PC doesn't recognize Touch HD (Blackstone) - Touch HD General

Hi all,
Just picked up a second hand Touch HD on Orange, I want to Hard SPL it and flash with a custom rom but my Win 7 laptop will not see the phone when connected via Windows Mobile Device Centre, either as active sync or disc drive...everything works fine with my Xperia though.
Any idea's the reason behind this. I had no disc with the phone so do I need specific drivers for it even though my Xperia worked with the native Win 7 drivers...I've googled my problem but have not found a solution...please help

Are you using the correct USB cable? The one supplied by HTC is slightly different from the standard cable.
If I use a normal USB cable, the one from my camera or Blackberry for instance, it will charge from the laptop, but that's all. To sync and charge properly needs the HTC cable with the slightly different mini-USB end.
Cheers
Dazza

have you tried a hard reset? sounds like whoever had the phone b4 you was playing with the notification queue

Cheer guys, but have hard reset and am using the cable that came with the phone but still no joy on both my home machine (Win 7) or my works one (XP).
Don't know what to do next

Sorry Dazza but that information is incorrect.....
I've got about 1/2 a doz usb cables that I have used for 6 months....ANY usb cable will work.
My HD has only just stopped being recognized in the last 2 days. I loaded W7 on my laptop 2 weeks ago and it recognized up until a few days ago. I suspect it's from some update that I've done.
Sammy

Try uninstalling activesync and reinstalling it again on the XP computer. That's worked for me in the past. If that works, you'll at least know it's not the phone or usb cable.
Not sure about W7 yet but I'll post something if I figure it out
Sammy
EDIT - This is where I'm currently searching

I uninstalled windows mobile sync centre on my W7 computer and reinstalled it.
Works fine now.

Have just ordered a genuine HTC HD data cable to see if it is the actual problem. It seems strange it won't sync on either XP or Win 7 yet does charge when plugged in.
The cable does show signs of slight damage as I can see some of the sliver wire exposed at the mini usb side. Am hoping it's this or I've got a knackered port on my phone

Have you disabled all firewalls and tried connecting?

Yep, have disabled everything but still no joy
Are there any HTC drivers that I need to install or should it just recognize the phone when I plug it in???

Start > System > ActiveSync > Menu > Connections
In this menu, check "synchronize all PCs using this connection" if unchecked.

And what got me going today (had forgotten this one)
On the Touch HD
Start - Settings - Connections - USB to PC
Check Activesync and uncheck "enable faster data synchronisation"
Spent a couple of hours trying to connect before I did this.
Hope this works for you.

Andrew

Thanks for your help guys but still no joy...am waiting on a genuine HTC usb cable to see if that's the problem as the one I have am hoping is faulty, otherwise it's my phone

If you can see wires on your cable, that's a good sign at least. If the cable is damaged, that's much cheaper than fixing your phone.
Do you know anyone with another cable you can test with while you wait? Any mini usb will suffice. There's nothing special about the HTC one (except maybe a steeper price)
Good luck

I've got a genuine cable being delivered either tomorrow or wednesday, it only cost me £5 so no problem there...the only thing that now worries me is you saying there's nothing special about the HTC one...I've tried 4 different cables and all they do is to charge the phone from the pc but not sync it, this is both at home on Win 7 and in work on XP...a damaged phone springs to mind now

I had the same problem. Try going into bootloader (switch off phone, press on-switch and volume 'down' at the same time) and then connecting your usb. After a few seconds it should change from 'serial' to 'usb'. Mine wouldn't even do that so I logged a call with HTC. It was a hardware fault. They replaced the motherboard and I had the phone back in 7 days.

Have tried as you said...all it states is serial, no sign of usb
Am fearing the worst in that phone may be damaged and as it was bought second hand I have no receipt or idea of how old it is and whether returning it to HTC for fixing is possible.
My last hope is when my genuine HTC cable arrives tomorrow, even though I know deep down it won't work from what you guys have said, I'm deeply hoping that as the mini usb connection is slightly different on the phone to other mini usb ports that it might work, otherwise...that'll teach me for buying second hand

I had the same problem where my pc wouldn't recognize my HD, i tired the HTC usb cable and about 4 different mini usb cables and 4 computer. Done a hard reset, tried reinstalling active sync...basically anything and everything. In the end i took it back to CPW who sent it back to HTC and they replaced the motherboard.

Thanks guys for all your help and advice...I don't think there's anymore I can do other than get use to the phone the way it is or try and sell it on ebay obviously declaring the sync issue...to 'Joe Average' it may not be as big an issue than it is to me.

