Hey Guys,
First post, so I apologize if I'm posting this question in the wrong area.. I'm not familiar with forum protocol and such, but this forum was recommended to me by a friend. I'm having serious issues connecting my HD2 with my PC (running Windows 7). I plug it in and it just shows up as would my external hard-drive would and doesn't sync at all. I tried browsing around on here.. But I was having problems finding a thread that related specifically to my problem. If anyone could lend a hand.. It would be much appreciated..
Thanks
Seems you are new to HTC & windows mobile.
Check under SETTINGS>ALL SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS>USB TO PC
Select ACTIVE SYNC instead of DISK DRIVE
if you can't get it to work soft reset your phone should do the trick
Anybody else noticing Syncing (ActiveSync) disconnecting for no reason after being happily connected for some time?
It's not a failure to connect. It generally happens after a few hours of my connecting my Leo to my PC. Didn't used to happen with my Ameo before...
It re-connects fine if I disconnect the cable and re-connect, but it is a bit annoying at the moment.
At the moment, I'm just looking to see if it's just a problem with my setup or whether other people are experiencing the same issue.
I posted this on another query on page 1 :
Frankly speaking, sync with either Vista/Window 7 SUCKs - is terribly slow and "hang" issues often. I have given up using it - on Windows the best is still using Activesync 4.5 on Windows XP.
I only sync on Windows once few months just to have my outlook.pst file updated. This is still the best and stable solution - use Win XP
For daily syncing, nothing beats doing it on my Macbook using Missing sync. On a scale of 10, I rate sync my HD2 on my Mac a score of 10 while on Windows XP : 5 and on Vista/Windows 7 : 2
Actually Microsoft should be ashamed that till now their sync solutions between Window O/S and their own Windows PDA is not well developed.
I also owe a Nokia E71 symbian ( syncing with Outlook ) - compared to the WM pda - the Nokia syncs accurately 100% of the time and it is at least 10 times faster than the WM pda
I also noted another problem syncing my HD2 with Windows XP/or Win 7 : All the favourites contacts which I assigned a photo from a file inside my phone CANNOT be sync over. If the photo is assigned to it thro outlook or my Macbook Addressbook - it can be sync over .

My experienc is exact opposite.
The HD2 is super-fast on my Win7-64 Pro machine. Stable. Reliable. Works every time. And much much faster than the HD or Diamond2. Methinks you have some other issue causing probs. Funny drivers perhaps (not from MS - they work well for sure, but from some add-in)?

Same in my case. It just takes less than a minute to sync around 400 contacts & appointments in Vista. For the same it took a few minutes with HD.

Hi all. Heard there's a newer version of ActiveSync on another thread. namely Activesync 4.1. Can anyone give any feedback confirming this (although I think it's still in Beta stage). If so, isn't it worth a try given the problems encountered on the Universal using just Activesync 4.0.
Someone must know!
Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=28535
Well I have it installed and I don't see anything different. Probably bug fixes. Won't harm to upgrade.
i have 4.1 running, dont know if its connected to the activesync on universal always restarting but i can only sync with pc if i have the universal powered off, then when plugging it in i see the orange power led kick in, 10secs ish later active sync will start,
if i plug in when switched on i get a error bubble on pc saying i have a malfunctioning device, power off and plug back in, wait a bit, i have a working syncing device. wierd!!!!
i only got usb1 on this lappy and my other has 2.0 had same problem, so i dont think its a usb problem
no bugs on my side
i installed 4.1, and it works like a charm on both pda2k and universal

It took a while to work out, but here it is: Skype works fine as long Activesync is not on. In the old machines, AS would kick in and appear in the memory only after you sync'd. Here it comes up automatically, whether you sync or not. In fact, you should see Active sync running in the background virtually always.
Clicking on the memory you'll see its always on, you press stop, and Skype works for 5-10 minutes, until AS turns tiself back on.
Any fixes for this in the registry?

