I just tried to plug my phone in today, and activesync does not detect my phone when I plug it in.... Activesync usually works great for me.
So far I have tried:
1. soft reset phone
2. attach wife's phone - still no sync (this leads me to believe it is a problem on the PC - not the phone)
3. remove and re-install activesync on the pc
4. restart the PC
The USB connection is definitely being made - as when I plug the phone into the computer it starts charging the battery..... but no activesync session is initiated, so I can't modify any files on my phone....
any other ideas?
Hmm that is bad... Well what do you use activesync for? Transferring files or for internet sharing?
All I can think of is maybe a virus? Run avast! virus cleaner. It's the stand alone virus cleaner not the actual anti-virus program. It won't install anything on your pc and it's actually one of the best. Just go to Avast.com.
If you use activesync for internet sharing you actually don't need it . I don't use it for internet sharing. You just need the drivers. I use wm5torage to put stuff of my memory card.
Hope something I wrote helped.
Uncheck start>settings>connections>usb to pc.
never mind........ I guess my data cable just went retarded.
I bought a new USB>MiniUSB cable today and activesync loads right up.
strange, since the original cable does not look like it is damaged at all, and can still charge the phone.
Oh well - all's well that ends well. lol.

i bit late to the party,me ,but this is a comon problem in certain devices,so far i changed 4 cables with my hermes.
oh well. good to know anyway.
I work as a manager at a retail store, and found a couple of PSP data cables (the exact same cable that HTC phones use, surprisingly) that were in the back room which clearanced to 10 cents.... I bought them out - so I have a TON of backup cables in case I ever need them. LOL
the problem is not the usb cable per say but the usb hub in the device.
the new htc hub since the Hermes have a low threshold for wear, the pins that is, so when your usb cable gets used for awhile it wears out a bit also, this gets to a certain stage the the pins no longer touch each other therefore this problem occurs .
i have noticed that my wife 3 year old wizard has a standard usb plug and we never had any problem with any cables, even using the cables that do not work in the hemes that started showing that problem after 6 months of usage.
yeah - well maybe I'll be lucky and the cables I bought (from the PSP) don't have this wear and tear problem
since a few weeks, i've got a very strange problem with my blackstone.
when i connect the usb cable to my phone and the pc, it don't asks me anymore wether i want to connect it as a harddisk drive or do active sync. it's also impossible to do active sync by usb since this moment. i already tried everything in the blackstone USB2PC settings, like disabling fast synchronising, deactive/active the USB2PC pop-up and so on...
what i found out yesterday is the following:
because i did a hard reset, i didn't had any contacts on my phone, so i tried to active sync over bluetooth. that worked perfectly and after the synchronizing was finished, the USB connection worked again, but only for a few minutes. afterwards i had the same problem again. nothing happened when i connected the USB cable. i was able to do the same thing again: synchronize by bluetooth, connect USB cable and it worked again for a few minutes. unfortunately i wasn't able to flash hardspl during this time period. it found the phones bootloader version, but when i wanted to start the flashing process, it said that it can't estalish a connection to the phone (tricolo bottsreen has been started and progressbar was visible, but on 0%)
i also tried it on 3 different pc's with 2 different USB cables...
normaly i would say now, that my blackstone has a defect due to the fact that i did a hard reset and it's still not working, but how is it possible that it works for a few minutes after synchonizing by bluetooth?
does anyone has an idea??? i don't want to give away my lovely blackstone for warranty
btw. is there any possibility to flash a new rom without using the usb cable? even with the soft spl method i've found, you have to use the cable even if the rom itself is flashed from the sd card...
Black Stone usb device picking as "unknown device"
i am also having the same problem please help me
Maybe i'm having a similar issue:
My HD is not recognized anymore via USB Cable. I tried different computers with different Windows Versions. (7, Vista, XP)... No Connection anymore.
Bluetooth Connection works!
I did follow all suggestions... nothing works.
Could it be, that i flashed my HD too much? Is it broken now?

