completely free option and is based on microsoft exchange, allowing you to use the "proper" email push service. Simply forward all your emails to that account.