Great stuff Nabil! Now, can someone please check if there are still issues with ActiveSync causing problems with Skype? I would do it, but I don't have my Universal yet! Waiting on the MDA Pro or Exec.
I'm not entirely happy that Activesync is workig the way it was intended & as I was unable to get this confirmed from several forum members, I ventured out of Xda developers.com to seek confirmation of my doubts.
I ended up reading a review of the new Dell Axim X51v Pocket PC, which as you may or may not know, uses WM 5.0 (but less the phone side of things). Not exactly to my surprise, i found that even in non-phone PPC devices, Active sync is a bit of a cause for concern!
Read here: Review of Dell Axim x51v PPC (WM 5.0)
Windows Mobile 5: Not All is Golden
I won't delve too much into Windows Mobile 5 in this review, since I'm focusing on the X51v itself, but I found Windows Mobile 5 very painful in two ways when I was setting up and using the X51v. First, after a hard reset I connected the X51v to my PC and set up a new partnership. ActiveSync 4.0 has a different partnership wizard if you have a Windows Mobile 5 device, and it's quite intuitive. I entered my hosted Exchange account information, then watched as basically nothing happened. The X51v synchronized with my desktop PC, but coughed up an 0x85020006 error when the device tried to sync with the Exchange server. ActiveSync 4.0 removes the option for Internet passthrough - I assumed that meant it was automatic, but after fighting with Connection Manager on the X51v for 15 minutes I gave up and disconnected. I turned on WiFi, and the X51v saw my access point - I entered my WEP key, started ActiveSync, and clicked sync. It worked! Within a few minutes I had all my data on the X51v - but why wouldn't the synchronization work in the cradle? I have no idea, but it's a serious problem.
Later, I wanted to see if a particular ActiveSync bug had been fixed: I've always had the problem where, after a backup and restore, the Pocket PC has been unable to synchronize against the Exchange server again. Only a hard reset would allow the Pocket PC to sync again. On the X51v, I did a backup using the included application, then hard reset and a restore. I restore the device, then after a soft reset I noticed the date was wrong. No matter, I fixed it and started a sync session. Much to my delight, the sync actually started, which is sometime that wouldn't have happened under Windows Mobile 2003SE.
My delight turned to disbelief, then anger as I saw what ActiveSync was doing: it duplicated 900 contacts, 50 emails, and 6 months worth of appointments! No warning, no "Replace, Remove, or Combine" dialogue box, simply a duplication. It will take me hours to fix this manually, unless I can find a tool to remove duplicates. I have memories of such a tool, but at this point I haven't had time to track one down. Any suggestions for one that will work with Outlook 2003 and an Exchange server? I'm unsure as to whether this is a problem with Dell's backup application, or with ActiveSync. The bottom line is that in this instance Exchange ActiveSync remains broken after a restore - and I'd rather have it break completely then duplicate all my data, so from my point of view it's actually gotten worse. I didn't think that was even possible!
Suffice it to say that while Windows Mobile 5 brings with it several key advantages - persistent storage is amazingly helpful - my experience with it so far has been mixed (WMP 10 Mobile retains its horrible library functions), and I have no shortage of feedback for Microsoft at the MVP Summit coming up in a few weeks. Windows Mobile 5 feels like one step forward and two sideways.
End of this part of the review. Full Review here: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,43092&start=2
What do you guys think? I think quite a few problems Universal owners are experiencing will dissapear once MS fix their ActivShite application!
I have had 3 XDA Execs and two XDA Mini S devices.
I have connected them to a Toshiba laptop running the latest firmware and Windows XP SP2.
I have connected them to a Dell desktop running the latest firmware and Windows 2000 SP4.
In every case, I experienced the following issue - Activesync is unreliable. It will sometimes connect and do a full sync, but more often will fail part way through connecting.
Usually, it will fail to notice that the device has connected at all.
A reboot will usually make the Activesync start to work, but usually the connection is broken before the sync can complete.
I have tried the following:
Disable Windows firewall (no change)
Ensure no other personal firewalls are present (there weren't).
Use ActiveSync 4.1 and 4.0 (no change).
It is now at the point where my current Mini S can't even stay connected long enough to install Microsoft Reader.
3 colleagues with Dell laptops and Minis / Exec devices have also experienced the exact same issue.
Am I really the only one to have expeienced this chronic unreliability issue?
MTU
There are some partially obscure references to the MTU size on the network interface that is created for the Windows Mobile device. Seemingly the default is a whopping 8000 but problems occur with anything over 5000 in practice.
I used DrTCP to identify and set my interfaces to 5000 and this improved stability somewhat but it is still a bit touch and go. Have been too busy to play with winding it down lower but I rather think this would help. I would certainly recommend that you give this a try.
Hope this helps!
Thanks, I'll give that a go. 8000? Usually a TCP/IP MTU is more like 1500... [FX: shakes head]
Usually a TCP/IP MTU is 1492
Hi. I've had problems also with activesync with my XDAII (running WM2005c) and my laptop. I've discovered the problems with synching comes when you're using Outlook 2003 and they usually go away when you use Outlook 2002 or earlier.
Hope that helps.
I am using Dopod838 TC version and Outlook2000 SR-1.
I also experienced some Activesync issue when reconnect to PC after the 1st sync-up(1st sync-up from reset always work). At reconnect and sync, my device go really really really slow, I have to do a reset to fix and sync again.
Upgrade to Activesync 4.1 and take care of the port does not help my case as I can sync once without any issues.
Recently i have installed an application call "Card Expert II" which allows me to switch between USB / Activesync mode. I notes CEII fail to switch to USB mode after disconnect from PC, but after sometimes it do. Then I realize probably something at the background of my PPC is still running which cause this issue.
I try to figure out what in between could help release the sync and at last I figure out if I check the SMS/Email on my today screen and close it again.... Card Expert can switch between USB/Sync mode again. I repeat the same trick and now it can sync without issue ....... Now I am 100% confidence my device will sync again after disconnect from PC.
Now whenever before I connect to PC, I would just click and close the SMS/Email on today screen... It's a bit annoying but this save me from reseting my device each time i try to re-sync up my device. Hope this help.
I have had the same problem with sync., the solution for me is to reboot my PC. So the problem must be there, and I have no clue how to solve it...
My solution is to sync once, then do every other sync via Bluetooth, avoiding the dodgy IP over USB implementation entirely.
Maybe ActiveSync 4.2 will fix it...
Just a quick note for all of us having periodic problems with as4.2 and as4.5b2.
I just installed Vista x64 RTM and office 2007 on my main machine. So far, I can say that the WMDC seems to be much more stable than AS4.2 and AS4.5b2. I haven't had a problem in connecting my 838pro to the WMDC yet in a week.
Further, my 838pro used to have evidence of a memory leak in AS4.5b2 and AS4.2 (program memory on the device steady declines when connected to AS4.5b2 and AS4.2, sometimes droping from 25M free to 12M Free in 6hrs connection). However, with the WMDC, my 838pro has connected to the WMDC for over 6 hours and the program memory remains stable at around 22M (before connection was around 24M).....
So guys, seems there is some thing to look out for next year to solve SOME of our AS problems......
PS. In connecting to WMDC, I didn't hard reset my device nor delete my existing partner.