Yes, checked every of the common suggestions given in this situation.
Could it be a hardware fault?
As i told, it doesn't work on any PC! Feels like Touch HD's mini USB port is dead. Strange thing ist, that it says chargin when connection the cable. But no other reaction than charging.
is there still no solution for this problem?
i already found like 20 people now with the same problem, posting in several different threads. seems like this really is a big problem of the blackstone...
I had this problem with Duttys rom afgter plugging my HD into works pc to use internet sharing.I had to do a hard reset to sort it out sorry ts not much help but its the only way i sorted it after buying 3 new leads!
Using the stock ROM 1.14, never ever flashed a ROM. However, for a few days, I have been unable to connect my Blackstone with Windows Mobile Center (OS = Windows Vista SP1), it just fails with an (unspecified) error. I can only connect my device as a disk drive, not via ActiveSync anymore. It used to work before.
I am currently investigating whether or not the recent firewall upgrade (to Norton 360 3.0) on my computer may be the root of the problem. I'll keep you informed...
EDIT: performed an uninstall of the Windows Mobile Device Center, restarted the computer, re-installed the WMDC using the HTC CD provided with my Blackstone -> voilà, it works again
EDIT2: probably my problem was not related with the ones described here above, but who knows, maybe it will help others ...
i also hv the same problem

I already have Blackstone. Maybe You already checked Settings\Connections\USB to PC location. There is "Ask me first about USB connection type...". If my understaning is good then here must be this checkbox set to checked.
Second thing for those users who cannot use syncing only : I had and antivirus program and it has personal firewall. When I turned OFF antivirus protection and the firewall protection then the Windows Modile Device Center start working without any problems with Active sync in my phone.

Interesting, I did a sync last night and today, I can't do it!
But if I use the phone as a modem for Internet, my blackstone connects without problem through cable.
Wich is the mystery?

I solved the problem. It seems that the ROM version was the problem for me:
ROM: BS_Cloudy_1.9
RADIO: 1.14.25.24
Manila: 2.5.20121225.2
I solved using "Clear Storage." After reset, reverting to original settings (original settings actually were, because I put this ROM only for two days), I was able to connect to the PC and was able to flesh another ROM
I hope that this ROM is more stable.
Hi guis, I have de same problem with usb connection, I would to send my blackstone to assistance but i have to instal first the original spl!
Is possible to restore it trough memory card and non trough usb??

Hi all,
I had my set flashed to wm6.5 by Keyzx and it is wonderful.
Lately when I tried sync it with my computer and laptop, winxp detected it as unknown device and activesync shows that it is not connected at all with no partnership with the ipaq.
I was wondering if the USB port which is faulty but I can still see the ipaq is charging when it is plugged into the usb port. I had tried downgrade the WM to 6.1 but still no vail. I did changed several usb cables but still nothing. Anyone facing the same problem? Can anyone give any valuable pointers on this issue?
I had tried hard reset, soft reset and many more but it seems like not working.
sometime it happen but usually can be fixed by soft-reset or reboot of your own comp
Hi Keyx,
I am a big fan of your ROM and thanks for the advice.
This is not the first day that this happen but it had been like this almost 2 to 3 weeks now. I had tried soft reset, hard reset and restart of pc but it wouldnt detect the 612c. I was wondering if there is anyway for me to restore the rom back to the original and reflash it back to your cooked rom... as I do love the cool interface.
Sorry to bother you but I do hope you can guide me on this.
Regards,
Lee
ya i think there is stock hp rom somewhere in the forum which you can flash through sd or dnw, one can be found here
The same thing happened to me. I tried different computers, USB cables, uninstall/reinstall activesync, changing ROMs and nothing worked. The problem is the mini USB connector is very fragile. Your connector is most likely broken. I hope you have a warranty. I'm on my third unit due to the connector. The first one quit charging all together and the second one did the same as yours - charge only no sync.
in the very worst case you could live with bluetooth activesync if the connecter is really broken