Serious problem.... NO ACTIVESYNC

I just tried to plug my phone in today, and activesync does not detect my phone when I plug it in.... Activesync usually works great for me.
So far I have tried:
1. soft reset phone
2. attach wife's phone - still no sync (this leads me to believe it is a problem on the PC - not the phone)
3. remove and re-install activesync on the pc
4. restart the PC
The USB connection is definitely being made - as when I plug the phone into the computer it starts charging the battery..... but no activesync session is initiated, so I can't modify any files on my phone....
any other ideas?
Hmm that is bad... Well what do you use activesync for? Transferring files or for internet sharing?
All I can think of is maybe a virus? Run avast! virus cleaner. It's the stand alone virus cleaner not the actual anti-virus program. It won't install anything on your pc and it's actually one of the best. Just go to Avast.com.
If you use activesync for internet sharing you actually don't need it . I don't use it for internet sharing. You just need the drivers. I use wm5torage to put stuff of my memory card.
Hope something I wrote helped.
Uncheck start>settings>connections>usb to pc.
never mind........ I guess my data cable just went retarded.
I bought a new USB>MiniUSB cable today and activesync loads right up.
strange, since the original cable does not look like it is damaged at all, and can still charge the phone.
Oh well - all's well that ends well. lol.

i bit late to the party,me ,but this is a comon problem in certain devices,so far i changed 4 cables with my hermes.
oh well. good to know anyway.
I work as a manager at a retail store, and found a couple of PSP data cables (the exact same cable that HTC phones use, surprisingly) that were in the back room which clearanced to 10 cents.... I bought them out - so I have a TON of backup cables in case I ever need them. LOL
the problem is not the usb cable per say but the usb hub in the device.
the new htc hub since the Hermes have a low threshold for wear, the pins that is, so when your usb cable gets used for awhile it wears out a bit also, this gets to a certain stage the the pins no longer touch each other therefore this problem occurs .
i have noticed that my wife 3 year old wizard has a standard usb plug and we never had any problem with any cables, even using the cables that do not work in the hemes that started showing that problem after 6 months of usage.
yeah - well maybe I'll be lucky and the cables I bought (from the PSP) don't have this wear and tear problem

[Solved] HD2 Connection problem with Win7 & WMDC

Massive problem, HD2 gurus please help me here:
HTC HD2 & WMDC & Win7 x64 = Not working.
I've downloaded WMDC x64 bit from Microsoft's official site, installed the app, plugged my phone in the USB port..... and nothing happens. Win7 x64 does not pick up the phone via any of my USB port (I've tried like 4 different USB ports already).
Here is the weird part, Windows doesn't even pick up the HD2 as an USB device. I doubled checked via Task manager, and nothing has been detected. I have scanned for new hardware via the device manager countless of times.
Nothing shows up, not in device manager, nor control panel. Having WMDC installed doesn't help either, the app simply doesn't recognise HD2 via USB cable. Even with WMDC uninstalled, Windows just can't detect my HD2, but when I plug my Nokia N97 in the same USB port, Win7 picks it up as a mass storage device straight away.
Basically the phone will only charge the battery from the USB port, and nothing else. Win7 x64 doesn't even flinch when I plug the phone in, nothing pops up, WMDC says no device is found. I've tried just about everything, googled a bit and it seems like I'm not the only one that's suffering from this problem.
Here is a list of all the possible solutions that I've tried :

Had the same issue last night when I first tried to sync my HD2. Same issues, ended up being I needed to update the Bios on my motherboard. Ironically it worked after I plugged it in and failed the driver install. Then went to Device Manager and ran update driver for the picked up devices. Works like a champ now. Hope this helps in some way.

Somehow I doubt that I will need to update my motherboard's BIOS, as my PC picks up the Nokia N97 perfectly fine. Having said that, I'm busy dling my mobo's latest BIOS right now.
Will let you know how it works out.
Edit : Nope, just as I thought. Didn't rectify the problem, thanks for your advise though.
Okay, the BIOS update scared me for a second there. I didn't revert back to the default setting after the BIOS update, which made all the USB ports malfunction on my PC. I couldn't use the keyboard nor the mouse, but I solved that problem by clearing the CMOS with a jumper.
Anyway, that's not the problem... The PC still wouldn't reconise the HD2. What I have noticed is as soon as I plug my HD2 in the USB port, HD2 automatically runs the activesync.exe
Having said that, the PC still can't identify the HD2 as an USB device. Absolutely zero response from Windows 7 x64. I've been trying to rectify this problem for over 6 hours already. I have googled dozens of pages, tried just about every single solution (bar the formatting option, which I will leave it as the absolutel final resort).
Please, can someone help me.
Gentlemen, have any of you tried a usb hub?
For the heck of it, have you tried it on a different PC? Have you tried a different cable? I am not sure what cable the N97 uses. I apologize I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, just wanted to find out if it's the handset's micro USB connection problem.