Same here...i am running Vista for a while now and recently changed to RTM.
Was a breeze setting up sync and looks nice too.
2 days ago i lost my sync and couldnt set it up again. WMDC wouldnt recognize my Hermes at all. I guess it happened after uninstalling the Mobile Powertoys and the Connect Emulator AS. Took me a bit to fix. Now again, runs like a charm.

Hi,
Has anyone else noticed that the new activesync (wether it is connected or not) eats up 50% processor time???
Weirder still... it will only connect and sync to it one time... after that it won't recognize the machine anymore and you have to reboot.
I don't have this problem.
Active Sync is installed in the computer. I don't think it will affect the ROM on your device, or were you reffering to your computer?. It is just a medium of communication to your computer.

I dont think he meant ROM! After all such communication tool would only function (utilizes CPU) when required, otherwise remains idle! Check your taskmgr…
when syncing mine uses 2%
Hi, yes I meant 50% of processor time of my XP machine.
This is when it is connected and when it is not connected (as seen with taskmanager). obviously something is very wrong. Let's hope the final will be better

Hi,
There's a beta 2 now!

btw. I don't Sync My Documents folder, or Email, the only things I Sync are Favoriets, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes.
Saves important Memory!

Got the same problem with the final version. First connection is ok after disconnecting activesync keeps running (90-99% processor time). Have to reboot the computer to stop it. After reboot it works ok till I connect my exec again and get the same problem.
Used final and beta versions all with the same problem, so no more wm6 for me at the moment. Installed 4.2 again with no problems.
Suggestions anyone
same problems as dutchrhino
I have the same problems as dutchrhino, but it eats nearly 100% CPU usage!!! it's the rapimgr.exe
after that my pc crashes. i reinstalled it twice, but with result of having the same problems...
trying now beta 2 if it is better....
Facing odd problem with Active sync. Works perfectly with my home PC, but very inconsistant with my office PC. Gets disconnected very often and does not allow bluetooth sync even when connected. I have AS 4.5 both at home and office.

I just got a new laptop running Vista and I am just having tremendous issue trying to sync my Sprint Mogul (HTC Titan) to Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC --> ActiveSync replacement in Vista) and Outlook 2007.
Basically, when I connect my Mogul via USB (NO Bluetooth), the device shows that it is connected for syncing to the laptop. But WMDC shows "connecting..." all the time and just not syncing. The only way to do this is to reboot the laptop.
The same phone sync just find to a Windows XP machine. I have tried the following but to NO AVAIL:
- Disable "Enhanced network USB function" in the device (Start -> Settings -> Connection -> USB to PC
- Remove all background services in the laptop, like Anti Virus, Vista Sidebar, Spy Sweeper.
BTW, my Mogul is running WM6, no custom ROM or anything.
Does anyone have the same issue and can provide me with the solution? It seems Vista and WMDC just breaks everything.
what does sync center say?? I'd try going into WMDC and unchecking all the sync content and seeing if it will connect...chances are theres something that it's trying to sync and it won't....I've also ran into a problem recently where outlook must be open for it to sync properly...you can try that.
There are 2 WMDC applications:
WMDC (Start -> Programs): just say connecting
Sync Center (on Taskbar): when I double click, under "View Sync Partnership", it just say "Disconnected"
I always run Outlook 2007 before Sync, so I suspect something else in Vista causing it.
I have tried a fresh Vista install, and it sometimes work, sometimes doesn't.
What I found out is like this:
1) Start Vista and Outlook
2) Connect device to WMDC - WORK
3) Disconnect, but Outlook remain
4) Reconnect - DOESN'T WORK