Excellent way to troubleshoot keyx. That is so obvious it never occurred to me... I wish I would have done that before I returned the phone.
Yes, I guess that is the only way to activesync right now... using the bluetooth. I believe my usb connector is not functioning anymore as I had the original rom flashed on my phone and I still cant detect it on my laptop and desktop.
Thanks all for the information and its very helpful.
Hi all,
Just picked up a second hand Touch HD on Orange, I want to Hard SPL it and flash with a custom rom but my Win 7 laptop will not see the phone when connected via Windows Mobile Device Centre, either as active sync or disc drive...everything works fine with my Xperia though.
Any idea's the reason behind this. I had no disc with the phone so do I need specific drivers for it even though my Xperia worked with the native Win 7 drivers...I've googled my problem but have not found a solution...please help
Are you using the correct USB cable? The one supplied by HTC is slightly different from the standard cable.
If I use a normal USB cable, the one from my camera or Blackberry for instance, it will charge from the laptop, but that's all. To sync and charge properly needs the HTC cable with the slightly different mini-USB end.
Cheers
Dazza
have you tried a hard reset? sounds like whoever had the phone b4 you was playing with the notification queue
Cheer guys, but have hard reset and am using the cable that came with the phone but still no joy on both my home machine (Win 7) or my works one (XP).
Don't know what to do next

I've got about 1/2 a doz usb cables that I have used for 6 months....ANY usb cable will work.
My HD has only just stopped being recognized in the last 2 days. I loaded W7 on my laptop 2 weeks ago and it recognized up until a few days ago. I suspect it's from some update that I've done.
Sammy
Try uninstalling activesync and reinstalling it again on the XP computer. That's worked for me in the past. If that works, you'll at least know it's not the phone or usb cable.
Not sure about W7 yet but I'll post something if I figure it out
Sammy

Have just ordered a genuine HTC HD data cable to see if it is the actual problem. It seems strange it won't sync on either XP or Win 7 yet does charge when plugged in.
The cable does show signs of slight damage as I can see some of the sliver wire exposed at the mini usb side. Am hoping it's this or I've got a knackered port on my phone

Yep, have disabled everything but still no joy
Are there any HTC drivers that I need to install or should it just recognize the phone when I plug it in???
Start > System > ActiveSync > Menu > Connections
In this menu, check "synchronize all PCs using this connection" if unchecked.
And what got me going today (had forgotten this one)
On the Touch HD
Start - Settings - Connections - USB to PC
Check Activesync and uncheck "enable faster data synchronisation"
Spent a couple of hours trying to connect before I did this.
Hope this works for you.

Andrew

If you can see wires on your cable, that's a good sign at least. If the cable is damaged, that's much cheaper than fixing your phone.
Do you know anyone with another cable you can test with while you wait? Any mini usb will suffice. There's nothing special about the HTC one (except maybe a steeper price)
Good luck

I've got a genuine cable being delivered either tomorrow or wednesday, it only cost me £5 so no problem there...the only thing that now worries me is you saying there's nothing special about the HTC one...I've tried 4 different cables and all they do is to charge the phone from the pc but not sync it, this is both at home on Win 7 and in work on XP...a damaged phone springs to mind now
I had the same problem. Try going into bootloader (switch off phone, press on-switch and volume 'down' at the same time) and then connecting your usb. After a few seconds it should change from 'serial' to 'usb'. Mine wouldn't even do that so I logged a call with HTC. It was a hardware fault. They replaced the motherboard and I had the phone back in 7 days.

Have tried as you said...all it states is serial, no sign of usb
Am fearing the worst in that phone may be damaged and as it was bought second hand I have no receipt or idea of how old it is and whether returning it to HTC for fixing is possible.
My last hope is when my genuine HTC cable arrives tomorrow, even though I know deep down it won't work from what you guys have said, I'm deeply hoping that as the mini usb connection is slightly different on the phone to other mini usb ports that it might work, otherwise...that'll teach me for buying second hand
I had the same problem where my pc wouldn't recognize my HD, i tired the HTC usb cable and about 4 different mini usb cables and 4 computer. Done a hard reset, tried reinstalling active sync...basically anything and everything. In the end i took it back to CPW who sent it back to HTC and they replaced the motherboard.

Thanks guys for all your help and advice...I don't think there's anymore I can do other than get use to the phone the way it is or try and sell it on ebay obviously declaring the sync issue...to 'Joe Average' it may not be as big an issue than it is to me.
Weird problem - when I plug my phone into my PC via the USB cable, it charges (i can see the red light and the plug in icon) but the PC via WMDC doesnt see it. Nor can I see it when I view Computer. I have since did a factory HD2 reset and also uninstalled WMDC (twice) and reinstalled. Anyone know what the prob here is or how to fix? Thanks.
Have you flashed any ROMs recently? I had this problem when I flashed a new ROM. My front USB ports were very slow, I don't even think they're 2.0 half the time as Windows tells me to plug stuff in faster ports but, to solve your problem I think you need to change how your phone acts when connected via USB to PC.
Go to Settings, Other and USB to PC and make sure its set to ActiveSync.