Yes, I have tried it on two different laptops, both have Win7 x86 installed.
I didn't install WMDC, instead I just plugged the HD2 in the USB port, hoping that Windows will automatically download WMDC and install everything on it's own. But alas, no luck with that either. Laptop could not detect the phone via USB cable, nor Bluetooth.
EDIT : OMG, I think I found the solution. Thanks, N1M1TZ. You actually did help me by suggesting the switch of USB cables. Since the Nokia N97 works flawlessly on my PC via USB, and the fact that both the HD2 and N97 uses the microUSB format, I was able to get the HD2 hooked up to the laptop. So it seems like T-Mobile's HD2 USB cable is the culprit. Well, it's in the bin now, I'm gonna use N97's USB cable for both of my phones in the future.
I'm glad you got it working. I had the same issue with my usb cable. Went out and purchased a replacement cable and found this ReTrak USB to micro USB cable. I have used their cables for most of my stuff from patch cord to adapters instead of my cables getting tangled or tied up together. Here's their website for more info http://www.emergeretail.com/Default.aspx

Need to update ROM but usb not recognized!!!

I have a TMO HD2 US version. I am running 32-bit Win7 Ultimate with WMDC 6.1 I can sync the phone with the bluetooth on. I could have the factory TMO usb attached it will charge but not recognize the device. I attempted to update the latest OEM ROM and it just got to the multi color bar screen.I have tried the device on several other pc's with no luck...Windows 7 32bit,XP SP3,no luck. What gives is there a way I can update without the usb cable? Any input would help. Thanks in advance.
Here is a link to my tutorial on how to flash via the SD Card.
Have you tried a different cable? If there is a problem with the phones USB connection, take it back and have it replaced.
whenever you plug in the phone it comes up with 2 options to either connect via active sync or use as mass storage. could this be the problem? hope this helps
Thanks guys!
I am going to try another cable first...i traded my... need I say... iPhone for the HD2 that I have now. I must say its different.I am definitely not happy about the sync issue.MS,TMO both are claiming they have not had that issue. I doubt that TMo will repair or replace a second hand phone purchase. :-(
try restarting your computer and phone, I occasionally have this problem as well, that seems to fix it

[SOLVED] HELP! Windows can't recognize the phone anymore

This is a new problem for me.
After successfully sorting out all the troubles of connecting SGS to KIES, and been using it happily for almost a month, now I'm facing another trouble which is quite big this time.
Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 (64-bit) are now can't recognize the phone when connected through the USB. Got a message says the USB Device/Hardware Is Not Recognized.
I'm using the SGS original cable. The cable was working perfectly and now suddenly it doesn't work in data mode but still able to recharge the phone battery.
Am I having a cable problem? Or worst, the USB connector (on the phone) problem? I tried to clean the USB connector on the phone but still can't connect the phone to my computers.
Does anybody here having the same problem as well?
I just gave up with my PC, same problem
In then end I set up a VMware XP machine to sync
Else I use my laptop
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
I sometimes have a problem with KIES detecting my phone. What I sometimes have to do is connect the phone with KIES loaded, go to device manager, show hidden devices then uninstall the phone (sometimes has error on device, sometimes not) then disconnect then reconnect phone.
Such a faff but using KIES to check for firmware update lol
This may not help ya but worth a thought, Im on Win7 64
I did not have any problem connecting the phone to KIES, I was able to upgrade the firmware from JF4 to JG4, and been a happy SGS owner for a month now.
But yesterday I suddenly can't connect the phone to any computers. My laptop (Win Vista 32-bit) said that a USB device connected is not recognized. I reinstall Kies in my laptop and same thing happen. Then I switch to my PC (Win7 64-bit), USB device not recognized also appear. Reinstall Kies, still no luck.
What I just realized is that there is NO USB Indicator in the SGS notification bar!
Does that mean that the USB connector on the phone going bad?
I still able to recharge the battery but the USB icon dont show up.
I am now seriously considering the quality of Samsung Galaxy S! Way too much problems for average owner, and even for savvy owners this is just over the top!
What should I do now?
Find another computer or install VMWear and see once and for all if its your phone at fault. Also worst case do a factory reset. If no go then you might have a hardware problem. You could always try Mass Storage mode and see if you can mount the phone as external drive. Its not really the phones fault but I would say its KIES, its just a piece of ****. I have never been able to connect to it using 3 computers and I would say I know what i'm doing since I work in i.t. Also did you replace your Launcher recently? As KIES needs TouchWhiz as default launcher to work
I just tried to connect SGS to another laptop (Win XP 32-bit SP3, no KIES though). Same thing, the USB device is not recognized baloon show up and no USB indicator in the SGS status bar.
I'm going to Samsung Service Center, after calling them, they suggest me to bring the phone to the nearest Samsung Center. They said that this is not the first time and also said that the problem might be the connector or the cable.
have you read this ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8107646&postcount=50
Seems kies has a bug where it can't work with files with 16chrs or more.. Told ya KIES is a piece of ****
Yes, But did you try the Mass storage mode
Settings/About/USB
I always just use Mass Storage mode to xfer files. KIES is crap.
As I said previously, my SGS has no problem at all connecting to Kies. USB Mass storage is working perfectly as well.
The problem I'm having now is the hardware (the cable or the interface) I guess, since I still can recharge the phone using the charger or the USB cable.
ps. I'm using Kies from Australia, the 1.5.1.10083.
Have you looked at the pins on the phone? are they screwed? Can you somehow find or burrow another Mini-Usb cable to test ? I have heaps as some of my external hdd's use mini-usb but you might have to buy a new cable.