I have Vista and Outlook 2007 and never had a problem with syncing. I just tried the 4 steps you outlined and it worked when I first connected my Mogul and also when I reconnected the Mogul. What version of WMDC are you running? I have 6.1.6965.
I usually don't run Outlook before doing a sync. I've never had a problem with this either way.
2 Things
I know you said that it shows something about being connected, but have you gone to My Computer and tried to access your device? This will help determine if its just not being recognized by the system properly, or if the sync software is hosed.
Additionally, try searching here or on ppcgeeks.com for the "update vista drivers". I didn't need them - but apparently some folks did. Depending on how long you've had Vista, and/or whether or not you've done M$ Windows updates, I'm thinking your driver could be hosed.
I too have Vista - and I can sync just fine as well as transfer files back & forth through My Computer. I also sync the same device up with an additional computer (how sweet is that? I wish iTunes would freakin' work like that one of these days!) that's on XP.
Would love to help more if need be. I'll be around Saturday if you want to PM and try going over your settings vs mine or something.
Sometimes I have to connect my mogul up to 6 times before it connects properly to my Vista laptop. I now always open device manager before connecting the mogul. It doesn't connect properly until the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter driver installs correctly under Network Adapters AND the pocketpc driver installs correctly under portable devices. And it is very wierd because sometimes it works on the first try, and other times like I said b4 it can take up to 6 tries before it works right. I have looked up the error codes that it generates in the Event logs and there are a lot of people who are having the exact same issue, so I chalk it up to a Vista problem and hopefully it will get better after SP1 is released.

How did you get this MS Windows Mobile Remote Adapter and Driver? Windows Update or manual download link?
I don't know how to set my ppc-6800 (same as Mogul) to sync my contacts and e-mails with outlook 2007. When i connect it to my PC, it appears in my computer and i can browse in and transfer files in both ways. But still no contacts or e-mail sync...i would like to get help.

I agree with the problem being a driver issue, mine searches for updates every week. I've had a vista machine since october last year and havent had any problems at all with syncing(usb or BT) or changing roms. As a suggestion when a first got my 6800 in July and switched to the 2.17 rom i had to upgrade to a newer version of WMDC, check your version and the most up to date one on HTC's website. Hope that helps.
Hi all,
I am bringing this thread back because now I have another issue with Mogul syncing to Vista with Outlook 2007. This is actually for my friend but the issue is simply puzzling and I hope anyone have insight on this.
My friend have another laptop and a Mogul and when he connect the device to the laptop via USB, Vista Mobility Device Center (MDC) only recognize it as a MEDIA PLAYER, not as a PDA.
I tried the following:
- Disable/Enable USB Advanced Network functionality (System -> Settings -> Connections)
- Hard reset the Mogul
- Connect the devices and run Windows Update (to check if there is a driver issue)
When I connect that same Mogul to a Windows XP, it sync just fine.
What do you guys think?
Guys,
Just a quick update on the issue whereby I cannot sync the Mogul to Vista: the driver updates did the trick! After installing the driver update, syncing works just fine! I wonder why M$ didn't include this update under Windows Update.
Thanks for the help all!

Please, where did you get the driver updates. Was it a driver on the phone, or for vista.
I am having similar probs, except it appears to sync, but deletes all contacts (inclunding sim!) from my touch dual.
It's shown in the thread above. The driver is available in PPCGeeks. I forgot which thread there, though.

I'm sorry -- was not aware of that. I have automatic updates set up so this question of driver update/renewal never came up for me.
Does this update work for anyone?
My Mogul is hanging on my laptops side...it say "Connecting to Unidentified Device".
And then it just stays there for ever....

The only way I could get around it is to disconnect my device, remove the device from WMDC - and - remove the PC connection in ActiveSync on the device and start ALL over again.
Also, I found that when you have a lot of data (like I do) to start syncing only piecemeal, i.e. do the first sync with the defaul settings first, then add folders, then add emails, etc.
IMHO - WMDC is so inadequate.
Oh well, tried all of these and still no joy

Disable the Windows Mobile DNS cache. This requires a registry
modification. Windows Mobile does not include a registry editor, but
free third-party editors are available (such as one from www.phm.lu).
Change the value of:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\
DnsCacheEnable to 0
If DnsCacheEnable does not exist, create it as a DWORD value.
A soft reset is necessary for the change to take effect.