That's not a solution it's a workaround and a crap one at that because all it is doing is disabling the usb rndis driver in favour of the much older and slower usb serial driver

I had this problem with my leo all last week. Then i went to my brothers place for thursday through saturday and had the same problem on his pc which runs windows xp pro sp3 (mine is windows 7 pro).
Turns out it was the phone itself. There seemed to be a problem with the tcpip stack, the rndis driver or the tcpip cache. Not sure which but a hard reset solved it and now everything is fine. Although thinking about it i only got the problem after enabling the tcpip cache tweak in bsbtweaks 1.6....... curious!
Don't plug your phone to the front usb, instead plug it to the usb ports on the back of your computer which directly goes to the m/b.
Flashing new ROMS has nothing to do with this phenomenon.
Bad USB cable or bad usb port could sometimes cause this, too.
I have not flashed the ROM at all w this phone. I did do 2 hard Leo resets but still have the problem. Running Win 7 Pro, checked the USB settings on the phone and its all good. USB plugged into the back of the PC and have tried multiple ports. Dang. Any ideas?
I had the same problem, I tried to connect it to several other PCs with no success, at the end hard reset solved it...
if a hard rest doesn;t fix it then task 29 the phone and reinstall the rom

Sorry mate but your wrong. The PC is fine. It is actually the phone that is at fault.
My experiences last week prove this and with no modification to my PC but only a hard rest on the phone everything is now working fine. The same with my brothers machine. No modifications made to it just my phone and that works fine now too.
Both PC's are completely different including the operating system yet both displayed the same problem last week and both now work fine with only the phone being worked on. Combine this with the other comments here that confirm this and you still think the pc is at fault? i'd like to see some proof or some form of methodology.
Although i personally had never seen this problem before over the many winmo devices i've had i'm pretty confident that my IT systems diagnostics training is serving me well here but if you can prove otherwise i'll gladly admit i'm wrong.
sorry for the newbie question but how do you hard reset? i know how to soft reset via "clear storage". i don't have access to the manual right now. out of office.

using clear storage is performinf the software version of a hard reset. it's not a soft reset.
the prefered way of performing a hard reset is to hold down both volume keys (make sure you do it firmly so both make contact) and then quickly tap the power button (do no hold it down at all) then hold the volume buttons until you see a warning. the rest will be obvious (printed on the phone screen)

Sorry mate, *perhaps* your IT systems diagnostics training is serving you most complicated solutions, whereas *maybe* there's more simple solutions : (1)check if there's a firewall program running that block the phone's RNDIS driver to be "seen" by the PC, or (2)a case of bad USB cable, and then (3)your *methodology-proven* trouble-shooting method.
I can say that because it happened to me, where after I take care of the firewall program, the phone gets detected immediately.
Cheers, mate.

First, most modern firewall programs actually have application detection and notifiction systems. Now in cases where the rndis connection has been working and no modifications have been made software wise this is instantly ruled out. In your case i would look at replacing your firewall with something a little better
Next, (and we will use my personal case for this as i'm sure it will be global for this thread) i have one usb cable for my leo - one - and considering, as i said above, after i hard reset and using the very same cable as before i have proven it to work. so moving on.
my method of testing is a pretty standard method. The training is only of any use for tracking the fault diagnosis. Being able to this do allows for an accurate analysis of what is going on at each stage of the connection process.
Seeing as the op has hard reset the device we will see if it is really the PC or not. i'm positive it is the phone that is not working correctly in this case but we will soon see.
Interestingly I have two notebooks, one for work one for home both run WIN7 Pro (Work one is a SOA standard operating architecture). My work notebook did see my HD2 for a while then stopped, my home notebook still syncs without an issue using the same cable. I can only assume by proccess of elimination that it is not the HD2 and that the problem lies with something on my Work notebook.
SOLVED: It was the stupid cable. I did a factory hard reset and plugged in. No dice. Do I grabbed my spare cable and presto. Fired up immediately. Thanks everyone.