Thanks for the help guys!
It's purely hardware problem. Yesterday I brought it to local Samsung Service Center, and because they said this is not the first timer, the technician quickly open the device and gosh... dust and some fungus were collected near the microUSB port! I admit I never close the USB port, just left it open after use, my bad!
After some cleaning and testing, the microUSB is working again.
Now I'm a happy SGS user again!
but that doesn't explain how it works on one Windows (Win7) but not on another Windows (WinXP)

USB Problems Since Upgrade to 2.2.1

Since upgrading the Galaxy S to 2.2.1 which I absolutely love - must faster than anything previous, sleek, really well done, I've just noticed for the first time that my USB doesn't seem to work.
The computer sometimes sees it but just says the device is malfunctioning, the phone sometimes sees the PC and gives a menu for "ask on connection", but Windows just does not know what this device is at all.
Suspect I may have to reinstall the drivers fully in Windows, remove it completely and try again, if it actually showed up as an unknown device in Device Manager.
I do need to try another PC and cable just in case, but this is what Im having at the moment in Windows:

Now i am looking to install untouched rom in order to give it to service but when i am trying to flash from recovery i get an error . Any suggestions?
This may sound dumb, but it could be the USB port acting up (loose connection). Try wriggling the cable around or use a different port.

Right, I've tried all available USB ports, two different computers, two different OS's. The phone just does not register a USB data connection. It only recognises AC charging according to the logs.
I think I have a broken USB port on the phone as if I jam the connector in at an angle on the phone, it sometimes registers the data connection but its far too unreliable.
Development mode don't work, Kies, Mass Storage etc... anything. Nothing works.
Factory reset doesn't make it work.
I can't even flash a new ROM as the phone is not detected in download mode.
I've got the phone booked in at a Samsung Service Centre now. I've seen a few webpages referencing corrosion. I tell you what though, this phone has been protected way way more than my old N97. I've had so many phones and not one has suffered from "corrosion". So let them just try and say it's my fault. Im ready for em.

Definitely trying that first - thank you to all the people that have been doing the investigation.
It sounds to me like Samsung have got a bad batch of USB connectors that should be replaced under a factory recall.
I don't use mine in a shower, or sauna, or anything like that, I don't even use it in the rain.
The closest it gets to any humidity is being in my shirt pocket from time to time.
Im going to get some meths or something like that and some thin paper and see what I can do with that. Im just off to Homebase!
there are similar problems on the galaxy 3 series where usb suddenly stops working. the following solutions seem to work there:
1. dial *#7284# to open "PhoneUtil"
2. in USB section, switch to modem, and then switch back to PDA
if that doesn't work: reboot into recovery and select "wipe cache partition"
*hth*
I've tried both of those before I start splashing the methylated spirit around. Still no joy.
Wipe Cache don't work, as well as wipe data/format sd/restore factory defaults etc.
I think I've got a 100% hardware fault.
@OP,
I am terribly sorry about your case. Looks like you need to make that trip to the service centre.
At least you have tried out every possible means known.

Also tried the meths. No good. :-(
The USB just started working yesterday. Still a bit intermittent, but when it gets a connection, it maintains a connection.
I've just ordered some isopropyl and a gold plated USB connector to be on the safe side
Hi everyone,
To sdjean: maybe you could read the post I sent a few minutes ago:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12593413#post12593413
It might explain why your usb data connection does not always work ...
Regards.
I have a Samsung GT-I9000B and I cant use it using USB.
I have 2 usb cables, I am able to find my friends phones.
Now I cant change rom cause odin cant find it too.
Alog cat shows:
E/MTPRx ( 4020 ) Battery charging. plugType = 1
E/MTPRx ( 4020 ) Not of USB charging. DOnt launch MTP APP
Any suggestion?
I'm not an Expert but 2 hints from me:
1. If you have'nt tried yet: Install usb-drivers on pc new and then connect your phone and wait until drivers are installed to your phone.
One times this way worked on my i9000.
2. Look for a zipped rom on xda which you can directly download and install from sd-card.
Sorry, I know my English is bad.
